I only use the default name when I think it suits the character the best or I just can't think of anything better.

My chemist in FFT was named Marie in honor of Marie Curie. xd I named a soldier in PB "Bruce," since he was stupid and useless, in homage to Monty Python. My black mage was named "Nachos," due to a terrible inside joke.
Basically, I name them so that I can remember who's who.
In RPGs, people keep their names. Once Tidus was named Bob, though...
My initials spell "BAH." I have to use them. 3nodding Though every now and then, I pretend my name is Alicia Sarah Silverlake. What kind of initials are those? xd

With role- playing games, I keep their default names
simply for conversation's sake. Otherwise, I use the
name generator and go with my favorite choice(s).
And, when neither of these options are available, I
implement my Gaian name, or a shortened version
of it, when I'm not using my Earthly one.

RPGs = Default name
Otherwise I use Nhiilaa or Idillian.

I use KAT for high scores (my rl nickname is conveniently short and useful for gaming purposes) and usually the default character name in RPGs. I named my Guitar Hero band Nabudis, though, as FFXII was sitting next to the GH case.

I've always used Spooky Sez for things like that. If it's an arcade game 'Sez' fits in fine. Most other games I just use 'Spooky'.
