Oh, and as for the ******** Knights of Steam Powered Destruction, it would make more sense for them to be unmanned, right? From my understanding of steam punk, it would be horribly difficult to move by one person. Some very basic, very rudimentary (and very short distance) remote would probably make more sense.

Actually. Pause that. I'm not sure it makes sense period if we're talking the technology I'm thinking. In fact, I'm thinking the only plausible mecha would have to be fuggin HUGE, size of an elephant huge with a rider on top to control it. It would have to be a hulking, lumbering mess, that some TNT or other such explosives set in or on the right place could easily take care of.

I don't know. Boiling it down to physics, the manned killing machine run off of steam power is just...impossible when dealing with the mechanics we're dealing with. Hell, we still have problems with that kind of suit and we have vastly lighter weight materials to deal with.

Just thinking out loud. I'm sure you people will figure it out or negotiate something or other.

I knew getting that done with Jak would come in handy someday.

To be honest Steampunk has a certain amount of suspension of disbelieve in it. Its like saying airships are a practical and viable means of transportation against say... trains. The point I guess I'm sleepily trying to say is some things can work on the 'if I wish hard enough they come true' law and others well cant.

A big hulking behemoth with a clockwork 'mind'? sure! a steam powered walking suit that punches people in the face with jackhammers? even better! A aetheric-refractal-prism-ray gun that shoots rainbows and makes everyone happy and wan to frolic in the streets... err well... I defer to who ever is running the game on that one...

I personally like playing period characters to the best of my ability, but I love a good old steam automata or auto-loading gear launcher as much as the next man. I suppose it is its own kind of magic though its not 'at will' its still just as vague. Provided you can bullshit it well enough I think there's lots of free room in Steam-punk for the eccentric to the mundane, from strictly historical to the absurd.

Cog: I will now call you boiler butt.

Dante Decker
A lot of good, valid points.

I suppose as a writer, I would be a hypocrite as a writer to say that you can't have some ridiculous things like steam powered mecha suits. I think my roundabout point was that you can have ridiculous (elephant sized automaton) while still preserving some hint of reality. In my book, a machine can more easily push a machine (especially that weight-y), than a human, no matter how strong we're talking, can push a machine like that, especially at angles one would have to in a suit in a humanoid shape. I suppose I wouldn't have such a problem with it if it wasn't a FULL suit, and maybe had some other mode of locomotion, like say the person could get in the suit, use the arms and such, but it would walk itself.

So you can have realism, but a ridiculous steam powered killing machine is still a ridiculous steam powered killing machine any way you slice it. And personally, if we're going for the intimidation factor here, an elephant sized, steam powered, killing automaton being ridden by some crazy mother ******** on top of it like some Carthaginian War Elephant is much more intimidating than a guy in a suit.

Obviously, my intention here is not to say "NO U CANT DOIT CUZ IS STOOPIT", because I do see why someone would want to do it and it's a cool idea. I'm merely doubtful of it's usage in a steampunk setting. What it all boils down to is mediation between GM and player, though.

I just want to see the looks on people's faces when someone without a fully prepared artillery team has to deal with one of my monsters.

But at this point I've got a knight/soldier and some pioneering novice mechanical engineer. If Dante or someone else who's an expert on this stuff is making such an engineer I might have to see about apprenticing him to them. Otherwise he'd have to work for some sort of government or corporation or group. Can't see him working solo as some sort of rich mad-doctor.

...might be I need to reinvent Andell.

I think Cog would flip out if I did that.

Enki Leviathan
Maybe it's because while we're all having fun exploring new characters and creations, you're talking about becoming a force of power and law using force of machines in a world you know nothing about...

Oh, and Latent is done...

Because someone like Dante with over 4 pages of ballistics and artillery is ******** a*****e.

Fish: Though that does sound fun Ive really got my heart on playing a medical doctor, as to do that sort of tinkerer type thing seems to close to Dante... Not that I wouldn't do it, just I think this sounds more fun for me.

Som: Though a GM has some power in a conventional game, in a free from RP there really isn't a limit on power density, mechanical torque or other things that would make such suits impossible. The 'rules' that govern the setting are just as different from traditional reality as they are in say a cyberpunk, or fantasy setting. This is after all essentially the same setting that brought us war games involving British infantry versus Martians.

Because of that its hard to really say such things are not specifically possible. Take things a like Tesla reactors, and clockwork differential engines with intelligence. Both are essentially base points for a lot of steam punk concepts yet that are pure flub. As such the technologies that branch off from that are also flub thus its kind of hard to put a point and say 'hey now that's not right' When really there is no such limit. If there was, the base tech wouldn't exist in the first place.

As long as everyone corresponds to the technological equivalence theory (an Revolver will kill you just as dead as the transpectral distegrator ray) It all comes down to writing. Bad RP or bad writing are equally unexcusable regardless of the choice of medium.

Ed: ******** you, Its not for me at all. Im writing descriptions for other people who aren't familiar with the period and to prevent people bringing in ridiculous s**t like 88mm WWII anti-aircraft guns in a time where fixed ammunition is still in its infancy.

Take your vendettas elsewhere.

******** you right back.

I never said it was for you. I was using what your doing as an example, because Matt thinks I'm infringing on everyone's "fun and creativity" by wanting to bring in Knights with steam powered armour.

While everyone else is talking about ******** artillery, giant mechs and other s**t.

No consideration that a ******** guy in iron casing with a friggin' boiler on his back might be extra susceptible to being blown up, let alone that I'm just trying to bring something unique to the table.

So writing a guide for people that aren't particularly knowledgeable is the same as saying Im setting any 'laws' on the setting? You don't think that same post which contains other things besides Ballistics and artillery couldn't help you just as much as anyone else reading it?

Dragging me into s**t when I just spent two posts saying it was equally possible for you or anyone to run around in whatever conveyance they choose to support your Fish and Cogs ideas.

You're too ******** wrapped up in the fact that I placed your name in something to bother realizing the point.

So, think whatever the hell you want.

No I'm 'wrapped up' about being used as an example of unfair treatment when all Ive done is try and help both of you. Its offensive, and ya it pisses me off to get caught in the crossfire.

God stop the ******** whining.

Would it make you feel better if i said DANTE'S LIST instead of DANTE?

Because apparently all the ******** weapons you have listed are great, but my steam powered Knight is the end of the world.
