He shook his head, "I will be alright." He spared a quick glance at the thorny vine that wrapped around his leg, "Pain is in someways a part of life for me."

Callista looked down at the thorns around his leg and saddness washed over her. She reached out and touched one of the sharp spikes so that she could have some idea of what it was like for him without invading his mind. She pulled back quickly and looked at the small puncture in her hoof, watching the blood form a small bead on it.

"Why would you do that?" Valzar demanded pulling his leg back in case she should attempt to do it again.

Callista licked the blood away. "I'm sorry. It looked so painful. I wanted to have some idea of what it felt like." She couldn't stop starring at the vine wrapped around his leg. It had hurt her, and she touched it gently. She couldn't imagine the pain it was causing him all the time. She looked up at him, watching to see if she could tell if he was in pain.

Callista nodded her head, quickly turning it away from him. She got up and walked over to a plant, studying it carefully for no reason other than to look like she wasn't hurt by his firm refusal to share.

Callista nodded and took a deep breath. "It's ok...I shouldn't have over-stepped my bounds." She was still avoiding looking at him. For the first time since she met him she was frightened by him.

Valzar timidly reached for her mind and retracted instantly sensing her fear, "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to alarm you." He added quietly, "But you shouldn't hurt yourself like that..."

Callista nodded. "It's ok." She risked turning her head and glancing at him. He didn't look scary, but he had sounded so much like a Carpathian ordering her about earlier. "I'm sorry Valzar. I didn't think of it as hurting myself as much as I did learning about you. I'll be more careful, I promise."
