"Yes," Donovan replied back.
He hadn't expected to have this conversation until after the Hunt, but now was just as good as later. Either way the conversation was going to happen.

"I think ..."
Celebor paused thoughtfully, then continued, "I think ... I know a lesson I would like. I don't know where I would learn it ... not from Grandma, I've seen her book. I want to learn how to make fire. Magically."
To make times like this a bit easier.

Donovan's mouth nearly twitched, only because he knew it was a really, really bad idea to get Kara to teach Celebor how to make fire. Though it at least told him that Celebor would wish to continue on the hunts.
"I'll talk to my old man," Donovan muttered, "Unless I can find someone else, I might regret that."

"Thanks," Celebor murmured with a nod, though his eyes were far from relaxed.
He moved to start his watch duty, but hesitated a moment and then turned back to face his grandfather again.
"Donovan?"

Donovan wasn't sure what he was waiting for, but he knew there would be at least more than one conversation with Celebor before this was all over. The older man looked at Celebor, waiting for that other small talk.

Celebor's eyes were dark and uncertain, as they had not been since he had been a child - a long time ago, for him, though admittedly not as long for others.
"What happens to the dwarfs and humans here after they die?" he asked softly. "Mom talks all the time about what happens to the elves ... but ... what happens to the other races?"

Donovan had never thought about it, it was a cultural context he had not thought about it. He thought about it, and knew it was not a question he had ever asked.
"I don't know, Lin probably does," he replied.

Celebor was a little surprised by that, but he only nodded faintly. He had no idea why Lin would know, but then, she knew a lot of things that most people wouldn't care about.
"I'll wake you in a few hours," he murmured, turning away once more.
Maybe he would have a chat with his mother when he got home again.

Donovan nodded, "See you in a few hours then."
Arranging things near by, Donovan set down a blanket before taking his leave of sleep.

Celebor indeed found it impossible to sleep that night - or the next - but on the third night after having rescued the children he was simply so exhausted that after taking his shift, he slept the rest of the night through, and Celeborn had to wake him in the morning. From then on, he slept much better, though from time to time his dreams were dark, but by the time Celeborn told them that they had finally caught up with the second group of slavers, he was back to his old self.
Of course, it helped that the children were there, distracting him and reminding him constantly of the reason why he had had to take a life - and the more he talked with them, the more he learned what exactly they had been through with the slavers, the less guilty he felt about killing the man.

Celeborn stopped the cart behind a rocky overhang next to the river and climbed down, double-checking all of his weapons.
"They shouldn't be far ahead," he told Donovan and Celebor, "so Celebor, you stay here with the children, as we had said at the start, and Donovan and I will go after these guys. Stay here with them, we'll bring the other children here when we can."
He paused, looking around a bit.
"Be careful, never let your guard down," he warned. "You're responsible for these two on your own until we get back."

Donovan checked his weapons one last time after he had dismounted. Everything looked to be there, which was good, he mused on this as he let Celeborn give last minute advice.

Celebor nodded seriously, his hand tightening on the hilt of his sword.
"I'll be fine," he promised solemnly. "Just worry about those other kids that you have to rescue."

Celeborn nodded, then clapped the teen on the shoulder and smiled.
"Good man," he said proudly. "We'll be back as soon as possible. Might be a day or so, depending on how far ahead of us they are and how it all goes down. See you then."
And he turned and mounted Celebor's horse, then moved to join Donovan. "Ready?"

Grabbing one or two things before stuffing them into whatever hidden places he had on his person, Donovan mounted once more and nodded.
"Yea, let's go," he murmured.
The sooner the better.
