We don't use them for the show, of course. Any band that would is just plain sad. Even early in the season when we only march and play part of our show, we don't use lyres. We laugh at bands that do. We do, however, use them in the stands. Except for the fact that I take mine off whenever possible since the bones dance around for most of our songs and my crappy lyre falls off when I dance...

Lyres look so horrible we don't use them ever!! I don't even know what a lyre for my instrument looks like. They are icky and look very unproffesionall.. okay *deep breath* We do use flip folders in the stands because to quote our directors "just because there stand tunes doesn't mean they can't be musical."

How would you use a flip folder but not a lyre in the stands? Wouldn't you need something to hold up your music? It wouldn't be a huge problem for, say, a trumpet or trombone, but for people who play flute/clarinet/sax it would be pretty difficult to hold up your music AND play at the same time.

Well, being in the percussion section, I never get to touch them. But our band does use them for pep-band.

flute lyres are the worst. the other kinds of lyres are on the instrument. OURS unfotunately have to sit there on our arm. we have to constantly be afraid of whacking sombody with them. that AND the fact that they suck because they're hard to use. they're never in the right position.

since i'm a freshman, we used em alot this year......but only for pep band music in the stands and ralleys and stuff like that, never on the field
lyres are such a burden though, they keep on falling off and they leave a mark on your arm (for flutes anyways)

I definitely here you there ~_~;; You can never get them just right, they're always falling off or way too tight on your arm. And of course the lovely red marks they leave. In the beginning of the season when it's hot, they make my arm all clammy too. Me personally, I can't use a lyre anymore. If I do I'll end up staring at the music and not looking at like, where I'm going XD

Masquanade Miangel We only play in the stands, so yeah, we use them all the time. ^^;; Flute lyres = SATAN. They cut off your circulation and they SUCK. x_x Luckily I get to use a sax lyre this year, since now I'm on sax for pep band. i tried a flute lyre on once . . . god those things are horrible!! but we don't even use lyres in the stands sweatdrop we know almost all of our music and even if you don't- we just hold up our music because it's like one song out of five that we don't know. I had a flute lyre in which the elastic was no longer stretchy, that was the definiton of horrible... Now I have one with good elastic and it too cuts off my circulation in my arm...

I... have a thing against lyres.
My first year in marching band, I was the only person besides my section leaders who memorized the music for our holiday parade.
So yeah... I don't use lyres.
In the stands, however, we use music. We just stick the music under the sash of the person sitting in front of us. We do this for most stand songs, besides, of course, the fight song. Which we unfortunately have to memorize. And I just realized that I have to re-memorize all the stand stuff for next year! Joy...

In highschool i had really bad eyes so i just memorized all my music. I barely used one back then now in college band i have no choice cuz we have WAAAAAY too many damn songs. Occasionally i'll use it with a flipfolder of tuck the folder away and just keep the lyre on. It is hard to keep the music on when your doing choragraphed moves in the stands.

Yeah, I dun't use one, either. They arn't allowed in competitions, so we memorize the music. And besides, I can't keep track of where I'm going anyways. In middle school we used them for parades, but I ended up just remembering the music, since it was so easy anyways. Mine always flops around my sax and falls off, I can't stand them!
