You need to get over the whole Illegal Immigration stuff...

Why?

`Chloe Sullivan`
Not allof they're recycled superman jokes are bad. But I think they are running on a thin line, SMR really cut down some of their ability and free write for the show. They are really kind of constricted at this point to what subjects they can plant on....

I found a lot of the jokes pretty funny in earlier seasons, but the problem is lately they've been kind of lazy. They have about seventy years worth of history to make reference to, but their stock in-joke is having Clark say "I don't like costumes," or "I don't like heights," or "I don't like [X to do with Superman]". Whatever. I know it's supposed to be ironic, but it's not at all subtle and it's getting a bit tired.

Plus they've got like a season and a half left to show Clark's journey to becoming Superman. I think he needs to start getting over his intense hatred of everything to do with his future life; and they're gonna need something stronger than a barn door to get through his super-skull.

I've gotta give props to the actors for saving a lot of lines in the delivery, though. I feel like I'm being so negative.

EDIT: Yeah, and I understand that there are restrictions. I don't really know what to say about that.

Wait, I'm confused. You didn't like the episode because of the illgeal immigration propaganda?

It wasn't that it was 'propaganda', it was that it was really superficial; that was one of the reasons. It was also, I guess, the tired premise and the fact that it didn't really contribute anything to any of the the story arcs (which had a lot to do with the fact that it was moved) -- that would have been okay if it had been a real look at the issue, or if the journey had been fun, but it wasn't really either for me.

However, the ending was cool; I just wish it had been the ending of a more significant episode.

But whether or not Americans wish to realize it or not Slavery among illegal immigrants is actually common. Those people will do ANYTHING for a green card and place to stay as long as it is not where they came from. Beside the whole sci-fi part of it, the issue is still VERY real in the United States. Like i said the producers are kind of consricted to their ability to get through a whole season. They made a pact with Brian Singer when SMR arised so that they could keep the show running that SMallville was to stick to the superboy story of progressing into superman before he actually becomes superman...they are in a tight situation because Clark is really really close to his introductory stage of the Tights and Cape.

That's exactly why it shouldn't be a superficial look at the issue. If they were going to bring it up, they could at least do it justice. Instead it was just thrown in there almost as if they just wanted to look like they were making a meaningful commentary, which they weren't.

Well, they've always had the "no flight, no tights" rule, but they don't even seem really to be progressing him at all. They can progress him, but they don't; they just keep having him make comments about hating costumes.

Yeah but really how much farther can they progress him? I mean he has been having his inspirations to become this great icon all season yet if they take another step they are going to be stepping fairly close to the line they promised NOT to cross.

Well they could have him stop killing people, for starters. What perplexes me is that they keep making reference to him being a very moral character, but the things they write him doing don't always correspond to that. For example, for a while I thought the whole "secrets and lies" thing with Lana was going to take him to a place where he'd decide to be a lot more honest in future, but it doesn't seem like they're really planning to take it anywhere at all.

And they could show him warming up to the idea of wearing a costume (without actually putting one on), or helping people overtly, or signing up to journalism courses, or even acting classes. neutral

EDIT: lol. I meant acting classes as in Clark signs up for acting classes so we know he has the technique to switch from one identity to the other later on. I just reread that and realised it sounded like I was insulting Welling.

NOt Clark killing people, killing people off like Jonathon or Raya or Jose. I beleive she is trying to say.

The only thing fetu is that they have made references to his journalism on more then one occasion such as in Commencement when he says "I was actually thinking about going into journalism. Don't tell Chloe but i think it's growing on me"

Why did she say "him" then. I don't think that's really what she ment.

Actually, I think killing people off makes a show like this more realistic and suspensful..

I don't think so. I mean sure if its a side or low key character but when they go off killing character like Jonathon i think that can do some harm to the show's story progression.

Without Jonathon the whole story of superman and how he came to be is pretty much gone. Jonathon was the one who talked him into BECOMING superman, Jonathon was the one who GAVE Clark his costume, and Jonathon was the one who BROUGHT superman back from the deadafter he was killed by doomsday. Jonathon played a bigger role in Clark's becoming of superman then Lana or any other character could have done.
