Dante turned to Greg, an unusual smile on his lips, one that stated knowledge that the other man lacked. "Go on ahead, Irame, I'll be along in a moment.

Once the girl was out of earshot he turned back to Greg with that same smile, speaking in low, barely hearable tones.

"I'd love to, dear Greg, but--ah, what's the human term you use for it, hm? Ah, right. <******** you."

He let it sink in before whirling around on his heels and following Irame.

((*reads through Lina's post* I used to live in the Texas Hill Country...I miss it.))

The blue eyed teen was walking in just as he heard Herei's speech and instantly he considered his options. If he were to stay behind wouldn't that put to waste his reasons for coming? So far he hadn't done a single thing to benefit the group so why not now go and try to help out as much as he could. It was worth a shot and if they got the answers they needed to help these people, this place and understand what they were up against how could he possibly consider staying behind. He was going, he made up his mind right there and then and though he said nothing yet he stood making no motion to take a seat and get comfortable in the room ready to leave at any moment.

“Oh dear Dante.” Greg called merrily out after him, not seeming to be fazed at all as he walked out the gates after the elf. “I don’t think that now would be the best time for things like that. Besides, there are students around, and other teachers, and who knows what all of them would think after seeing that?” He shrugged a bit. “Now once we get back to the school that’s a different story, if you really want to pursue it.”

Irame looked up at Dante when Greg said that. "What... what did you say exactly?" She asked, raising an eyebrow and looking a bit curiouse.

Dante's eyebrow twitched.

That damned, infuriating, son of a--!

No. Dante breathed in, breathed out. The infuriating human was goading him. He must keep the moral highground.

"It was nothing of consequence, Irame," he said, and quickened his pace to catch up with Herei.

RuiZhi scrambled to gather the two bags, huffing a little as he jogged to catch up to the quickly moving group. He dared not look behind to see who was staying, for he couldn't afford to worry right now, not when it was finally time to do something. Now that it was here, he felt a little afraid and more than a little alone. The boy knew he couldn't fret over his personal fears, even if they were clawing at his stomach in the most unpleasant manner. What could he say to anyone?

The native casted a warm smile at Elijah as he padded to keep up with Herei and Dante, his heart racing although his face was a mask of smiles. He had no idea how much he was mimicing Herei at the moment. RuiZhi quietly followed at a brisk pace behind the teachers, keeping his thoughts and teenage fears to himself while the adults bickered around him.

"Now now children," Herei chided playfully as he quickly approached the forest. He didn't hear the exchange between Dante and Greg, but he didn't have to; the two were like fire and ice, one melting the other only to put itself out in a vicious cycle. As he glanced around to catch sight of some of the students, he wondered who was really teaching who, here.

The man paused briefly at the edge of the forest, looking in the darkness before turning to who had come. Some of the students had stayed, and that was fine; no one had anything to prove, coming out here. He would treat them all as adults, and they would be responsible for their own actions. "We're going to move quickly, so please stay close. If you have a flashlight or other means of light, have it ready." Herei cocked his head to the side and listened, nodding before addressing the group one last time, "It takes approximately six hours to get halfway through the forest, but we have a path that will cut it in half, perhaps less if we move swiftly. If you have any questions, say so now!"

He would give them mere seconds to respond. Afterwards, he'd simply march into the forest, hoping the others listened for a change.

Dante blinked, but otherwise had no indication of his indignation. Really, Greg had started it. The stupid, infuriating human....

Lina looked at Dante, an unreadable expression on her face. She'd heard the murmured exchange, the cold, hard rejection by which Dante had expressed his displeasure.

And she was suddenly reminded of her brother, and their parting. And she was sad. So she simply turned away, towards Herei, with a nod.

"I'm ready."

"As am I."

"Alex?"

The young doctor stood where he was and stared at the woman in front of him. Why...how...

"I thought you went back with the group." Kenth cleared his throat and lowered his gaze. "Why did you come back?"

The woman lifted her eyebrows in silent question as she looked at the doctor, a small smile flitting across her lips. Alex lifted her other arm and looped it through Kenth's, leaning against him and to the side so that she put herself in his line of sight, grinning warmly once she could see his eyes. "For you, silly. I came back for you." There was a part of her that wanted to turn around and throttle him for thinking that they would all leave him here...that she would abandon him after all they've been through. Lucky for him, the part of her that was relieved to see him alive and well won out, making her mostly just giddy.

"There's two boys back there who would have strung me up if anything happened to you," she added kindly, "and it was all we could do to make sure half of the teachers didn't come marching in here for you." She squeezed his arm against her side, where the white tank top no longer existed, only a burned black one that barely covered the length of her ribs. "Me, on the other hand...couldn't have stopped me if they tried."

Subconciously Kenth leaned away as Alex leaned in. He was not angry, but somehow he felt as if he was just slapped on the face. The presence of Alex made him feel like he was no longer alone, but that also made him feel like he had a renewed responsibility. But how could she be here? Herei was definitely not the person to let her go easily. He understood Alex's temper, yet...

"I take it you don't trust my abilities then." Kenth sighed. He wanted to say something else to Alex, but he was confused by his own flurry of thoughts. Part of him wanted to yell at her, telling her to go back, and the other part wanted to make her stay. Kenth decided to hold off on saying something more. Instead, he shook off Alex's arms and walked away, bending down near a tree to continue his work.

"But since you are here, might as well help me out..."

"I trust you," the woman retorted hotly, crossing her arms as he moved away, "I don't trust your little friend. Who, in case you haven't noticed, has left you here like..." Like lamb to the beast, she wanted to say, but remembering the man's comment about an invisible devil made her shudder visibly. It didn't bother Alex that Kenth was thankless, for she was quite used to that; it did bother her that he was out in the dark, alone, searching for goodness knows what in this hellish place and he was still concerned about appearances. She didn't want to be back here, knowing that whatever was here before could be lurking just out of reach, watching, waiting...

The woman sighed quietly, still standing in place. "What, praytell, are we looking for then?" She wouldn't bother to remind him that her eyes were better than his; he already seemed to be suffering a wounded ego without her help.

"I cannot say." Kenth didn't turn, but did pause in the middle of his search and straightened himself up. "The man didn't tell me anything other than the fact that you'll know you've found it...when you find it." The young doctor let out a heavy sigh. This was not an easy task for him...but he trusted that it wasn't an easy task for the stranger either, who, right now, is nowhere to be found.

"Chill, Alex." Kenth gave a short snort and shurgged. "If the man could stay out in the forest by himself for however many days, then surely I can too."
PostPosted: Sun Aug 05, 2007 6:26 pm

Alex frowned at Kenth. "You're content to go on this mans wild goosechase? What could it possibly be that he wouldn't tell you what it is?" How cryptic. She uncrossed her arms, walking towards him and stopping. Her eyes focused on something beyond him, seeing...nothing. Just darkness, she told herself, just her imagination. She exhaled through her teeth, starting to feel a little unnerved. Giving herself a shake, she shifted her gaze back to the doctor. "He speaks English - in China - and the place is being plagued by something unknown, targeting the scientists. You don't even stop to think it could be him, do you."

There was no question. The man had lured Kenth, as far as she was concerned, and he had fallen for it for the mere suggestion of information. The doctor had no idea what was out here, or how...reluctant the other had been to show himself even through she about embedded a knife in his head. Kenth didn't ask, and so naturally, he wouldn't know.

Kenth turned to Alex. Half of his face was hidden by the darkness. But his voice was skeptic.

"So you don't trust me after all. Do you not think that I have thought about these things? If he was the one who started it all, why would he need our help? If he wanted to see bloodshed so bad, then perhaps killing us would be a better idea, no?"

Walking forward, Kenth forced himself to look at Alex again. Her earnest face made him somehow uncomfortable. He didn't want her to be here...

"If you don't believe him, then perhaps you should go back and consult with the advisors. They know what's best in diplomatic situaions." Kenth could not help but to be sacrastic in his words. For those who dared not to take risks, truth would never come to them.

So one'll have to persue the truth, even if it means putting himself in danger...even it means to die.

"Go back...Alex. This place is too dangerous, like you said."

She bristled, her eyes becoming too large and too dark. "Are you not listening? This isn't about me doubting your capabilities!" Alex hissed. Faster than she could think, her hands darted out, grabbing the front of Kenth's coat and pulling him close. She wasn't trying to kiss him, or even BE close; she wanted to make sure he saw the anger and fear that rippled through her eyes. "Were you out here when the shadows came to life? No. Did you get told you nearly lead two boys into a waiting death trap? No." Alex yanked him just a little closer, growling, "Did you escort everyone to safety, run back as hard as you could for someone important and get told to go away?"

She released him then, feeling an unnatural heat rising from her body. Where was this anger coming from? The woman snapped something intelligible in a different language, glaring at the grey-haired man before her. Why was Kenth listening to this man over everyone else?

Kenth was surprised by the woman's sudden action. He had heard what Alex had to say, but anger came faster than digesting the meanings of the words.

"What, you can't expect me to know these when you YOURSELF didn't tell me about it! Sure, keep everything to yourself and expect me to know EVERYTHING." Kenth hissed back, but that was the only phrase he said before he turned away to start searching---or rather, to get away from Alex's gaze---again. He found himself breathing hard, as if something inside of him wanted to break through. His logical mind was blocked by a flurry of emotions that seemed to be coming out of nowhere. Alex's presence...he didn't know why, but he was certain that his mind was somehow distracted by the woman's presence. She was doing something to break him...his way of doing things, his thoughts.

"I'm not someone you should be concerned. Go back."

=====================================================

He had seen it.

The excitement, the fight...he had seen it all. The stranger had hid himself perfectly in midst of thick bushes, observing the woman. Why hadn't he noticed before? This woman...she was perfect! She was just like her....

A dark smirk creeped up on his face. In his hand, the man held a small, round stone that glowed dim purple. He fiddled the stone with his hand while kept his eyes focused on the two humans. Perhaps this woman could be a replacement, that way...
