Alyx and Rota continued to whale on the boar, and its attacks grew more and more desperate. It was close to perishing, and everyone knew it. They just had to keep on for a little longer. Just a small handful of attacks to go, and they would have no more super-unbelievable-bullshit monsters to deal with in this immediate area. He imagined that there were more of those types of things in their near future, but this one, at least, would be gone, and they could take no small amount of solace in that fact. It just kept repeating in his mind, as his health dropped further and further toward the inevitable blackness that was death: Just a little bit more. Just a little bit more. He was almost completely on autopilot at this point, running on what minuscule amounts of adrenaline were still pumping through his veins to keep himself standing. His health was low, his AP was gone, his Light was completely drained. He was, in a word, empty. But he was not yet useless. He wasn't out of this fight yet, and he intended to prove that now. He readied his sword, charging another double strike, the last one he'd be able to perform until he'd gained some stamina. But he was about to lose the beast's attention, so that would need to be dealt with as well.

That was better, but Rota would need just a bit more stamina to make the final push. he steeled his mettle and pressed on, laying into the beast with all his might. No force out there would stop him from seeing this through to the end. he could still taste the fruits of his labor despite the flavor being washed out by desperation like hot sauce on taste buds. All he needed to do was finish this and the rewards were his. But would he lose his freedom to gain this boon? only time would tell.

Alyx dealt a vicious blow against the boar, and its health dipped even further toward zero. There was a tiny sliver of red left in its container, and it seemed to be somewhere near 5% or so. He questioned the efficacy of building AP and taunting the creature again. No. No, he'd let the beast be free in its last moments. It was already going to die, it might as well have control of its own actions. It was the least that he could do. It had been an honorable opponent, and it deserved the respect of going out on its own terms, as Alyx would himself hope to go.
The Gloomking looked down at his blade and tapped it against his boot idly. "Let's do this, then. It's time to take this home, beastie."

Rota felt his stamina reach acceptable levels. and the jitter was getting worse again. Whatever was going on, he needed to end this now before he ran out of time, or whatever was going on started harming Alyx. He wreathed his blade in the crimson aura once more and made his efforts for a final push against this boar. He was confident that he was close to killing this thing...wait, what was that? over the Boar, there was this bar that wasn't there before. It was mostly black, with a small segment filled with red. There was one of these over Alyx as well, but his was considerably more filled in...were these gauges of how damaged things were? He had always been able to feel this, but here it was in plain sight...as he sank his blade into the boar, the wounds were there, but beyond that they were overlaid by red bands of light...which on a cursory glance had a series of 1's and 0's running through them. He laughed nervously, likely coming out more of as a cackle than it sounded in his soul. What was happening to him? What was this? He had to be insane, that was the only explanation. This sword had driven him crazy. No...he had heard voices in his head before this, and this had never happened. What was going on?

The boar was on its very last legs now. Which is saying something, considering the absolutely ridiculous amount of damage that they'd done to it. This monster was just that: a monster, and it had given them the fight of their lives. Alyx drew his blade back and aimed a thrust through the creature's heart, hoping to get it out of this world before it grew fifty feet tall and trampled the Gloomwood flat. He hoped against hope that the beast wasn't going to stand back up, but there was that small, constantly suicidal part of him, that wanted to see it happen. Imagine conquering that monster! That would be something to see. Good God I have a problem.

Rota had lain bare his intent onto the boar, and watched the bar over it decreasing. it definitely was some sort of life barometer. Rota decided he was done with this insanity. his blade remained flared as he slammed it into his opponent with all the force he could muster in his desperation. He was sick of this beast blocking him from the things that are so rightfully his. he would beat this beast into oblivion, and claim the prize that such a creature held within.

Their attacks had been driven home, and the boar was reduced to an infinitesimal amount of health. Nothing was left to be done. An additional strike would just bring about further suffering. Alyx stepped back and put away his blade, sliding it into the sheath in Aegis of the Usurper, content to let the beast lie. There was no more to this fight, and their opponent was dead. He would do no more to the thing than just to allow it to die. If it attacked him, he would let it strike. He owed it that much. But for possibly the first time in his life, Alyx had slaked his bloodthirst. Now, there was just his lootthirst to worry about. His hand twitched as he imagined opening his loot dialogue.

Rota was physically drained. he had waylaid this boar for what felt like years, and finally it was almost dead. And suddenly it took exception to having a gory-hole in its side. Rota would not allow it to pierce him as other major boars had done in his short (esque) time here. he would NOT allow it. He knew the boar was dead, Alyx had likely pumped it full of so much poison that it was running on borrowed time. That did not mean it could take this out on him. He roared in defiance as his blade maintained its aura and he swung at it's right tusk. No amount of rage that thing had could match the sheer fury that this demon felt. The madder he became, the more his model jittered as the sword screamed death through the air as it went on a collision course with the Boar's face to spin it away.

Alyx watched the boar slump over. He didn't believe it. His aching muscles clenched his battered weapons, and he shook from exhaustion as the red light of death began to spread through the monster. The red light completed its journey, consuming the boar entirely. It seemed to hesitate for a moment before the creature exploded with the force of a megaton bomb. The shards of red light almost seemed like they'd shred Rota and Alyx as they filled the clearing, and the explosion dazzled the Gloomking. Almost made him wish that he wore a helmet. He waited for longer than was absolutely necessary, watching the site of the boar's death for its reconstitution. Finally, he cautiously began to believe that it was over.
Less stepping and more stumbling backward, Alyx pushed the point of Gloomfang into the earth to give him something to lean on. Breathless, he voiced his reluctant hope: "Is it over?"

Rota with a final heave had driven the attack of the boar away, just as a parry god of his stature should be able to do. With a blood curdling roar of anguish the Boar's spinning abdominal core began to crack and decay, crumpling in on itself as the rest of its untainted golden 'flesh' cracked with shafts of light shooting off it. The core crumpled to the size of a fist, shaking madly and emanating light that would make the blind shield their eyes. With a sudden stop, the core burst cracked open skyward, erupting into a massive spiraling vortex beacon of red light which blighted the sky overhead. Rota looked up as he was protecting his vision, and saw that they had been fighting for so long that the moon had risen to banish the imperishable day. However, the night did not last long as the horizon was lit red by the torrent of red shards that blasted into it as if to challenge the stars themselves on wish could shine brighter. it was then that the body still in tact began crumbling away and sent the finger of god outward, threatening to lacerate the two beings that were able to fell this Photonic Titan. Rota grabbed his cloak with his left arm and brought it over his chest to protect Croire as he folded his right arm over it for added shielding to her. it was a good long while before the initial blast had ended, but once it had Twinkling prisms of light were gently dancing back down to the ground they had been ejected from, like little prismatic stars. Rota heard Alyx speak as he looked at his cloak, naught more than a tattered scarf now. He nodded as the Demon Greatsword hungrily attracted the motes of light to it like the historic Muramasa. "It is done." Rota jittered again as he placed his left outer palm in his left eye socket and clutched his head, his fingers flexing in response.

Hemlocke adventured through the Gloomwood, on the hunt for more rabbits. She was still several motes of light short of her goal, and it seemed that the best --if not only-- way to get the things was to battle other creatures. She'd gathered four of them so far, and they'd all been red. Locke wondered if there were other colors aside from red, and was looking hopefully to the future to learn more about exactly what they were and how they functioned. The Lightcaster seemed to have a plan for them, so they couldn't be worthless. She hoped, most of all, that she would get a way to improve her damage capabilities. The ceiling for this art would get a whole lot lower if there wasn't a way to upgrade these fascinating trinkets. Hemlocke shook her head and realized that she was near a rabbit. Her hand touched the talisman, and her finger drew a small wisp of light from the stone there, which seemed to focus her energies. That smokey tendril of light wound its way around her finger before she pointed at the rabbit, and the wisp straightened, shooting like a bullet toward its target.

The needle of light pierced the air, silently flying toward the defenseless rabbit, and struck the animal just behind its shoulder, through the heart. The animal collapsed immediately, without even a shudder, and turned red, exploding into shards before Hemlocke's eyes. She grinned and prepared the talisman to absorb the motes of light liberated from her victim, lifting it from its loop on her belt and holding it out to pull the energy into its stores. She flipped open her journal as she held the talisman out, looking to see if these things had an upper capacity. The general consensus was 'what the hell is a lightcaster?', so she was woefully lacking any input from the boards. Shrugging, she slipped the book back into the pouch on the back of her belt and looked up to observe the progress of the absorption.

She'd gotten a couple from that kill, but she wasn't sure that she had enough yet. Oh, well. She needed to complete this quest before she could attempt to take on a boar, so she had no real choice in the matter. Besides, if these things were the keys to power, then she would need all of them that she could get. She re-read the opening entry of her journal as she continued into the woods, flipping through her current quests while she was at it. A little further, and movement caught the corner of her eye. Carefully closing her journal, the girl traded it to her off-hand, raising her dominant and deciding to try something new. Touching her middle finger to her thumb, she closed her eyes and imagined the energy within her flowing into her fingertips. She opened her eyes and saw an infinitesimal glittering point between her fingers. With a snap, she sent the energy streaking forward like a laser, whistling as it flew.

The magic had struck the rabbit, but not killed it. Panicking, Hemlocke poured another ball of energy into her palm, throwing it like she was skipping a rock across a pond. The animal was outside the range of a normal melee attack, but Hemlocke hoped for lightcasting to have a bit more range. The orb of light spun through the air, chasing the tail of the injured rabbit at a bit of a horizontal arc. Hemlocke watched carefully, willing the bolt to make contact. She really needed these motes of light. She paid close attention to the distance that the magic was traveling, so that she could more accurately judge the distance that she was capable of fighting in. Once she learned her boundaries, she would be more capable of filling those boundaries with her new power.

Cursing her luck, Hemlocke watched the rabbit skitter away into the undergrowth as her magic bolt struck a tree and faded out of existence. Hemlocke frowned. Oh, well. Can't win 'em all. She whipped out her journal and began searching for the effective range of her new powers. Apparently, according to the tutorial, the magic had the effective range of a bow and arrow, allowing for her to attack from a distance well outside the range of a sword's strike. That would come in handy if she ever got a partner to fight behind. She didn't fool herself: she would probably not ever be a tank. But, with the right party, she could provide supporting fire from a safe distance, and could potentially be a potent source of assistance. She closed her journal and began to carefully follow the trail at some distance, looking for a rabbit that hadn't been spooked by the attempt she'd made on the previous one's life. After a few moments, she found one. She steepled her hands and focused light into the space between her palms, pushing her hands forward like she was delivering a kikoho. The bolt flew forward like a tiny arrow, and zipped its way to the unsuspecting rabbit.
