"That's too damn bad!" Alex took a few brisk steps towards Kenth, grabbing his arm. "You wanted me to stay close so you knew I was safe, you said it yourself! Now you're stuck--"

The world narrowed to a point. One minute she was looking at Kenth's face, perfect in his unbelievably icy glare, and the next there was something moving behind him. Her angry gaze moved from the doctor to the thing, and everything drained from her face leaving only fear; her adrenaline kicked in, and everything slowed down. She didn't have time to think or try to save herself, didn't have time to worry about what her actions would cost her. Using the momentum that grabbing Kenth's arm had started, she swung him close and tripped him, knocking him down flat just in time to take the full brunt of something moving at impossible speeds directly in her chest.

Alex rolled with the movement, the thing having hit her already moved beyond her. Her back hit the forest ground hard, but not hard enough to forget there was someone here she had come to keep safe. Wheezing in pain, "Hurry, Herei!," she scrambled to her hands and knees and quickly moved to Kenth. There, she supported herself over him with her hands by his head and her knees by his hips, looking around with her acute stare. Oh, this was bad, this was so beyond bad...that thing had hurt, she knew she wouldn't be able to do much to hold it off. Frightened eyes looked down to the man under her, lips moving numbly, "Kenth, you need to run--"

She was hit again, launched into the air and landing hard on her side, rolling in the leaves until she felt a tree at her back. Alex grimaced as she started to pull herself up, doing a quick check of her body; a rib might be cracked, but it was hard to tell with the pain so fresh. She wearily got to her feet, finally making out the form of her assailant; it was as though the darkness had formed a Self, a being so dark that the light would never penetrate the depths. It was vaguely humanoid, and while she couldn't see a face, she could see it moving...towards the doctor.

The woman bared her teeth and readied herself as well as one could when one knew their body was about to be broken, and launched herself at the moving shadow. She wrapped her arms around the impression of its shoulders, the crook over her elbow curled around where its neck should be, knees digging into the corporeal sides. "I'm HERE," she snarled at the thing, yanking her arms back to stop the shadow from advancing on the prone man. Alex felt like her body was falling right through the thing in her grasp, yet she was still suspended against it, knowing that nothing she could kick or throw at it would hurt it. This thing was not human.

More than that, it did not like her on its back. The thing swung around, the darkness forming upwards to grab the back of her neck. Alex hung on as tightly as she could, feeling her muscles scream in protest against their sudden use after running so hard. The blackness around her neck moved over her shoulder and down her back, grabbing her around the midsection and yanking her off as though she were nothing more than a leaf. In the same careless motion, the thing threw the woman high and hard, not unlike she had thrown the knife at the strange man not that long ago.

Unlike the knife, Alex could not pierce the tree that stopped her flight. Her back hit the solid bark too hard, her head snapping back and hitting the tree with a disgusting smacking sound; her hairclip shattered with the impact, and blood came to her lips too quickly. The world spun and jerked violently, and she knew she was falling from a strange and unsettling height. Her eyes dimmed as the ground came to her at an alarming rate, although she couldn't find it in herself to be scared now.

The breath had been knocked from her body, and she was bleeding; when her body hit the ground, it did not move, her limbs arranged around her still frame like a broken marionette, face veiled by her hair. The world went dark.

-----

They were maybe two-thirds of the way in when the smile slipped, Herei yanking the receiver out of his ear at the loud whine that followed the microphone's destruction. "Hurry," he instructed the others around him, breaking into a run. They couldn't be far now, and for Kenth's sake, he hoped they weren't.

Things just went up-side down.

Kenth did not have the time to react when Alex suddenly yanked him and smashed him onto the ground. All the time he had he used it on muttering a moan in confusion and pain. When the heavy weight of another human being was close upon him and Alex's hard breathing came into his ears, Kenth's brain circuit was completely fried. His logic was gone, his composure no longer existed. All that was left in him was a completely shocked and fearful little human...not any better than any normal teenage boys under his mother's protective arms.

And when Alex was flung away the young doctor unconciously screamed a "No!" from deep down in his lungs. He had the chance to get up just in time to see the woman hitting the tree. His eyes didn't have time to focus on what was attacking Alex. Instead, it was stapled on the woman, being hit and then being thrown. His puples were narrowly focused due to the shock, and his eyes looked almost white, with blue fading back. The man wanted to move, wanted to run, but the legs found no strength in doing so. Kenth was literally shaking all over, his lips half open, and cold sweat tinckled down from his face.

Did Alex just save him from getting killed?

=================================================

The shadow stopped and turned back to the young doctor, who was tramatized by the sudden turn of event. It bent over slowly, and approached Kenth as if a cat was approaching a trapped mouse. Deep growling that sounded somewhat like laughing can be heard from the creature's throat. As the shadow walked closer, Kenth could see a pair of golden glint that seeped out from what he would consider a face. Eyes of a devil...

Come on, move it!

Kenth cursed himself for being so paralyzed in this situation. He held to the ground tightly with his hands, trying to push his body up from the ground. His body was visibly shaking, and that gave the creature something to be delightful for. It made a sharp shriek that pierced across the silent sky. Then the creature charged, like a wild animal with claws pushing onto its prety.

Kenth shut his eyes tightly. Would this be the end? He was so close to the truth...no...he was sure that he had the truth the instant he saw Alex being attacked, but...

An animal like scream, and sounds of scuffling rushed into the young doctor's ears. Kenth snaped his eyes open. The shadow creature flew off from himself like Alex was flung away before. He dazed for a moment, and looked up at the cloaked man who just saved him.

"You---"

The stranger chuckled. "You surely can talk, but fighting is none of your strengths, isn't it?"

Kenth stared at the man with his mouth open. How did he get here? Was he around before? And more importantly, why was this man so strong?

"Who are you? How---"

"You humans are truly weak creatures." The man didn't answer Kenth's question. Instead, he walked over to the creature, who appeared to have fainted, and checked up on it. He seemed to whisper something to the creature, who stirred slightly. After making sure that the creature was okay, the man stood up and walked over to Alex. There, he gave a condescending snort, and picked up the unconcious woman like a sack of dirt and flung her onto his shoulder.

"What are you doing?" Alerted by the stranger's action, Kenth demanded, finally finding enough strengh to get up.

"I have no more use of you." The man replied coldly. "But I should thank you for luring my daughter out." He snickered and gestured at the creature at his feet, who tried to get up.

"...that thing is what you were looking for?" Kenth's eyes went wide. "That blood-thirsty creature??"

Unbelivable. Kenth could not think of anything else other than that single word. He felt insulted, betrayed, and angry at the stranger's cold attitude. He was being used by someone, and he almost get himself killed...and Alex...

"You did get your truth, didn't you?" The stranger looked down at Kenth and shrugged as if nothing happened. "Yes, it is her who had been killing the humans in this area. She feeds on their flesh, that's how she survives."

The creature, now standing, shed its layer of shadows. Under the dim moonlight Kenth could make out features of a small girl. She had long, messy hair, and was completely naked other than a stone necklace that hang on her neck. Her eyes were golden, and her puple slitted like a cat. More than that, her ears were pointy and long, even longer than Kenth hand seen from Dante and Irame...

"What...are you?"

Weiyuan could barely hear that voice. But he didn't need to hear the words to hear the emotion that came from the professor's head. His eyes widened, brows furrowed in anger. Just what the hell-?! The teen ran faster, pulling a flashlight from his bag turning it on. ""
PostPosted: Sun Aug 05, 2007 8:55 pm

Herei glanced down at Weiyuan as they fought through foliage, catching sight of the scraps of cloth left by the woman who had just suffered some type of trauma to the back of her head. There was no need to lie or otherwise mislead the students; they would see for themselves when they got there. "Your sister has been hurt," he said in plain English so no one was left out. "Something is attacking the doctor and Alex. Everyone, please be prepared."

To elaborate just a little further - so no one got too angry that he knew this information and hadn't shared - he added, "I gave her a listening device before she left. I just lost contact with her."

If it was at all possible, RuiZhi managed to turn pale as he ran with Herei, gripping the two bags over his back while the other hand held his robes up enough that he wouldn't get tangled. There was an immediate stab of fear, but it wasn't because Alex was hurt, it was because the thing was still there with Kenth and they may not get there fast enough. He didn't need to say anything, knowing that everyone would be alert, that everyone would know what it would mean to the two native boys next to the native teacher.

Somewhere in the back of his mind where his calmness was retreating, he was thankful he had supplies on him to treat wounds; now he'd just pray to whoever was listening that they were treatable.

Elijah was running beside Weiyuan through the dense foliage that crossed their path so thickly. But even so the group managed to continue forward at an alarming haste and for a reason the teen just understood why. Something was attacking Alex and the doctor? He didn't understand what possibly could, but he knew instinctively they needed to get to them as quickly as they could and assist them however possible. His wide eyes danced through the leaves, searching through the forest for signs of what was going on, but said not a word of reply to Herei's statement.

Lina heard only "Your sister" and "hurt."

That was all she needed to put her into a frenzy. Child and condition forgotten, the woman let out a cry and put on as much speed as she could--she didn't get ahead of Herei, but was close enough that if she reached out and tried to grab his shoulder, she could. Pain was ignored, adrenaline racing through her, despite the stabs she was feeling in her gut that had nothing to do with cramps...

The first wave of nausea that hit Dante nearly knocked him over.

As it was, he stumbled forward, managing to make what was almost a fall look like an ungracious stumble before trying to regain the momentum he had before--the headache, the stomachache, the whole aching of his body for some reason.

....no...no, it couldn't be....

Herei slowed his pace just a little, enough that he was next to Dante. Without touching the Advisor, he offered his arm or shoulders to the elf if he should need them, no words being shared; Herei knew that the man would understand if it was necessary. Now wasn't a time for pride, not when the native man knew what they were getting into. "Stay with us, Dante," he said very quietly next to the man, still moving briskly. "We are going to need you."

RuiZhi almost tripped as he ran, stumbling but not stopping, glancing over to see the wild look in Lina's eyes. He changed his pace to be next to her, reaching out and grabbing her hand. It seemed that they both needed comfort for different reasons, but he couldn't let her hurt herself. "It's not what Alex would want," he panted next to her, giving her hand a squeeze, "for you to hurt yourself. Please be careful." He was making good on her request to watch out for Lina; even now, when there was the prospect of death, there was still life to protect.

Dante nodded. <********>, as the humans would say.

Judging by his family's history--mostly light and anima magic users--it was not surprising that he was reacting this way. He'd had to learn to fight it during the Undead Siege on Iliodean--although Irame had to take over. The Darker Arts were her domain. Not his....

Another wave of nausea came over him, and this time he did stumble forward, grasping onto Herei. "....Thank you," he said, just as quietly. "Don't...don't sl...slow down. I'll...hold on."

Lina almost didn't hear RuiZhi, but she did feel the squeeze on her hand.

She rounded on him, eyes narrowed, face incredulous, ready to tell whoever it was to back the ******** off, she had a friend to--and then she saw the boy. Slowly she smiled, and nodded.

"I'll...b'fine," she panted, not slackening her pace. "Y'sis an' I...stubborn folks."

The strange man looked down at the human doctor at his feet, amuzed by the man's helplessness. He let out a long and arrodant laughter, which made Kenth feel even more insulted than before.

"I AM ASKING YOU A QUESTION." Kenth demanded, grinding his teeth and tightening his grips.

"You are pathetic. All you humans are." The stanger stopped laughing and stared at Kenth. Meanwhile, he took off the cloak that was wrapped around him tightly, revealing himself.

The man looked in his thirties, with hard lines and features sculped into his face, giving him a sense of roughness. His body was tan, in a shade of dark red, similar to those of Native Americans. The body was well built, with muscles bulging out of the man's right shirt. Similar to the creature girl, he also had a yellow glint to his eyes with slitted puples. His ears were in the same pointy shape, and under the dim light, two silver piercings would be found on both of his earlopes. The man wore all black, and in one of his hand, there was a small, round stone that glowed purple. The man had a maddening smirk on his face, looking at Kenth as if he was some kid's toy.

"You will know soon enough, my friend. This...is my thank you gift."

The stranger raised his hand holding the stone. There he chated, muttering some strange language in which Kenth had never heard before. Soon enough, the area where they stood was enclosed in a purple glow like the stone's. Kenth shut his eyes in midst of the strong light, and when the light died down, the young doctor was surprised to find himself in front of the mysterious stone temple, surrounded by the green waterglasses.

"How..." Kenth started. His words were cut short by the stranger's explanations.

"You see, my friend. This temple...is where our people sleep in. To your human eyes this is merely a rundown piece of architecture, yet...this is where...where we were sealed away, long, long time ago."

"you...people?" Kenth vaguely remembered hearing about the five non-human races. For a hardcore scientist, however, the young doctor did not pay attention at all to myths and legends about these creatures, even though it was rumored that mankind was saved by one of the races..the elves, to be exact. Kenth shook his head and merely repeated his question. "What are you?"

"We are the people of Luna, which I believe you have heard about before." The man looked down, a little uncomfortable by Kenth's lack of knowlege on his people. "And tonight, they will be awakened...by the life of this young lady right here." The man snickered and pointed to the still unconcious Alex on his shoulder. "And you, my friend, is the fortunate one...you get to watch the show, for free."

Kenth suddenly snapped his head toward the man, giving him a most resentful stare. "Don't you dare touch her. She was never a part of our deal."

The man rasied an eyebrow. "Our deal? Why yes, our deal says that you help me find what you are looking for, and in turn I tell you something useful to you." He smiled, "It had nothing to do with the deal, my friend. She was unlucky to be chosen, that's all."

"THEN WHY WAS SHE CHOSEN YOU b*****d???" Unable to control himself any longer, Kenth started at the man. "I was the human who was with you in the first place. Let her go!"

"Why would you care?" The man mused, "and unfortuantely, you cannot be sacrificed because you are a MAN." He gave Kenth a teasing wink. "Don't tell me you are jeaulous....if you want, you are welcome to die with her after the ceremo----"

The man's words were interrupted by a crushing punch on the side of his cheek.

Kenth didn't know why he was so angry at the man's words. Sure, he was insulted that the man looked down on him, but he felt more angry at the unreasonable feeling of guilt and helplessness. Kenth told himself repeatedly that it was Alex'sw fautl to begin with, that she shouldn't have come back to look for him, that she shouldn't have saved him from the attack, that she should have gone back when he told her to...

It was because of her that he was still alive like this, like a lowly creature to be toyed in the palm of the man's hands.

"Let her go." It was all Kenth said. He head heard the bones in his hand crack as it came in contact with the man's face. He had thrown his entire strengh into the punch...and the man...

"Now, was that really necessary?" The man's words were full of tease, but his eyes gave Kenth a look of murderous intentions. "If you want to play, my friend, perhaps you should---"

"SHUT YOUR MOUTH." Kenth yelled back, "and let her go RIGHT NOW."

"And if I don't?"

Kenth paused. "If you don't...then I'll have to take her away from you."

Irame drew a deep breath as she felt the first wave hit her and saw Dante stumble. She had know! She had been right! She WAS right! There were was something here that she knew and had known and had said and within her something rejoiced. She had told them, and she had waved away her own ideas as she had been taught, but she was right and they should have listened to her. The part that rejoiced at the presence laughed and giggled and she couldn’t help but smile and look over at Dante.

“See Dante?” She asked as she reached out and touched him: wards for elves against such things as they were facing was something that she had learned quite early. “I knew that there was SOMETHING here. I WAS right. People just need to listen to me more, like the royal family SHOULD have, like Ran SHOULD, because bad things like this can happen if you don‘t pay attention to warning sings.” She nearly giggled, then drew back her hand and shook her head. She had been away from such energy longer than she had thought if she was reacting this strongly. She would have to be more careful and look into it later.

“Sorry Dante.” She said looking away from him and started to feel for full vials of blood in her clothes.

Alex and Kenth… Both of them were in danger, and that wasn’t something that Greg was going to take. He pushed himself to run faster, even though he was already right up near Herei, or had been before the other teacher had slowed, as he wanted to, had to get there to help them quicker. He had to help the two of them, or at least one of them once, especially after managing to make so many messes for Kenth and, if he was right about Alex, about just being down right mean to her. This was probably the biggest thing that he could do, or at least the biggest thing that he could think of right now, although he didn’t know how much he could help if the both of them were in trouble. After all they both were a lot… well better than him. As he ran he quickly checked his shoulder holster. Yep he was still armed. Well that was good at least… He supposed.

Herei slipped an arm around the elven man, doing as requested and not slowing down. He'd carry the man if he had to, because he knew just how stubborn Dante could be; he respected him for his refusal to give in, and he'd do what he could to honor the Advisor's wishes. "We should be close," he informed everyone. It had been several minutes since he'd seen a scrap of cloth, which meant they'd either come to where they needed to be, or would be soon. There was no sign of struggle, not in the darkness, so it would be easy to miss the spatters of blood on one of the trees and on the ground.

"I know," RuiZhi said warmly, still running with all his little might as he panted between words, "I love her for it. She loves you for it. One big...happy family. I don't want...to stop you. Just be here...like she would." He didn't look at Lina or try to appear sentimental; he was running on the knot of fear that was clawing at his stomach, speaking from his heart that was hammering hard in his neck. There was a definite change in the area, and he knew that Herei was right that they were getting close. He just hoped it was fast enough.

Irame's ward helped, but...something was off. Something about her casting it...it had a taint of what was surrounding them. So he was left, feeling a little bit better but not by much.

So they were close. Thank Anin.

His hand crept down to his belt, hand closing over the pouch--within which were the things he needed to correctly cast the spells he needed to. He only wished that the other Goddesses had been awake--as of now, however, he could only call upon the strength of Mana.

He prayed that would be enough.

Lina nodded, opening her mouth--then nearly fell over as her head reeled.

She recovered quickly, but the cramps in her abdomen were picking up. She should probably listen--but that was ridiculous. It wouldn't be hurt by her running...and it wasn't like there could be any magic, here....

"Pathetic human."

The stranger didn't even need to swing his entrie arm to repell the young doctor's mindless charges at him. His expression remained an amused one.

"Give it up, you are too weak."

It was true. For someone who had shut himself in the library all day long to train his brains and to absorb more knowledge, Kenth's body fitness was no better than average. The stranger didn't hurt him badly, yet Kenth was already panting from his own movements. Even so, his eyes remained focused on the unconcious woman on the man's shoulder. He wasn't going to let her go, let her be sacrificed like this...he wasn't about to feel the same thing he did many years ago...again.

This was just like the last time. That time, when he could only watch helplessly as his savior almost died to protect himself. He was young back then, and he couldn't do anything, nothing at all...

And for worse, it was all his fault to begin with.

If it wasn't because his jeaulousy toward his brother, if it wasn't the envy at his brother's popularity, he'd never grow to hate him, and he'd never have came up with the idea to hurt him...

But he did, and to his own horror he had trapped himself under that falling object. He should have died by then. And if he did then HE wouldn't have to be hurt like that...

But even if it was a trap, didn't matter if HE knew or not, his brother became his shield, covering him with HIS own body. And when he realized what happened, his brother was on the verge of dying.

And the only thing HE said before losing consciousness was...

"Are you okay, Kenth?"

...Idiot.

He was the one who wanted HIM to die, he was the one who hated HIM...he was the one who wished HE didn't exist.

If HE didn't exist, then he'd lost his life sooner.

And yet...it was all HE cared about. HE was just like that, a complete, selfless stupid fool...

A man, a soldier, who loved his little, selfish brother.

And he wasn't going to let this happened to her again. It was because his own selfish persuit, it was because of her concern...

She was just like HIM. Selfless...idiot.

Except this time, Kenth was not going to be the little brother he was many years ago. He wasn't about to feel that helplessness and guilt again. He'd save her...even if it would cost his life, his own...pathetic life that would have left him a while ago.

"Alex...you idiot."

To the stranger's surprise Kenth charged again. A little annoyed, the man set himself into the same posture as he did last few times. But as soon as he did, he felt a sharp pain on his defending arm. The man screamed in shock, and flung his arm fully at the young doctor, who was sent flying off to the side, his back colliding with a tree.

"What in the world...?" The stranger's eyes went wide as he saw blood flowing from his arm. He looked up at Kenth, who struggled to get up. In his hand he saw a small knife that was drenched in his blood.

"What? Where...?"

"I'm not as pathetic as you thought." Kenth gave a smirk despite all the pain that was surging though from his back. He looked down at the pocket knife, which he discovered from one of the trees by accident. He had a feeling on whom it belonged to. It gave him a little hope. If he could just hurt the man enough that he let go of Alex, then he might have the chance to get her back.

"Now let her go!" Kenth cried out as he started running toward the stranger again. The man grumbled something incoherent as his posture changed. The young doctor took the chance to swing the small knife, aiming it at the man's hand which was holding Alex on his shoulder. The stranger let out a loud goan as the knife hit its target, and with his other free hand the stranger grabbed Kenth's arm, trying to yank the human off and disarm him. Kenth could feel the bones in his arms cracking at the pressure. He grinded his teeth deeply and refused to let go. This was his only chance after all...if he could hold long enough, then...

Kenth's eyes went wide as he screamed in pain....pain coming from his arms, and from his back.

The shadow creature, now somewhat regained her consciousness, was now attacking the young doctor from the back. Kenth felt his back being teared through by that wild beast. If it keeps on like this...his body would be torned apart...

"I don't want to kill you, my friend..." The stranger mumbled in Kenth's screams. He let go of Kenth's arms, and instead put his hand to hold on to the young doctor's body. Feeling that kenth was securely trapped, the man kneed Kenth efficiently in the stomach. Kenth chocked at the sudden blow as blood suddenly sprewing out from his inner organs. And with the force Kenth's world fell black, his hands finally letting the knife go as his body landed on the ground.

"You really give me no choice but to do so..."
PostPosted: Sun Aug 12, 2007 10:57 am

The screams yanked her out of the darkness.

Her veins felt as though they turned to ice, even though she could still feel the warm trickle of the liquid on the back of her head, dripping down her face uncomfortably. Alex opened her eyes just a crack, seeing the ground from a strange height, feeling the pain in her back protesting at being bent. The pain made her sick and she knew she was going to pass out again, but she had to do something, anything, to help the man whose screaming pierced her heart...

Two things happened at once. She saw movement in the trees, only able to discern it because it reminded her of the shadow that she had chased; she knew, however, by the amount of movement that it had to be Herei and those who came to help. That means her captor hadn't seen them yet - they were at his back. The next thing that happened was the man holding her had moved, allowing her to reach her hand back carelessly to her pants and withdraw the hunting knife she had brandished at him before.

Her movement cost her, and she felt the sickness starting to take over. Then the screaming stopped and she heard something hit the ground.

The sickness was gone in favor of pure rage, but her strength was greatly depleted; she didn't care what happened to her, but she had to give the others the chance to hit the man clearly, so they wouldn't hesitate because of her. Alex didn't have the strength to say anything snarky, choosing to focus the last of her will into the knife as she plunged it into his back, using his momentary distraction at Kenth to pull herself over his shoulder.

The woman hit the ground, and her world jilted from the impact. She saw him, too, on the ground, the one she had been struggling so hard to save. As her vision started to turn black, she reached for him, and lost her battle to stay conscious.

Herei had seen a glint in the forest, and had followed it, stopping in surprise as he saw Kenth grab it and take off. So they'd found him! But...something was amiss.

"Those who have the ability to fight at a distance, prepare to do so," he said very quietly under the yelling of the men. Tightening his arm around Dante so that the man could lean against him, he added, "My friend. It's time." He carefully moved the group towards the tree where he had seen the glint, catching sight of the two men locked in battle; Alex was thrown over the larger man's shoulder, and there was something very strange about the way he looked, confirming his worst fear...

Dangit, but that woman was in the way! He didn't know if it was the screams of Kenth or his own will that had stired the unconscious woman, but she moved, and as soon as Kenth hit the ground, he saw her plunge a knife into the other's back, using the momentum to move off of their target.

That man and woman had given all they could; it was their turn to enter the fray. "Now," was all he said, as he waited for hell to break lose far more literally then anyone here could have imagined.
