And achieve it he did, his slice ripping through the wet bark in a diagnol motion that added another strike to the tree's trunk. That did good for reaffirming his confidence, that last misstep was a fluke. He was incharge of the sword, not some tree. It could not turn or alter the course of his blade anymore, that was his job and his alone. Stopping his minicelebration short, he stood back once more and raised the bokken high above his head. It was time to give the tree some more stripes.

Heaving his mass forward, he brought the wooden blade down hard upon the wood. Or atleast that was his intent, his vertical slash did nothing but swish through the air. Which made no sense to him, he'd made a completely vertical slash and thats where the tree was. Why had he not hit it? Maybe it was his positioning, he probably had a bad stance or something. No, his stance was solid. Maybe he missed because....he stood to far away from the tree! Shin couldn't help but facepalm himself.

The stupid mistakes were messing him up, which meant he needed to focus more. He needed to clear him mind of all emotion, and everything else that was distracting him. Only once he focused his mind, geared for but this moment would he be able to continue his training without making such stupid errors. Not too say that the training would go perfectly but he would have a much higher rate of survival. Acknowledging this fact was only have the struggle, he needed to act upon this knowledge to make things happen.

But it wasn't going to be so easy to focus, a lot of things had been happening lately. With all of these explosions, smoke, fire that picked at his homeland even now. He still had no clue what was going on, whether the attack came from outside or was just the Mistress taking out her stress on the village. Regardless, he was furious that his home was under attack but he couldn’t do anything. He was just an academy student afterall. But just because he was weak didn’t mean that he does have the same anger the adults do.

Someone needed to pay for what they were doing to Kiri, but he had not help bring that payback; he needed more strength first. And that is why he was currently training, to get that strength, the strength to defend his home. These thoughts ever faced through his mind, fueling his determination but causing his focus to stray from the task at hand. In order to not suck horribly and slash at the air over and over again instead of his target, he needed to realign his thoughts.

Shin stood tall, his back straight his legs sprawled out and his hands at his sides. Standing in this relaxed position he took in deep gulps of air, inhaling and exhaling at a slow harmonious pace. He then set his mind on the thoughts he was trying to rid himself of: the doubt, anger and frustration in his mind. A fact which may seem foolish, focusing his mind on what he wanted to free from it but it was the only way in which he could rid himself of such hassels.

So grasping each distractive emotion in turn, he focused on and then dealt with it. He reminded himself that he need not doubt his skills, he’d already show himself to be a good student. He reminded himself that he need not be angry at those who attack his home but rather pity them for they would receive their just desserts very soon. He reminded himself that he need not feel frustration at being left to way side, it gave him more time to train and put the mission into better hands. And taking in another deep breath, he let go of his worries.

Now worry free and ready to get down to the nitty gritty, Shin moved from a relaxed into a ready stance. His feet which had been parallel shifted such that his left foot was forward. His hands which had been separate joined together over his left shoulder. His muscles which had been sleeping, tensed up in preparation. Then with no further delay, he took a step with his right and threw his weight forward.

His hips turned counterclockwise and his bokken came whizzing down from overhead to take a bite out of the tree. And what a big bite it was. His mighty swing cut a large gash into the tree, much longer and wider and thicker than his earlier ones. It was if the weapon in his hand was being held by a much larger and stronger man than before. And in essence that was true, but freeing his mind of distractions he had freed his full potential.

Shin stood back for a moment to admire his work, and had to nod to himself. This was good, very good. It showed that he was improving somewhat, that he was getting better control with a sword. He was nowhere near ready to use such a thing in battle but he was getting there. So there was no time to waste, he needed to get himself in tip top battle conditions are soon as possible. Raising his sword once more, he advanced on the tree for another attack.

Thwack! Thwack! Thwack! Shin struck the tree in rapid succession. Strike followed strike followed strike to obtain the goal of rending the tree limb from limb. He was in the zone, focused on only the next blow and the next one after that. Maybe he was too focused, too energized. Maybe he put too much power behind each blow, because he ended up tossing his blade away. Cursing to himself he chased after it in, thankful that it didn’t go into the tall grass this time.

Marching away from his little training spot and out into the open, Shin went about retrieving his training implement. It was not that far away and not hard to see, so getting it back into his hands did not take as long as it had before. However that was the only thing to be thankful for, his bokken looked pretty beat up. His last strike had been way too hard, the wood beginning to warp and bend in several places. He was just lucky that his weapon was still intact. It would terrible if he ended up breaking it beyond repair, he had much work to do after all if he was ever to whip himself into fighting shape.

Putting away the thoughts of his recent failure, Shin took a few steps to get back to his original position to resume his training. He grounded his feet, loosened his shoulders and held his tool tight in both of his hands. His body angled towards the tree, he stared hard ahead for a moment getting his target firmly in his mind. He twisted his shoulders to one side, bring his body weight in the same direction as if coiling a spring. He held that pose for a moment before releasing that metaphorical spring, his body swing back the other way.

His swing was hard, it was crisp. His mind was focused, it was controlled, it was pumped. His soul reverberated with the desire to strength and then restrengthen his abilities. But that was not enough for a good slash. Even though he had all of the above, all of that was not enough for a slash that would cleave limb from limb. Sure he left a groove in the tree, but that wasn't good enough for him. Something was missing. A critical component of the swing was just lacking, something he had not yet thought of but was probably really simple and obvious.

Just realizing that something was missing wasn't good enough for Shin, he would need to discover what it was that he lacked before his training could be complete. And seeing as Shin was not the philosophical or deep thinking type, he would figure out what he needed to improve on the old fashioned way. Just keep doing things until one of them feels right. Tightening his grip once more, the young shinobi reeled back. Raising the bokken over his right shoulder, he extended out his arms moving his body into someone along the lines of a baseball stance.
