Natural Selection is not evolution itself, but rather an evolutionary process. It requires a variation of traits within a population, traits which must be heritable (passed from parent to offspring). All individuals in the population will then leave more offspring than are able to survive. Some will live to reproductive maturity, others won't. Overtime, individuals with an advantageous trait that helps them survive in an environment will become more commonplace, while those with disadvantageous traits will not survive as well, eventually becoming rarer and rarer.
