Watch your language. And Cloud wasn't whining, he was angsting, both of which are different things. He was guilty over her death, which does not immediately make Aerith a love interest. He was still guilty over Zack's death too, and contrary to many a yaoi fanfiction, he didn't love him in that manner.

Granted, I can see Cloud with either girl, so it's no biggy for me who he actually ends up with.

I haven't played the game enough to know but from how much I've played and the FF7AC movie I would say Tifa. They don't show the other girls in the movie is much though so it's pretty hard.

My friend and I were talking about this once. He brought up Kingdom Hearts as an example.

Really, you can't use KH as an example. In the first one, you'd think it was Aerith because of Tifa's abscence, Cloud searching for light, and the ending credits with hm and Aerith. However, Square throws Tifa in KHII. She says that Cloud "needs someone to surround him with light." Now, she doesn't suggest MORE THAN ONE PERSON. She suggests ONE. But Aerith is seen in the credits sky gazing. So she's probably waiting for him. But Tifa is searching for him. one searches while one waits. Who'd win?

Technically, if you really think about it, Kingdom Hearts I and II do not count as any hint for any pairing, since although they hint at both, neither game is actually tied in with Final Fantasy VII specifically. Granted, they use the same characters here and there, but they do not have the same scenarios and situations that were presented in the original game. Kingdom Hearts does not equal Final Fantasy VII.

That, and the whole thing is an alternate universe of sorts with Disney characters, so I wouldn't take anything in it as fact anyways. The characters are different ages, and different backgrounds.

If something like that were to be considered canon for a Final Fantasy game, then the YuRiPa trio from X-2 would canonically be pixies, Auron would still be kickin', Squall somehow managed to make it to his twenties while Selphie, Seifer, Fuujin, and Raijin somehow manage to stay in their teens (preteens if you consider KHI), and Setzer would have given up gambling and flying his precious airship to beat the youth of Twilight Town with a rather suggestively shaped club.

... You get the point, though, right? sweatdrop

here are some symbols hidden in FFVII when you think about it everything has a reason:

Names--
Aerith/Aeris's name is one form of a Latin word for "air" or "cloud". "Eris" is the Greek goddess of discord and strife ("eris" also means "strife" in Greek). So, Aerith's name can be translated as "cloud" and also as "strife". This is just one more indication of the mystical connection between Cloud and Aerith. Aerith's name has other meaning as well. Her name can mean "flower", which is appropriate, since she was a flower girl. "Aerith" is also an anagram of "I Earth", signifying her relationship with the planet. Also, since "Aeris" is pronounced like "heiress", this demonstrates her role as the last Cetra and rightful heir to the planet.

Tifa's name, on the other hand, is quite different. "Tiferet" is an aspect of the tree of life (along with "Sephirot"). Tiferet represents beauty (she is beautiful), balance (she is very athletic), and love (she loves Cloud). However Tiferet also symbolizes self-sacrifice to the Christian Kabbalists and the "will to carry one neighbor's cross". This refers to Tifa sacrificing her own happiness at the end of FFVII when she realizes that Cloud wishes only to be reunited with Aerith. She hangs her head in resignation, accepting that Aerith is the only one in Cloud's heart. Tifa would sacrifice anything to make Cloud happy. This includes her own happiness. Even Tifa's surname of "Lockheart" is symbolic. The two words "lock" and "heart" clearly show Tifa's inability to express her feelings to anyone, especially Cloud. It also shows that Tifa keeps her emotions hidden deep within her, under tight lock and key. She puts on a facade of happiness to hide her own doubt, insecurity, and sadness.

Clothing--
All of the symbolism in the game points toward Cloud and Aerith being the true couple of the game. Want to know more? Go here. This site is very impressive. Everything on it is backed up with loads of research. It shows that Cloud and Aerith were the couple in the game, while Tifa was meant to be portrayed as a tragic character. For example, just look at the colors each woman wore. Aerith wore red, the color of love in Japan. Tifa wore black and white, which are symbols of mourning and misfortune in Japan. Another example is that of Aerith's ribbon. Soul mates are portrayed in Japan as being connected by a ribbon or string. This is backed up when we realize that Cloud and Aerith are connected on a deeper level (Cloud speaks with Aerith in his dreams, Cloud can sense Aerith's presence, etc...). These examples are just barely scratching the surface of the symbolism involved in FFVII.

See what I mean? And, on the Coke label, Cloud and Aerith appear directly below Squall and Rinoa, a canon couple. Has Square ever done this for Cloud and Tifa? No. In fact, Square has endorsed ClAeris as a couple right along with canon couples for awhile now. As you probably know, Square releases a lot of figures with each Final Fantasy game. What you may not know is that there was a special cold-cast sculpture of a scene from FFVII released. That scene was of Cloud lowering Aerith's body into the water during her funeral scene. What is interesting to note is that, later, with the release of FFVIII, Square released yet another cold-cast sculpture of a scene from FFVIII. This time, it was of Squall and Rinoa, during the ball at Balamb Garden. So, once again, we see Cloud and Aerith paired up in a piece of official Square merchandise. Not only that, but they appear to be endorsing Cloud and Aerith as a couple, right along with Squall and Rinoa.
Another hint of this type is in the latest release of FFVII (FFVII: International).Pictured on the first game disc is Cloud, the second disc, Aerith, and the third disc, Sephiroth. The reason I bring this up is because of previous FF games. For FFVIII, Squall was pictured on the first disc, Rinoa on the second, Seifer on the third, and Laguna on the fourth. With FFIX, Zidane was pictured on the first disc, Garnet on the second, Steiner on the third, and Vivi on the fourth. Do you not see a pattern? First disc= hero. Second disc= heroine/love interest. The other discs show either a villain or other, "less important", characters. So, where is Tifa in regards to FFVII:International? On the bonus fourth disc with everyone else
.

now for offical artwork biggrin

Cloud and Aerith appear together in official artwork by Yoshitaka Amano. Some people try to argue this point by saying that Amano had "nothing to do with FFVII", which is completely untrue. Amano was the character designer for all of the Final Fantasy games until Tetsuya Nomura took over for FFVII. Amano still did much of the visual design for FFVII and much of the artwork, even though Nomura's was also used. So, yes, he was involved in FFVII and his artwork is considered official. This should be obvious when looking at Amano's designs for the characters of FFVII. Many of the FFVII characters resemble the original Amano designs. Amano's artwork is still considered appropriate and significant today, as it is displayed with all of the official FF artwork, right alongside that of Nomura. In fact, the cover of the FFVII Original Soundtrack is Amano artwork of Cloud with Aerith (the same image that is the background for this page). The OST was released after FFVII. So, why use this artwork on the OST if it is not appropriate? Simple. Amano's artwork portrays exactly what was intended-- CloudxAerith. Some examples of Amano's CloudxAerith pics... (the background of this page is Amano art of Cloud and Aerith, entitled "Tranquility")...

Still not convinced? Do you still think Amano's art of Cloud with Aerith means nothing? Well, take a look at these...

Shuyin and Lenne from FFX-2. Again, the character designs were by Nomura, yet Amano drew them anyways...

So, in case you still haven't figured it out, let me clue you in... Amano only draws canon couples. Do you see any drawings by him of SquallxQuistis, AuronxLulu, or CloudxTifa? No. Amano will also draw the antagonist and protagonist (villain and heroine) together, portraying light and dark. Some examples of Amano art with the villain and heroine together are his art of Seymour with Yuna and his art of Sephiroth with Aerith. Some people claim that Amano's art of Sephiroth with Aerith is romantic. I am sorry to burst your bubble, but since when do romantic couples threaten each other? That's right... In one of the pictures of Sephiroth with Aerith, Sephiroth is holding his sword to Aerith's throat. Yeah, watch out for the romance there, buddy... XD Amano will also draw friends together, as he drew Cloud with Red XIII. However, do you once see Amano portraying Cloud with Tifa? No. And Amano was quite aware of the changes to the storyline, including the death of Aerith and the addition of Tifa (added late in the game). However, he still did not draw Cloud and Tifa together. Tifa is portrayed alone in Amano's works, as she was in the game, and as she is in Advent Children. So, my question for you CloTis is: If Amano's art is considered canon for all of the other Final Fantasy games, then why would you claim that his art of Cloud and Aerith is not considered canon???

Oh, and for all of you CloTis who claim that Amano's art means nothing... why, oh, why are you asking for a CloTi pic from Amano??? Yep, that's right. The CloTis have made up a petition in which they pathetically beg Square for proof of Cloud and Tifa's "love". Why is this? Because they don't have any proof of their own. What is amusing in this petition is their request for a "romantic picture" by Yoshitaka Amano. Now, why would he want to do that when Cloud and Tifa are not, and were never meant to be, the true couple of FFVII? He already has art of the true couple of FFVII, in case you hadn't noticed, CloTis. Oh, that's right, it doesn't count unless he draws Cloud with Tifa, right? *Sarcasm* This is typical CloTi hypocrisy right here, folks. Amano's art of Cloud and Aerith means nothing, and yet they beg for Amano art of Cloud and Tifa to prove that Cloud and Tifa are canon??? Gawd, I will be laughing for weeks... XD
