Trying to think of a song to sing in his head to keep bad thoughts away was really tough when the Voice was screeching at him.
He wasn't a fragment the Voice had created, not really. He had come to this world with one purpose, to get out and to take his friends with him. He didn't want to exist in this world, he wanted to exist in the real one.

So the true king clearly couldn't be the commander...the commander would have known better than to actually make a tower without an elevator. What kind of primitive person would make this kind of suffering on them. "I create this world, and thus I can give you anything. That's what he needed. Screw the song, he wanted his crystal. It was a talisman of sorts, a little family tradition started by one of his great-great-grandfathers or something like that. Upon entering training, they always received a ball, stone at first, completely solid.
As the Harbinger progressed, they were given new balls, cloudy, opaque crystals getting increasingly more clear until their training had been complete. That was when they were given the final sphere, one of the clearest crystal, representing their lives ahead of them. Now the future would be clear.

It was a slow process, but the end was coming nearer, step after step it brought him closer to the voice and the end of this nightmare. demi was gong to try, if not for himself, but for the him he really was. The never ending silence continued to swell around Maple and after so many flights of stairs she wondered how much longer she could take it. True, yes, she was used to it but not like this. Not when there was never a chance to speak or hear the world.
Maybe it was a plot to drive them all mad, just like the Voice. Shatter their worlds and drive them all crazy with climbing towers with no ways to find some peace before the end. She turned to look down, partly to see how far up she had gone and in some ways to see if she could find her companion.

She wondered if the bird boy had made it further up than she had. She hadn't actually seen him since she ran, the look on his face when she pushed him away still burned deeply in her mind. Her paws seemed bruised as she padded along the floor. Could these stairs possibly continue any further. As the steps continued, damien could feel them getting easier to climb, from two steps the three in a single bound. The voice continued it mind games, bargaining for the baser instincts and desires that meant nothing anymore. it really should just save its non existant breath. A silver fox ran past him on the stairs, making him pause. Just then the Voice cried in his head, begging him to stop. It was pathetic, sad. Julian didn't want to be a king, he was perfectly happy just being a student. He'd be happy being a fortune-teller like his father was. He might not have minded being a boogeyman, but he had been slowly losing faith in them and what they were doing.
I don't want what you're offering, Voice. You're wasting your breath.

And so he was back to walking, slowly climbing the stairs. Back to trying to find a song to hum in his head. At least thinking about songs, no matter how blank his mind happened to be, was still helping keep it off other things.
