Baptiste takes off his hat and holds it. "Sorry to bother you so late, Tamlin, it's just--oh God, you're in your night-clothes." He looks away, blushing. "I...I was just wondering...it's getting awfully cold out here at night, and I thought maybe I could sleep on the floor...?" He honestly wasn't expecting her to be dressed for bed already. She makes him feel like an awkward young boy. Robs him of his silver tongue and makes him stutter like an idiot.

Coloring slightly Tamlin pulled the robe closer, but then started giggling slightly at his broken composure. "oh this, don't mind it. It's still clothing. Now don't just stand in the doorway letting in the cold, come in." Tamlin motioned him inside the wagon. "here, sit down and have some tea, it certainly is getting cold outside."
Without allowing any argument she pulled him by the hand and sat him on the bed and then brought over the tea.

"Oh, uh, thanks." He blows the surface of the tea to cool it and then sips. "I'd thought my tea was decent, but it tastes like dirty water compared to yours," he says, regaining a little of his composure. He presses his hands to the cup, warming them.

She laughed, "Don't be absurd, it's all about the same. I'm sure your tea is fine." Tamlin had wandered back over to the small kitchen area and poured herself another cup of tea. it is good tea though she thought with satisfaction smelling its fragrance. She leaned up against the wall silently sipping her tea. She had known that this problem would come up as the weather progressively got colder. Baptiste had been a perfect gentleman at first, sleeping outside so she could have the bed inside.
Setting the cup down and absently toying with a stray strand of hair she looked over at Baptiste. "Well, it certainly is getting cold. Too cold to be outside once night falls."

Baptiste nods into his cup. If I didn't think so highly of her this would be so much easier, he thinks, frustrated. "I could sleep on the floor," he offers. "Although, if it isn't too bold of me to suggest, there's room enough for two in the bed, and two would be much warmer than one. I give you my word as a gentleman and your friend...." he'd been rushing through his words and realizes here that he has no idea how to finish the sentence. He buries his face in his teacup again.

It was a good thing she had set the cup down; she probably would have dropped it with his last comments. His words had been said in a blur, but she had properly heard the end. She had been thinking of asking Val or perhaps Caroline to help her fund buying a small wagon of her own. Then Baptiste could sleep in his own bed again. The option he had just proposed was absurd!
She turned bright red clear to the tips of her ears. quickly she turned around and took a deep drink of tea to hide her embarrassment. what was she thinking! He was a good friend! Why am I doubting him? he just wants to come in 'cause it's cold right? She thought to herself, but everything seemed a bit muddled in her head. A furrow appeared between her eyebrows, Why wasn't the floor good enough then? to... to, to share a bed with a man! she hadn't done that since she was a little girl with her brothers!

Baptiste bites his bottom lip as she turns away. Failure. Now look what you did. "Tamlin....cripes. Please don't take offense. Forget I mentioned it." He stands up and sets his now-empty teacup down on the counter. "I shouldn't have suggested it. I don't know what I was thinking, please forgive me, I am a gentleman." He begins to pace. "I was only thinking of you, I thought you might be more comfortable if I...well, nevermind." He shakes his head. "It was an absurd idea. I'm sorry."

What is this situation! How awkward! Tamlin thought to herself and she began fiddling with the teapot preparing another round of tea. Anything to busy herself and release the tension in the wagon. Randomly opening and closing boxes and rummaging around just to keep her hands busy, she couldn't even recall that everything she needed for tea was obviously already out.
Finally she managed to boil the water correctly and poured herself a cup of hot water. In her haze she had forgotten to add the tea leaves. But the hot water, and the time, managed to calm her down to at least think rationally. He was a good friend, it was his wagon after all, she was just a guest, the weather is getting cold.... but to even suggest sharing a bed! no matter how rational she was now that thought kept interjecting and throwing her into a tiff again.
In her internal ranting she became aware Baptiste was still in the wagon. Exuding a very hurt and panicked aura as he paced back and forth. "Here. Tea." She said abruptly thrusting a cup of hot water at him. It was all she could think of in an effort to clear the mood in here.

"Oh. Thanks." He looks down at the cup and has to suppress a grin. Your charms do still work, old man, he thinks. But no, he squelches that thought as quickly as it had come. She's your friend, not some random girl. She isn't flustered, she's angry, because you're an idiot. Obediently he drinks his "tea" and slowly sits back down. In a chair, not the bed. He'd go outside but she's between him and the door, and he doesn't want to have to brush past her when she's in this state. She might make with a frying pan like Gené had done once. Gené. Now there was a mistake. At least Tamlin's a rational woman with her sanity still intact.

Finishing her cup of hot water Tamlin quickly washed the dishes and set them to dry. Drying her hands of with the towel she absent-mindedly walked to the bed and sat down on it hugging her knees to her chest. She was painfully aware of Baptiste's close proximity now as she had never been in the past. Even from the beginning they had had an easy relationship. She had been comfortable with him being near and touching him casually. I even do his laundry! a wry smile touched her lip at that thought. Twining her curls in her fingers she silently sat, staring at her feet wondering just what to do. To accede to the request and share a bed was absurd, but at the same time he had told the truth. He had been a complete gentleman to her, there was no reason for her to doubt that.

Baptiste drains his cup and sets it down. She'd moved past him to sit on the bed, so now he stands and gathers his hat. He plops it on his shaggy head and moves toward the door. "Forget I mentioned it. Really. Goodnight, Tamlin. Sleep well. I am sorry." He opens the door and the crisp night air stings his nose.

Wow, Tamlin thought as she sat on the bed, he sounds extremely dejected... Then the usual thought countered, As he should be! it was a stupid request!
wrapped up in her own thoughts she hadn't even noticed that Baptiste was leaving the wagon until she sat shivering against the cold rush of wind as he opened the door. The cold air brought her to her senses. she was angry, yes, but she hadn't meant to drive him away. agreeing with him was absolutely out of the question but, she wanted him to stay, to talk it over.
"Baptiste. Wait." she called out, shocked slightly by the force in her voice. "I... you..." She faltered. What in the world should I say? Then suddenly the tea cup he had left caught her eye. "don't... don't leave dishes around..." It came out faltering, and felt rather silly. it was just one little cup after all, but if it brings him back in... that's all I want

Baptiste turns back with a confused expression. It's just a bloody teacup.... Nevertheless he slowly walks back in and picks up the cup. He squats near the basin of water she'd been using to wash dishes and washes the cup out without saying anything. He keeps his head low and his eyes on the work. Then he straightens up and dries it, and returns the teacup to its hook on the wall.

Alais scratched at the latch for the window. Stupid humans closing doors. She had been wandering around outside when the man-type opened the door. She wanted in so of course he had, but then the door closed before she got to it, how inconsiderate! Either way, these human contraptions wouldn't keep her out. -Snap!- the lock turned. Climbing down from roof and onto the bed; suddenly her fur bristled. the aura was distinctly unpleasant. furthermore, she had been completely ignored. to remedy this she hopped into Tam's lap and maneuvered to stare right at her face. Fix it. It's my turn
Despite the awful tension in the air Tamlin couldn't help but laugh as Alais wormed her way into her arms. Staring at her demanding eyes suddenly she felt refreshed.
Looking up at Baptiste slightly abashed, She took a deep breath and composed herself. "Look, Baptiste. No need to apologize, I'm sorry. I was perhaps overhasty in my reaction."

Baptiste wonders, as men do, what the right response to that is. Likely as not there wasn't one. He regards the furry creature in Tamlin's lap with scrutiny. Raccoons belong outside, he knows, else they'd eat all the food. "Eh, perhaps, but whether you were or not it was still far out of line for me to suggest," he says, tiptoeing around his words carefully. He doesn't want to hurt her feelings, but really it would be nice to sleep inside again.
