The moment they were released, Jove scurried into position and began piling up the walls of his fort. He was having misgivings already. The last time he defended an area he had been attacked by crabs, nearly washed away, and in the end, his great castle had fallen. He had loved that sandcastle, and it still brought him pain to think about it.
As distracted as he was, the pup didn't search far for materials. He frantically grabbed what was nearby and shoved it into place.

Ulmuka had never built a fort before. He'd never had any children to play with when he was younger so he hadn't had experiences like pillow forts or forts made of couches.. they didn't get snow in his part of Halloween so he'd never even built a snow fort before.
He started with the dirt wall, looking around at the others for pointers. He was careful with the vines, grabbing double the amount, draping them delicately over his building. He found a lot of sharp rocks and so he placed them all around his construction.
As a finishing touch, the strix jabbed sticks into the outside of his fort as a deterent. It wasn't pretty, but it would work.

Lifting up the bow, Jove fell into a similar routine as the previous day. Get the arrow in place, pull it to his ear... And release. Today the bow was a bit heavier, the pull a bit tighter. The mannequin was a bit sturdier. Perhaps the pup would have nightmares about them after this day, he had only just managed to avoid being beaten up by them on previous days...

YOU HAVE AN ARROW IN YOUR KNEE FACE.It's shamble was halted by the ricocheting arrow on the previous draw, but Jove suddenly became aware of how much faster it was moving. It would reach him much quicker if he couldn't fight it off or knock it out! Taking aim again, the nervous pup let a second arrow fly. YOU HAVE AN ARROW IN YOUR KNEE FACE.Jove quickly drew another arrow, notched it, and let it fly into the mannequin's shoulder. He was starting to get smoother with that action, reaching back over his head for an arrow from the oversized quiver. In truth, he didn't know the equipment looked so big on him, it was fine on Tybalt. And all the other normal, teenage-sized students. So the prideful little pup thought nothing of it, unaware he looked very much like a child trying to play an adult's game. YOU HAVE AN ARROW IN YOUR KNEE FACE.Jove tried to launch the next arrow, but his finger slipped too early and sent the arrow off on an angle. It sailed past the mannequin, leaving it to slump forward at an alarming pace. This, Jove thought, would be more like hunters. They were faster on their long legs... And with a fort like this, even with only a little dirt wall and sticks in between them, maybe he would be able to duck their nets? It gave him something new to think about, until then the Halloweeners had mostly just... attacked. Without thinking about their terrain or the tools around them. This was definitely the way to go against a single opponent, with distance in between them. But... what if there were more than one mannequin? More than one hunter? The pup would have to refine his skills, so taking out one and then the other would be possible in that short distance. It was apparently impossible to keep living without one's head, and they couldn't absorb FEAR from around them to get better in a hurry. YOU HAVE MY DAGGER - IN YOUR FACE. Ulmuka hid in his fort until the dummy was close by. He used the element of surprise to leap from inside and attack. He'd gotten the gist of fighting the dummies over the past few days. He wasn't sure if his speed or instincts had improved but he found it easier to dodge the mannequin's attacks. Unfortunately the mannequin decimated his fort as soon as he was out of it. At least it took some damage! Jove felt a little wave of inadequacy sweep through him before he reminded himself, these scarelings probably played with toy swords and bows, not rubber bones and rawhides. They would have been prepared from the very start of their lives to wield a dagger or a spear. No wonder the students of Halloween with their diverse backgrounds and histories seemed so pathetic in the eyes of these tribesmen. The pup would have to grit his teeth and bear it, the mannequin was shambling closer and closer, and it had been a few shots since he had done it any damage. Maybe his pull was getting weaker... He had to keep up his energy, and keep pulling back that string with all his might! Perhaps... perhaps he should have gone to sleep the night before and rested, instead of staying awake all night to look at the stars. For some reason he just couldn't get used to the way the hammocks rocked with every move...
