Why couldn't she move any faster, each step she took she felt they were taking five more. Ascending, so fast without her.

That renewed strength had to last! She made it up as many steps in a row as she could, without pause, without thinking. Finally, she allowed herself to consider the next line in their speech.
Team Retribution travel in the night!
Would they always travel in darkness? They were Silver, for now, and no longer Shadow denizens. The Light was not forbidden to them, now; the light, and in her mind, salvation. Were salvation and retribution not inextricably linked?

His legs were starting to hurt and he felt like he was going to be sick. But Kashi kept moving forward. There was no other choice. Something inside of him made him move. He no longer knew if it was for Molan or for himself. But he kept moving.

Why was Merope never around for his part!?
Well, this time there were several reasons. Namely she hadn't seen the Hermit since they agreed to let him be alone to clean, or whatever he did with halberds in his pants; after that, there had been the gathering of miasma, the destruction of their kingdom, the battle for their lives.
And now this. She couldn't really blame him for that. Well, not for long anyway. She could still try...! With a heave of her shoulders in a silent sigh, she said it mentally for him. Again.
The Voice, on the 200th step, began to plead. It offered her Kingship. Her King had been attacked by their own team; nothing good could come of this Voice, and its offers. Besides, she'd been a "pawn" for so long, why not play in her own game? A piece to no one.

A few steps and he froze, shaking his head suddenly. NO. IT. That thing. It was wrong. He was right.
Aww... you really want to keep crying? You won't hurt now. He looked at the seemingly concerned face until an arrogant smile replaced the mockery. And yet he didn't realize, he was the one who had taken that expression on, staring up suddenly.
He stood there a moment, pondering the odd feeling. He wondered... Since when had he been on that side? Away from the safety of the wall? Since when was the other him over there?
Why did he seem so real? Oh... but don't you know?

He was somehow equal parts disappointed and equal parts amused that Yin had just stumbled to a stop behind him. He shook his head in amusement, chuckling silently with a bow of his head to attempt to hid the face splitting grin that had broken out across his face.
Jack save him if Yin remembered any of this after it was all over.

Kashi paused for only a moment. The voice had promised to rebuild the world around Kashiyoru. Kashi could rebuild it around Molan. He could be Kashi's queen and Kashi could spend all day calling Meng a coward as revenge...
'No.' He wasn't sure why he thought it. Only that he did. His legs carried him further up. A smile on his face, at the thought of Molan in queens robes and crown.
There was a brief moment that she stopped to lean against the wall, panting and catching what breath she could. And the heavy weight she'd felt before was even worse the farther up the stairs she made it.
Just a little further... just a little further... ohgod please let it be not much longer!
Oh and It was back. Making more promises.

No. Listen to the way it sounded! There was nothing but empty promises in the Voice. And why would it want to grant a mere fragment something more grand when it had already taken the illusion away of their kingdoms?

Her sides were in pain, her heart and her head. Her hands gripped the staircase, nearly pulling herself up each new set of stairs. She had to make it up, before he disappeared again. Before it happened like when they were trying to escape for their lives or the Labyrinth.
