Gion shrugged and, finally full, sat back in his chair. Why do you say it's perfect? he asked Daemon curiously. It's full of flaws!
He wondered what Gaia was like if Daemon thought the Four Lands seemed perfect.

Attiude flaws yes, quite unfortunately so, as with most societies there will always be the us verus the other, that is how national idenitity is form.... which is also the cause of our problems, but I digress. Not all places in the world can boast that everyone has food and shelter, or that the children are taken care of. You'll find as you travel that there are worse places than your own, sure... you've probably have heard of them, but it doesn't hit until you've seen it for yourself.
Daemon then added.
For all the flaws of your society, count the blessings of the few good traits it has.

Gion chuckled inwardly. Well, if you're going to put it that way, he grinned. But sometimes I wonder what the Valar think of everything that goes on. It's been a long time since they've come to see us, though ...

Hmmm... now that question is far out of my league, that would be something more debatable with Yume, but well.... I think the question is.. do you want to know?
Daemon always felt sorry for the deities, especially the very nice ones who have to watch what they created make so many mistakes.

Gion shrugged. Maybe. I think it would be neat to meet one, in any case. Ulani and Ulrich have met all of them ... but they can't talk about them, so there's no point in asking.
Though it would have been nice to be able to, he thought wistfully.

They're not?
Daemon asked curious why the subject was so taboo, which it had to be in a way.

Any elf who tires of living here has the choice of leaving this world without dying, and sailing to Laurefalas - where the Valar live, Gion explained. It's paradise ... but anyone who's been there and come back here is not allowed to return, nor can they speak to others about what they saw or experienced there ... it's the most well-kept secret in the entire Four Lands.
He gave off the impression of shrugging. Ulani and Ulrich went there centuries ago ... but when they heard about the war that was going on here, they came back to help fight - for which I'm glad, we might not have survived if they hadn't - but for that they're stuck here until the end of the world now. I don't know how they feel about that, but they seem to enjoy living here anyways. They can never see their parents again, though ...

Their idle chatter died down finally, and Ulani looked at Serenity, still curious about her earlier comment about Elnara.
"So will you explain now why Gion isn't at home, getting to know his sister again?" she asked Serenity persistently. "It doesn't make any sense to me."
Serenity's face fell just as it had the first time Ulani had mentioned Elnara. She folded her hands in her lap and lowered her eyes sadly. "I'm not sure about the particulars," she murmured, "but somehow ... the others found out that she's a shapeshifter like me, and they rejected her ... she returned to Gaia with the Winters family."
Ulani looked pained. "Well, at least you have your answer now," she murmured, putting a comforting hand on Serenity's shoulder.
Ulrich raised one eyebrow. "To which question?"
Serenity looked at him sorrowfully. "To whether or not I would be welcome back home, even if it were safe for me to return," she replied quietly. "But if the boys rejected their sister, I have no reason to believe that they would accept their mother, who is just the same." She sighed. "I never wanted Elnara to have to go through this ..."
Ulani gave Serenity's shoulder a gentle squeeze, smiling. "But she's with the Winters family," she reminded her. "She's not alone, and she doesn't have to be scared any longer. They're good for her, and perhaps it's better that she's gone back to their world."

Wow.....
Daemon couldn't imagine that, but he knew there were a lot of races where that kind of thing just tended to happen, though he didn't know anyone that old. Luna didn't even get to be that old....
That is very amazing of them, it would take people a lot to be willing to do that.

To do what? Gion asked curiously. Leave their lives here and go live there? Or leave there and return here, forever forbidden to return or speak of their time there?

The last really.
Daemon replied.
To not be able to express the times there.... and to leave people behind... I think that's hard.
He wasn't much to talk about that since he pretty much kind of did the same, only he thought he was going to die and be reborn evenually.

Gion gave the impression of shrugging. They seem happy enough to me, he replied. But then I have no idea what they used to be like ... I don't know if they're different now or not. But yes, I see what you mean ... it would be horrible.
He sighed.

Well they do have each other, and they seem to enjoy your mother's company well enough.
Daemon replied.
Good company and someone to stay with always helps.

Well and they do have a bit of family here, Gion smiled in reply. Their son, their granddaughter, and niece and nephew and their kid ... so it's not like they're completely alone, just as alone as they want to be.

Away from the city crowds... or just away from the majority of the population? For he found it was like just like they wanted to have as little visitors out here.
