Ooh! Ooh! I haven't even been accepted into the guild yet but I feel so compelled to post. eek
Anyway, I've been playing Bb clarinet for 5 years, from 4th grade up until now. I took a year off last year because that was my stupid year where I did stupid things. But I'm good now. I've been practicing like crazy to get up to speed! I used to be so good too... crying Mine's a nice wooden LeBlanc clarinet my grandpa bought in Paris long ago... my aunt plays too, she's in like 4 different orchestras and still takes lessons.
I'm in concert band. I would love to try marching band, but there's absolutely nothing around here. xp ah, well. This is my first year in band, and I'm having some fun getting broken in, so to speak. domokun gyar, I feel like such a n00b when I'm in band. I'm a good player, but oh how confused I get.

My high school doesn't have a marching band either, so don't feel bad. Frankly, I'm kinda glad we aren't marching, because it requires so much concentration and the clarinet jiggles in your mouth. xp Not cool. Plus the sweltering sun doesn't make the actual parade or the practices any better. But marching band is the coolest thing to be apart of, I must admit! I didn't practice all summer (bad me!) so I felt really unprepared the first day of school when I walked into band. But I picked up the notes again pretty easily and now, although school just pretty much started (third week), I'm back into the playing now. I was really out of practice before! 3nodding Don't worry! With 5 years of experience, I'm sure you'll be just fine! biggrin

A response to each of your sentences, in order, from one who knows: It doesn't? That sucks. You're right about the concentration, but once you get used to moving with the clarinet and holding it right, the mouthpiece stays pretty still. The sun is killer, yes, especially in parades, where you can't stop. In practice you get water. Yes, yes! Despite all the drawbacks and the homework until midnight, nothing beats marching band, unless it's a better marching band in a competition.

I was in a elementary school district who got first 9 years in a row and counting! But that was cause no other districts nearby were very good (as you can probably imagine!). But in middle school, rivalry was fierce! I went to this band camp that had some of the "opposition" in it, and it was a staredown, literally, only I thought one of the guys was hot, so that kinda ruined the atmosphere. whee 3nodding But anyway, yah...we beat them anyway so its all good. I can concur with the concentration thing. I hate it when you have to walk over potholes in the road! OMG!!!!! I'm always afraid I'll trip and go flying but luckily that has never happened. And I know it sucks that we don't have a marching band. crying I will seriously miss marching. And the sun is like, a marcher's worst enemy, but its actually better for us at parades (unless we are standing at attention) because we get misted by generous parents! biggrin In practice, we just stand, saying, "Atten, hut!" and measuring out our steps. And practicing turns. We suck at turns. eek Oh well! I love marching band in general. I so wish I could march again. sad

DazzlingCherry12 Yah, that what I hear everyone say, and its kinda intimidating, but I do already know how to play a scale on it. Its really weird though, cause you have to pinch your mouth really tight on the double-reed and then if you go to play the clarinet right after, the mouthpiece of the clarinet feels like a mouthful. Its kinda hard to adjust! Feels all weird. 3nodding So you play oboe now? Or clarinet? Or both? I would really envy you if you played both! Then you would be like my friend, only my friend knows how to play, like, everything (and she's good at everyting too!), so... whee Both. Clarient for marching band, and Oboe for Symphonic Wind Ensamble. (( sweatdrop the concert bands got this flashy name. we are by NO MEANS a real wind ensamble.))

Andy1989 I know! I hate holding my Bass at attention! It's nice when we're marching though because I can rest the neck on my shoulder...But that's only if we're marching! If we just stand there I can't have it on my shoulder and it's really annoying. And since I'm the only Bass Clarinet in the Marching Band...I can do whatever position I want for the parade rest, attention, marching, and the position before he calls us to attention as long as he says it's ok. BTW: Your sig had me laughing for like 15 minutes! ((Maybe that's just because it's 2:25 A.M. here...But it's still funny)) eek Bass clarinet. In marching band. Holy wow. You ever see anyone march contra? I have once. The entire marching clarinet section at my school((all six of us)) were like "YEAYAH FOOLS!!" We almost followed them out of the stadium. sweatdrop Oh, and when I found the pic for my sig, I was like.. "MINE." It just.. fits. whee

It just.. fits. whee It's not as hard as it sounds...It's lighter than Tenors and the neck fits PERFECT over my shoulder...So that takes the load off my neck. And the skin on my right thumb has really hard skin now from marching it. whee And no...I've never seen anyone march Contra. eek I haven't even seen an Alto being played... sweatdrop

Oh, seriously this girl in our marching band actually did faint. Luckily the snare drummer behind her caught her before she hit her head on the pavement. On the day of the parade too... eek Very scary...) and we could only stand around for five minutes after marching down our service road (in front of all the P.E. classes, might I add, so we also made a fool of ourselves, especially when the P.E. students ran out in front of us when we were marching, trying to get us to trip and laugh). But, in spite of all this (and the potholes!!!! I HATE THOSE THINGS!!!!), marching band is the best! Well, kinda...

That's it! wink ) You must be hella good. We have to be invited and then we have to tryout to get into wind ensemble. xp I thought it was bad enough for us because we have to tryout for symphonic band (I was too scared to tryout last year... sweatdrop ). To make it into symphonic, you have to play all of the major scales under 60 seconds (a.k.a. a minute!) and then you have to play other select pieces that are freaking hard. Last year, one of the pieces was in the time signature 2. That's it. 2. How, might I ask, does one play a piece in 2 time? xp But concert band is fun too, so don't diss the concert band, y'all. Its the best. It also helps that I'm top of the clarinets. biggrin That's awesome possum that you can play both. I envy you so much! Not only do I not know how to play oboe, but my friend won't teach me flute cause she is convinced she sucks at it, which is so not true!!!!! But, of course, my best friend has happily offered to teach me bassoon. I told her to spare me until I had learned oboe and/or flute. 3nodding

And I dunno how I got oboe. -_-; probably because all of our oboists graduated. Thats kind of how I got into Honor Band. I decided to play alto clarient, thinking i'd get in by default. I had to try out anyways. Turns out, they didn't need an alto, but decided to let me in because I played Bb as well. ..but I had to drop out of Honor band because of Winterguard. Bah. I hate how they have all of the performances on the same days.

I've swam in the dark before, like the pitch inky blackness of night, but that's about it. I think that if I marched in the dark, I would trip over a pothole and my clarinet would go flying and it would break. crying No no, but I would definitely trip, at least once. It is your top priority. BAND BAND BAND!!!" I'm sitting there all going, okay, okay I get the picture!Don't try telling me otherwise. You are GOOD!!!! That's it. No more arguement. I WIN!!!! (See, that is what I say to win and get everyone to vote for my side in congressional debates...jkjk...I would LOSE if I said that at the end of my speech! sweatdrop ) I still haven't had my band "audition" yet for chair placement. Its like a test but my director calls it an "audition", hence the quotation marks. I'm not that nervous cause what we have to play is super easy. But I want to get it over with and its really not helping when we run out of time at lunch!!! crying
