I'm teaching myself. But I learn quickly, so hopefully I'll end up quite knowledgeable. Watakushi wa Seiyon. Ha ha ha. Actually, while most people who learn Japanese start with learning to speak/write in romaji, I've gone backwards: I'm focusing on reading first. So I know some kanji, and I'm in the process of memorizing hiragana and katakana. I started with katakana because the characters are less complicated, never mind if it's not used nearly as often as hiragana is.
One thing I want is to know how to WRITE all of them. None of my study resources tell me the stroke order and direction step by step. They all just say, "To keep this basic, we'll just teach you how to recognize them." But you learn the kana and kanji a lot better (plus, you'll know how to write them) if you've practiced writing them. The internet's not too much more helpful, either. The information's scattered, and that's annoying.

Well, [[mai]], at least you can understand other languages. I can understand Spanish if I listen hard, and I can understand my mom and relatives when they're speaking in either Tagalog or Hiligaynon by listening to their tone of voice, hand gestures, etc. Just by knowing the little cultural aspects of Filipino culture, I can understand the Filipino languages better than I can understand Spanish, even though I've studied Spanish for 2 years, whereas I have zero Tagalog schooling. It's strange, isn't it? razz

well, in order to speak a language that is not your mother tongue, you have to practice practice, practice... find a partner who can speak the language, and by all means talk in that language... i did that, and it works wonders... say, could you rate me in the arena as well?... http://www.gaiaonline.com/avatararena/?mode=vote&key=56rgz6&postid=5523 i love advertising, don't i?...

They haven't even taught us Kanji yet. Not bad. Actually, Real Translation: Hello for the first time. My name is Ramune Nice to meet you. My Japanese is not at all that good. I am in Second Year Japanese and I know a little Japanese. I like to speak Chinese, Spanish, English, and Japanese. Side note: 英語 : eigo (English) (Not Korean) I'd LOVE to learn Korean though. Another note to Animaznboy: You do get to learn perhaps alittle kanji in First Year Japanese. But near the end of the year. (Depends on your teacher) If not, look ahead in the book, it helps... XD (Note: I'm the Kanji Geek in Class.)
