this is really unfinished. i'm hoping to submit it to a contest, but i'm sort of stuck-ish on the background. those little blocks which the apples sit on have cute little scenes on them, so there's some detail there. i'm just not sure what i should put in the background, or maybe just a flat color? not sure. i'm planning on making the closest one a really nice looking field, the next one a really forboding castle in steep mountains, the next one a volano-esque thing with fire, and the last one an island. the closest apple, i think, i'm going to make Golden, like that story in mythology about the Golden Apple. the puzzle peices are going to be like...the universe looking (mostly black/dark blue). also, i'm thinking of copying it on another sheet of paper (a bigger one) and put a lily thing in the top left corner so she's kind of coming out of the bloom. not sure about that either, though. any feedback would be super appreciated! and it goes with this poem i wrote last year: Apples Such sweet fruit, so inviting. Of so many colors, red, green, yellow. Silken skin, smooth and pure. Perfect. Who will it be today? A single apple, so ordinary in every way, chosen for its firmness, skin, color and the hope of a sweet sugary taste buried beneath. Ordinary apple, so pleasing to see, so— perfect. Come closer, closer now. Fear is lost, savoring every moment. Flesh grazes the outer layer, feeling a frail smoothness. The perfect skin tearing and cracking— brittle as glass. The peel flakes off, floating dust in the breeze. Horror seeps out, black oil, tainting flesh. Claim ignorance.

wow, this is a really neat concept biggrin
unfortunatly, i'm horrible with backgrounds. just look at the stuff i have on my DA page. backgrounds aren't my thing.... sweatdrop
it's looking good though. just remember to don't be afraid to layer your colors when you use color pencils. biggrin

Interesting idea...
You could continue with the "cosmos" train of thought in the background... Somehow... Not sure... sweatdrop

euclids_triangle Interesting idea... You could continue with the "cosmos" train of thought in the background... Somehow... Not sure... sweatdrop that's sort of what i was thinking. but i'm really liking the idea of purple, so i think it will be more purple than what i'm doing on the puzzle peices (which will be more blue). i dunno, i hope i don't ruin it xd edit: i did some more. it's more finished, but not yet! i uploaded it to DA. i'm kind of stumped on how to put some cool glitter effects on it w/o making it look cheap, you know? http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/51599886/edit edit (no sense in making a new post!) est finis! http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/51917778/

Pastels, for me, are... interesting to work with. xd I like playing with them, but they never seem to behave for me. ((Needless to say, I have an extreme respect for the lady who does the HP book covers))
Anywho!
The apple picture... It turned out rather interestingly. I thought the last apple was going to be white? I think you might be able to coax some more color out of those pencils into the background, but other than that, nice.

I likes the tree. You're only on the brink of coming up with a good language for it, but at least its the brink. The shadow areas work very well, the rest still looks like green foam. You could have been a lot braver with the background scenery I finks... this isn't a very good reproduction, the original is more colourful, but... Solitude, certainly though. I likes.

@euclid: i love working with pastels, but i tend to suck immensely with them. i think a big part of it is because i view pastels in the same way i view oils: it's a more expressive medium, it's more for suggesting, for illusion, than realism (much like the picture Doug posted, not realistic, but it's touching, it's there). i have to remind myself that i'm not making anything, i'm trying to fool the viewer into believing that my drawing could have once been something real. and i'm not used to thinking that way. i'm not used to working with mess, making it raw and imperfect.
/artistic rambling
so pastels, while i LOVE them, are a challenge in more ways than one.
last apple going to be white? pish posh, it's like the Golden Apple in greek mythology!
@doug: i know i'm not there yet, but i think this is a step in the right direction. and one of the big reasons i wasn't so brave with the background is because a) i'm lazy, and b) i was working from a photograph: a tree in the desert.
i will find an effective way to render trees, mark my words! -lightning strikes + dramatic music in the background-

Making face shapes different is hard! Sheesh, that's one thing about my art that drives me nuts... All my male characters look alike... Ah, well. More reason to draw guys, no? lol.
Something that might also help is varying nose shapes. 3nodding Noses are weird to draw anyway, but it's interesting trying to make certain shapes on paper.

Most of my characters looked pretty similar when I did that sort of thing. It's much less of a problem when you're sitting on the beach drawing random strangers lol
