Hmmm.... I'd have to say that they both run pretty close to the same, so its kind of hard to decide. But in the end I think I'm going to have to go with the anime. AS metioned before by some one eals, I too really like the voice actors that they got for the first season. (I wish they didn't change it up for the other seasons) Also I like the art work better to some extent. I can't help but notice in the manga how some of the characters got longated necks or strange wrinkles in their skin that shouldn't exist there. They almost look like their wearing clothes sometimes on parts of their bodies that are not clothed. Don't get wrong, I love the art work from the manga and often draw insperation from it for my own art, but just somethings strike me as strange.....

My vote definitely goes to the manga. The only reasons why the anime is worth watching is because of the cool voices, the openings/endings, the character songs, and the Homura arc. I still think Goku should've had a cuter voice. Voices I totally LOVE are Sanzo's, Hakkai's, Kouryuu's, and Kougaiji's.
Anyways, back to the point. I think sometimes the anime makes the characters look really bad. There was a point in time where whenever Sanzo was standing far away, his hair would look like bloated bananas. Sometimes the characters just look plain ugly compared to the manga.
I also don't like how they add in fillers which totally disrupt the flow of the storyline - like the Homura arc, which was a good arc, but I think it should've been left until after the Kami-sama arc. Basically, they're fighting gods in the Homura arc, so when they go up against god in the Kami-sama arc, it's not really exciting anymore.
And especially that weird lightning dragon Kougaiji summons to beat Homura which consumes him...that was plain stupid. And the bracelet which gave him more power but screwed him up...that was stupid too. The manga was much better in the fact that the side stories were actually organized and not just shoved in whenever there was an idea.
Also, the anime merges Saiyuki and Saiyuki Gaiden, which I HATE. It makes it seem like a flashback when they are talking about four different people. Also, they put Konzen in lilac even when he looks SOOO much better in white.
The colours also drive me crazy. Kougaiji Ikkou get their colours changed in Saiyuki Reload. Especially Gojyo's/Kenren's hair. THEY DARE TO CALL IT RED!! IT'S PURPLE!! PURPLE I TELL YOU!! And I expected Hakkai's hair to be black, but it was a weird brown...
Anyways...besides all the bad things about the anime, there were cool things, like the character songs, which I LOVE and listen to almost every day. And also the openings and endings are cool...I like Still Time lots...and Shiny Moon...and Fukisabu Kaze no Naka de...
That was a long reply...

Frankly, the way the anime art was done is pretty horrible. The manga art is detailed and beautiful. The facial expressions are, especially, on cue but the coloring and shading in the anime leaves much to be desired thought the voices are -amazing-
So yah. I'd go with Manga though I started with anime through the show.

manga, I read the manga first, and the drawings were really good biggrin so when I start watching the anime, it kinda destroy the drawings. and Goku sounds funny (in the Japanese version) his voice is not what I have imagined o.O and there is one major difference between the manga and the anime, have u noticed that from the original manga, when Sanzo, Gojyo, Hakkai, or Goku kills a random yukai, in the anime, the yukai just disappears (it just vanished o.O) and in the manga, it actually dies. I really don't like the way they did that in the anime, I mean Yukai is not human, bhut they r at least a living thing, which living thing just vanish when they die? it makes no sense (it makes me think of the hollows from Bleach when they're dying)

I love them both! I read the manga first, and when I started watching the anime I was shocked, and a little disappointed. I thought it followed the manga exactly... Then disk two hit and they started going their separate ways.
The manga stays a little more on track (not much though). The anime seems like half filler stuff and suddenly plot hit really hard in the last fourth of it. That third fourth you're getting a hint of plot.
I've always preferred books of any form more because it gave you a little more creativity with the characters - what they looked like, voices, little unwritten mannerisms... But the anime takes all that away. Plus I rarely like the voices used.
The positive of the Anime has been stated several time. You get more of the god forms! Plus the plot is different enough that you need to see to get the complete Saiyuki experience.
