Seto sow that the griffans had run out of stamine. "Well you to would make a good fighting pair." He said from seeing the fight Ming had the brains while Trill had the muscle. He walked over and scratched them behind there ears affectiontly.

She was already asleep on her part of the bed. Trying to lift the other griffan took all her strength. She would have to think to beat him next time she thought as she rolled on her stomic to be scratched by her rider.

Instinctively, Trill shied away from Seto's hand. A part of his mind told him that it was bad form for a griffin to allow himself to be touched by another human without his human's consent. Silence was absent, and therefore unable to grant permission.

Looking very like a cat, he climbed fluidly to his feet and slunk out the door which Patience had just opened, in search of Silence.
_____

Patience came into Seto's room dragging a young boy of about ten. The boy was covered with filth and blood. Both his eyes were blacked and he had four scratches dividing his forehead. One wrist was already splinted. Another child - an even younger girl of maybe eight - followed sulkily. She sported a split lip and a nasty bit of gravel burn along the left side of her face, as though she had skidded across the ground on it. Her palms were likewise torn up. She, too, was covered in dirt.

"Excuse the intrusion, Seto. These two...children were fighting over who would have the right to care for your griffin, or so the story goes. Perhaps you wouldn't mind enlightening them, and explaining that the care of a griffin only goes to one who is mature enough to handle the responsibility of doing so?"

He looked at the end of his tether, so to speak. The two children immediately ceased their sullen glaring when their eyes rested on Ming-Ming. Their attention didn't leave the griffin throughout Patience's speech.

"Oh! He's yours," the girl said.

"We thought he was feral, like H'raik," the older child said.

They both stared in awe at Ming-Ming.

Getting off the floor and up onto his feet he said. "Yes she is mine, no she is not a feral." He had really no idea what Patience was trying to tell him but he just winged it until Patience gave him more of a hint.

He looked at the now confussed griffon who was laying on his bed. "Yes, the griffon would grow up to be...less of..." He then made a chirping noise to Ming to make her get there attection off of him trying to do a bad speech.

He then made a quick glace at Patience trying to say he need help.

Ming tiltled her head then came off of her bed and down to his feet were she sat and watched the kids with un intersted eyes.

Patience caught Seto's glance and came to his rescue.

"What Seto means is that he was entrusted with a griffin egg because he is mature enough to care for her. You two can't even tell a male from a female."

He shot an apologetic look over their heads in Seto's direction and shrugged helplessly. They were his sister's children. His sister had gone with Fortitude, leaving him with her brats. He and his niece and nephew had never gotten along well, but familial duty would not allow him to foist the kids off on someone else. Mostly they got by because he ignored their presence and they stayed out of his. He had important work to do in the infirmary, and they'd never shown any interest in work of any sort.

It was only when Silence had been given Trill's egg that the two had taken any interest in the Eyrie at all, declaiming Valour's choice, and pronouncing it unfair, as she was much too old to be in receipt of an egg. Patience had, from the outset, told them that they were out of line, but they had gone for years lacking discipline, and so this one anomaly in their guardian's behavior didn't register.

They sincerely resented that Silence had Trill, and had harboured hopes that one of them would be given care of what they had believed to be a feral griffin chick, that they might do as Valour had with H'raik and tame it. They had been fighting in earnest, despite their relationship, for that honor. Both of them idolized Valour, who, as far as anyone could tell, was unaware of their existence.

_____

Silence's name was not yet on the work roster, and so she was at loose ends. She could return to the infirmary and spend time with Seto, but she got the impression that he had spent too much time with people not his own age anyway, and that prolonged exposure to her wouldn't be the best thing for his mental health.

It occurred to her that, if she could find Patience's wards and their gang, she might be able to find companions to amuse Seto, but the two children were nowhere to be found. Their gang said only that Patience had taken them somewhere.

The younglings of the Eyrie viewed Patience with mixed feelings, by and large. He was able to cure the small ills and injuries which they constantly acquired in record time, but he had little tolerance for fools or young people, and so his bedside manner left much to be desired. He took no interest in either of his wards, who constantly complained about him to their friends, and so he was, mostly, avoided by anyone under the age of twelve, which suited him just fine.

Seto then caught on. "Yes, you need to know the diffrences between male and females, chicks from all the other stages of there life. When you learn that then you are ready for a chick." He said to them as he looked down at Ming. "So Ming-Ming was given to me for I know this stuff." He barly knew anything himself about griffons.

The boy looked at him then said. "But you are to old to have a griffan. What makes you so sure you deserve her." He said as he stuck his tongue out at him.

She chimmed up. "Why not someone younger how will grow up with the griffan instead of someone how can get sick easly."She said as she stuck out her tounge.

Seto was doing his best to hold his temeper. If Ming had been bigger he would of made her attack them. "You do have a point." He said through clenched teeth.
PostPosted: Fri Dec 29, 2006 4:34 am

Patience scowled at his charges, his clear eyes for once not the embodiment of neutrality. He sighed.

"They do not have a point, Seto. At the Eyrie, we only have griffins 'print on the young because young people are supposed to be easier to train and the hatchlings are better able to relate to them, in theory. It used to be that riders were all chosen from young men and women in their later teens."

At his point, he addressed his niece and nephew.

"And griffins 'print on whom they will. There are documented cases of griffins totally ignore the candidates selected for them to possibly 'print on, in favor of someone else in the room."

Both of the points he mentioned had not been the case for many years. Certainly, neither had occurred within his lifetime, except that Trill 'printed on Silence, who was an older teenager, and she was the exception, not the rule. Still, it had been over a century since the Eyrie had started hving chicks 'print on younglings.

As for the documented cases, there were exactly four, and in all of them, the chick had 'printed on someone who had spent more time with their egg than the assembled candidates, which supported the theory that came up every twenty years or so that griffins were empathic. The theory had been disproved time and time again, but people still brought it up whenever the stories of odd 'printings were told.

"Why don't the two of you stop making asses of yourselves and introduce yourselves, as if you were civilised creatures?" Patience suggested, relenting a little.

Those kids are going to need names at some point in the very near future. I'm leaving it to you.

He let it all go without saying a word. "Yes plese." He said so he knew if they would become riders then he knew to just put in the demand to not ride with the.

The boy chimed up first. "Kindo." He said.

The girl then took up after him. "Wonder." He was not surprised at there names sience the other's names were regular and also diffrent.

I'm just gonna skip forward, since the griffs have grown. Fill in as you want.
Silence had fallen into a routine of doing her newly-assigned chores, caring for Trill, and visiting Seto, who had been removed from the infirmary upon his recovery and given a bunk in the dorms used by Cracked Eggs, as riders-in-training were often called by others in the Eyrie. Silence, had not been required to relocate, considering that the only other Cracked Egg was a twelve year old boy, and it would not be the wisest thing to have them rooming together, even in a dormitory, since they'd undoubtedly have different friends.

Trill, like Ming-Ming, had grown larger, as young griffins are wont to do, and with his increased size, he also gained a degree of recklessness which made Silence worry constantly. He climbed trees, went rock-hopping, and, most worrisome of all, made himself a nuisance to older griffins. Most were tolerant. Others...not so much.

She sat in her room grooming him and remarking over his newest scrapes when Valour came in.

"What?" she asked. "Knocking is good."

"Cracked Eggs don't get that sort of courtesy," he replied with a mocking grin. "Up! You have lessons. You and Seto. I'm on my way to fetch him, now."

"But we don't know how long he's staying - "

"He's here now, and it's our duty to train him for as long as he chooses to remain and as long as he's with Ming-Ming. Now, get up! Meet me in the sawdust arena."

Silence groaned. That meant weapons training, a thing she'd been neglecting of late.
_____

Valour went to Seto's dormitory, which he shared with exactly no one, and informed him of the same thing, but he offered to show the young man to the sawdust arena, rather than expecting him to find it on his own. He was unsure if Seto knew where it was.

Seto stood at attention, he said to silence one night he owed Valour for his life and he was going to repay him for it. He then thought about the area.

He was starting to learn more and more about the area even though he barly knew it. "I would like it if you toke me." He admited.

He looked down toward his cautios griffan. She was staying around Trill instead of older gryphon, since her incounter with Hi'rak, she stayed away from him. If Trill did things like climb trees she would head back to Seto knowing she would get in trouble.

"There's no problem. Oh, and take your katana. Our weapons master will want to see what you can do with the thing, since you carry it so confidently."

He waited another moment for Seto to fasten on his katana, and then set off for the sawdust arena, where Speed, the weapons master, waited, taking care not to lose Seto with his long-legged strides.

They arrived shortly.

_____

Silence had been unable to convince Trill not to follow her. She had tried in earnest, knowing that the activities in which she would now be involved would distress the griffin, who was always quick to defend her whenever he perceived a threat to her person or whenever she seemed gloomy, and had wanted to spare his nerves, but he had refused to listen. And so the griffin, who was now acquiring spots, followed her to the sawdust arena, where Valour and Seto were already waiting. Fortunately, it seemed Speed had not yet arrived.

You're more than welcome to play Speed if you want, but if not, it makes no nevermind to me. Do you want me to put up profiles of Kindo and Wonder, or no?

Seto stood thinking at Valour's words. Confident, last time I cut my self trying to get it out of the holder. He unhapply said as he moved it in and out a little to make sure it wouldn't stick. When Seto looked up to see Trill he then wonder were Ming had gone. She usally would of made it known by her unhappy squeaks of him leaving her to the older griffans. He just shook it oof and got ready to train with his poor sword skills.

Sure I'll play Speed. Can you plese do the profiles for them.

Silence looked around. There were other people taking advantage of the open arena to practice their drills. All of them were older than Silence, approximately twenty two would have been the average age. She saw that there were few griffins there, as the weaponry tended to make griffins act out, which was a thing to be avoided if at all possible. Once more she glanced at Trill and wished that he had stayed behind. She didn't want him getting hurt.

On the bright side, she was relatively proficient with most weapons, though not from griffinback, which she would have to wait to learn, since Trill was too young to ride, and would remain so for some time, despite his seeming ambition to grow enormous as quickly as possible. She wondered if H'raik had grown at a similar rate as a young griffin. He had not been young when he was caught, after all, and so no one knew.

She had brought with her no weapons. She knew that there were spares around which she could make use of, and to which she was less attached. She tried to avoid having to fight with her own weapons, because they were part of the legacy her parents had left her and they were not at all suited to her. Her father's weapons were too long and too heavy, her mother's too short and light. Usually she used her father's, if she had to use the inherited weapons, to build strength, but she hated it, and it was a struggle.

She waited for Speed to arrive. He was not known for his punctuality.

Valour departed.

"Good luck," he said as he brushed past her to leave via the doors through which she had entered, different from the ones through which he and Seto had come.

I'm getting to it.

Seto watched Valour, "Great, we are supposed to fight each other..." He said with a sigh as he streched. "Just watch were you swing, I got a crick in my neck." He said as he took out his sword and sharpend it with a stone he found on a table.

He held up the blade to admire it. "Uhh..." He looked over at Trill and his talons. "Mind making sure he dosn't try to gauge out my eyes." He said calmly as he went back to his sharping.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Speed showed up finaly. "Sorry I had a trio fight, I let them have some first hits." He streched as he went on.
"So lets see...if you brought a griffan I think you are in the wrong place." He said then looking at Seto. "Hey kid best leave before you get hurt." He rudly said as he looked at Silence thinking the griffan was Seto.
"Aww the flight leaders girl, the one how got that single egg." He said looking at her. "Think you can handle this kind of work." He said looking her over.
Seto sighed as he stood up. "I am a rider" He said
Speed shot him a look then said. "Fine, lets see you two how is stronger." He said as he showed Silence the weapon rack.
Silence bit her tongue. She had forgotten how abrasive Speed's personality was. She hadn't had to deal with him in ages. Though she knew it would have bad results for her, she had noticed the expression on Seto's face when Valour mentioned using the katana. She was well-trained, and she refused to fight against a twelve year old. Unless he was some sort of prodigy, the size and weight difference between them would be decisive even if neither could use a weapon.
She picked a weapon at random from the weapon's rack, knowing that it made little difference whether it was perfectly suited to her or not, and would, in fact, probably help her in the long run to use something which was off. Weapon in hand, she turned to Speed.
"Are you out of your mind, Speed? I can't fight him. You know how I've been trained." In an undertone she added, "He could get seriously hurt. I'm not accustomed to fighting twelve year olds."
"Another point you ought to know, Speed: I'm not the flight leader's girl. That would be Sage, or have you gone utterly daft?" she added in her normal tone.
So saying, she sheathed the saber she'd chosen with an angry, resounding clang. Trill hissed at Speed, but Silence shot him a withering glare and he remained in his place.
Seto didn't know weather to be offended or be glad, instead he turned his glance away from them. He knew that he could only stab, and the weapon she already had would just knock his out of his grip. "I..." He said shackly then gripping the courage along with his fists. "I want to fight you Silence." He said calmly.
"I don't want to be treated around her like a kid. I took care of myself for almost 6 years." He said showing he would fight even if she didn't want to. "Stop treating me like am your child...I can handle myself." he said as he took out his blade.
It usally felt heavy to him but since he wanted to prove himself to her and Speed it felt lighter. He let the tip touch the ground so he could grab the handle qucikly when the fight starts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Like I havn't noticed." He said to her having seen Sage with Valour many times when he came to train.

When he heard what Seto said he had to look surprised, he already knew that the kid would do that trying to stand up to her. It was often seen in kids his age but for some reason this one was diffrent. "So Silence, it is now a challenge. Will you dishonoer him with saying no, or will you honer his reckless behavior with a fight, if you do I want it to be till he gives up."

Speed was big on honer and he would of said yes anyway, he would be able to see what Silence would be like, but now he worried about the griffan that growled at him, it might try to breck up the fight. If he had Seto's griffan it might of been diffrent.
