first of all, gerard butler has a scottish accent which I think stands out in the film. He did not sing the role of the phantom very well and I think they could have found someone more trained for such a demanding role. Most importantly, Erik is not meant to be sexy! Not ever! Erik is mysterious and people should perceive him as dangerous and loving at the same time. NOT SEXY.

Utakan 1. His singing is bad. Granted, for a man new to singing, he did fine. However, compared to anyone else in the movie who had years of professionalism under their belt, then he did badly. 2. His attitude While Schumacher is responsible for the major sexified attitude of the film, he carried an attitude most of the film as if he wasn't deformed and was basically some cocky guy in a mask for show. 3. His acting Not just in this film, but in a great number of films he has been in. He seems to wear the same expression--a cocky smirk--and traipses around like he is the god of sexiness. Now personally, I don't find him attractive so that atribute just makes him intolerable to me. And with the role of The Phantom, he oozed that poor acting trait which just made it all the less believable that he was a pitiful creature of a man who had been abused and hated all his life.

I don't have a problem with him, it was just a movie, so of course it isn't as good as the real thing ...

I don't hate Gerry. He was my first Phantom so of course I have a soft spot for him, but I can understand why a lot of people don't like him (WHOO run-on sentence!).
1. He can't sing (good) He's suppose to be an "angel of music". Angelic does not equal rough or forceful singing. I'm just one of those weirdos that like his voice *drool*
2. His deformity Erik is suppose to be ugly. UGLY. Not some Scottish sex god with a boil on his head.
3. His acting C'mon people...the guy from Timeline? POTO movie haters should just blame McBatnipples for casting him. I give him credit though, because he did his best. People have different ways of portraying a character.

I know this if off-topic, but Elaine, your Mcbatnipples comment made me laugh so hard I began to cry. You do not know how many times I've pointed that out about Shumacher. XD

The movie was the first versian of Phantom that I *saw* ("saw" being the key word here). I did read Leroux's and Kay's books first. I've only seen one other versian on stage, and I couldn't see anyone's face very well because I was so high up. So I don't have much to compare to.
I don't really have a problem with Gerard Butler (I've also never seen any of his other movies). Other than he's just way too pretty for the role of Erik. Also, his voice isn't quite right. Personally, I like his voice...I have no problem with his singing. It just doesn't really fit. I mean, it would be pretty hard to get anyone who can sing as well as Erik is supposed to be able to, if there is in fact anyone who can sing that well, and getting someone who can sing AND act is hard. But it would have been nice to have gotten someone with a voice more suited for opera. I did think he had good emotion to his voice, though. The guy who played Erik in the show I saw at Kalamazoo had a better voice, I thought, but he didn't put hardly any emotion into his singing.
My friend, who got me into Phantom in the first place, said that Gerard Butler's voice was perfect (she also said he's too good-looking, it's just the voice she liked).

I actually liked Gerry...and the movie...a lot. But here are three things I didn't like: 1. The sword Fight. I just like fireballs better. 2. Christine. But I pretty much hate her in any version, though Emmy played her very well (performance wise, it was amazing) I just hate Christine. 3. The Phantom Sunburn of Doom, I wrote a paper on POTO for a Theory class and mentioned that he seems to get less ugly as the versions progress. XD

At least, not with the stage productions. At the Fox, the Phantom was so bad it looked like part of his skull was exposed!

PhantomoftheFox Why don't I like Gerard Butler? I can't really name one thing that puts me off entirely. It's more an assortment of little things that just grind my nerves... We do not like his voice so rough We do not like his chest so buff We do not like the way he prances We do not like his spandex pantses We do not like his poofy shirt And how we hates that stupid smirk! We do not like his shiny hair We do not like lack his lack of flair Or how he throws around his cape (Hey, Gerry! Take a clue from Snape!) We do not like him here nor there We do not like him anywhere We do not like the Scottish man That's why we second Uta-san 3nodding Lord of the Rings and Dr. Seuss are bad for me... *cough* I personallly belive in most of what you just said...but I don't belive it's Gerry's fault for his spandex pants and his poofy shirt. That is the pervy director's fault. His singing was 'okay' and what I mean by 'okay' is that...I belive he did well for not having a background in singing but they could have found someone better. I liked his singing in Music of the Night but other then that...I prefer the totally deformed Erik over Gerik...yeah...my friends think I'm strange that I like the Deformed Erik better then Sunburn Guy... I need to make shorter posts...

I must say, the only part I liked of his singing was (bite me) PONR and Mirror. I only liked PONR because I haven't heard any other version, and Mirror because it sounds good. My favorite Erik is from the Leroux book. heart . So hated, yet just wanting love (by kidnapping poor Christine, but anyway). They also got one other aspect wrong. Daae is supposed to be BLONDE with blue eyes. They should have stuck whoever played Meg in the role, then the movie would be slightly better. Also, isn't Raoul supposed to have a brother, Philippe? Idiots forgot to add him, I suppose. scream . They got so much wrong I could scream. Carlotta is how she should be, but is a bit too much of a diva, and her freakishly 'boob-tastic' outfits that are too low-cut for anyone on this planet, or any other. They also cut out much more of the book, such as the Persian. But I digress, the movie was ok, they just could have gotten better actors/actresses to fit the parts and sing like they should have. (Plus Raoul is supposed to be a semi-FOP, too. He cries every other chapter!)
