"I'm not worried about losing sleep. I'm more worried about you not having a restful one. You've done this before, in the middle of the night, but usually you calm down. What is it that is haunting your dreams, Kin-sempai? You can tell me, I won't laugh or anything. I'm your friend."

He sat down next to his friend and looked at him. He didn't like his friend being so troubled, especially when this was suppose to be a psuedo-vacation for him. He should be having fun!

"That rat. It came to me and has been telling me if I find truth that I might loose myself and not ...." he started to say and went dead silent. Tears flowed down his cheeks. "I .....I .....that rat just wants to hurt me like it did before. But you know what" Kinnara wiped his tears from his face. "I am going to find out the truth."

Bijin frowned as Kinnara started to cry and just wrapped his arms around his friend. He petted the other's hair until he stopped shedding tears then released him. The younger boy, though with a wise air about him looked into Kinnara's eyes.

"Kin-sempai, I'll help you find your truth. And I'll do my best to protect you from the rat if I can. I don't want my best friend getting hurt. And maybe, if I'm with you, you won't lose anything."

He wrapped his smaller arms around one of Kinnara's as he sat beside him and smiled brightly up at him.

"Friends always help each other, no matter what. And you are my friend, so I promise to help you any way I can. Ok?"

"Alright. Thanks," said Kinnara with a nodd. "How about we go get some breakfeast?" Kinnara got out of the bed and went to the bathroom to wash his face a bit. He poked his head out of the bathroom. He looked a bit more refreshed.

"Yeah! Breakfast!!"

He jumped off the bed and exited the room still in his little night shirt. It was kinda cute as it reached almost down to his knees and had a little fox on it. Bijin also grabbed his stuffed fox before he left.

"Okaa-san! What's for breakfast?"

She smiled as each boy entered, her room was equiped with a small kitchen so she had made them each their own breakfast. Bijin's included rice, miso soup, pickles and grilled fish. While Kinnara's was more traditional of eggs, bacon, and pancakes.

"Ne, Kin-sempai! Time to eat!"

Kinnara like his eggs bacon and pancakes. He didn't eat his pancake with anything except for butter on top. He also drank some green tea with it. As Kin filled his belly full of food it made him happy.

"Alright boys, its time to pack up and get moving. Bijin, please wear your jeans today. Your skirts and dresses won't be comfortable."

Bijin pouted as his mother cleaned the table off and agreed with a sigh. He hated jeans for some reason, but they were they best thing to travel in. He ran back to his and Kinnara's room and quickly showered and changed. He looked really different outside of his girl clothes, more like the boy that he was despite a sweet face. He helped Kinnara pack up their things and deliever them to the bus they would be riding.

It took a few hours to get to the place they were staying, a small inn out in the middle of the country. Apparently you could only walk to the temples they would be visiting so they would be staying at the inn for about four days. Bijin got really excited as he pointed out they had hot springs to Kinnara. It had been a long time since he had enjoyed a hot spring. The inn itself was very quaint and didn't have very many guests at that time. It was very traditionally Japanese with sliding doors and beds on the floor. Bijin carried his stuff into the room he and Kinnara would be sharing again.

"This is great Kin-sempai! I can't wait until we can use the bath house! But okaa-san says we have to go to the temple first."

Kinnara put on a clean change of jeans and a white t shirt. He had also pulled back his hair and braided it to keep it out of his face. He then looked at Bijin and was a bit shocked to see that he actually looked like a boy. It was somewhat better looking to him then seeing him in a skirt but he would never tell Bijin that.

Kinnara could feel air of the hot spring it felt good.
"Hey Bijin do you need help or anything," said Kinnara.

"No, I'm ok. You sure you don't mind going to the other temple before we go to yours? You don't have to go with us, you can stay here and explore the inn. Just wait until I get back so we can both go to the ousan!"

The boy smiled up at his friend while he collected a notepad and some pencils to write down anything they might find during their research.

"Umm ..sure I will wait outside," he said sitting down on a near by bench. "Don't worry I don't mind the wait. Just let me know when we will be heading out again." He then pulled out a book from his pocket and began to read it. It was all how to speak Japanese.

Bijin and his mother disappeared off into the temple for a few hours going over scrolls. They had a strange system that, from the outside, didn't seem very efficient. Bijin would walk along the rolls of scrolls and run his fingers over each. If he felt something inside him when he touched a scroll, he would pull it out and his mother would translate it. They didn't get much from their work, only securing a smaller area to search for Bijin's fable. The boy sighed a bit and walked back outside.

"Ok Kin-sempai. We can go to your temple now. We couldn't find much here."

He seemed a little sad at this, he wanted to know what his story was. He wanted to know how it would end and what was expected of him. He and his mother helped Kinnara find the temple of the Ox. It was a larger temple, with cattle grazing on near by lots. Outside the temple where two statues with red clothes tied around their necks, like the one the monk in the cat temple had given to Kinnara. Both Bijin and his mother bowed to the statues and placed small offerings of friend tofu at their feet.

"These are kitsune statues Kin-sempai. Spirit foxes of the rice god Inari."

"I though Inrai was that one cooked sushi?" he said tilting his head. he wonder why they always offer food. He shrugged. He really didn't have anything to offer except for a stick of gum in his pocket which made him feel bad. He then looked up at the cow statue and squinted his eyes. For a moment he thought he saw a rat put a cat off the head of the cow.

He blinked again and then rubbed his eyes. Nothing is there. Was he just dreaming or was it really the rat taunting him. His tail got all poofy and puffed out a bit as it swayed. He looked like he was very nervous and scared.

"No, Inari is the god of Rice. He has pure white kitsunes that pull his carriage and act as his messengers to mortals. We always offer fried tofu because its their favorite food. We want them to like us so they don't play tricks on us."

They all walked into the temple when Bijin's mother noticed Kinnara's change in behavior.

"Kin-san, are you alright? You seem nervous?"

She stroked his hair, like you would a cat to calm it down.

"mmm.," he then looked at Bijin's mother as she stroked his hair. "I umm...I am fine. Sorry Just saw a dog." He then gave one of those don't worry smile. "So um I guess we go in right?" He started to head toward the temple door.

"Hai, just be respectful."

The group walked in and bowed to the monks. Bijin's mother asked the monks if they had any scrolls about the story of the zodiac and motioned to Kinnara. The monks smiled brightly and nodded before leading them off to a side room where there were a great deal of old scrolls. They searched for a few moments and finally handed them about 5 scrolls. Bijin's mother sat down on the floor so Kinnara and Bijin could look.

"Lets see......this one tells the actual story...the race, the winners, the losers. Paints it into a poem of sorts..."
