This rabbit, however, was pierced through the midsection by a miniature spear --a dart?-- of light. The --let's just call it a senbon-- protruded from the animal's hide and the piercing nature of the attack caused the creature to just drop where it stood, without a jerk or even a hop. "Yes! That's what I'm talking about!" Hemlocke punched the air in celebration as the rabbit exploded. She flipped the loaned talisman up into the air and caught it in her left hand, holding it out to draw in the motes of light as she looked down into the journal that she had open in her right hand to follow her progress in the quest. She was getting closer, that's for sure.

Hemlocke was busy looking into the journal in her hand. She waited for the feeling of the motes of light being absorbed by her talisman, and found herself wanting. Oh... The thought trailed off. She didn't want to look up from the journal. There were only two possibilities: that the rabbit hadn't released any motes of light... Or that she was in for a repeat of that super rabbit from earlier... And... She closed her eyes and closed the journal with a snap. She began focusing energy into the hand holding her talisman, getting ready to bolt in the defensive sense. Finally, she looked away from the closed book and saw something reforming out of the exploded red remains of the rabbit that she'd slain. The tail end of the thought that had begun earlier finally snaked its way through her mind. s**t.

She had no time to process the scene before her. Blasting as much energy into her hands as was possible, Hemlocke screamed and formed a circle of energy between herself and the creature that was assaulting her. She had no chance of avoiding it: she could only hope to keep it at bay until she died horribly.

Anna-Mia was strolling through the forest again, looking at the heart she had gotten from that last rabbit. It was a good bunny, but not exactly what she needed. and then she saw a piercing golden light lance through the trees. She got closer and saw a bunny with the purest of gold fur. It had swirling tufts of it that rose like vestigial wings off of its forelegs, and light emanated through microfractures on the Bunny's body. Its eyes and mouth emanated red light as it attacked someone...it was Hemlocke! "Look out Hemlocke!" She cried out as she threw a piece of bait at the gleaming creature. it was then that she saw the only piece of the rabbit that wasn't Golden. A dull, faded red stripe on its left side from neck to tail. it emanated faint red light in shafts where the stripe was, but not like a fresh wound she imagined...a scar? What had this bunny been through that it had gotten a scar that long? If someone had attacked it and let it go, what kind of monster would hurt a bunny and just leave it to suffer? She had to tame this bunny. not just because she needed to, but because she wanted to do this bunny the justice it deserved.

Hemlocke took a vicious attack from what appeared to be a miniature sun. The flimsy transparent shield that she had erected shattered with a crack and she was struck in the abdomen by a gargantuan, golden rabbit. She was beginning to hate rabbits. The girl was sent backwards by the blow, hitting her back on the ground and rolling over her head to push her toes back into the earth, her off-hand's fingers clawing at the moss and roots that obscured the Gloomwood's soil as she tried to get enough traction to utilize the light that she was already focusing into her main hand for another block. It was as her eyes stopped spinning in their sockets that she realized that that small voice in the woods was back. It was a few moments before she realized that she was watching a replay of the events that she had experienced earlier, and that someone had attacked the rabbit to defend the helpless shyft. Then she realized that it was the same someone.

Hemlocke clutched her stomach with her off-hand, still crouched low from her tumble. "Anna-Mia... We really have to stop meeting like this."

The candy bait flew like a rabbit seeking missile as it thudded into the beast. The light emanating from it changed to a peaceful blue as it laid down and its crumbled into shards that scattered across the ground. Anna-Mia smiled for a brief instant of joy and self-assertion before snapping back to reality and rushing over to Hemlocke and kneeling by her side fretful and concerned. "Don't worry about that right now! Are you okay? Do you need anything? Something to heal, of course! You need a potion!" She pat herself down frantically before coming to a bothersome realization: "WHY DON'T I HAVE ANYTHING TO HEAL?! What good is all this bait if I have nothing to heal? I'm so sorry I didn't get it before it got you! I'll be better in the future!" part of her knew she was probably overreacting. That part of her was being smothered by the host of abandonment issues she would have to deal with later in life. Her blood family had...well her animal family was stolen, Her chosen brother couldn't directly interact with her, and now the first person she was really starting to hit it off with had gotten hit HARD. This little girl was having a bit of a year.

Hemlocke took a breath and felt the pain fade away as her health bar filled back to the top, and she realized that she, herself, had no healing items either. "I'm alright. It's funny that you mention it: I don't have any healing items either." She laughed softly and pushed herself up off of her knee. Her eyes were met with a cloud of light. Absolutely massive. Hemlocke began to laugh gleefully and fetched her talisman. The particles began swirling, dancing merrily through the air as they flew toward their future home inside the jewelry in Hemlocke's hand. Hemlocke was worried that the capacity of the container might be exceeded, and that she was going to lose a hand, but --surprisingly-- all of the motes fit, and Hemlocke looked down into the crystal to see a miniature solar system forming inside the void within. "Oh this is going to be good."

Hemlocke's purple eyes lit up and she grinned. "Thank you so much, Anna-Mia. You have no idea how much you've helped me. Even more than just saving my life."

Anna-Mia took a few deep breaths as she smiled softly. "Well, I'm glad I could help. You've actually helped me too." The Golden bunny reformed in front of her, and then leapt onto her lap as she sat with her legs folded behind her. She pet the bunny softly on the head and down its left side, feeling just how old the wound was. "I needed a bunny just like this to start part one of my plan to be able to live here. Part two involves Getting a Deer that is like this too. I had tamed a few bunnies before, but none of them were standing back up for me." She looked up at Hemlocke, her sapphire eyes twinkling and genuine "Thank you for finding this"

Hemlocke made a few adjustments to her models, and, when she was done, looked down at the journal that she was so fond of. The new talisman that she'd obtained from the golden rabbit was set into the front cover. She smiled softly as she touched the the ametrine locket set into the top petal. "Trust me, I didn't have too much of a choice in the matter." Hemlocke grinned. "So you're hunting for a special deer, too? Huh. Well, when were you thinking of going on that adventure? It looks like if I get too far from you, I'm going to die horribly, so I figure it would be easier to just get into those situations while we're together instead of counting on you to be wandering through the area." She looked into her journal to see if she had anything else to be doing. It didn't really seem like it. She had spiders, a boar and a bear to take care of, and special loot to get from some creature or another, but nothing that was immediately demanding her attention.

Anna-Mia smiled and stood with the bunny in her arms. it was delicately sniffing the air around it, remaining calm in the arms of its master. "Well, If you have nowhere else to be, we could stat now if you wanted." She ha placed the bunny in the open hood of her jacket on he back, and the bunny looked ahead of her at Hemlocke, nose still twitching. "At least, if you feel well enough to start."

Hemlocke nodded, looking at the peaceful Pikachu that had been made of the horrible monster that she'd almost been savagely murdered by. "I'm going to need to run to the encampment to grab some supplies, and then I'll be ready to go. I'll be right back!" The girl might as well have vanished, as quickly as she darted toward the fulfillment of her quests. She was back in no more than ten minutes, and raring to go, her journal's talisman decorated with a red stone and a brilliant blue, multi-faceted crystal. "There we go. All set, if you're ready." She smiled and patted the journal on her belt softly, her middle finger idly tracing the outline of the ametrine crystal on its face. "I'm afraid I haven't actually seen any deer around here. You'll have to lead the way, I think. I fear that if I lead, we're likely to stumble across the jabberwock."

She was less than half-certain that that scenario was at least half-joke. As she followed Anna-Mia, she kept her eyes open. When they finally stumbled across a deer, she did the only thing that she could: She closed her eyes, reaching deep down inside her being and began stoking the light that was there, drawing it to the surface. Her left hand was touching the ametrine locket on her talisman, and the red stone began to softly shimmer as infinitesimal red specks of glitter began to appear in the air around her.

Anna-mia nodded to Hemlocke, and waited for her return. "You know, Jabberwocks get a bad rap. They're actually pretty cute." She saw her traveling companion doing something with her talisman and scanned the treeline. That's when she saw a gorgeous Buck. it was what she needed. if she was going to make this work, she would need a Deer. She cocked back a piece of bait, and let it rocket towards the deer as fast as it could possibly go. She didn't have the best track record with Deer, but she had improved much in a short time. She was confident that she could make this work.

Hemlocke didn't have a chance to activate her talisman. The red sparkles in the air were left hovering around her as the deer was tamed in a single strike from Anna-Mia. It dawned on the shyft how unhelpful she was going to be if she couldn't actually cast. It seems that lightcasters needed their time to wind up before they were actually of any use. She hoped that Anna-Mia didn't notice this and kick her to the curb. At the very least, Hemlocke had her companionship to offer, and the minuscule group bonus that was received by being in a party. She would be of some help if they encountered another augmented animal, she was sure, but until then she was so much dead weight.

But she would not compromise. She saw motes of light being emitted by the crumbling remains of the deer, and made the decision to stick with lightcasting, no matter what. She could use the light that she harvested from this session to produce weaker lucent stones, that would be capable of rapid fire activation, allowing her to be of more assistance in smaller, quicker fights. The Lucent Sapphire was a marvelous nuke, but it required time to charge. She would use it when they needed to be of true assistance in a fight that was an actual threat. Just the fact that she may not be ultimately super-handy while hunting fleeing creatures was not going to put her off her chosen path. She would adapt. The magic of magic was that it could adapt to overcome anything. So she would adapt. She would find some way to be of use, and then she would do that. Until that point, she would just have to be of use by preparing to handle clean-up if Anna-Mia's arm didn't find its perfect target.

"Nice shot! I'm sorry I wasn't much help there: it takes me a second to get my powers warmed up. But it doesn't appear that you needed much help anyway, does it?" She laughed, allowing Anna-Mia to take the lead once more.

Hemlocke had started to charge again, but hadn't managed to get her attack quite ready before Anna-Mia had finished the fight. Man, she was going to have to get quicker on the draw. The second deer had already begun to crumble away before Hemlocke was ready to fire. No matter. They were both getting what they wanted. Hemlocke was getting access to blue motes of light, and Anna-Mia was getting the hearts that she needed to breed her army of monsters. If they were all going to be golden creatures, she felt that that description might be rather apt.

The glittering light that had accumulated in her vicinity began to twinkle out of existence, and Hemlocke drew the blue motes of light from their latest conquest to her, guiding them into the talisman on her journal. This wasn't a terrible arrangement. She was getting practice charging her attacks, so she wasn't wasting any time, and she'd be able to help if Anna-Mia actually happened to miss a shot, though the girl's bait seemed to find its mark with the same impossible precision that Cthaer's knife did. It seemed that, just like back then, Hemlocke would have to find new and creative ways to be useful.

"What? Oh, no. Think of me like a back-up plan. If I can't figure out how to get quicker on the draw, then I'll just be able to help in case one of them starts to get away. I'm just artillery."

The Young Tamer nodded as the Deer before her crumbled away. Anna-Mia sighed fairly heavily. "They never stand up for me. I'm beginning to wonder if taming these critters can even make them stand back up." That thought made her pause a bit to look at Glimmer. While her trusty bunny companion had pointed out to her another deer on the treeline, Anna-Mia finally processed the circumstance that led to her coming into being and trembled a bit. She shook her head to clear it and threw a piece of bait at the new deer from the hip. She couldn't expect everyone to survive the same way she did, and even she knew that some death was necessary to survive...she still didn't like it, but she knew that fact.
