#58 Growlithe User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Growlithe's name is derived from the words growl, because it growls at its enemies, and lithe, which refers to its readily bent posture before it attacks them. Its name in the beta version was Flamie.

Poke'dex Entry: It basically looks a little like the shisa and an orange puppy with black tiger-like markings along its back and rear legs. On its front legs it has a pair of black "V"-shaped markings. It also has cream-colored fur on its tail, chest/muzzle, and head.

#59 Arcanine User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Because Arcanine is considered a legendary beast (albeit with a small "l"), and is a cross of a few mythical, magical beings (most notably the dragon and the Chinese fu dog), its name is most likely a portmanteau of the words "arcane" (in the sense of "mystical") and "canine." In the beta English translation, Arcanine was originally going to be called Blaze.

Poke'dex Entry: Arcanine is a canine pokémon that resembles the shisa but is orange, with black zig-zagging stripes and muscular chest resembling a tiger, also including large, bushy hair and a mane similar to that of a lion. In other words, Arcanine is a cross between a dog and a liger.

In the Pokémon world, Arcanine is one of the most admirable Pokémon. Many things contribute to this favorable impression: despite its imposing size, Arcanine is very agile and graceful. It can run as much as 6,200 miles (almost 10,000 kilometres) within 24 hours, all the while looking almost as if it is flying. As is the case with most Fire-type Pokémon, the fire burning within its body gives it strength. Its mane is said to be an object of exquisite beauty, and even its bark is described as "majestic" and "awe-inspiring".

Arcanine has been revered in this way from the ancient times and particularly in China, whose real-life ancient culture features divine entities resembling Arcanine in some respects. An ancient picture scroll reveals that Arcanine's passage through prairies attracted people to its movement.

Arcanine's species is classified as "Legendary" in the Pokédex, although the word is probably used in an entirely different context than with the actual Legendary Pokémon. It is theorized, however, that Arcanine was one of the original three Legendary Pokémon, the other two being Zapdos and Articuno. It is thought the game designers decided to make all three legendary pokémon "birds" and so they replaced Arcanines status as the legendary fire Pokémon with Moltres. They did, however, give it the label of "Legendary Pokémon".

#60 Poliwag User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts:The name Poliwag is a portmanteau of polliwog and wag, which means to move a body part (in Poliwag's case, the tail) rapidly from side to side. The Japanese version of the name is probably onomatopoeic: "Nyoro nyoro" describes "wiggling" or "squirming" or "slithering", which is how a tadpole or a "Poliwag" would move.

According to the Pokémon Special (#3) for the Official Nintendo Magazine, Poliwag was the first Pokémon to be designed by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori. It is Tajiri's favorite Pokémon. He likes how the swirls on its stomach "are where its intestines should be".

Poke'dex Entry: Poliwag are very young in their life cycle, with newly-grown legs that are still tender and weak. Poliwag's tail, however, is quite strong, allowing it to swim at great speeds without fatigue and slapping enemies silly. Hence, it prefers swimming through ponds and rivers than walking.

The belly of Poliwag is characterized by a large, hypnotic swirl-shape. The swirl is actually Poliwag's internal organs, visible through its soft, thin and translucent skin. The direction of this swirl differs from area to area. The equator is thought to have an effect on the direction of the swirl. Poliwag's swirl can be used for Hypnosis.

Poliwag's thin skin is very rubbery, and works as protection from danger. Even sharp objects will bounce right off.

#61 Poliwhirl User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Poliwhirl is a portmanteau of polliwog and whirl. Whirl refers to the spiral on its stomach, while Poli is also the "family" name for this evolution chain. The Japanese version of the name is probably onomatopoeic: "Nyoro nyoro" describes "wiggling" or "squirming" or "slithering", which is how a tadpole or a "Poliwag", its most basic form, would move.

A water type Pokémon, Poliwag evolves into Poliwhirl at Level 25, which is also a tadpole Pokémon. Misty owns one in the animé, and battles often with her Poliwhirl, who later evolves into Politoed. It evolves into Poliwrath by the use of a Water Stone, and into Politoed when traded with the King's Rock attached.

Poke'dex Entry: Poliwhirl is a large, amphibious froglet-like Pokémon. It is capable of living in or out of water; in order to live out of water, it must sweat to keep its body slimy. It prefers to live underwater in ponds where there is less danger.

In battle, it uses the spiral-shape on its belly to put the foe to sleep. It does this by subtly undulating the spiral, causing drowsiness and eventually sleep. It is also capably of easily escaping the grasp of foes due to its greasy skin.

Poliwhirl's spiral goes in the opposite direction of Poliwag's.

Poliwhirl's mouth is no longer visible after evolution, but it is concluded that it moved to the center of its spiral, since it now sprays water from there.

#62 Poliwrath User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Poliwrath's name is composed of poli, which is derived from polliwog, and wrath, meaning "anger" due to its Fighting-type and ferocious attitude. The Japanese version of the name is probably onomatopoeic: "Nyoro nyoro" describes "wiggling" or "squirming" or "slithering", which is how a tadpole or a "Poliwag", its most basic form, would move.

Poke'dex Entry:Poliwrath is a moderately large creature with relatively rudimentary legs compared to imposing arms, the lack of a mouth, and a spiral pattern on its stomach. In this respect it resembles its pre-evolution Poliwhirl closely, save for a pair of white eyes, thicker arms and a slightly differently-shaped “head area”. Though it is classified as a Tadpole Pokémon strictly because of the anatomy of its earliest evolutionary form Poliwag, Poliwrath resembles anything but, instead giving more of the impression that it is like a boxer. Poliwrath is only humbled in its pack by Politoed, the leader of Poli packs.

Poliwrath is a master swimmer in every respect thanks to its highly developed body and arm muscles that never fatigue however much it exercises. It is adept at the swimming practices of the front crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, and more. Thanks to its incredible stamina, Poliwrath is said to be physically able to swim the entire diameter of Earth’s Pacific Ocean without obvious effort, and its swimming efficiency allows it to easily overtake the best human swimmers in any controlled competition.

#63 Abra User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: The name Abra comes from the well-known term used in magic, "Abracadabra." Its Japanese name, Casey, is a reference to mentalist and "sleeping prophet" Edgar Cayce. Its name in the English beta version of the games was "Hocus".

Poke'dex Entry: Abra is vaguely fox-like in appearance. It has two legs and two arms, but is always depicted in a sitting position, and sleeping. Its colouration is gold and brown, and it has a long tail. The brown upper torso seems to be armored, also it appears to wear two pauldrons.

Abra's lifestyle is reminiscient of the koala's, sleeping eighteen hours a day to conserve its psychic abilities and only awakening to feed. Its eyes are almost always closed, and it opens them only to launch one of its psychic attacks.

Using its psychic powers, it can teleport away from danger – and even conduct a battle – while sleeping. If it teleports multiple times over short distances in rapid succession, it can create an illusion that there is more than one of itself. Abras also teleport once an hour whilst sleeping.

Abras are supposedly good allies, and are useful in the Pokémon world thanks to their amazing and unique ability to teleport themselves and any object they desire to another place.

#64 Kadabra User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Kadabra's name is derived from the magician's parlance term, abracadabra. The Japanese name Yungerer is a reference to psychic Uri Geller, doubly so because of the spoon it always holds. The reference is so direct that Geller himself sued, albeit unsuccessfully, for use of his likeness. Its name in the English beta versions of the games was "Pocus".

Poke'dex Entry: Kadabra is a strong psychic pokémon that owes much of its power to the alpha waves it emits from its body at all times. These alpha waves are affected by Kadabra's current mental state - if it has a headache, the waves change. The psychic power it gives off can also trigger off headaches to nearby humans. It is also said to grow more powerful when faced with a difficult opponent. The silver spoon that Kadabra holds amplifies the waves' power - if it does not hold a spoon, it is said to be limited to half the usual amount of its telekinetic powers. It has been claimed (in a Pokédex entry) that one morning, a boy with extrasensory powers woke up to find that he had become a Kadabra, and although this has not been verified (it could possibly be an urban legend in the Pokémon world due the way it is told in the Pokédex), it is possible it could happened given the events in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon where a human is turned into a Pokémon (though it is not a Kadabra).

Kadabra is vaguely fox-like in appearance. It stands on two legs and always holds a silver spoon - this is a reference to alleged psychic Uri Geller, who claims to be able bend spoons with the power of his mind, although this claim has never been substantiated. Kadabra's coloring is gold and brown. It has wavy-lined patterns on its abdomen, and a pink star on its forehead, similar to patterns found on cards developed Karl Zenner, a psychic researcher, which were used to measure the psychic abilities of an individual. It wears a long, thin moustache, and has a thick tail. This mustache is smaller in the female than in the male.

#65 Alakazam User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Alakazam's name is a common word in magicians' parlance. In fact, the whole evolutionary line is a pun on the phrase "Abracadabra Alakazam!" (Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam make up this evolutionary family.) Alakazam's Japanese name, Foodin, is a reference to either the French magician Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin or his namesake, Harry Houdini.

Poke'dex Entry: Alakazam is vaguely fox-like in appearance, although it loses the thick tail it once possessed as Kadabra (which might explain why it is 19 pounds lighter than Kadabra). It stands on two legs and always holds two silver spoons - this can be taken as a reference to psychic Uri Geller, who can allegedly bend spoons with the power of his mind. (For the controversy involving Geller and Pokémon, see Kadabra.) As seen in Pokémon: The Movie, these spoons bend due to an extremely powerful psychic attack from the antagonist, Mewtwo. Parts of Alakazam's body are brown, but its predominant colouring is gold. Alakazam wears a long gold moustache - nonetheless, some Alakazam are female, though in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, females have dramatically smaller moustaches, while the males have longer ones.

Alakazam's brain is the most powerful of any Pokémon, with an IQ said to be in excess of 5,000. It can outperform a supercomputer and memorize anything that it sees. It is able to calculate a great deal of information in order to gain the advantage over its opponent. (Compare with Metagross.) However, its large brain is too heavy to be held up by its neck and shoulders, so Alakazam must use its psychic powers to keep its head aloft. In fact, its muscles are far underdeveloped, so Alakazam uses its psychic powers to move parts of its body. This makes Alakazam's frail body its weakness, but often it does not need to worry because its mental powers can thoroughly defeat most Pokémon before they can attack.

When it closes its eyes, all of its other senses are heightened dramatically, which is its cue for attack, as seen when using Calm Mind, one of its attacks.

Alakazam possesses the largest intelligence among all the common Pokémon (that are not legendaries). It holds two metal spoons that increase its psychic powers, a reference to the spoon bending phenomenon.

#66 Machop User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Machop's name is a portmanteau of the words macho and karate chop. The Japanese name Wanriky is a pun on the Japanese word referring to strength of the arms (腕力, wanryoku?, but can technically be read wanriki). In beta English versions of Red and Blue, it was known as Kara-Tee, derived from the martial art, karate.

Poke'dex Entry: Machop is a fighting pokémon, which means it enhances its abilities with martial arts. It trains with other Machop and with Pokémon of other species, especially Geodude and Graveler, to become stronger, and many Machop have undertaken a quest to become a master of a particular martial art.

Machop's body is made entirely of muscles, which are specially adapted for constant use with improved facilities to move lactic acid out of them. Machop are also highly intelligent, which is an added advantage in battle.

It can be said that Machop and Makuhita are opposites. Whereas Machop is muscular, light, and fights with martial arts, Makuhita is plump, heavy, and uses sumo wrestling.

A shiny Machop is brown instead of the normal blue-green.

#67 Machoke User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Its name is a portmanteau of the words macho and choke (as in choke hold or choke slam, two wrestling techniques). The Japanese name Goriky is a pun on the Japanese word for herculean strength (強力, gōriki?).

Poke'dex Entry: Machoke is vaguely humanoid in appearance. It has a gray-skinned body which is bulging with muscles. Each of its arms has six red markings across it, which may be its blood vessels pushed out by its muscles, while having three crests on its head. It is always wearing a speedo-like garment that goes up to its chest and is seen wearing a special belt with the letter "P" on it. This "P" probably stands for "Power Save" according to clues from Pokédex entries.

Machoke is best known for its well-muscled physique and prodigious physical power. Machoke, along with Machop and Machamp, can be said to be the bodybuilders of the Pokémon world.

A Machoke's muscles are said to be as hard as steel, and they become thicker still with each battle it fights. They never get sore or tired, even though a Machoke habitually battles at its full power. Its strength is such that it can easily lift a sumo fighter with one finger. Outside battle, Machoke trains its body by helping humans in demanding physical labor. Even in its days off, Machoke heads to the countryside and continues its training there.

Since it possesses such extraordinary power, a Machoke has to wear a special belt around its waist (called a "Power Save Belt" by the Pokédex) to restrain and control its strength. It is unknown where the belt is obtained, when or how it is fitted and exactly what would happen if it were to be removed. It is implied that the Machoke's power would get out of control, posing a danger to others or even to Machoke itself, making its motions impossible to regulate. However, it is a very conceited pokemon. It may be too busy looking in a mirror to fight. Rather than its fighting skills, it also finds a bond to its trainers, often protecting them from harmful situations, much like Gardevoir.

#68 Machamp User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Machamp's name is a portmanteau of macho, meaning tough, and champ. The Japanese name Kairiky is a pun on the Japanese word for superhuman strength (怪力, kairiki?). Its name was originally "Kong-Fuu" in beta English versions of Red and Blue, which is a reference to Kung fu.

Poke'dex Entry: Machamp's appearance is greatly similar to that of its pre-evolved form of Machoke, with a few of differences: first, Machamp's lips become highly prominent and tan-coloured, making its face appear rather fish or frog-like; it also has only two toes rather than five; the crest on its head grows slightly; and, lastly and most importantly, Machamp has an extra pair of arms. Machamp has large muscles, most notably in its pectoral and biceps regions. Machamp continues sporting the power save belt that it used to wear as a Machoke (see the latter's article for more information). Machamp also resembles notable four-armed dragon Goro of Mortal Kombat fame and Justice (gaming boss character) from House of the Dead series. Despite looking very masculine, Machamp can also be female.

Machamp is an extremely dangerous Pokémon to face in battle. A multitude of reasons contribute to this, its great strength being only one of them.

The training Machamp has done ever since it was a Machop has paid off in this stage of its life, as Machamp is a master of all existing martial arts. It is also given an excellent chance to practice them all at once on its opponents, thanks to its four arms.

Machamp's arms react instinctively, moving faster than its brain can direct them. They can land 500 hits per second, assaulting a foe from multiple angles and in multiple ways, rendering all defenses practically useless. On the other hand, they do not have very high dexterity and it is difficult for Machamp to use them in any task requiring delicate precision and fine motor skills.

One of Machamp's favorite battle strategies is to immobilize the opponent with its four arms and then unleash a simultaneous combination of an uppercut, a hook, a straight punch and a karate chop. The resulting impact is enough to send the hapless recipient of the attack clear over the horizon and sometimes even to the moon.

#69 Bellsprout User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Bellsprout's name is derived from the words "bell", referring to its bell-shaped head, and "sprout", which is a young plant growth. "Bluebell" may be another influence on its name. It may be of interest to know that "tsubomi" means "flower bud", hence, its Japanese name: "madatsubomi".

Poke'dex Entry: Bellsprout is a carnivorous, plant-like Pokémon, hunting small insects with blinding agility despite its skinny body. It tends to ensnare its prey in its vines and devour it, in much the same way as real carnivorous plants do. Bellsprout's preferred habitat is warm and humid climates, since it can absorb more moisture from the ground when planting its root-like feet inside it.

In battle, Bellsprout can take advantage of its flexibility to bend and sway its way out of the range of its opponent's attacks, no matter how powerful they may be. However, it will be helpless to escape if it decides to plant its roots in search of water. In terms of offense, Bellsprout can spit out of its mouth a highly corrosive fluid that can melt even iron.

Because its bud looks like a human face, Bellsprout is considered in the Pokémon world to be a type of the legendary mandrake plant, although in real world lore the human-like part of a mandrake is actually its roots.

#70 Weepinbell User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Its name originates from "bell" (referring to its pre-evolved form, Bellsprout), and "weeping", a word that is often used in nomenclature of plants that bend over, such as Weeping Willow. It may be of interest to know that its Japanese name "utsudon" is likely inspired by the word "utsubokazura", the Japanese word for the pitcher plant.

Poke'dex Entry: Weepinbell immobilizes its enemies by using Poisonpowder and Acid. It will swallow anything that moves and digest it within its stomach, and produces a neutralizing fluid to keep from being affected by its own strong stomach acids. If its prey is larger than it, it will first use sharp leaves to slice it up before eating. Weepinbell uses the large hook on its rear end to hang on to tree branches and vines.

Weepinbell looks a lot like a Bellsprout, but without the vines and leaves. Instead, it likes to hop along.

#71 Victreebel User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: The name Victreebel may be a combination of "victory" and "bell." The "bell" refers to the shape of the Pokemon's head, similarly to its pre-evolved forms Bellsprout and Weepinbell. It is also worth noting that it contains the word "tree" within it, as Victreebel is a grass-type Pokémon. It may also be derived from "big tree bell". If its name does come from "victory bell," the name may be a reference to the Liberty Bell. It may be of interest to know that its Japanese name "Utsubot" is probably inspired by the word "utsubokazura", the Japanese word for the pitcher plant. It is speculated that the full spelling should be "Victreebell" in keeping with the names of its pre-evolved forms. However, the limit of letters to a Pokémon species' name is 10, as dictated by the code to any Pokémon game, so one "l" was discarded (compare with Feraligatr).

Poke'dex Entry: Victreebel looks like an elongated Weepinbell; however, its mouth is now at the top of its body as opposed to the bottom. Its mouth now has two small fangs, and a leaf covering it so that it can open and shut. Its leaf, as mentioned above, grows from this vine. The design that Victreebel is based on is very similar to the carnivorous Nepenthes pitcher plants.

Victreebel is said to live in huge colonies deep in the jungle, although nobody has ever returned from these places to confirm. It lulls its prey with a sweet, honey-like scent, and also the vine on its head (which waves as if it was an animal) before digesting it with powerful stomach acids that can even dissolve bone. Normally, its prey are bugs, but it has been known to attack and consume small animals.

#72 Tentacool User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Interesting Facts: Tentacool's name is a variation on the word "tentacle". The "-cool" suffix may refer to its being of the Water-type, and the fact it prefers water of that particular temperature. In addition, "cool" is colloquially used in the English language as a synonym for "debonair", "fashionable" or "stylish". In the English beta version, Tentacool was originally going to be called Jilly. The "kurage" of the Japanese "Menokurage" is the Japanese word for jellyfish (水母 kurage). This Pokémon evolves at level 30 to Tentacruel.

Poke'dex Entry: Tentacool's appearance is based on the jellyfish. It has a light blue, bell-shaped gelatinous body, with two eyes and a pair of brown tentacles. It has a small red gem-like structure in the place where its forehead would be and two larger such "gems" on its sides.

Tentacool is an aquatic Pokémon, drifting aimlessly wherever the ocean waves and currents take it. It usually ends up in shallow waters, where it may be accidentally caught in the fishing lines of anglers. A more unfortunate development for the Tentacool is to end up on the shoreline and get stuck on the beach when low tide comes. Tentacool's body is largely composed of water, so if it is kept out of the sea for too long it will shrivel up and risk death from dehydration unless it is reintroduced to water in time.

Tentacool has two main weapons. The first is its toxic feelers, located at the tips of its tentacles. It uses them to stab anything it touches with stinging acid. Coupled with its excellent camouflage in the water, Tentacool can often remain undetected by swimmers right up to the moment it stings them. The second is its mysterious beams. Tentacool's gelatinous, watery body absorbs sunlight and refracts it within, producing beam energy it shoots from its clear, crystal-like eyes.
