Ev's are a very crucial thing to consider when training strong pokemon. If you want a Pokemon to end up really strong Ev's are IMPORTANT. Many people don't like to EV train.. it's a little complicated at first but once you get the hang of it, it's a very simple concept.
Ev's stand for "Effort Value" When you defeat a pokemon, you get EV's depending on what you've beaten. Examples:
Rattata: 1 Speed EV
Geodude: 1 Defense EV
Machop: 1 attack EV
Gastly: 1 Special attack EV
Tentacool: 1 Special Defense EV
When battling it's important to consider what you're fighting, because if your Pokemon KO's another Pokemon, it get's the EV for that particular Stat. 4 EV's of one stat = 1 stat boost when you level up.
Example:
You are EV training a Sneasel to have alot Speed. If you run into a Geodude, you should run since that'll be a Defense Ev. A Buizel appears, fight it because it's 1 Speed EV. When you Ko four Buizel in stead of this happening when you level up:
Attack +2
Defense +1
Sp Attk +0
Sp Def +1
Speed +2
It will be:
Attack +2
Defense +1
Sp Attk +0
Sp Def +1
Speed +3If you defeated 8 Buizel your speed would've increased +4
The most I've gotten at one level up was +25
It's awesome :3
But, each pokemon can have only 510 EV's TOTAL. Which is a total of +64
And 255 is the limit for each particular stat. So the best thing to do is put 255 Ev's into one stat and 255 Ev's in another Stat. You can divide them up however you wish, but that's what I always do. So you have the potential to add 32 extra points to two different stats!
Now you're probably like, "Damn.. 255 Buizels.. That sucks..." Well there's plenty of ways to speed up the process. For one thing, if you have the Macho Brace or Power belt, lens, anklet, etc. These Items double the amount of EV's a Pokemon receives when held. Also Pokerus. A special disease the pokemon gt in game. When a Pokemon has it, it'll say PKRS. That too doubles the amount of EV's a pokemon receives.
So if your pokemon is holding a power item, or has Pokerus, instead of the Buizel giving you 1 speed EV, you'll get two. And if a Pokemon holds a Power item, and has Pokerus, it'll recieve four from that Buizel. Also, you can find Evolved Pokemon, they give you more Ev's too.
Examples:
Bibarel: 2 attack EVs
Golem: 3 Defense EV's
Blissey: 3 HP EV's
Golbat: 2 Speed EV's
Tentacruel: 2 Special Defense Ev's.
If you notice, 3rd stage Pokemon give you 3 Ev's and 2nd stage Pokemon give you 2. :3
So if you have both a Power Item AND Pokerus, the most EV's you can get at once is 12. Which is +3 to a stat when you level up, by just fighting one pokemon!
((Pokerus can be spread to other Pokemon by having them in the same party. Pokerus disappears at Midnight, so put any Pokemon with Pokerus back in the Computer before midnight until the next day so it doesn't lose it.))
Now.. Natures are also important to consider. Certain Natures help certain Stats grow stronger.
Here's a good place to see how your pokemon's nature affects it's stats.
Nature ChartSo that's a basic explaination of Effort Value training. It's usually best to do this after you beat the game. Because playing through the game really messes up your Ev's..
Also, you know when you used up all your Ev's when a lady in Sunnyshore City gives the Pokemon an Effort Ribbon. After that it can fight whatever. Or you can just fill the gap with Rare candies.
AND Effort Values are only counted when EXP is recieved. So battles tower, wireless, and Wi-Fi Battles don't affect your Ev's at all.
