Ulani and Serenity also came into the kitchen, and as Serenity took a seat, Ulani made herself busy getting more dishes and putting more food on the table.
"Ulrich, my son Gion," Serenity introduced him. She explained how she had found him traveling and had joined up with him.

Well even she's still young, Gion replied. But she's been out in the winters for the last ... twelve years. So I guess she would have experience with them, yes.
He took some of the food and started eating.

Besides she's your mother... mother's tends to worry.

But our winter is nothing like this, Gion reminded Daemon as he ate. But yes ... I can see that making Mother worry more.

Ulrich raised one eyebrow at Gion, then glanced at Serenity. "He seems a bit quiet ... you're sure he's your kid?"
Serenity nodded slowly. "He has no voice ... apparently he hasn't spoken in years. Not since Elnara first disappeared."
Ulani took her seat again, joining them once more. "What happened to him?" she asked.
Serenity shrugged. "No one knows ... not even Gion. There is no explanation ... even the healing water did nothing to help it, apparently."

Yes... I know that too, but what I meant is that she could have experienced many winters instead of none at all.
Came the reply as he paused for a moment.
So what are this Ulrich and Ulani like?

Gion looked up at his distant relatives, but they were paying attention only to Serenity.
He shrugged inwardly. I don't know quite yet, he replied to Daemon. They seem nice enough ... but we just got here and I haven't had a chance to speak with either of them yet ... I don't even know whether or not they know sign language or not ...
He continued eating. It seemed as though his appetite was only growing, the more he ate ...

Hmm... .well we have plently of time to find out.
Daemon answered cheerifully now that the worry about being outside was gone.

That's true, Gion agreed. They seem pretty happy that Mother and I came here ... I guess that's a good sign. After all, not everyone would be happy to have two more people to look after when food's so scarce.

Hmm... good point.
Daemon had never thought about that, but then again he only lived on city outskirts so that was never really an issue.

Gion kept eating, and he couldn't think of anything to say to Daemon, so instead he 'showed' him an image of Ulani and Ulrich.

Questions flited through his mind as he saw the two, he wondered what the two were like. They looked like a nice pair though.
So that's who they are.

Yup, Gion replied, glancing up at the two again. Elnara said they're really nice ... she liked being here with them. She said they didn't care that she's a shapeshifter, just like they don't care that Mother is. But then, they were the first to intermarry, so I guess they kind of faced some of the same prejudice ...

Intermarry?
Daemon was kind of confused because they looked to be the same, well except for hair and eye colouring.
Oh wait... you mean, they're not from the same country of elves.. so that's considered intermarrying.

He's a Westland elf, she's a Southland elf, Gion explained. When they got married, it was still very much a forbidden thing ... not that they cared. From what I hear, Ulani was actually considering marrying a human for a while - now THAT would not have gone over well at all. Not at all.
