9 had a lot more of a lighthearted feel to it. It's not really true to the FF series like how 7 and 8 aren't true to the series. FF has always been an epic journey deal but 7 and 8 pride themselves in an overly serious manner. 9 is the backlash from old school fans who disliked the modern cyberpunk feel that they had and so the FF series was reverbed back into a light hearted romp, but it prided itself in being light hearted. 9's the polar opposite of 7 and 8.
X in all honesty is a lot more true to the FF series then anything after 6. It doesn't take itself too seriously and yet it's not too light hearted. It develops all of it's characters, it gives you an epic story and it has a new and innovative levelling system. The only thing I had against X was that it was too linear.
Yeah... I guess that's why I liked it.
sweatdrop The medieval, not-so-damn-serious thing sorta got to me better than the whole 7 and 8 thing. Not to say that they're not true Final Fantasy games, and I actually did enjoy playing them, but 9 is just my type I guess.
Yeah. The linear thing bothers me. And I like the characters, but they were kind of just... eh. Especially Yuna
gonk I never like the female leads in the FFs, I think. (And I hate the battle system in X-2).
gonk Which is why I want Fuuin no Tsurugi (Fire Emblem 6)... you choose the route you take, which means extremely different scenarios and a better choice.
3nodding I wish they had done that with Rekka no Ken (the one that got released here).
