A Shopping Date Gone Wrong

Growth Quest Part Two

"Alright, the food is ready, and I must admit, even my mouth is beginning to water. Oh wait, that's my presperation..."

Khun Ying seemed to be lost in her thoughts as she scribbled something down, erased it, scribbled something again, then erased it. Finally, she presented the pad to Sim, who just stared at it.

"What am I supposed to do with this?" he asked, brows knitted together while he wiped his hands dry on his clothes.

Fix grammer. she pointed.

The teen sighed as he scanned the words, wincing every now and then at the errors. As he continued to read and correct, he noticed Khun was humming a tune.

"That reminds me of one of the songs mother would sometimes sing..." Sim blinked. Once again he scanned the paper and realization hit him. "Oh no, don't tell me I'm going to have to sing..."

Khun nodded as she continued to hum.

"But I can't carry a tune!!!" the teen reasoned, but he realized that Khun Ying can't speak, let alone sing, he had no choice. "Fine. But tell anyone of this most humiliating spectacle and I shall ignore you for the remainder of our existance.

It was a threat the Simu would no doubt carry out. Finally, the food was being served, and after a great deal of nudging from Khun, the teen and the panda began their performance.

Decently sung by Sim
I sing for garlic and onions,
I celebrate the green bell pepper,
I toast to salt with potatoes,
When I have my eggs with butter.

And I'll rub on some basil, I'll sprinkle some flour,
And I'll add in some pepper, thyme and brown sugar,
This is what, this is what, I do to feel better.

I sing for nutmeg and pecans,
I glory in the scent of parsley,
Sprinkling cinnamon on the apples,
Just makes me feel so hungry.

And I'll grate some cheddar cheese, I'll mix in water,
And I'll add in some mushrooms, milk, and white sugar,
This is what, this is what, I do to feel better.

I sing for yeast and paprika,
I celebrate the vegetable oil
I toast to fresh cauliflower,
When I roast walnuts in olive oil.

And I'll rub on some basil, I'll sprinkle some flour,
And I'll add in some pepper, thyme and brown sugar,
And this is what, this is what, I do to feel better.

Khun Ying and Sim both hoped the Man found the food and the song good enough to let them go.

Sing With Me...

Since her growth, Khun has taken to listening to more and more songs. She had even gone so far as to ask Huni for the lyrics so she could sing to it correctly.

"Nag-aabang sa langit, sa mga ulap sumisilip~" she sang in her room, twirling on her toes in a dance. She liked the song, and she liked it even more once she managed to properly translate it. Her Tagalog wasn't as good as Huni's but she was doing rather well. The music continued to play on the stereo lying amidst discarded cd cases.

"Sis, can you please keep it down?" Sim requested, sticking his head in without so much as a knock.

"You don't hear me complaining when you decide to moan like a sick moose." Khun pouted, folding her arms across her chest. She was smaller than Sim, though she was older and she was glad that the Simu was addressing her properly.

"I do not moan like a sick moose!" He gasped, offended, "I moan like an ill gazelle. I have a much higher pitch than a moose does." he sniffs. "In any case, would it be alright for you to lower the volume, dear sister?"

"I suppose so, on one condition!" she grinned, though having a muzzle rather than a human face made it somewhat difficult to seem like she was grinning.

Sim did not like the sound of that. "What will this condition be?"

"You shall join me in a duet!" the panda declared brightly, giggling.

Sim looked horrified at the suggestion, "You cannot be serious..."

Plotting

Khun Ying sat at her desk, pen in one hand, the other resting on an empty plate of brownies. She tapped the pen idly on a pad of paper before scribbling down some things. She was making a list, it seems. A list for what?

Upon closer inspection, one would find the panda-child was writing a list of reasons as to why she should be given an MP3 player. In all honesty, she had just planned to ask if Huni would buy her one. It was only when she talked to her brother Sim about her plans that she decided to make a list.

"Why don't you ask for an I-Pod instead? I had heard those are quite fashionable, and all the rage. Or maybe because they're all the rage all the more you shouldn't buy one? Then again, there might be sales if they're truly so popular." He rambled.

Khun Ying shook her head, she didn't need an I-Pod. She didn't have that many songs after all. Besides, they only had one PC and Huni wasn't the sharing type.

"Aren't those really expensive?" She frowned, "And it wouldn't hurt to ask mom first."

"Trust me, mother should be bombarded with facts and information and reasons as to why she should buy that MP3 player of yours." Sim declared, flipping his orange-red hair.

The velveteen looked apprehensive, her brother loved to exaggerate a lot. And at the moment he was making their mother sound harsher than she really was. Still, it wouldn't hurt to have a back up plan in case her brother was right (it has happened before).

So here she was, writing down why her mother should buy her an MP3 player. Glancing at the clock, she saw it was nearly time for Huni to sit down on her bed and watch tv. This was the best time to ask her mother for anything; permissions, favors, requests, Huni was at her most agreeable when unwinding.

She quickly ripped off the page and headed over to Huni's bedroom.

"Mom?" She knocked, making sure her mother wasn't undressing or anything like that. Sure they were both female, but seeing one's parental figure in their underwear was not a sight Khun Ying ever wanted to see.

"Come on in." Came the reply.

Khun Ying took a deep breath before turning the knob and entering her mother's room, the piece of paper held tightly in her paw.

"You're just in time, "My name is Kam Sam Soon" is showing." the red-head smiled as she gestured for the panda to join her on the bed.

"Okay." The velvet nodded, nervously curling up beside Huni. A few minutes passed and while the velvet normally enjoyed watching this particular Koreanovela, she was a little preoccupied with waiting for the right moment to ask.

The first commercial break finally came, and it was a good thing that Huni was too cheap to go TiVo. Taking another deep breath, Khun Ying brought up the question "Can you buy me an MP3 player?"

And without batting an eye, Huni replied "Sure."

"R-really?" Khun Ying blinked.

"Yeah, I mean, I've been wanting to get one myself for a good while now, so why not? We'll look at the selections tomorrow."

Baby Sitting Blues
Growth Quest

Iris_virus
-Pulling on the last tidbits of clothing, Khun rushed to her door with a smile, the fine morning sun giving promise of what a wonderful day awaited her. So many fun games that could be played, things that could be done, but as her bedroom door swung open something far from familar stood before her.

"Ohhh! You're right on time!" -Coo'ed the mouse woman, hitching her coat on as she tried to usher Khun in, speaking before she could object.- "I was so suprised we were able to find a babysitter on such short notice! But I'm sure you'll do just fine. They're little angels."

Two little mouse children, not much younger then yourself peer from behind their father. Devious grin marring the face of one of them. The parents scuttle quickly outwards and before you know it you're alone. Just little Khun and the two kids.-

Baby Sitting Blues
It begins...

Khun Ying was nervous about baby sitting. Not that she hadn't had enough experience in the matter, she had watched over her siblings several times and she had no trouble with any of them, save for Quilt. But that was different. She reasoned as she nervously eyed the two youngsters.

Here goes nothing... "Hi, what are your names?" she smiled.

The older of the two, the one whose grin made Khun uncomfortable, responded "Tim. And this is Tam." Tam waved and hid behind her brother, wide pink eyes staring up at the panda girl.

"Nice to meet you both, I'm Khun Ying, but you can call me Khun. So, do you like cookies?"

Tam's ears perked at the mention of cookies but before she could open her mouth to speak Tim responded for them. "Yeah, they're okay I guess. But don't you have any popcorn?"

Khun canted her head, did they have popcorn? "I don't know, but I can see if we have some. What would you like to do while I go check?"

"I wanna play hide and go seek!" Tim exclaimed.

Khun Ying did not like the mischievous twinkle in the child's eye. "Sure, you and Tam hide while I count to twenty."

"Make it fifty! No! A hun'red!" Tim grinned as he darted off into the house, "And no peeking! C'mon Tam!"

The younger child looked at Khun Ying a little apologetically before she scurried off after her brother. The panda girl scratched her head and adjusted the cuffs of her pants as she counted out loud.

But as she reached thirty, she heard an ominous sound. It made Khun wince. It was the sound of something fragile, delicate and most definately breakable falling from its safe perch onto the hard, wooden floor.

"I didn't do it!" Tim's voice echoed throughout the house followed by a sharp squeak from Tam.

At once, Khun raced towards the direction Tim's voice came from. Up the stairs her feet carried her and turned at the corner. She found a broken vase, the water spilt, the flowers crushed beneath the upset table. "Oh no...." Khun whimpered, "Tim! Tam! Are either of you hurt?" she called out, worried that one of the children might have cut him or herself ont he broken shards of porcelain.

She heard sniffing sounds coming from the linen closet directly in front of the fallen piece of decorative knick-knack. Her paw rested on the doorknob for the slightest of seconds before she twisted it and opened the closet. Inside was Tam, her ears drooped in shame and guilt as her hands constantly wiped at the tears spilling down her cheeks.

"Tam, are you hurt?" Khun knelt in front of the child to inspect her for any wounds.

Tam shook her head, "I- he- we didn't mean to break the vase. I just wanted to sniff the flowers but Tim said we had to go so he started pulling me. When I pulled back he let go and I fell and hit the table and, and..." she promptly started to bawl.

The panda hugged the mouse child, stroking her hair and making soft, reassuring sounds. "It's alright, it's alright, as long as you're not hurt things are going to be alright."

"N-no, they're not. Tim always gets me into trouble and nobody believes me when I tell them I didn't mean it. Mom's going to punish me again and it's not fair!" she wailed.

Khun was taken aback by the sudden outburst. She had only spent a few minutes with the children but she didn't expect Tam to have been bottling something like that. It looked like the mouse girl wasn't going to calm down anytime soon, not unless Khun did something to help.

She started to hum, her thoughts focusing on calming and soothing the child. At first, Tam's sobbing overpowered Khun's melody, but slowly she started to relax. Her sobbing died down to sniffling and finally she stopped crying altogether.

After few more moments of singing, Khun was relieved to see Tam smile. "Feeling better?" she asked.

Tam nodded, "Uh huh."

"Why don't you go look for your brother while I clean up. Don't worry, I'll tell everyone I did it so they wouldn't get mad at you." Khun winked and gently pat the girl's head.

Baby Sitting Blues
Here we go...

Tim thought he was doing a splendid job of hiding from his babysitter. Too bad his sister had to go be stupid and clumsy and break the vase. So he had to find a different hiding place because Khun was obviously going to look in any nearby rooms now.

At first he wasn't sure where he'd go, he couldn't go back downstairs or else he'd run into Khun. Until the idea to hide on the roof struck him like a bright inspiration. He went up another flight of stairs, towards the attic. But it didn't seem like he could climb to the roof from any of the windows. So that plan had to go.

But the windows had thick ledges, thick enough for a small child to sit on. The roof was out but the ledges were perfect! He opened a window and climbed out.

She'll never find me here. he though as he slowly crawled away from the window.

"Tim? Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiim? Where are you?"

Tam? Did she get found? He tried to turn but ended up losing his footing. "Aaaaah!!!!" he yelled as he grabbed onto the ledge.

He looked over his shoulder. A mistake he was going to regret for he saw just how high up he was and how far his dangling legs were from the ground. "T-TAAAAAM! HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!" he yelled as he tried to pull himself up.

"Tim? TIM!" Tam gasped as she peered out the window, "KHUN! KHUN! COME QUICK IT'S TAM!"

The panda girl had just started to sweep away the shards when she heard the yell. Already she made a dash for the attic, and saw Tam staring out of the window. "Where's Tim?" she asked, hoping they were just playing a joke on her. Oh please, let Tim be alright.

"Kh-Khun? Help me. I'm scared." Tim squeaked.

"Calm down Tim." Khun instructed while trying to hide the trembling of her own voice.

"Hurry, I think he's slipping." Tam whimpered.

Khun undid the apron she was wearing and tightly tied it around a chair. The piece of furniture wouldn't fit through the window, it would have to do as the anchor for the time being. "Hold on Tim, I'm coming. Tam, keep an eye on the chair, I don't know if it can hold my weight and Tim's. So yell if it's starting to look weak."

Once Tam nodded her understanding, Khun climbed out the window, on paw holding the apron while the other clutched at the ledge. Tim had crawled out a good distance from the window, Khun would have to let go and hope she doesn't fall herself. If I can just get to Tim...

She crawled towards him and managed to grab hold of the child. Just in time as Tim felt himself losing his grip on the ledge. Khun slowly pulled Tim up, "Hold on, I've almost got you..."

When she tugged him back onto the ledge, Khun instructed him to grab the apron for support while he gets back in.

"I can't. I'm too scared." Tim gulped, eyes squeezed tight.

"There's nothing to be scared of, I'm here and Tam's waiting for you to help you."

"I can't move."

"Tim, c'mon." Tam called out, "Khun, try singing to him."

Khun wasn't sure if her song would work twice in one day but she had to try. She hummed again, her own eyes half-closing as she concentrated on courage and calm. Slowly, Tim began to move forward, inch by inch until Tam could grab him.

The two siblings held each other tightly once they were both inside. Khun breathed a sigh of relief and started back. She would have been rather pleased with how she handled the situation, if the window hadn't suddenly slammed shut against her nose.

Thankfully she hadn't learned many swear words and only groaned and huffed in pain as she rubbed her nose.

"S-sorry," Tim apologized sheepishly, "It slipped."

Khun sighed, "Let's just go downstairs. I'll make cookies while you two play a quiet game in the living room. I have some puzzles and books if you want."

"I wanted popcorn."

"Tim!" Tam frowned.

"Fine, fine, cookies then."

The rest of the afternoon was, thankfully, uneventful.
