"Six...I generally think of six as two threes..." Aysel murmured hesitantly, "Six is a composite number.." She trailed off, smiling sheepishly, and withdrew her hand from Anti, wanting to prove that she was alright...even though she wouldn't, couldn't look at the Broken professor. Spirits above, what had happened to make him like this? She shivered reflexively...what if she too became Broken, one day, somehow? Shoving such thoughts away, she hurridly wrote down her notes, and when she had a pausing point, wrote in a corner a note to Antigone- I'm alright. Just a bit she paused, biting her lip thoughtfully. What word would fit here? Ah- shaken, I suppose.

Astaroth shifted as the question was posed, biting his lower lip in frustration as he dug through his memory, searching for the answer. He'd studied magical theory, literature, rhetoric and the rest but had only given math a passing glance. Now he regretted it. His quill flew across the paper, recording the information as he puzzled out the information. His square was precise and sharp, based around the number 3. Pausing a moment, he filled the nine little spaces in and looked up as the room darkened.

Blinking, his eye narrowed as the brilliant square burned in mid air. The power with which it pulsed made him sit back, shying away from the humming that he couple feel in his brestbone - an entirely unpleasant sensation. His gaze flicked back to his square, in the hopes of seeing a similar result.

Kallisto frowned. She was following along, busily writing down what was being said in the hopes that she might be able to memorize it at a later point. She jotted down the square and filled it with the same numbers as Paxar's though she blinked as the one he sketched in the air fairly hummed with power. It amazed her.

Looking down at her paper she wondered if the square she'd drawn would pulse the same way. It was a little lopsided though, more rounded then sharp... it probably wouldn't. Still, that simple numbers would pull such energy with them was fascinating. Too bad she had no idea about the properties of six were.

Around the room, the students copied the Magic square into their notebooks, or drew their own. A few of them hummed faintly, one or two wobbled in its inky confines on the page, but these seemed to pale in comparison to the glowing marks before them. Paxar on the otherhand looked quite impressed with them. "Excellent efforts!" Paxar lumbered and turned about, then settled down again. "These Magic Squares are pretty things, and if you can concentrate and focus well enough, they can affect the mood and energy of the space around them quite well. But mainly, they are good practise for learning Geometries." The Magic Square burst silently and crumbled into dust. All four of Paxars foreset limbs raised, and his draconic body was forced to reel up and back on his hind legs, making him look far more fierce and impressive than he actually was. All the claws on those front four legs began to madly twitch in the air, and a whole line of shapes drew out in the air in a long line: circles, squares, spheres, pyramids, rectangles, triangles... Like a wall between the students and their Professor.
"Geometries, on the other hand are far more interesting... Each shape has its own properties. You can work these symbols into your magic casting. Shapes into your Circle Magic diagrams, for instance, or emblems on your Golems that give them power. These Shapes are the first half of what makes Geometry so powerful, the second part...The Aspects, are what make it so potent." The shapes flung about him in the air, stopping at different angles and altitudes as if he were a sun and all the shapes planets orbiting him, and then with a sudden stark explosion of light, a number fo lines jolted through some of the shapes, connectiong them, grazing them, driving between them, all spokes coming off the hub that was Paxar. As some were connected they grew in brightness and throbbing intensity, others darkened and glowered sullenly in the air, some fluctuated and others faded, each in response to it's angle and Aspects. Paxar smiled his watery smile at them.

Yambati stayed silent as he worked, mind whirring and focusing and jumping from point to point. His hand moved rapidly, scratching notes and drawing squares and circles and all sorts of things in his notebook - he was taking up much more room for this class than he had for art, that was for sure.

He tried the magic squares again and again, even as he tried to focus on Paxar's lesson. He didn't want to just copy what Paxar had done - he wanted to figure one out on his own. But it was harder than it looked, and square after square was scratched out.

Still, Yambati wasn't discouraged. No, this wasn't like art. Instead... he was even more determined to figure it out.

Ubel found himself grasping the concept rather easily, pursing his lips and working on making a square of his own, squeaking softly as it began to glow, just a little. He would definitely have to practice at this... To get better. He looked up at Paxar, watching the Professor in fascination. Who knew that math could do things like this...

Lior snorted quietly, clearly not as interested in this as everyone else was. He smiled crookedly at Cash, looking just a bit embarrassed. "It's weird... I don't know if I like it," he murmured to the other, setting down his quill and deciding he could just copy Ubel's notes later. The Melancholy was a note-taking fiend...

User ImageBefore anyone could answer his question, Paxar was off, rattling something about numbers and how they ruled the world and ... so on. Mat stared, wide-eyed at the glowing square. Whoa. He barely even caught the explaination of how to do it, let alone understood.

Blinking, he scribbled furiously, trying to get the basics down. Then he drew a quick, sketchy sort of square with nine boxes in it ... and stopped, not at all sure what numbers to put in the boxes. Finally, he just copied Paxar's numbers and was rewarded with a faint glow. But that didn't mean he knew what he had done, or how to do it again. Well, crap. He'd have to track down someone later for them to explain this to him. Slower.

Looking up again, he saw the new forms now circling Paxar and went back to scribbling about Geometry and etc. It was rather doubtful anyone but himself would be able to read his notes.

Astaroth's eyes widened in awe as the shapes burst into life and glowed, or dimmed almost as though were dying. It was absolutely intriguing. Each shape had its own power, that was obvious from before the lines appeared. However, the way they had been moved, their.... Aspects made it look like each had a specific position that made it hum with power or die off. Almost like puzzle pieces. You couldn't fit an incorrect piece into a space but the right piece added to the picture.

It made him smile. He thirsted for more knowledge. Glancing down, he was startled to see that his square was glowing but not humming. He frowned, that meant it was in the optimal arrangement right? Shifting to a new piece, he rearranged it slightly differently and grinned as it glowed brighter. Excellent.

What a useful class. Too bad Professor Paxar was broken... he would like to learn more but doubted how much, really, he'd be able to garner from the man if he was always as unaware as he was at the beginning of class.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.Kallisto, however, was lost. She'd tried her own square and wouldn't be at all ashamed to say that goofy grin that took over her features was the result of surprise that her square actually glowed. Dimly, but it was a victory.

When the lines appeared and the shapes twirled this way and that, she stopped, busily trying to jot down the notes. This was confusing! It made her head hurt. What was the difference between turn something one and two degrees? There was no real difference... was there?

Sighing as she wrote, she made a brief not to talk to the others to see if she could get help. That would very likely be the only way she'd get through this class.

"Substitution," Paxar said suddenly, stepping forward around the glowing shapes, and seemingly forgetting about them. "Is a useful skill." He paused again, blinking languidly around the class, and raising a clawed forepaw. "Especially in a pinch!" He chuckled to himself, obviously very amused with his little quip. "All skills, especially magical ones, consist of two parts. A Required Part, and an Augmenting part. You must always have the required ingredients for the spell, or skill, to work. However, the augmenting aprts are to offer certain strengths, qualities, or properties to the spell work. Therefore, if you have another component with the same of extremely similar properties, it can be Substituted instead." Paxar paused, smiling quite benignly and then continued. "Obviously, a stronger version of a component will produce a more effective result. You can either weigh the essence of an ingredient, or you can look for its rarity. Generally rarer, or more expensive components will yeild a stronger result. However, if you are in a pinch - say...In the Outside, and you can't find an optimum Augmenting component, a Substitution can mean the difference between life and death." Paxar began nodding and smiling nicely, as if he was speaking of tea and crumpets.

After telling Kallisto that she was doing just fine, and smiling at Torrid, whom she was quite interested in talking to later on, she began to pay attention to Professor Paxar.
Almost immediately, she noticed he was a little strange. He seemed just a tad bit off -- as if his brain were working differently than the others. She thought he seemed as if he felt awkward and judged, and it made her feel bad for even thinking he may be different mentally.

She scribbled down furious notes, making diagrams and squares, but not really understanding the purpose to all of it. It was just gibberish to her. Soon enough, Amelia had decided that math was just NOT her thing. She tried to pay attention, but the professor's words went right over her head.

Looking over to the others, she saw them all taking notes too, and she couldn't help but wonder if any of the rest of them knew what they were doing.

Antigone scrawled notes in her lazy, chicken-scratch handwriting, finding that she was more interested in the teacher than the subject matter he was teaching. What happened to him, she wondered with a slight frown, to cause him to be as he was? Noticing the note on her paper, she turned concerned golden eyes towards Aysel, and shifted to write a small note back. 'By the duel?'

Blayk took notes as well, because Antigone would ream her otherwise. With a soft sigh, she rested her chin in her hand, struggling to keep her green eyes open and focused.

'Math isn't the most exciting of subjects,' Cash jotted down, not wanting to speak aloud, for fear of getting caught. 'Maybe we can play a game to help pass the time?' He sent a grin towards the Sanguine, and shrugged a shoulder.

Ubel continued writing studiously, keeping his silence and solitude, listening intently to all that the Professor said, his mind closed to all but himself and the strange-acting male, who fascinated him.

Lior looked as the note was slid to him, before smiling warmly and moving his quill to write as well, a warm light in his eyes. 'Perhaps. It would be a good distraction, especially if I get to see more of your cute handwriting.' He slid the paper over to the Phlegm again.

Astaroth nodded, what the professor was saying made sense. Why settle for something of lesser quality if the better was available? Or, as Paxar seemed to emphasize, use cunning to substitute components? It was an intriguing idea as he had expected simple mathematics.

He delved into the information he'd gathered while studying in the library and elsewhere. Quartz was common enough.... He put up his hand to ask a question, "An example of such substitution would be using an alternate form of quartz, correct? Such as replacing chalcedony with milk quartz - they're both light in colour and high in silica. Would that not work?" While it was a specific example he hoped the general idea was correct.

Kallisto listened, seeing how substitution could be useful for alchemy. Which would mean she'd have to study botany carefully to remember the various properties of the multitudes of plants.

Her gaze slipped from the professor and settled on Yambati. She knew he was good with plants. Perhaps she could approach him for some help... She mused as she recorded notes, looking up as a new student asked a question. It was an interesting idea. She turned to the professor for the answer, wondering if this new student was as smart as his question seemed.

Paxar swivelled his eyes to train on Astaroth and smiled. "Exactly! Precisely! Quite so!" Paxar burbled, clapping two of his hands together excitedly. "And depending on the specific traits of each item - in this case Quartz - the same form of it would not always be best suited to all jobs, even if it seems to have "better" properties. Amethyst, for instance is quite perfect for dousing, whereas its less-esteemed counterpart crystal quartz, or clear quartz, is perfect for cleansing! Obviously, Substitution requires a great wealth of knowledge. But if you keep it in mind as you learn and grow, it becomes applicable to everything you do. And the more you learn, the more things you find you can apply it to. Very important indeed." Paxar inspected one of his talons for a long, silent moment and then suddenly clapped his foreclaws together. "Now then! Geometries!!" Again the bleary peering around the room. "Can anyone tell me what the Art of Geometries is?"
PostPosted: Thu May 31, 2007 2:44 pm

Astaroth smiled as he sat back in his seat, pleased that he had understood correctly. He glanced at Danna for a moment, and leaned in to whisper, "Intriguing isn't it?"

As Paxar continued Astaroth raised his hand once more, "Based on the things you've shown so far, I would think the Art of Geometries deals in manipulating shapes and angles. The strength of a circle versus a triangle or square... and their position relative to one another." He nodded to himself, that sounded about right. He was really enjoying his first class. It all made sense.

Kallisto was about to put her hand up to guess but Astaroth beat her to it. Instead of raising her hand anyways, she jotted down the information Paxar had given and sighed. If it was as that boy said then Math was key to circle magic... But it couldn't be that hard could it? They were just shapes.... a few degree difference in orientation or size couldn't make that big a difference could it?

Not the duel.. she wrote back, then closed her eyes, pausing in everything -including note taking!- to remember the duel, especially the ending of it...and forced herself to resist scooting closer to her love, to press her side against hers and relearn warmth once more. That would be far too clingy..and possibly hinder Antigone in her note taking. Speaking of which..

Taking up her quill once more, Aysel hurridly caught up on her notes, and then quickly wrote Anti another little note- By the Professor. What ails him, to make him so? Shivering a bit, she turned her attention back to Paxar, trying to pay attention to his words, and not he, himself...at the moment, he was speaking of Geometry.
