Across the long and rippling grass in morning's first light he came.
Sun struck and lit up in golden hues the plain before teh shadowed forest, from which a figure strode in lone procession. From the dark greens, into the gold which rose high on his body, the sodden black widebrim hat began to stick out, as did the dark green coat. But that wasn't what he was worried about. It was hot.
Pulling down his goggles, Kalis removed the hat from his head, holding it in one hand. Silvery hair of white fell out and about his head, shimmering like the grains in the morning light, with a hue different but not such a sore thumb as the dark colors.
Staring out at the plains passively, his mind was far from enjoying the waves in front of him.
His free hand, covered in thick gauntlet, unstrapped the top of his coat. The long, dark vestment took off in winds that moved the grass, rippling and flowing freely behind him as he marched across the open space.
Leaving the belt around the coat done, he slid his arms out from the sleeves, and tugged the top out from under the belt strap. The top of his coat fell over to hang behind him, flickering in the gusts as well.
And so, coat hanging open and flying around by his waist, large sword across a torso covered only by a light black undershirt without sleeves, gauntlets on hand and greaves on feet, he trod slowly across the golden plains, letting the sun dry his soaked body and squishing greaves, tinted goggles hanging around his neck glinting in the brilliant light.

The golden day dried him quickly, in the vast, open spaces, the sun lighting the brightness of his light, creamy skin and the brilliant white hair, drying already in hot morning sun. The white hair was already dried, flickering around his face freely.
Slowly he smiled.
It was a reminder of the fields. Of the song. The open places of simple people, who could work through their days, and smile and sing. Poor, but content, and in so richer than the wealthy he had known. And so they were free; their burdons were the things they took joy in. A happy life, were one need only fear the ruining of crops might make him turn over coin to a neighbor with better luck, or a tax collector who had realized after so long there were people living in that touch of the map.
Golden plains, flickering in golden light. First rays of suns light, first signs of hope. Dance of grass, the song of the land. A earnest smile of innocent joy, a beginning found again.
Half dry, Kalis was not cold through the night as he had felt before, but warm, and invigorated. Turning in the stretches of field, empty of people and conflict within sign of his eyes, he shut his eyes, and floated, it felt, through the waves of tickling grass.
Sometime later, not sure how long, he felt something immediately near him, and opened his eyes. Diverted from his walk's straight path, there was a small, run down old hut of sone and wood upon the plain. Glancing about for inhabitance, he smiled, and angled his path that way.
Entering a doorway without a door, he looked around. Part of the roof was missing, and the windows and door, allowing the golden light to still wrap its warm embrace about him. There was little in way of furniture. A bed long since torn apart and made home of many rodents, a small dresser standing against a wall, and a crate or two against the four walls standing sturdy. It could fall if undone, but nothing he'd do accidentally would tip anything.
Checking out his windows and doors for company, he decided he was safe for now, beyond sight of much of anything else to note.
Kalis sat on the dresser's top, leaned back against the stone wall, sun falling un his upturned face. Slowly, eyes blue as the sky drifted shut, and he fell asleep in the warm light and cool breeze, and the quiet sounds of the plains, undisturbed by machinations of man just yet.

That...was the worst headache she had experienced in 2,000 years. At least she was alive. At least Hakan and Daniel were alive. She was even relatively uninjured...her wounds from yesterday all but closed, Kami's accelerated healing bandages making sure of that. Still a bit raw, and she wasn't sure how much she really wanted to test that hole in her wing, but...
Crimson eyes swept around, over the fortifications. It wouldn't be long before they came here next.
Claws pressed into her palm, drawing blood as Flare clenched her fist. She wasn't letting them take another inch.

Sunstrike squinted under his hood, looking for Silver hair. Spotting what he was looking for, he breathed a quick sigh of relief.
Thank the gods...
"Flare!" The shout echoed over to the woman as he jogged to her.
"What in the name of all hell happened?! Are you alright? Is everyone else alright?"

"Sun!"
The relief in her voice was apparent, though she refrained from embracing him. She wanted to make sure he was solid, he was there, after all that had gone down scant hours before.
She had lost him in the battle, and hoped to all hell he had survived.
"I'm fine, we're all alive, though I don't know about Kami," she answered, her voice slowly falling back into its normal pattern. All business, a battle report. "We lost the fortress to the enemy - Skinner's men, I think, they had guns - I don't know how but they somehow brought it crashing down on top of us." Her eyes swept over the ragtag leftovers of her forces. "Well, all the humans are still alive. I think we lost a number of shades.
"They had some sort of rock man with them, I think he can manipulate stone somehow. Oh, and..."
Flare stopped, biting her tongue. Were Sun only an ally, she wouldn't have told him. It would unsettle him, she was sure, and that would not bode well for the coming battle.
...but better than him finding out in the middle of a battle, when one mistep could be crucial.
"...Vahn's here. In the Vale. I know not who he's working for or where he is now, but I don't think he's on our side."
That was an understatement. Any of the surviving shade NPCs, if questioned, could tell Sun about the massive attack Vahn had tried to unleash on their fortress.

He didn't pause, as she had, and gathered her up in a huge hug, his old self popping through for a moment in a display of overaffection.
Her report left him disgruntled though, and he gently put her down, looking around. "Dan's set this up well. A lot of the options we neglected at the lake will be made up for her-"
His heart stopped. All those twinges, all the little feelings nagging him...
"You're ******** kidding me..." The whisper was low and harsh, but not overly directed to Flare. How the hell did Vahn do it?
Sunstrike was lost, on the other side of the freaking world of Gaia...and he'd still been found, he'd been running since then, and every town, every place, if Sun stayed too long, low and behold there was Vahn.
"What the hell am I..." He blinked at the shades. "Flare! I need paint or chalk... something yellow..."

At first Flare stiffened at the hug, feeling nearly crushed by the taller man. Then she relaxed, giving him a quick hug back. He was there.
Sadly, she shook her head. "Saw him with my own eyes. Yelling out my name on the battlefield and everything."
Paint? Chalk? What?
Flare grabbed a shade, one of the archers, and instucted it to go find something suitable. Surely there would be something so mundane as paint lying around...perhaps a can of spray paint the miners used to mark trees had been washed here in the flood?

Sunstrike Sun was already struggling out of his hoodie and shirt. His uppertorso was a bit of a mess at the moment, even if the tones and muscles were nice. Scars and burnmarks lancing through the pale skin, distorting the natural sun designs, which seemed faded a bit since he'd lost the salamander inside of him. Large circle scars on his back were the worst though, rising up in deep gouges, as if something nasty had been ripped off. The bandages that were on his chest from Athan's swing didn't cover these for some strange reason, as if the old scores were still sensitive. Laying the hoodie to one side, he managed to flag down the Knight that had followed him down. By now the other attachment of shades had come as well, the place was practically seething with the creatures. "That's a nice jacket, would you mind...?" The one eye blinked before the overly large bit of kit was handed over. The shade himself had gotten it out of the usual grabpile that had been given out after he'd become an individual. It had no personal attachment to it at the moment, and would probably be lent another in the future. Sunstrike took it over to the rest of the clothes and Flare. By then the spraypaint had shown up. Shaking the half empty can, Sun leaned over and made a marking on the hood. The intense look of concentration on his face as he worked brought out the curiosity of many a passing shade, and it wasn't long before they were in a whole group of the creatures. When he'd completed it he pulled up some of the dry grass and sprinkled it on, the excess wetness was dried up by the grass, and he was able to shake it out, completely dry, before throwing it over his head. Next came the jacket, which was buckled from knee to neck, hood of course staying out until the last moment, when he put it over his head, there would be a big yellow eye right on the top. He waved his large sleeved hands at Flare and grinned. "Camoflauge!" From very close, it wasn't that impressive, but from a distance, Sun blended in with the rest almost perfectly, the way the collar was on the shirt made sure that most of his features were covered. Mind you...he was a little short for a shade, but he probably could pull off being a runt of a pawn.

Flare just watched Sun, perplexed as he started undressing. What in the world was he going to do?
Outwardly, her face remained impassive, but an inward voice gave a hiss of sympathy for Sun's scars. Her eyes traced over them, wondering. What had caused each one?
She watched what he was doing almost as much as she stared at the circular scars on his back, wondering if something had happened to his wings.
And then she laughed.
Sun was grinning, holding up "camoflauge" that looked ludicrous from this short distance. She was laughing at his smile, at the pride in his voice, like a child who hung up his pictures on the refridgerator door. She was laughing at his cleverness, his resourcefulness in coming up with such a thing.
And worrying that he felt the need for it underneath. Why would Vahn...?
Burn that bridge if you come to it.
And with that sage advice, she simply grinned at Sun. "Brilliant."

There was a weak noise from Kalis' pocket. He stirred but didn't wake up. It repeated, warbling, but getting stronger. He shifted, opening and eye, and quickly looking around. Didn't see any danger. It came again, then stopped. Kalis went to the window, looking out, thinking on what exactly to do. He was lost somewhere, and still damp. Alone and lost. Sighing, he took the phone out of his pocket, and flicked it open. "This thing still works well enough to ring?" He put it to his ear, and stopped to listen. Garbled. He couldn't make out a thing, the phone was all fuzzy and screwy. He tried the message a second time. No better. And the third, he heard his message. Message: "Yeah Kalis, it's Jacknife. We're going to run up through the caves and take the Twilight forest so we have some better tactical positioning as well as just having more control in general. If you could help us out at all thats would be pretty awesome." "Twilight forest..." he considered, trying to remember where those were and what they looked like. "Wait, through the caves? I saw some caves in teh forest back when I was... so if that's the twilight, and I'm on the plains south of it, that means..." He paused on that note. "Oh ******** his clothes hanging to keep his light colors showing, not the darker which would stand out, he tucked the hat roughly under his belt to hold it in place. And, bending over in the grass to keep his head below it's level, occasoinally peeking up to check his direction, he made his way back toward the forest as quietly and quickly as he could manage.

((Laughs at Fish: Poor guy ^w^;; sorry to like, throw an army on top of you, but lessons needed learning for us, and we're building up.))
Sun scratched his nose and blushed, he'd not been called that by anyone before. It felt nice.
"Our next step is to conquer that river and the dam bridge that helped those reinforcements cross into the ruins. Luckily we're close by to it, but we might have some trouble on the other side. Mind you, if we just destroy the land/wreckage bridge, that means they're source is cut off."
He looked towards the river. It would be easy to set up defenses on the embankment, he surmised, but destroying the bridge without a whole cascade of miners coming down on them would be difficult.
"Any way we could dislodge it from the middle?"

No cost was too great to protect these plains. They were the last line of defence before enemeies would be climbing to the gates. Thus it was no suppprise Omikron sent down more shades to help protect Daniel's defences.
The first line was fifteen aditional pawns, ten of which equip with various melee weapons. While the last five each had dark matter powered crossbows. Slower to reload, but deadly if their aim was true.
Five hulking rooks came behind those, four of which armed only whith their fists. The center rook had two horns as if he was wearing a helmet, as well as a stone slab slung over his shoulder.
The bishops came next, two shadow, one fire, one ice and one wind. Each wearing makeshift robes to designate the spells they could cast.
"Cheerio folks!" Apparantly Noel had recovered and was down to assist in these defences. Wheater that would just grate on Flare's nerves was another question.
Noel was a null mage, capable of weilding non elemental force. He also had the ability to sacrifice all his magical abilites to let the fearal shade inside of him take over, and become a bezerker.
The null mage was acompanied by four armoured shades, each with a sash slung over one shoulder. They each had a tower sheild and a polearm that looked just like a sphere on a stick. What made them special was the runes covering that orb and their large sheilds. These where the preist-protectors of the shade army, capable of taking on the elemental alignment of whatever bishop they were protecting.
"I'm not too late am I?" Noel commented in hopes of finding out who was in charge.
30 Reinforcements.
