Daemon the Sword

PostPosted: Fri Mar 02, 2007 11:48 pm

The sword was silent for a while before Daemon finally replied.

It must have been named a very very long time ago indeed. Either the cave will have collapsed in on itself by now or it would have gotten deeper.

Unless the cave is as it always was, and it was rain that changed the top of the mountain, Gion debated. After all, rain only affects what it hits- and the cave of course is under the mountain, so it may well be as it always was.

He paused thoughtfully. I think it was named at least two winters ago - perhaps more.

Hmm.... well that's one way of putting it.... but your winters are long....

Daemon mused on this thought, he couldn't imagine living like that.

They are, Gion agreed. I sort of wish that I had been born early enough to see some of the winter before summer came, but really I can afford to wait - as long as I don't do something stupid and end up getting killed first. Not that I'm planning on it ...

You're a bright young man, Daemon told him, It's the stupidity of other people you have to worry about.
He said this with such bluntness, Daemon had seen way too much.

Gion smiled broadly. Thank you, he thought. He laughed. I have to say, it's the first time I've been complimented by a sword ...

He smiled faintly. Or by anyone, for that matter ...

Besides Yue, that is. And Triton ...

Daemon made a huff sound. You should be a bit more often, though I suppose that is why you are the way you are. And you turned out fine, but still!

Granted this was Daemon he compliented a lot of people when he thought it was valid. Let's not go into what he did for his kids.

Gion ran his fingers through his hair and shook out a bit of sand.

Did you have any siblings, growing up? he asked Daemon.

I had one... an older brother named Gabe.

Daemon replied honestly.

I haven't heard from him, tried sending letters but they kept getting sent back.

Ah, Gion smiled sympathetically. Then I guess your relationship with your brother is rather like mine with my brothers ...

Yes well things had always been rocky since my gift appeared but ah well....

Daemon sighed a bit.

I suppose it was to be expected.

Your family feared you for the same reason my family fears my mother and my sister, Gion nodded. Because you are different.

He sighed. What I would give to change them ...

I wouldn't say feared.... my father was a very...

Daemon coughed.

Logcial man, he only believed what he could see, but you can't normally see spirits or threads or auras. He thought a first to put me in a mental insitution, some clients of his who just happened to live outside of our city suggested the school. He still can't deal though with the whole magic bit. My mother was fine with me... granted... she wasn't the brightest person ever... I think she was humouring me as a child when I said I could see things.

Gion shrugged.

It all comes down to the same thing, he replied. Because you are not like them, you are not accepted. It isn't a matter of logic, because if your world is so full of magic as you say then it would be logical that someone in the family might end up with some sort of power. I mean, logically, I'm as different from my people as you are from yours. I'm more than two feet below average height, and no matter what I can't make my voice work though it did at one time. I have very little magic to speak of - every elf has at least one defensive magical gift, but I have none. In many ways, I'm viewed as weak by my people, phsyically because of my size, intellectually because I can't speak, and emotionally because I can read other peoples' feelings and respond to them accordingly. For that I am viewed as soft and quite often looked down upon as a child, though I'm well old enough to have a family of my own.

Daemon couldn't really understand, elves were full of magic... couldn't he... learn?

You're smart though, couldn't you learn other forms of magic? As an elf it's in your blood already, true there is no gift, but....

But it wouldn't be hard, he would have an easier time than any human.

I like you being emotional, you're empathic, not in the gift sort of way, but in a person sort of way. People like you... can prevent wars, besides reading other people's emotions make you a good diplomat and every kingdom that deals with foriegn affairs needs that.
