What he wanted to say, desperately, was: they aren't people. They aren't old women, or little kids, because they aren't people. But he didn't say it. As far as other people having problems with it--as far as the suggestion that there might be shades of grey--that was another thing he didn't want to think about. He'd gotten good at not thinking about difficult things, and so he didn't. At least the foul-mouthed Alpha Dog a*****e in front of him wasn't having any internal conflict. "Thanks for the vote of confidence," he deadpanned, and it may have been sarcastic, but almost might not have been.

He also wanted to ask whether the slithering into the head thing was literal, because at this point he had a feeling that wasn't really that unreasonable a question. And he wanted to ask what kind of tablet--the image in his head was an iPad--and he wanted to ask how he'd pick anything and how long he'd been asleep, but he sat on that too, and instead he said the only thing it seemed reasonable and at least somewhat intelligent to say, shoving his hands into his pockets and hunching his shoulders like he was trying to vanish into his own body: "Lead the ******** way, then."

Pod duty was generally time best used to catch up on mission reports and condense useful information - a lot like study hall, with the additional need to occasionally monitor some bodies held in suspended states. None had ever woken up while Mimsy was here, and she'd been glad for it, because dealing with other human beings was not high on her list of favored activities.

Well, not on it at all, more accurately.

A noise caught her attention, something akin to the opening of sealed machinery and the faint grating of stiff metal. She tilted her head and leaned to peer curiously down the row of pods, discovering that one had definitely opened. Fantastic. With a scoff and a mutter, she plucked up a clipboard and slipped past Quinn and Lucky, offering them a cursory glance over her shoulder to see if they also planned on approaching him.

"Your mother is not here," she corrected the newcomer upon reaching him. The tip of the pen she held tapped against her clipboard, ticking off an itemized list. "Do you know your name? Are you experiencing any ill-effects of your sleep?" She didn't care about asking any of this. By now, she knew the general process of awakening; none of this was interesting.

Her blank stare shifted into a more thoughtful look. Maybe she could fix that.

It was almost a relief to deal with someone who wasn't super saccharine or optimistic. This guy gave every impression life had already ground him firmly into the dirt. It was how he'd felt when he arrived, the island a purgatory without definite hope of redemption or light at the end of the tunnel.

He raised a brow at the other man but offered him no other kindnesses, simply led the way to the weapons cave in silence.

He didn't like the way everything the guy said made him feel like he was being defied but he could presumably deal with it after he was armed. There were always priorities.

Slowly, Lucy emerged from her slumber with an uneasy feeling, as if she was just waking from a strange nightmarish dream. Her pod slid opened and her vision was flooded with blinding light, causing her to close her eyes with a grimace. The scent and sounds were all strange, she would even go as far as to say they were alien, and as her eyes adjusted to the light she was disappointed to find the sight didn't answer any questions either.

She eyed the rows of pods identical to hers as she stretched her stiff limbs. It wouldn't be the first time she woke in a totally unfamiliar place, but this was something beyond what she would consider normal. She pressed her palm into her brow as if attempting to remember her dream would explain everything.

When the memories offered nothing but the shadow of a monster and a blur of a macabre scene, she cringed and shook her head. If she was lucky, maybe she'd find an alien to give her the answers instead. She removed herself from the pod and found her legs as weak as noodles, but the sight of a person distracted her from the fact.

"Where am I?" Eager to learn about this curious place, Lucy unintentionally skipped the part where introductions were expected.

Candace was close by, ready to catch whoever fell out of the pod. She could remember when she woke up and practically collapsed when her body was suddenly finding itself being released from suspended animation. It was good times. "Morning, pretty lady," she chuckled, keeping her hands out and ready should the girl stumble.

"Easy steps~. My name's Candace, I'm here to catch you if you have trouble waking up," the woman explained kindly. "Well, you're on an island, the home base of Deus Ex Machina. Do you want the extended edition or the abridged explanation?"
PostPosted: Mon Aug 05, 2013 2:56 pm

"Deus Ex..." She repeated to herself as her legs trembled and she took the woman's offer of support. Lucy was embarrassed to be seen in such feeble condition, but she wouldn't let the insecurity manifest itself. With her charade of confidence it would be difficult to tell.

"An island?" Well, that ruled out her alien theory. Anxious to learn more, Lucy hesitated as if unsure how to answer the question. "I have so many questions... Please explain everything you can."

"Mhm! Any questions you have, I'm happy to answer. We can walk and talk together, I'll be taking you to pick up your partner and then your division assignment." She nodded at the girl's first question. "An island, we're in the Bermuda Triangle right now. See, you're what's called a Hunter now. We protect humanity against monsters, demons, ghosts, things like that. Everything that goes bump in the night...as well as another race of beings that are currently a much bigger threat than a few monsters." Candace waved a hand as if to say she would explain that later.
PostPosted: Mon Aug 05, 2013 3:22 pm

Lucy watched Candace carefully as if the explanation revealed a foggy and distant memory, but she couldn't imagine why. She stumbled as her new acquaintance lead her away. Whether it was an elaborate prank or some bizarre drug-induced dream, it didn't matter. She nodded, easily submitting to the reality she was perceiving, even if it was difficult to believe.

"Very well. Who is my partner?" Change was no stranger to her. As long as she was here, she might as well get adjusted to it.

Ah, there it was. Who is my partner. Candace chuckled. "I don't know, actually. Everyone's partner is different and no one knows who their partner is until they need them. Mine's Atropos..it's...easier to explain afterward. If you want I can wait for you outside and give you a better explanation when you're all settled and feeling more awake?"

It took a long while for existence to come back to the awareness of the young man. What had felt like ages of nothingness before this one moment. There was nothing here. No feeling, no thoughts. All at once, that dull numbness was broken. Breath, touch, even sight. Bright and aggressive white light burned his barely opened eyes. He gave a short and strangled hiss, his hands clumsily coming up to block the offending light. The air felt kind of hot, and thick. His head felt fuzzy. What was going on?

One step out of the pod he'd been in, and small fragments of memories flickered in his mind. Blood, explosions, mayhem. A trial... something horrible. Why? Was this Hell? Had he died and been cast into the never ending suffering of the after life?

With barely a grasp on his own name, as his further memories trickled in slowly like molasses, the dark haired man took one more step. His knees felt weak, like he'd not had full control of his body in a very long time. He gave a small groan, his gray eyes once again testing how far they could open in the bright light of the room.

Sometimes Molly did like walking down the rows of eerily sleeping people. She liked to wonder. She looked at all the faces and wondered what their story was to bring them here, or what kind of person that sleeper was. She was idly trailing down one of these aisles, and turned, when movement out of the corner of her eye startled her. Movement in the sleep room…

Well…startled as an understatement.

Molly squealed loudly out of surprise when there was a pod open and a young man taking tentative steps out of it. Ah! A sleep that had just woken up! Molly fanned her heated face with one hand, now feeling awfully embarrassed for getting scared like that. She pressed a hand to her thumping heart, took a deep breath, and then her abundant concern started to kick in.

“I’m so sorry for that!” She greeted, her tone warm. “You gave me quite a scare! I’ve never actually been on duty when someone woke up before!” Jeremy didn’t count, and Molly didn’t have to walk him from the pod. She approached the young man, holding out her hands just in case to steady him.

The young man flinched, making a squeak of discontent at the sudden shriek. What was it? More fighting? More dying? His bleary eyes struggled to focus on the girl in front of him. He squinted, unable to get a really good look at her while indoors. Ah... glasses... glasses... no, he was wearing his contacts today, right? No.. maybe he slept in them again...

Jumbled thoughts gave way to some clarity, a hand taking the outstretched offer from one of Molly's. His other hand patted down his pockets, find a glasses case clipped to his belt. Once his frames were snug on his face, his sight became focused. Few.. he'd have to find his contacts later. Glasses were such a pain.

"No.. sorry, I didn't mean to startle you." He apologized with a shake of his head. "On duty?" Woke up? From what..

"Am I..." His gaze looked around, startled to find rows and rows of pods. It was like a psy-fi show. Maybe he was travelling through space! Frozen ina pod until the time came! But that was silly, right?

"Um.." He mumbled in a shaky voice, his frame shrinking. "What's going on?"

Molly held onto the sleeper’s hand gently, but firmly, incase the poor kid might topple over. She remembered being rather disoriented when she woke up as well! “Oh, it’s alright!” She assured. “I just wasn’t expecting anyone to be awake, that’s all! My mistake!” Molly beamed at him, responding well to another kind soul. “Oh yes! I’m on sleeper pod duty! I’m here to greet anyone who wakes up! Oh! Which reminds me…!”

With her free hand, Molly fished into her coat pocket, and pulled out a small stack of 3 x 5 in note cards that she had prepared for herself in the event a sleeper wake up.

She then read from them. “Um…welcome to Deus Ex Machina! We’re in the main training facility on an island located in the Bermuda Triangle.” She had to let go of the sleeper’s hand momentarily to flip to a new card. She then resumed holding his hand. “You’re apart of the forces of men and woman who take up arms against the evils that plague the world and go bump in the night!” She flipped her card again. “You’ll received a more detailed explanation later, but until then, I’m to show you to the weapon’s cove, where you’ll meet your partner! Then the next step is to report in for your division assignment! Followed by getting your dorm room!” She smiled at him then, and tucked the cheat cards back into her coat pocket.

“Oh, and my name is Molly! I’m from the Mist Division!”

The boy nodded, smiling softly. She was so nice. And her hair was adorable. He'd never seen hair like that in person. At least not outside of wig form.

He withheld the urge to as about sleeper duty, as he felt she was going to explain things once she produced flash cards. Wow. This girl really was adorable. He appreciated her dedication, especially even holding his hand through the whole process. So touching.

As she spoke and went on, he really felt like he was watching the plot of a book or manga unfold. Or an anime. Yeah.. this was very anime. This dream got weirder and weirder. His last memory had been Hell, so was this Heaven? It sure sounded fun. And inspiring.

To fight the things that went bump in the night. Right.. that's why he was here. The power to fight back.. he vaguely recalled some kind of agreement.

He blinked, his smile vacant as he processed what she'd told him. Finally he managed a light chuckle, "Um.. My name is Dylon. It's a pleasure to meet you, Molly." He already had her hand, so he shook it in greeting.

"What's a Mist Division?" Wait, did she say weapon's cove?

“It’s so nice to meet you, Dylon! The pleasure is all mine!” Molly gushed happily, and shook his hand as well. “Oh, there are five divisions...or is it six...I keep hearing about an Angel Division..." She hummed, before she dismissed the thought. "Each that do different things! Mist is the…ah…’jack of all trades’ division! We fill in when another division is lacking!” The young woman then paused, and look embarrassed. “Oh, sorry! I didn’t mean to ramble! You’ll learn all this, and much, much more later, I promise!” She beamed at him again.

“Now if you’ll please follow me, I’ll show you to the weapon’s cove…Oh!” She paused again. “But before we go, would you like any hot chocolate or rice krispies treats?” Because Molly always had those on hand for potential wakers.
