I'm a Sticker
Meeting Cody

Thomas Brinley
Idleness was a crime. Must stay active. Must stay fit. Even with the knowledge that he was stuck on an island and could probably just retreat to his duplex for the rest of his life, old habits held true and, after spending a couple of hours in the workout room, Thom had retreated to the so-called 'village square' for a brief drill run through.

Over the past few days, he had gradually become used to his new feet. He could walk as easily as ever now, and his game hadn't lagged in the slightest--indeed, one the soreness of his new tail died out, the balance it provided allowed for some improvement to his normal skills. What he was having trouble with was dealing with life without shoes.

Running towards his chosen goal, dribbling the soccer ball from foot to foot--an opponent appeared to his right and he swerved, feigning a bolt onto to run the opposite direction, successfully avoiding a second opponent. And there was the goal. Plant foot for a kick--

And set it directly upon a particularly sharp stick. "Dammitall!"

Cody Archer
Cody has out on his explorations again. After Ambrose had left him in the entertainment room he had spent a good deal of his time watching videos and playing some games. But now he was bored, so he set out to find what else lied hidden withing the large building

He was heading to another door when he heard the familiar sound of a leather ball being kicked and soon after that someone cursing. Curious as always he went to investigate

He saw the strange mad hopping about. Seemed he had stepped on someting
He looked normal at first but then he realised he had a tail. It must be another anthro, though Cody found strange him looking so human

He walked closer to get a better view, but felt a bit shy in addressing someone he didn't knew

Thomas Brinley
Thom cursed through his teeth, tucking his knee up against his chest and hopping an ungainly circle while clutching his foot. After a quick glance to assure himself he wouldn't fall on anymore sticks, he dropped to the ground, manuvering his foot to inspect the wound. A bit of blood, but nothing serious. His entire foot was a mess by now between running around the village, jungle and beach. One more little p***k wouldn't hurt anything.

Sighing, he returned his foot to the ground and glanced around for his ball, only then catching sight of the little boy watching from a short distance away. He quirked a brow, offering a half-wave in greeting. "Ah, 'ello there. Sorry about th' cursin'. Stepped on a stick, y'see."

Cody Archer
Cody got even closer once he was addressed. Not really knowing what to say he just replied

"It' ok. But why aren't you wearing any shoes? It wouldn't hurt that way"

Thomas Brinley
"My feet've shrunk," he offered, stretching out one leg and pointing to said foot for inspection. "A bit, anyway. An' my toes're gone. So my shoes don't fit correctly any longer."

Tucking his foot beneath him, he climbed to his feet and dusted off his shorts, pacing over to the soccer ball. "'Oo're you, then?"

Cody Archer
"Oh!" he looked amazed at the feet. He couldn't imagine a reason for them shrinking, but they looked really weird with just the big toe left

"Cody Archer. You like playing soccer?"

Thomas Brinley
"Football is my life," he corrected, scooping a foot beneath the soccer ball and flicking it up into his hands before turning back to the boy.

"Was my life, anyway. Thom Brinley. Pleasure t'meet you."

Cody Archer
"Football, soccer... it's the same. Except the last doesn't get people confused" that had happened way to often where he lived. It was much more simple this way

But Cody gasped once he realised who he was talking too "You are really THE Thom Brinley? Ambrose told me you were here too, but I never expected they would let me see you. But... what happened? How did you got a tail? And scales"

Thomas Brinley
"American, are you?" He grinned, cocking his head to the side. "Anywhere else in th' world, they'll get confused if y' call it soccer."

Thom blinked, then quirked a brow, ego swelling just a tad. "One an' th' same. You're a football fan, then? I'm sorry t'say not many take th' game seriously 'ere." He paused, smile fading slightly, and shrugged. "They, ah.. Well, I'm not sure 'ow I got 'ere, t' be honest, but they're doin' some sort of experiments.. Turnin' people into animals an' such. No one's told you?"

Cody Archer
"Yeah, I am. I even collect stickers and stuff. Though..." he looked kind of embarassed when he said this "...I don't have anything of you. I kinda lost track of things since I got ill"

At the mention of the experiment he got really confused "No. Aubrey only told me there were animal-people living here. She didn't said anything about turning people into them"

Thomas Brinley
Thom laughed, waving aside the apology. "No worries, lad. I wasn't aware there are stickers of me." Ahaha, he was a collectors item.

"Mn, well, at least they warned you of that much," he grunted. Frowning down at the boy, he hesitated, nervously passing the ball from hand to hand. "Yes, well... I'm afraid th' doctors 'aven't been completely honest with you. When I awoke 'ere, I was under the impression that I would return to England as soon as my concussion healed. In reality.. I've been 'ere over a month, an' I'm turnin' into a snake."

Cody Archer
Cody smiled shyly at Thom's reply. He wasn't about to tell him his sticker album forgotten to include several important players... including him

"But what would they do that? Why did they lied to you?"

For Cody getting lied at like that was a lot worse than knowing they were turning people into animals. Being so young he didn't grasped the full meaning of what that meant

Thomas Brinley
"I don't know," he admitted, shrugging. "To keep me happy while I healed?" He couldn't think of any other reason. Other than, perhaps, that he wouldn't have believed if they had told him straight away, seeing as he wasn't exactly thinking clearly at the time.

"To put things simply.. There're over fifty people 'ere now, I'm told. No one who's been set in a duplex has managed to leave. You're stuck 'ere, lad." Blunt, but oh well. Cody had taken things well thus far.

Cody Archer
Cody noded at the explanation. It made sense, though he never liked being kept in the dark

But what Thom said next shocked him more than anything else "But-but what about my parents? They're going to get worried!"

Thomas Brinley
"Again, I don't know." Thom sighed, crouching to be more at the same level with the boy. "They'll tell 'em some story, I suppose... But you're th' youngest I've seen 'ere yet. Maybe you'll get lucky. How'd you get 'ere?"

Cody Archer
Cody couldn't believe. Cody didn't want to believe, no, he refused to believe he wasn't going going to see his parents again. He was going to get cured, return home and back to his old life again

Thom's question snapped him out of the shock "By helicopter"

Thomas Brinley
Well, that was probably how I got here as well, Thom mused, fighting the urge to roll his eyes. "Er, sorry, why are you 'ere, rather? Some people won trips, some were hired t' jobs, I was 'ere t' heal.."

Cody Archer
"Oh" Cody felt really stupid for not understanding that was what Thom meant

"I'm here to try a treatment to cure my Multiple Sclerosis. It's a disese that messes with my brain and makes by body work wrong sometimes"

He felt that he needed to prove he wasn't as stupid as his last answer made him sound like. Specially not in front of famous soccer player

Thomas Brinley
Thom didn't at all think Cody was 'stupid'. He was a kid, and Thom hadn't been very clear. He was, however, slightly impressed with the boy's knowledge of the disease.

"Multiple Sclerosis," he echoed aloud, frowning sympathetically. "Well... Per'aps you 'ave somethin' t' gain bein' here, then."

Cody Archer
Cody tilted his head to the side slithly, not sure what Thom had meant

"What do you mean?"

Thomas Brinley
Shrugging, he straightened up. "They wouldn't've brought you 'ere if they didn't think they could cure you, I'm sure. They don't let anyone leave, I doubt they let anyone, ah... get that sick either."

He forced a smile, trying to ease things for the boy's benefit. "So you're stuck 'ere, but you're goin' t' get better. Many of us don't 'ave it so lucky."

Cody Archer
Cody didn't know what to reply. It was a lot to take in at the same time. On one hand he would get cured, no more MS, no more symptoms, no more tratments. But on the other... he just didn't want to think about it

But before he could think of something to ask Thom, his bladder started complaining. If there was one thing he hated about the MS was having to go to the bathroom too often

"Is there a bathroom around here?"

Thomas Brinley
He raised a brow, but glanced around all the same, waving vaguely in the direction of the cafeteria. "I think there's one in there. 'Aven't been in most of the other buildings yet, so I'm not sure."

Cody Archer
His bladder started complaining again, this time more threatningly

"I think I won't risk it. Better go back to my room"

He started dashing but halted for a split second "Was great meeting you". Then he ran towards his duplex, before nature forced its call on the way

Thomas Brinley
Thom watched him go, surprised by the sudden departure, then, chuckling softly, dropped his ball back to the ground and resumed his practice, finally retiring to his own duplex some time later.

Reuben is a Type of Sandwich
Meeting Emelyn

Emelyn

Not for the first time- and certainly not the last... Emelyn gave a silent thank you to Cassidy for her now long-ago gift of so many bikinis. The once bright white top that she'd relied on for so many months was now practically retired- replaced, now, with any range of technicolor tops that she could easily tie in between her spines. The light bluish-grey bikini that she wore as she watched Reuben play in the surf and chase crabs was no exception- its fresh newness seemed almost stiff against her skin, compared to the worn easiness of its cast-aside white cousin.

"Hey, sweetheart! Don't get too deep in the surf! You'll get carried out by the tide!" And then, softer, "And why am I talking to a dog? Holy crap, I need to talk to more people." She laughed as she hunkered down upon the warm sand. Her beloved dog got one more good look for measure- then Em lay back and closed her eyes, her knees up to the sun but the rest of her flat against the beach. It was these lazy days that she loved... and particulary this day, she was determined not to think about the poor little boy she'd just met.

Thomas Brinley
Surprisingly, Thom thoughts--or lack thereof--were along much the same lines as Emelyn's. Ever since meeting the boy, he had felt a pang of guilt for bringing about the realization that Cody wouldn't be leaving. Mind, Cody had taken it fairly well, all things considering, but that wasn't the point. It would have been kinder to just leave the boy thinking he would be seeing his parents the day he was better, whenever that might be.

He was feeling particularly antisocial as a result, but sulking indoors had never quite suited Thom. In an effort to avoid running into anyone, he had retreated to the beach with only his soccer ball for company, as per usual. Walking just at the edge of the waves, lazily dribbling his ball from foot to foot to prevent it from being swept further out, he completely failed to notice Emelyn resting farther up the beach.

The dog, however, did not escape his notice. Indeed, the moment it caught his eye, something within him. The ball lay forgotten at his feet as he watched the pup, a slightly predatory gleam rising in his eyes. And, though all rationality said there was no possible way the pup was edible, the cobra said it was perfectly sized for dinner and, should it approach, would quickly become one.

Emelyn
Reuben saw Thom long before Em ever opened her eyes. She'd drawn her arms up over her ears and arcing over her head to rest in a folded pile above her head- closing herself off to the subtle sounds that Em would have otherwise picked up on. Otherwise, she would have keyed in to the crunch of sand beneath Thom's feet, upon the thud of the soccer ball upon the sand- and realized that the look in the snake-man's eyes was not only predatory, but also... aimed at her dog.

Reuben, on the other hand, was as oblivious that his name was a sort of sandwich as the fact that not all people were friends. The only other two people he'd met had been the fuzzy woman who'd he'd had such fun with, rushing up a tree and exciting him... and the little boy that scratched his stomach so well.

So Reuben ran full-tilt towards the slanted-browed man, his tongue lolling in the heat and his paws pounding in the surf. There was someone... to meet.

Thomas Brinley
The cobra was thrilled, though somewhat wary. Here was its meal running straight for it, but the pup seemed positively overjoyed to be approaching its end. It had seen him, that much was clear, so was the charge an attack?

Thom's lip curled in a faint hiss, baring fangs that had not yet come to exist. The cobra attempted to coil, failed as it realized its limitations, and instead set the man at a crouch to greet the pup. The moment an overly friendly Reuben reached him, Thom's hand struck out and snatched the pup up by the scruff of the neck, lifting him with little effort as he straightened up.

He grinned, pleased with the capture, and made for a deadly bite--but rationality kicked in once more, and he blinked down at the pup before dropping Reuben back to the sand, utterly confused. "Sorry, lad."

Emelyn
"I think something more than a sorry is required. Like, perhaps, an explanation." The voice was edged in ice. If Thom were to turn even a fraction, he'd see the hedgehog-woman sitting alert on the sand, her blue eyes steeled at the man who had just accosted her dog.

Emelyn had been in dreamland- enough so to disregard the sound of the newcomer's feet upon the sand... but she was not so deep into her dreams that she could ignore the sound of her dog barking. She'd opened her eyes at Reuben's run, and watched in some sort of horror as the man she figured was crouching down to accept the dog in an embrace or a pet... instead snatched him up and dropped him again on the sand. Reuben slunk down to the sand, his fours folded practically in bows as he crawled away from the man. He didn't understand what had happened as he went submissively to Emelyn, waiting to be punished. He must have done something wrong.

Thomas Brinley
Thom's eyes followed the dog away, the hungry glaze returning slowly, but at the sound of a woman's voice he abruptly snapped back to his sense. Rubbing his head as if it were sore, he glanced towards Emelyn, looking momentarily baffled before her words clicked. He grimaced, automatically resuming dribbling the ball as he started over.

"Had I an explanation, miss, I would gladly give it. But I 'aven't th' faintest idea what 'appened m'self." Sighing, Thom shook his head and let his hand fall. "Wasn't m'self for a moment there. I am sorry, really. Couldn't've fit the pup down m' throat if I'd wanted to."

Now where had that come from? Thom frowned, surprised by his own comment, and shot a glare to the scales leering from the back of his hand. "Ah.. I suppose I must be hungry."

Emelyn
"Down your throat?" Emelyn calmed somewhat, seeing that the man's eyes had changed since that predatory ...lapse in judgement. Something else about him gave the hedgehog in her a very particular message: this is potentially edible. With that signal, Emelyn had some idea what the man was- beyond somewhat irresponsible with animals and strangely attractive, that is.

"Snake, I assume." She put her hand out for Reuben to come to, and when he flipped belly-up in the sand, Emelyn rubbed his stomach as if to say 'you did nothing wrong'. She still wasn't looking at her dog, however- but focused on the man she knew she'd not met yet.

Thomas Brinley
"As far as I can tell," he admitted somewhat quieter, glare fading to a look of resignation. Pausing a few feet away from Emelyn, he deftly paused the soccer ball, hesitating as if debating whether to sit or remain standing. "An' you are, what, some kind of hedgehog?"

Ahh, here was something he had never expected to see even in his dreams: a hedgehog woman in a bikini. Mind, quills aside, it wasn't a bad view, just...different. A hedgehog woman with a dog. He was half tempted to ask if the pup had once been an islander. "Thom Brinley. You are...?"

Emelyn
"Emelyn. Emelyn White. The biggest hedgehog you're ever likely to see." A small smile crept to her lips- or, rather, what was left of them- and she overruled a strange urge she had to stand and offer her hand to Thom. She chalked it up to the sake of his accent and kept her seat- and hand- steady.

"And this little guy is Reuben." She stroked his white belly gently with her own, furred hand. "And don't worry about... before. He's not hurt. But I suggest to keep yourself fed at all times. The animal instincts are so much stronger when you're hungry."

Thomas Brinley
He cracked a grin at her introduction, nodding politely in response, but there the formality ended. Coming to a decision, he dropped to sit on the sand, placing the soccer ball at his side and immediately sinking his feet to his ankles in the sand. "A pleasure, Emelyn. And Reuben," he added, offering a hand towards the pup for inspection.

"Y'know it's gettin' bad when I start picturin' my football as a rabbit," he complained. "I'll try t' stay, ah, well fed. You'll not be an attempted meal again," he promised, nodding seriously to Reuben.

Emelyn
Reuben flipped over onto his stomach and accepted the offer of the hand to sniff- and while he decided that Thom was a decent sort of animal, Emelyn was remembering that Cody had mentioned a Thom just earlier that day, while telling her which people he'd met that had taken care of him. In those few moments, it took only the Englishman's apology- which she believed was sincere- and the sweet young boy's word that Thom was a "good guy" to accept the snake-man. And, for someone in Emelyn's situation, where the decision of who can be trusted and who couldn't... could be the last decision she ever made... that meant something- beyond animalistic nature... and more than sheer human faith. It was somewhere, nestled- almost protected- in the limbo between the two.

"I believe you. ...And I'm sorry about sniping at you. I'm just very protective of him- especially with the sort that's usually about around here."

Thomas Brinley
Thom seemed pleased by the pup's acceptance, smiling and, after giving Reuben a moment to sniff at his hand, cheerfully scritching the pup's stomach. Briefly the cobra returned, arguing that the pup was completely vulnerable once more, but Thom stubbornly shoved it away, consoling the snake with the knowledge that their next stop would be the cafeteria.

He glanced up only slightly at Emelyn's words, almost immediately returning his gaze to the puppy. Nevermind the fact that a hedgehog woman was the more unusual sight; he hadn't played with a dog in ages, traveling as he always was, especially with the Cup coming up. "Quite alright, an' quite understandable. I wouldn't trust many around him either. I 'adn't expected.. Well, I'll be better prepared now."

Emelyn
Emelyn nodded, assuming by prepared he meant to heed her advice.

"Well, most of the predators have found that the more they eat, the more the instincts let them be." While Thom was focused on the dog, Em was watching him. The excuse she gave herself was one of caution: watch for any instinct of turning, just in case he becomes dangerous... but truly, she knew that it was just that- an excuse. Thom didn't seem to have enough natural weapons to be dangerous, yet- and besides, it was unlikely that where she was staring was possessed of a weapon, anyway- so her defense... quite fell through.

Something about the way his brow folded down, making a near-'V' - caused his eyes to seem all so vivid- even dangerous. Emelyn supposed that it was the animal in him, but the visage fascinated her.

"So... if you don't mind my asking- how long have you been here?"

Thomas Brinley
"It's been difficult lately," Thom replied absently without looking up, much more interested in the puppy at present. "Eatin' correctly, I mean. Nothin' 'as seemed quite...fitting since th' change. I'll 'ave t' just grin an' bear it, I suppose." Despite the unsettling topic, he was already grinning, shifting his scritches to lightly tug at Reuben's muzzle in an attempt to rile the puppy into playing.

"How long?" he repeated, assuring himself of her question. Finally looking up, he shrugged, counting the days in his head. "Been about a month now, I b'lieve. Give or take a few days. You on the other 'and... Some time, I'm guessin'? You're not quite as far as some others I've met, though."

Emelyn
"Well, honestly I don't think I have much further to go. This is... about it as far as hedgehogs go. I've even entertained the idea that I may be done with it. And I've been here for... well, it depends on what month it is. But in any case... August. I was in the first wave. And speaking of waves..." she stood, brushing the sand out of her fur and rolling herself up onto the balls of her feet to stretch. "I hope I can trust you with my dog for a moment, because I'm roasting."

With that, she walked with her head tipped back to the sun, goggles reflecting the sunlight, headed straight for the surf. It hadn't been lost upon her that Thom was more interested in the dog than the conversation- and so, the waves had beckoned. It was a preferable option to becoming irritated with the man. ...She would return in a moment- but at least for now, Thom was on his own.

Thomas Brinley
"It's June," he offered off-hand, then tensed, grin fading. Ten months.. Ten months she had been here. Thom's good mood faded momentarily as the realization that he wouldn't be leaving struck home once more, and by the time his thoughts cleared Em was halfway to the water.

Blinking, he glanced after her, then down towards Reuben, quirking a brow at the pup before climbing to his feet. Expecting the dog to follow, he started after the hedgehog woman, resuming his lazy dribbling as he walked. "If that's th' form you're stuck in, then you're damn lucky," he shouted after her, grin returning. "At least y'still look...mostly human, save a few differences. And fur."

Emelyn
Emelyn stopped at the edge of the surf, the wet, packed sand collecting under her toes as she pivoted to look over her shoulder. Thom had crawled to his feet as well, she was surprised to see. But it was the sound of the compliment that had turned her in surprise. He'd said that she was damn lucky, if this was the 'form she was stuck in'. Emelyn wasn't the sort to blush often- and this was no exception, but she did feel a happy flush in her throat... until he finished his sentence. Then she shrugged off her slight disappointment at the true meaning of the words, and gave a soft smile. He'd meant that she was lucky to be a hedgehog- to look somewhat human... it hadn't been a remark upon her looks, as the hedgehog-girl had originally assumed.

"Oh. Well, yeah. It could be worse. Hold on. I'll just dip under. I don't mean to be a rude conversationalist or anything, but I've been outdoors all day. This fur heats up pretty quickly."

With that, she tipped her head back to her goal- the ever-expanding, inescapable sea, and waded through until she was just above knee deep. Then, as a wave rolled in, she allowed herself to half-dive into the shallow shelf, slicing into the water with ease. It was cool, easy, and refreshing. She gave herself only a minute or so, before coming up once more.

Thomas Brinley
A hidden compliment, perhaps. If one could be covered in fur and spines and still look very, very nice in a bikini, it was saying something. But at the same time, she was...well, practically an animal, and humanoid or not, Thom was still human enough that he wasn't interested in fur. Or relationships. Yet.

...Of course, wet, fur hardly mattered, and one dripping, bikini-clad woman surfacing on a beach was the same as another. He quirked a brow appreciatively, half tempted to join her in the waves, but for the time being remained in the shallows, pausing once the water reached mid-shin. "Understandable, of course. One good thing t'say of scales: I won't 'ave that problem."

Emelyn
Emelyn answered with a nod, rubbing the water off her face in a upwards motion that stopped at the edge of her goggles. She blinked the last few drops off her eyelashes, then trained her temporarily foggy vision to Thom.

"...Have you met Cassidy?"

Thomas Brinley
Thom abused the opportunity to indulge himself in a...few once-overs, though he sobered up somewhat at her question, frowning faintly and folding his arms across his chest. "Mn. Indeed. Somethin' for me t'look forward to, eh?"

Emelyn
"She's done wonders with what she has, though. ...It's sobering to see her- but if you'd seen all the things she's been able to do, I think it actually can be something to look forward to." She was both supporting Cassidy and explaining why she'd asked, all in one. There was no need to frighten the man- but rather, she seeked to possibly empower. At least, up to the shadow of a doubt. He'd obviously transformed once already- and Emelyn didn't envy him the ones that would follow. But at least he could know that there were others to support him.

But he'd already met Cassidy- and he seemed to be... if not at peace with his lot, at least calmed in its midst. It was yet another glimmer of possibility that flickered in Emelyn's mind: how could she bring anyone comfort, or ease anyone's transition, if she was out here, rather than in the village, where everyone was? How could Cody come to her when he was frightened in the middle of the night- who would Fiona turn to if she had some new escape plan to hatch? Emelyn did not think that she was the sole person that the islanders could turn to- far, far from it. But there was something about taking herself out of the line of aid that suddenly felt... selfish to her. Or at least contrived. She was confused, and found herself wading back to shore, nose pointing to the sand.

"I wish I could tell you it's not so bad a place... that you get used to it." Her eyes met his. "The latter... is somewhat true. Acceptance comes and goes- like high and low tide. But you can't get used to it. Just try to find some way to deal with it."

Thomas Brinley
He was silent throughout the entirety of her explanation, glowering darkly from behind green-gold eyes. He had accepted it, yes, however regretfully, but he could see no good in the transformation. Cassidy had done well. He? He would not. After speaking with Cassidy, after experiencing his first change, the thought of the next...terrified him.

From what he had learned, he was farther than Cassidy had been after her first change. More scales, he had a tail, his feet were already going... After the next? Who knew what could be expected. He was quite sure he would lose the ability to walk, at the very least. And he intended to make the best of his ability every waking moment until then.

"It's easy t' deal with things now," he finally replied, lifting a hand to rub the back of his neck. "It's.. th' next change I'm worried about. I can't...not...walk. An' my feet are already goin'." As if to enforce his point, he lifted one foot from the water, gesturing to the nearly unrecognizable area that had once been toes.

Emelyn
Emelyn saw the stubs of feet he now possessed, and in her mind, likenened them to sheathless hooves. She didn't allow herself to linger on them, dragging her eyes upwards to meet his eyes- which seemed inflamed with something- she didn't know what.

"And you've only changed the once?" Her words were soft. Emelyn couldn't recall if Cassidy had been so far along after her first transformation. It had been a long time ago- and back then, so many of them were still in a panic about what was happening to them- not much had been guaged for posterity's sake.

Thomas Brinley
The moment he was sure she had seen, he let his foot fall beneath the surface of the water, hiding it from sight and mind as if doing so would prevent it from being real.

"Just the once," he murmured, nodding slightly. Grimacing, he turned, pacing back towards the shore and attempting to keep his temper in check. "I've spoken t' Cassidy since--she wasn't this far after her first change. Just scales, really, an' tongue. My tongue's still fine, but my feet? My tail?" He hissed through his teeth in displeasure, throwing up a hand. "And, if that wasn't enough, I'm losin' my 'air."

Emelyn
"I wish there was an 'at least' I could tell you. But... the transitions will be rough. Between walking and... losing your legs, it'll be very awkward." She spoke gingerly, even though she was almost assured that Cassidy would have warned him. "But when you're further along- three or four changes into it, I think you'll find that you'll be able to move quickly enough and even use the muscles in your lower torso as a sort of leg... if only to... kick." She couldn't help but notice his constant, almost worrying attention to the soccerball he'd brought with him to the sand, and wondered if that was the source of some of his distress.

"And everyone changes differently. Even with similar animals. Although... truthfully, there aren't many." She hardly knew what to say except what she would have liked to hear, in the beginning. "It's not easy, but it's so much better when you know what to expect. So if you ever need help, I'm always here to answer questions. ...And... you do know about the cameras, don't you? Has someone warned you, yet?"

Thomas Brinley
"Somehow, I'd imagined they would be," he replied sharply, but sighed, grudgingly nodding in agreement as Emelyn continued. "From what I've gathered, those changes'll be a long while in coming. An' th' stages in between will be awkward an' uncomfortable."

He fell silent, remaining so for a long pause before returning his eyes to the hedgehog woman. "I appreciate your advice. And offer. Which duplex are you in? ...And I'm afraid no one's mentioned cameras, no."

Emelyn
"The cameras," Emelyn said, starting in on the easier issue to explain, "are everywhere. In the jungle, on this beach, in the duplexes. The entire island is monitored. Some places are also miked- but I don't know where, exactly. ...I make a note of warning newcomers, now. Just so they know what's happened to their privacy. And... I don't live in a duplex anymore. Mine has been empty since January. ...I live up on the mountain, now." She knelt down next to Reuben, scratching his now-wet fur and dropping her head to rest on his back.

Thomas Brinley
"Brilliant." Thom sighed, wiping a hand down his face. "Good t'know no one else I've spoken with thought t' tell me. Thank you f' doin' so. I'll keep that in mind." It was a way to mock Duvert without retribution, anyway.

"You live..." Trailing off, he raised a brow and glanced towards the quite obvious mountain looming up from the jungle. "...Righto, well, perhaps I'll come hunt you down if m' legs 'old out. I'm in duplex 45 if you brave th' village again. For now... I'm goin' to 'ead back b'fore I eat your dog." He cracked a grin, nodding a goodbye before retrieving his soccer ball and starting away. "Was nice meetin' you, Emelyn."

Emelyn
"And you, Thom. ...Take care of yourself." With that, she watched the Englishman leave, and as the snake-man disappeared into the jungle, she called Reuben to accompany her out to her fishcatch. In this day, she had met two newcomers to the island.

...Her mind would not let her dwell on how many more there must be.

Miscommunication
Meeting Rex

Rex Vadnais
The door to the workout room swished open silently as Rex peeked his head inside to see if anyone was around. The room was unoccupied and still as the man expected it to be. He only ran into people in this room every now and again, which was odd considering how much time he actually spent in there.

He made his way to the fridge and grabbed a waterbottle, twisting the cap off and taking a swig before he began. As a quick warm up to loosen his bones, Rex did some quick stretching before he began. Quads, abs, lats and biceps. Though not soon after he grabbed a thirty pound weight and went to town with crunches.
Thomas Brinley
Thom had noticed the workout room in passing a few days earlier and made a mental note to return, but it had slipped his mind between one thing and another. However, on his way to the cafeteria, he had again noticed the room and, deciding food could wait, wandered over and peek inside.

He was not disappointed. The array of different machines was more than he was used to, and much more than he needed to keep in shape, what with his soccer and all. But the room was air conditioned, had only one inhabitant at present, and would serve for a good workout before lunch.

Waving slightly in greeting to Rex who he recognized from the soccer match, he closed the door behind him and dropped his customary soccer ball on the floor near the door, beginning a series of stretches of his own. "Afternoon. Hope y'don't mind if I'm 'ere too?"
Rex Vadnais
Rex heaved a couple times as he finished his set and placed the weights back down on the rack in front of him. He spied a man enter through the workout room's door and smiled welcomingly. "Hey, man. Thom is it?" Rex wasn't the greatest with names but all of the shouting from the soccer match had imprinted the name in his mind. "Oh, and I don't care. Help yourself!" Rex stood with his arms at his side to give them a nice little rest before starting on a new set. It was always better to workout with company. "Y'look to be sporting a couple new scales." Rex mentioned off-handedly.
Thomas Brinley
"Mhm," he replied absently, quickly running through a few more stretches before deciding they were a lost cause and stepping over to a second rack of weights. "You're...Rex, yes?" he attempted, searching his memory. That seemed about right. It was hard to tell who was who given the madness of the soccer game, but there had only been four men, including himself, and he knew two of them. Rex had to be the third.

"Scales." Thom wrinkled his nose, turning his back on Rex and picking out a couple of weights. "Lovely, aren't they?" he replied sarcastically. "Just what I always wanted. T'lose my 'air an' start picturin' m' football as dinner."
Rex Vadnais
Rex smiled but stayed looking straight ahead into the mirror in front of him to keep good posture. "That's right. Rex Vadnais, nice to officially meet you." There was a difference between introducing yourself politely and getting to know someone by pulling a rabid squirrel off of them in a brawl.

"Beh, I don't think there's many people in the world that would ask to have this fate willingly. Like, you look like a cool guy, I bet you had a good life going for you back on the mainland." Of course he did, idiot. He was a professional soccer player. Don't bring up the past. Rex huffed a little, signs of strain showed in the pace of each repetition. "Well, I figure that if you just don't worry about it... things won't seem so bad." His tail swayed gently behind him, also slightly tense from the work his body was doing. "Where y'from?"
Thomas Brinley
"Thomas Brinley," he countered, cracking a grin. "Though I do prefer Thom." Ah yes, he remembered now. Not only had Rex done acceptionally well playing for Ambrose, but had effectively rescued Thom from Antony--and, he thought, warned him of Kaveri. Damn women.

"Good life, I would say, is a superb understatement." His grin faded, and he focused his attention on the weights in either hand. "An' it's hard not t'worry when I'll be losin' the ability t'walk. You're, what, a lion? That, I could live with."
Rex Vadnais
Rex put the weights down once again with the completion of another set. He sighed, shook his arms, and placed on his hips.

"Not so great back there then? Heh, you're not alone." Rex sighed as memories of his old apartment, job, and co-workers returned to his mind for the first time in several days. Of course there was also the occasional visits to the cemetery. "Wait, just because you're a reptile doesn't necessarily mean that you're a snake... or did someone tell you?" Rex had heard stories of those nasty doctors slipping in their animal at the most inconvenient times. "And yeah, we figure a lion is the only thing I could be. I managed to get off luckier than alot of the others I've met around the island." He shrug and picked up slightly heavier weights for his last few sets.
Thomas Brinley
"Oh no," he quickly assured Rex, laughing bitterly and finally setting down the weights. "Life back home was wonderful. Mind, just 'ad a flat in London, but I dare say I'm worth a good few million by now. Football pays bloody well as a career, an' you 'ardly take it as a job. Between practices we were pretty much free to our own. Toss in th' occasional rock climbin', parasail," he gestured vaguely at nothing in particular, chuckling. "Ahh, it was fun. But 'ere?"

He shook his head, smile fading, then glanced back towards Rex. "Oh, I am." Taking a step closer, he propped one foot up on the rack of weights, jabbing a finger down towards his toes--or lack thereof. "Already goin'. You're damn lucky t'be what y' are."
Rex Vadnais
Wide-eyed, Rex listened to the story of Thom's previous life. "Wow, well never mind then," He said frankly, "That's pretty amazing. But if you had it so well there then how did you end up on this stupid rock? They trick you? Or was it an accident like me?"

This guy was young, handsome, rich and famous. Rex was... young. Perhaps handsome in the right eyes. But that's about it. He felt so incredibly unaccomplished with his life, and now that he was stuck on the island in the middle of who-knows-where there was no way he could ever make up for lost time. Why wasn't he able to make something out of himself and his life back home? Was he just off on the wrong foot? Was he inches away from success in that stupid restaurant? Or was he simply destined to come here so God never even planned for him to get big to begin with? All of these questions troubled Rex's mind as so many had before them since his arrival on the island. He tried his hardest to look at the positive, stay optimistic, but with a reknown 'football' player here smakcing reality in his face Rex couldn't help but feel a bit put down. Things were incomplete, something was missing.

He sighed again, "Yeah... lucky..." He spaced out, eyes set on Thom's foot even though he wasn't even paying attention to the lack of toes.
Thomas Brinley
"T' be honest, I'm not completely sure," he sighed, returning his malformed foot to the ground. "As far as I can piece t'gether, there was an accident. Bus wrecked, I think. But I can't remember much of that, an' by th' time I woke I was already 'ere in my duplex. Only 'ad a concussion, got over it in a few days.. Still 'aven't learned what 'appened to th' rest of th' team."

He paused, momentarily falling silent. He hadn't thought much on the wreck, really, choosing to shove it from his mind. It couldn't have been that serious if all he received was a concussion, but how would they have been able to pull off his disappearance otherwise? Surely, if he was the only one to perish, his parents--or team--would have demanded a body? If it was bad enough that he may have been unrecognizable, that they could have substituted someone else... He shook his head, shoving the thoughts away, and again sighed. "Y' don't know what you 'ave 'til it's gone."
Rex Vadnais
This man sure had an interesting life story. What a remarkable life to lead. "That's terrifying! Was the crash that bad? Aren't you worried for your teammates?!" With every team that Rex had been on, the others there with you practically became your family. Your brothers. He could only imagine that degree greatly intensified when it came to professional sports. If Rex was in Thom's situation there would be no way he could stop worrying about his friends.

The last thing Thom said bounced around his head, a phrase he'd heard several times before. You never know what you have until it's gone. He could see how this was quite an applicable statement in Thom's life, but when put to his own things didn't match up. Rex always knew what his parents did was bad, though he was defenseless against their dominance. Almost as if it was an analogy to the island. The labtechs were Rex's new parents, doing bad things on the upfront and keeping the 'children' in a position where nothing could be done. Or Julie, for instance; he loved her, he knew what he had, he realized his fortune with her. Though that all came crashing down around him. It really was a circumstantial phrase.
Thomas Brinley
"Not really, I only remember a swerve, wasn't much time t'be afraid." He shrugged, taking a seat on a conveniently placed bench. "I've no idea 'ow bad it was, an' I prefer t' think they've made it through just fine an' are presently winnin' th' Cup." A vague memory of his dream from the night he changed floated back, but again he shoved it away. "I s'pose I'll learn f'sure if Duvert ever gets back t'me with a tape."
Rex Vadnais
He sat down on a work bench across the way from Thom, dabbing his forehead with his shirt and taking a couple more sips from his water bottle before putting it out before him, offering a drink to the Brit.

"Yeah, one of the things I miss alot here on the island is watching things like football and basketball..." He paused, remembering earlier in the conversation, "Wait, did you say you rock climb? I climbed a lot in highschool, our gym had a wall there for us to practice on and everything. I bet if we could get some equipment from the labs there'd be a few good places for a climb on the mountain! If you're ever up for I'm here for yeh. I just love sports like that."
Thomas Brinley
Thom gladly accepted the water bottle, twisting the cap off and talking a long drink himself before replacing the cap and setting the bottle on the bench beside him. "Was never much of a basketball fan," he replied absently, then blinked, cocking his head to the side. "I did. Never did much in school mind." Grinning, he chuckled softly. "Used t'climb bridges an' whatnot back in highschool t' terrify m' parents. Aaron an' I--" He paused, grin fading, then cleared his throat before continuing. "We switched t'mountains once we could afford t' get there. I'd be 'appy t' head up for a climb if we could get some equipment. Or even if we can't. Give th' doctors a shock t'watch precious subjects climbin' sheer rock, eh?"
Rex Vadnais
Rex chuckled at the image of the doctors flipping their lid in the labs because one of the subjects was about to kill themself on a rambunctious rock clomb. "Yeah that'll be a real way to give 'em a run for their money. Though knowing the rich psychos we've got running this place I bet they'd get a helicopter out there stat... there's only one way to find out for sure though." He wry and devilish smile curled the lion's black lips. Maybe this could be a bit more fun than he suspected.
Thomas Brinley
He grinned a reply, scooping up the bottle and taking another sip before replacing the lid and passing it back to Rex. "We'll 'ave t' go soon, 'owever. B'fore m' next change. I'm sure I won't be able t' climb...well after it." He paused, though he didn't seem terribly bothered by the thought. For the time, at least, he had accepted his fate. ...Once it happened, things might play out differently.

"Any'ow, f' now I'm goin' to 'ead to th' cafeteria. Th' snake gets cranky if I don't eat." He rolled his eyes, rising to his feet. "Care t' join me?"
Rex Vadnais
"Yeah, I have no idea how this kitty will do with heights. I think that most lions are used to lowland, like the savannah. Oh well, if I fall at least I know I'll land on my feet." Rex laughed, grabbed his waterbottle and headed for the door. "And some food sounds great. I haven't eaten in a few hours."
Thomas Brinley
"I know next t'nothin' about snakes," Thom laughed. "I should probably ask exactly what I am just t'look up on what t' expect an' all."

Following Rex out the door, he started for the cafeteria, brightening up considerably with the promise of a meal. "Lovely. I 'aven't eaten since yesterday."
Rex Vadnais
The two walked down the empty halls of the Town Hall until they entered the cafeteria door. "This whole building has sure gotten alot bigger since I've been here." There had been constuction like mad and certainly lots of remodelling had been finished throughout the island. He could only imagine the heaps of cash Moreau laid down to make this place the quality it is.

"I'm sure finding out the exact species of the animal would help you out alot. Thankfully lions are pretty generic. There aren't many, if any, differnet species. They're all just slightly different depending upon where the pride is as a whole. I know that the entertainment room has all sorts of books on just about any animal you can imagine. I bet that's a good place for you to start." Rex couldn't help but wonder how much of his humanity he'd lose. In the end would he just be a completely normal lion with absolutely no memory of being human? Enveloped in his animalistic instincts and left to lead a lonely a prideless life? Sure, he'd developed into quite a catlike being... but so far he'd kept the majority of his own common sense and human knowledge. Only time would tell...
Thomas Brinley
"One snake's as good as th' next," he replied absently, immediately stepping over to the buffet. Grabbing a tray and a plate, he glanced over the assortment a food...then again looked over the variety, frowning faintly. And quite suddenly, he didn't have much of an appetite. "But I suppose there are some differences. I'll 'ave t'look around th' entertainment room, then. Per'aps I can figure out what I am without contactin' Duvert."
Rex Vadnais
Rex didn't need to stop to think about what he had a hankerin' for. MEAT was at the top of his list. He bee-lined straight to the carnivore section of the cafeteria and piled his plate high with an array of different meat dishes, humming a happy little tune as he set his plate down at the nearest table and got a drink.

"Yeah, maybe you could just figure out what ind of snake it is by the markings on that tail of yours. Can't be too far off from something in one of those books." He returned to their table, said a quick prayer, then sunk his fangs into a piece of steak. Delicious.
Thomas Brinley
After a short while of hovering at the buffet, Thom finally fixed himself a plate. As with Rex's, it was composed primarily of meat, though he slipped in a few vegetables as well before retrieving a drink of his own and retreating back to the table.

He took a seat across from Rex, who had already begun eating, and, lifting his fork, lazily sliced a hamburger pattie into pieces before stabbing one bite and eyeing it. He was hungry. He was very hungry. But this...wasn't what he wanted. "It's a possibility. I expect they'd pick somethin' relatively well known though, yes? No sense goin' to th' trouble of some rare snake when there're common ones all about an' much easier t' reach."
Rex Vadnais
Rex washed down his large bite with a sip of juice and gave his two cents on what Thom had speculated. "I dunno... there's alot of animals on the island that you wouldn't exactly expect to see. I mean, yeah, a lion is pretty generic and dull. But Awen is a manta ray, and that Joli chick is a komodo dragon, Nita is a red panda, half of those I wouldn't really imagine to see on this island... or at least not for a while. Not until the labs ran out of ideas for animals to use." He shrugged and took another large bite of his meal, "Not to mention I think it'd be cooler to have a rare or exotic animal. Some of those guys have some seriously weird attribute. Cool, but weird. I mean, you could go around saying 'Well I have the rare and elusive suchandsuch' and everyone would think that you were just so cool because the animal you were turning into is just awesome." He paused. Rex realized he was just sounding like an idiot and ranting again.

"...nevermind." He took another bite of steak and pretended like that never happened.
Thomas Brinley
"Well, yes an' no," Thom replied, still pondering his untouched bite of meat and surprisingly unphased by Rex's 'rant'. "True, those're more exotic. But everyone's 'eard of 'em, aye? They're not everyday, but they're well know. Meanwhile, there're thousands of different species of snakes, many of which I'm sure next t' no one's 'eard of b'fore. I doubt th' staff'd go to th' trouble of trackin' down somethin' like that when they could grab somethin' more common an' more well known with ease, yes?"
Rex Vadnais
Rex cleared his throat and sat tall in his seat, recovering his composure before continuing in the conversation. "Ahh, well in that case, yeah, it makes sense. I don't think that the doctors would do anything terribly unheard of... like some weird blind deep-sea crab or something like that. That's just senseless." Rex just ate over his words, hoping that would fill in the empty pauses in his theory since he realized what Thom had been getting at was true all along. Get with it, Rex. WAKE UP!
Thomas Brinley
He grinned, waving his fork towards Rex in an 'I told you so' manner. "Well there y'go. So, on that note, I should be somethin' fairly obvious if I look in th' right place. Though those markin's aren't all that recognizable... But all th' same. My theory wins." His mind finally elsewhere, he popped the bite of hamburger into his mouth and, on instinct, swallowed it whole.

...Promptly choking as the large bite lodged in his throat, hand dropping his fork and rising instead to hold his neck.
Rex Vadnais
"Yeah yeah, you win." Rex looked to his plate and mock sighed in defeat. He stared off into his plate to continue the game he was playing, though that caused him to not even notice that the man was choking until his fork clattered to the floor and gasping sounds could be heard from the commotion from across the table. "What th-?"

The realization hit him hard. Thom was choking!

Rex quickly planted one hand on the table and swung his body across as if it were a vault. Those gymnastics days actually came in handy for once. Thinking quickly, he pulled Thom out of his seat, wrapped his arms around Thom's stomach with a balled fist, then pumped his hand up and under into Thom's ribcage. He'd only done the heimlich maneuver a couple times before on some careless friends. Thankfully he knew the proper form, the only problem was would it actually work for him this time around. "Crap, Thom, spit it up!"
Thomas Brinley
He couldn't breathe. He couldn't breathe. Head bowed slightly as he fought for air, he hardly realized Rex had even moved until the man tugged him out of his chair and attempted to force the bite of hamburger back up his throat. But that was ridiculous, he argued with himself, hand falling from his throat. This piece of meat was absolutely miniscule compared to what he should be eating!

Even while common sense told him that Rex was doing best, in the time of desperation the cobra argued differently. Shoving Rex away, he stumbled forward, one hand falling to brace himself against the table while the other returned to his throat as he desperately attempted to swallow.
Rex Vadnais
"You just don't want to give that thing up, do you?" Giving him water to wash it down wouldn't do the trick judging by how badly the man was choking. Rex would just have to keep at it until the guy hacked it out or passed out. Thankfully the islander's medical office wasn't far away from the cafeteria in the town hall.

The lion inside him was freaking out and in the end only made things worse. In order to make him stop writhing all he wanted to do was snap Thom's neck. The lion pounced with a wild roar, claws barred and flying straight for Thom's tender neck. His paws flew over Thom's shoulders and his body weight nearly caused the two to topple onto the table. With a swift swing of the neck and a rabid look in Rex's eyes he brought his fangs down straight for the jugular--

"NO!" Rex yelled, regaining his self control and shaking the lion's instinct from his mind. He switched his arms from over Thom's shoulders to back under his arms, balled his fist, and gave the heimlich a couple last tough thrusts. Thom's time was running out, and if it didn't work this time...
Zachary Bloodstone
Zach had walked into the cafeteria almost mechanically. It was habit. Go in, get food, eat it quickly, and leave. Most of the time it was easy to ignore the other people who were in there.

This was not one of those times.

After standing and staring for several moments longer than was considered polite, he inched back toward the door. He could get food later. Much later. He wasn't going to stick around for Rex and the other man's lewd public show.

Quietly, he mumbled, "I, um, I'll leave you two alone." With that, he flung himself out of the cafeteria.
Thomas Brinley
Several minutes, several seconds; whatever the case, Thom was a fair shade of blue by this time. The cobra was absolutely furious at the interruption to its meal, and likely would have whirled around to strike at the lion in response had not it been half strangled by its own meal. Determined to finish its meal, it tucked its normally pointless arms between its torso and Rex's arms, effectively blocking the attempts to force away the hamburger bite.

And then the sounds of someone running and the door slamming distracted it, and in that brief instant Thom's thoughts returned clearly once more. He freed his arms, allowing Rex the ability to work properly, and only seconds later heaved a deep breath as the hamburger piece fell to the floor. Falling still, he allowed himself another few deep breaths, regaining some of his normal color, then chuckled breathlessly. "..'Ave t'remember t'chew next time.."
Rex Vadnais
Rex fought with Thom for quite some time, "Stop it! I'm saving your life here!" before he got distracted by the random appearance of a certain someone across the room.

That someone had grown copious more scales, regenerated an arm, and gained a beastly tail to match his gruesome horns. Zach. Rex sneered, baring his sharp fangs as the man retreated from the cafeteria like he had retreated from the fight on the beach. That man was a jerk. A wimp. A coward. With Rex's pent up anger he gave Thom one final heave to the stomach, then released his grip as he saw the slimey hunk of hamburger fall to the ground with a splat.

Rex panted, worn from adrenaline and beating the crap out of Thom. "Yeah, chewing is a good idea." He pulled out the seat for Thom to sit down on to regain his breath and Rex pulled up the one next to him. "Sorry if that hurt... but... you could've died... and I don't think that'd be a very nice addition to either of our days."
Thomas Brinley
Thom gratefully accepted the chair, sinking down on it and reaching over to retrieve his glass of water. Water was water, and water it would always be. It was safe enough. After downing half the glass, he set it back down and waved away Rex's apology, shaking his head. "Perfectly understandable. An' thank you. Good thing y' came along, eh?" He cracked a grin, finally breathing normally once more, and glanced over towards the door. "Did someone else come in?"
Rex Vadnais
Rex blushed a little, unsure if the man even realized he tried to rip out his throat while poor Thom was choking to death. At least that would've solved the little hamburger problem, now wouldn't it?

"Yeah... Zach walked in. Saw you choking, and walked out. That b-uh..." He stopped himself short of saying the word 'b*****d', Rex only cussed when something really bad happened. Like when Amaya collapsed after changing in the middle of the jungle during a rainstorm, that was a moment worthy of cussing. Not to mention Rex was angry at Zach, but still felt as though he should be the bigger man and appologize to mend their bad blood.
Thomas Brinley
Zach, Zach... Thom didn't think he had met this 'Zach' yet. "Terribly thoughtful of him, I'm sure," Thom replied dryly, frowning towards the door. Scooping up his glass, he down the rest of the water, then climbed somewhat shakily for his feet. "I'm goin' to 'ead back t' my duplex, I think. Don't 'ave much appetite after that, y'know. Thanks again for your 'elp." Nodding to Rex, he picked up the tray and carried it over to be cleaned, then started for the door. "I'm in duplex 45 if y'need anythin'," he added, then slipped outside and was off.
Rex Vadnais
"Yeah, I don't really have one either." He, too, came to his feet and cleared his dishes to the kitchen in the back. "I'm in 35 if you ever need any help as well. I'm sure I'll see you around bud." He was tired and just hit his decline from the rush rather quickly. Rex fumbled home to his duplex and flopped on his bed.

Falling For You ;D
Meeting Natsumi

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsuimi wandered towards the stairway, her little bag of garbage in her off hand... hiding out in ones room did eventually lead to alot of trash. Plus it was time to get out again... And she still had a job to do, wether her empoyers were turning her into a mutant creature or not.

Her eyes traied down over the vauge pudge of her stomach, which she frowned at... Not that she didn't adore her child, but the fact that it was starting to become visible was the part she was unhappy with. Though in reality it was hardly noticable, her view did make a more drastic change and she knew what that stomach would have looked like if there hadn't been something in there. Ofcourse she had more drastic changes to worry about... scales and a tail... That was an easy one, but she had never been a big fan of reptiles... But what on earth had happend to her feet was a mystery to her.

Natsumi was so preocupied in her thoughs that she forgot about the tiny dip in one of the steps. It was just a tiny nitch, but Natsumi had aquired just the right step to catch her foot in it and knock herself off balance. "Eee!" she gave a tiny shreik as she started to fall... Eyes clenching shut. This was going to hurt...

Thomas Brinley
It was a boring, uneventful day. Mostly by Thom's choice. Rather than go off to explore the island, he had remained lurking infront of his own duplex, amusing himself with kicking his soccer ball against the duplex wall. He had been thrilled to discover that the glass of his window refused to break, and had taken full advantage of this trait, punting one soccer ball after another at the wall and responding to each return bound as the angle demanded.

It had never occurred to him that someone might live upstairs. Thus, when he heard a door close over the thuds of his soccer ball, he immediately lost interest in his game. Leaving the ball where it fell, he peeked around towards the staircase, quirking a brow at the woman on her way down. ...And then she tripped, and Thom stepped up to meet her, one hand catching himself on the railing while the other arm rescued her from her fall, drawing her to his side. "Are you all right?"

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsumi's eyes fluttered open, looking at her apparent saviour with some confusion. She had been expecting the pain of falling down 4 flights of stairs, not a warm embrace by some guy...

She froze at that thought, flushing lightly before shoving herself away from the stranger. What would someoen think of her if they had stumbled apon her just leaning all over a guy? But he did save her... She quickly bowed her head, hands folding infront of her. "I am sorry." she fumbled out, looking more embaressed for possibly insulting him. She lifted her head slowly, taking a few steps closer to rid that 'o noes a killer' distance she had created. "I was not paying attention..." she gave a sheepish smile, "I am fine... Thankyou. I did not hurt you did I?" She frowned at him curiously, remembering the time someone had fallen on her... but then again they had been bigger than she was.

Her attention was caught from a tiny crunch on the floor, eyes moving down towards the sound... "Aa!" she squeaked in suprise, finding her bag of trash hadn't been saved as she had been and was now making a smelly waterfall down the stairs.

Thomas Brinley
He released her without complaint, holding up his now-free hand to show he meant no harm. "It's quite alright. Happens t' everyone. And I'm fine," he assured her, grinning wryly. As if this little thing could hurt him, even if she had falling completely down the stairs and landed sprawled atop him.

Thom took a small step back, more to make her more comfortable than anything, but grimaced as his foot landed on something coarse and slimey. A glance down informed him that not only was he standing in trash, but the falling bag had effectively coated his feet in it. Disgusted, he wrinkled his nose, shaking off one foot and carefully stepping to avoid as much garbage as possible. "Ah, no worries. We'll get that cleaned up.."

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsumi nodded, flushing as she knelt to grab the back and start picking up the nastey mess... Some of this stuff was a week old, and the results weren't pleasing. One would notice the assortment of the odder foods served in the cafeteria, things mixed together though it was unsure wether that happend before or after being thrown away. But the poor girl had been experiencing massive cnages in cravings.. first i'd be bugs, then fish, then carrots, then ketsup, then icecream, and then various mizes of the above. Ofcourse, the bugs craving had been virtually ignored by being dubbed far too gross no matter how much her stomach said otherwise.

As she tried to scoup the large part of the mess back into the bag, vaugly wondering why on earth she hadn't tied it, she spotted the strange markings the man had. Just like hers. She was almost excited to see them, everyone she had met had fur, and most people she saw had the same. As soon as she realized she was staring she, once again, flushed and tried to explain "Those. You have.." she paused, buisness school never had predicted she would need use of the word scales "Like Uroko..." She shoved something into the bag, pointing to her own arms. "Uhm. This."

Thomas Brinley
Thom was not at all pleased by the stinking mess dripping along his bare feet and would have very much liked to retreat to his duplex and find something with which to clean them. However, he felt obligated to stay and help clean up the assorted goop covering the stairs and, stepping down a couple of stairs, began gathering the trash in that area. It would have been rude to just walk off, even if he had kept her from falling. And, as she was his upstairs neighbor, it would probably prove beneficial to him to stay on her good side.

Hands full of garbage, he glanced up when she spoke, eyeing her curiously as she searched for the word. As he followed her point to her own scales, recognition dawned and, nodding, he straightened up, reaching forward to replaced the garbage in the bag. "Scales? I do, unfortunately. Turnin' t'some kind of snake, I'd wager. D'you know what you'll be?"

Natsumi Tanaka
She quickly held the bag foreward and open for him to dump his pile of trash. Thankfully it had just been a medium sized trashcan, instead of the full ones. The biggest problem was the various things that had liquified... She was careful of her step so she didn't send herself down the stairs again. "Scales..." She repleateed trying to remember the word as sh ewas sure she would need it later. "No I don't...There is something strange on my feet though." Scales were obviously some sort of reptile, however webbing was another story... Though said webbing was carefully tucked inside her shoes.

As the few last bits of trash were stuffed inside the bag, Natsumi tied the top shut and peered over her now fairly sticky and uncomfortable hands. "I am sorry for being such trouble. My duplex is just up there if you would like to wash as well..."

Thomas Brinley
Chuckling bitterly, Thom bent to retrieve a few larger goops of god-knows-what, dropping them in the bag as well before straightening up and attempting to flick the excess off his hands. "Well, as long as you've still got toes, I'd say you'll be fine."

However, his smile returned somewhat with the offer, though he shook his head. "No trouble, I assure you. An', ah, I wouldn't want t'get...goop on your floor." He grinned, shifting one foot out of the trail of sludge.

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsumi smiled a bit, wether he was joking or not it was true. "Yes." She did have it a bit easy... Well then again, he still had his toes for the moment, and there was the chance she was going snake the same as him.. Somehow she doubted it.

She quickly shook her head, "No, please..." She paused, not quite noticing the fact she had basically said no please get goop on my floor. "It is my fault... and... It would be easy to clean, unless there is somewhere better?"

There was a second to wait for a responce, before she let out a startled squeak. one would think she had started to fall down the stairs once more.. however she remained where she stood. "That is rude of me... I am Tanaka, Natsumi... Aa... Natsumi...." she fidgeted some trying to get rid the old name-switch habit.

Thomas Brinley
"If you insist," he agreed, quirking a brow. Hell, he was perfectly happy not to get rotting trash all over his floor. And he could always help her clean up her floor...if he had to. Until then, the company of a pretty woman was much more inviting than resuming kicking a ball at a wall.

At the unexpected squeaked, he stepped up another step, as if expecting to have to catch her again. When she simply apologized, he blinked, then laughed, offering a hand. "Thom Brinley. S'a pleasure t' meet you, Natsumi."

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsumi smiled, taking his hand in hers and giving it a tiny shake. She grimanced when the grime from her hand met the grime on his... "Nice to meet you." she repeated, turning towards the staircase she had just come from. "It's this way. Number 46."

She headed back up the stairs, slipping back through the unlocked door. She had seen no reason to lock it since she was only taking out the trash. She slipped inside, leeaving the door open for him and heading to the bathroom. The duplex was fairly neat, a few photos of old family here and there, two bonsai trees atop the fridge, and everything else seemed to have been carefully tucked away in dwares.

Natsumi started by rinsing her hands in the sink, then moving towards the showers to grab a handcloth and wet it down, holding it out with a smile. "Here."

At the moment, the thoughts of what people might think about her bringing a man into her bathroom eluded her mind... At the moment she was focused on cleaning up the mess she had made.

Thomas Brinley
Ah yes, the muck. He had forgotten for a moment there. He frowned down at his hand as if it had interrupted something important, then, chuckling, followed her up the stairs. As if there was anywhere else to go. The stairs led right to her front door, and there was no other duplex above him.

Remaining otherwise silent, he followed inside, walking awkwardly on the balls of his feet to leave as little gunk on the floor as possible. Upon reaching the bathroom, he dipped his hands beneath the faucet once she was done, then moved to sit on the edge of the tub, acceptng the rag and setting about cleaning his feet. "Thank you."

Natsumi Tanaka
"Mm. Not at all." She nodded, it had been her fault in the first place, and he had even saved her from a painful fall. She knewlt down, digging another cloth out from on of the cabnets. She dampened it, then turned back to the odd colored trail on her floor, smiling to herself at the factthey were only small circles and not full footprints... In a way, that had been sweet of him.

She knelt to the floor, placing both hand's on the cloth she started cleaning, starting at the front of the door and working her way back in a line. Each little circle was easily cleaned with a few back and forth motions except for a few with chocolate icecream apparently in the mix, in which she'd stop and take a few extra seconds with to do a circular motion.

Even with the troubles of chocolate she reached the end of the trail in a minute or so, and if anyone had watched a professional clean before they would have noticed a very simmalar look between Natsumi and them.

She stood, dropping the multicolored cloth in the sink and starting to rinse it out as well. The whole thing seemed like some common occurance to her, as if every day she spilt trash down stairs and invited a man inside her room to clean off his happenly bare feet. But really, she had just been used to cleaning the shrine she lived at.. offhand things when people had tracked all sorts of mud inside... and a shrine intrance caked in mud was never appealing to a tourist.

Once that task was done she looked back to Thom to see if he finished what he had been doing, looking as though she may have forgotten about him even being there while she was cleaning.
It didn't take a moment or two before something dawned on her... She was alone, with a man, in her room. Natsumi's face flushed as she let out a tiny squeak, staring at him as though a monster had ripped forth from the tub's drain behind him.

She felt her brain spin as she tried to figure out what to do. her thoughts spun. She was technically an adult. And a boy in her room wasn't at all comparable to things like walking around the island naked as a certian someone did. Her logical side reasoned that this was nothing...
On the other hand, at heart she was still just a girl... No matter how much she pretended she was "all grown up" now. And that part of her was screaming that there was a fairly attractive young man in her room and that soon everyone would be assuming bad things and thinking ill of her. The thought of her parents even breifly entered her mind.

She quickly shook her head, covering her face some to hide the blush she could feel rising on her cheeks, deciding to go with the "adult" logical side and simply ignor those childish thoughts.

Thomas Brinley
While she was gone, Thom busied himself with cleaning off his feet. For the first time since his change, he had found a reason to be thankful for his lack of toes: nasty rotting gunk couldn't get between them if he stepped in it. Still, the thought of old horrible germ encrusted garbage coating his feet was enough to make him extra meticulous in his cleaning, especially when one considered the myriad of little cuts on his feet from walking around barefoot. An infection would not bode well.

Thus, he was still cleaning when Natsumi returned, though admittedly nearly complete. However, the perfection of his task would go unfulfilled, for a little squeak from the woman distracted him. Blinking, he looked up, at her expression glancing behind himself as if expecting to find some horrible monster. And so he narrowed his search, eyes scanning the tub area for what might have spooked her. A roach, a spider, something. Certainly not himself.

By the time he returned his eyes to the woman, she was hiding from him, and he wisely made the decision that they should leave the bathroom. Maybe then the ability to speak would return. Setting the rag aside, he rose to his feet, cocking his head at her as if unsure what to make of her behavior. "Ah... Whatsay we 'ead outside? I don't like bein' indoors f' very long. 'Ave you ever played football?" Dumb jock routine. But it was a distraction, at least.

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsumi shuffled to her sink, dropping the dirty cloth inside. She gave a quick rinse of her hands, before looking back at him as he started speaking. "Okay..." outside sounded good, a distraction from the sudden childish reaction she was having would alwyas be good. Football? Aa.. which one was that... the one with the feet, or the one with the pointy ball? She frowned as she tried to remember that breif mention they had about it in class... Nope. Not coming back.

Either way, she shook her head.. she hadn't really played either. Though she'd seen alot of the one involving feet and none of the one with the pointy ball.. "No, I have not." She smiled some as she dried her hands and headed to the door.

Thomas Brinley
"Then I'll 'ave t' teach you." He grinned, leading the way out the door and down the steps, carefully avoiding the remnants of the garbage spill and making a mental note to clean it up himself later that day. Stepping over to his discarded soccer ball, he gave it another kick towards the window, frowning in mild disapproval when again there was no sign of it shattering. He wanted his window, sure, but it was mildly unnerving knowing the glass was unbreakable.

Brushing off these thoughts, he retrieved the ball once more, scooping a toe beneath it and flicking it up into his hands. Returning to Natsumi, he offered it out for her inspection. "Football. Or, y' may know it as soccer."

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsumi followed, doing the same with the trash-bits and the nitch she had tripped on earlier. Bag of trash in hand, and tied this time, so she could dump it on their way out.
She flinched as the ball hit the window, expecting a shatter and another mess... but nothing came. She let out a releived sigh, much oposite to Thom's opinion of the window.

She blinked at the ball, "Sou!" She smiled upon seeing the patternd ball, "Sokka... In Japanese. Soccar?" she repeated the more englishy version of the word, somehow morphing it into a mix of the two. Stumbling mostly on the double cs, and then holding the r a tad too long. "Mn. Football." She smiled, finding that word alot easier than the other.

Thomas Brinley
"Then y' do know of it!" Thom positively beamed, giving the ball a lazy spin on one fingertip and dropping it back to the ground. "I'd thought you must. Bit ridiculous if you 'adn't, eh?"

Stepping forward, he swiped the trash bag from her grip and moved to deposit it on the ground against the wall of the duplex. Returning to the soccer ball, he lightly kicked it over to her, quirking a brow. "So, now that y' know what it is, ever played?"

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsumi smiled, seeming to pick up some of Thom's cheer about the subject. "Yes." she agreed to the latter statement with a bit of a laugh.

She blinked as the trash was taken, "My..." she paused, losing her cheery attitude for a moment, "My old friend. He used to play." she swallowed hard, forcing her smile back as Thom returned. It wasn't hard to catch on that this meant they were going to play. "I have never played... But I know the rules." She bit her lip as the ball rolled over to her, cautiously kicking it back. "Sorry!" she squeaked when it went a bit faster than she had expected, but atleast it had still gone back to the man.

Thomas Brinley
"All of my close friends played," he replied off hand, smile faltering momentarily. However, almost immediately he fixed it back into place, even laughing at her exclamation and easily reclaiming the ball, kicking it back to her at about the same speed she had sent it to him. "It's a start, anyway. Not like we can play a real match with just th' two of us, after all. An' don't worry about kickin' it too 'ard, alright?" he insisted, laughing. "I've 'ad worse."

Natsumi Tanaka
Friends... Her smile stayed, although a bit more sad. She knew better than to ask about them, simply focusing on the game at hand. She nodded to what he said, keeping her eyes on the ball as it returned to her, flipping her foot to the side to stop the ball like she'd seen others do in their games. "Aa!" she piped happilly when the move worked, rather entertained by the simplest things. "It worked!" she cheered aloud to herself, then kicked it back to him, a bit more controlled this time.

Thomas Brinley
"Well done," he praised, amused, and mimiced her motion to stop the ball as it reached him. After sending it back towards her with anoher easy kick, he struck up the conversation once more. Football was a good ice breaker. "'Ow long've you been 'ere, then? I didn't know someone actually lived upstairs."

Natsumi Tanaka
She caught it with her foot again, stumbling some when it tried to roll off to the side and excape her grasp. It was so hard not to just grab it... But that was against the rules, so she held back. Once she was sure she had secured it, she kicked it back, looking a bit more at ease with atleast doing that much. "How long..." she echoed, trying to remember an actual date. "A little over a month..." she was almost suprised at it herself, in a way it seemed to have gone by so fast. And on the other hand, it also seemed to have been the longest month of her life.

Thomas Brinley
"That long?" He seemed just as surprised as she did, stopping the ball with his foot for the moment. "You must've arrived shortly after I did. I'm surprised we 'aven't met b'fore." He paused, watching her thoughtfully, then chuckled and snapped back to the present, punting the ball so that it would pass a good few feet to her side. "Let's make this a bit more interesting."

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsumi nodded in agreement, "I am too.." it really was odd that they lived right next to eachother and neither had noticed. Bad timing, she guessed. She was caugh toff-guard by the movement of the ball, only noticing it before it was too late and starting to pass her. She squeaked, running after it, catching up when the duplex wall stopped it. "O-Okay!" she responded, slightly preoccupied with how to get the ball away from the wall without using her hands. Those were the rules afterall, no hands. With her arms out to her side for balance, she stood on one foot using hte other to try and get behind the ball and pry it out. It worked, sending the ball at a slow roll foreward, in which she was able to get behind it and lightly tap it foreward. She smiled, pleased with herself, then returning her attention to Thom waiting to see if he had any specific instructions before she kicked it back.

Thomas Brinley
He chuckled softly as he bustled off after the ball, lazily shifting from one foot to the other as he watched her plight from where he stood. He laughed aloud as she struggled to retrieve the ball, meaning no harm by the gesture--it was just funny. Poor girl. "You can pick it up if y' need to, Natsumi," he explained once she returned, smiling. "This isn't a real game. We don't even 'ave goals. But we could make it more like a game, if y' wanted?"

Natsumi Tanaka
The fact he had laughed hardly phased her, it was always good to make people laugh after all. "Really?" she looked at her hands, then the ball. Well, even if she could she figured it'd be best to get used to not doing so. "That is okay. I will not use my hands." she smiled, rather enjoying herself. "A real game? I try to get it past you then?" that was the most basic point of the game. Get the ball past the other person.

Without waiting for much of an answere, she scooted the ball to her right, moving with it to give it a good kick, trying to get it past his left side. It wasn't as hard a kick as she could have, but she didn't want to send the ball flying off into god knows where.

Thomas Brinley
"If you insist," he replied with a shrug. If she wanted to play balancing acts trying to get the ball from tight spots, far be it from him to stop her. At her question, he nodded, glancing around for marks they could use as goals. "Yes, that's th' basic id--" Her quick movement caught his attention and, on instinct built from long practice, moved to intercept the ball as it was kicked out to his side.

Capturing it with relative ease, he started towards her carefully dribbling it from foot to foot, challenging her to take it from him with a look only to evade with a quick spin and wind up behind her, walking backwards while dribbling the ball once more. "Come get it."

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsumi laughed a bit as he caught the ball, sure she hadn't gotten it past him.. but she had still caught him off guard enough to interupt his sentance.

She shifted her stance some for better balance when he started for her, expecting something, though not quite sure what. For a second, she thought she coul dhave gotten the ball from him.. but then in a quick movement he was behind her. "Hey!" she piped, spinning around. "Not fair." She grinned, loooking much more at ease than she ever had before.

The thought occured that women shouldn't play sports... The reason she had never played before, but Thom didn't seem to care at all. It was a refreshing release of steryotpyes, which was the main reason she looked so relaxed.

Thomas Brinley
"Ah, but it's perfectly fair!" He argued good naturedly, continuing backwards and away. "I'm supposed t' be gettin' it past you, aren't I? No one said I 'ad t' kick it th' whole way."

Thom flashed a grin in response, pleased that she was finally relaxing and enjoying herself. The poor girl had seemed rather terrified earlier on--or, at least, self conscious and easily embaressed. On an island where people were turning into animals, there was no need whatsoever for that sort of behavior. Much less around a man who spent most of his free time back home challenging friends to make fools of themselves--or vice versa.

Natsumi Tanaka
Well, there wasn't much arguing that logic... So she settled for a simple joking whine. "Mouu... Still..." Without going any further she tried again for the ball, missing once more.

It wasn't hard to lose track of time in their game. A few hours had passed, the crickets were starting up and it seemed as though their light was starting to fade. Natsumi slowed to a stop, looking up as though the rest of the world had just become apparent to her. "Aa, The sun is leaving..." she mumbled, almost to herself as she tried to catch her breath, suprised at just how much time had managed to pass.

Thomas Brinley
Time flies when you're having fun, as the saying goes. The same was certainly true for the night. Thom had hardly noticed the fading lightly until Natsumi spoke up. Slightly out of breath himself, he let the soccer ball roll to a halt, pausing in step and glancing around at the darkening sky. "...Huh. What d'you know," he mused aloud.

After a moment he glanced over to Natsumi, grinning only slightly apologetically. "Sorry f' keepin' you."

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsumi averted her gaze from the sky, shaking her head as Thom apologized. "No! I had fun!" she reassured, voice slightly risen from the fact she was still slightly excited from the game and the fact she hadn't fully caught her breath. "Can we play later? And you can teach me that thing..." she gave a little spin to demonstrate what she was talking about... Too many times had he seemed to magically just appear behind her. She gave a light laugh, grinning ear to ear. "Please?" She added in as a second thought, trying to regain her 'lady-like composure' and failing.

Thomas Brinley
"Brilliant!" Grin considerably more genuine, he retrieved the soccer ball and stepped over to her, laughing. "I'd be 'appy t' teach you," he promised, tucking the ball under one arm. "An' we can play whenever you'd like. Lord knows there's nothin' better t' do on this blasted island."

His expression clouded briefly, but his smile soon returned. "Tell y' what, I'm supposed t' be gettin' a tape of th' Football World Cup from th' labs soon. I can hunt y' down when it arrives if you'd like t' watch as well?" It seemed like something she would enjoy, after the hours spent playing that day. And it would be an easy way to explain the 'spin thing'.

Natsumi Tanaka
As they say, laughter's contagious. Natsumi chuckled some as she met him halfway, smile widening as he promised to teach her his fancy move. She clasped her hands together in excitment, "That's great, thankyou!" She paused her merry-making to listen as he spoke once more, she'd heard something of the world cup. She'd never seen it, but it was obviously the big championship thing for football. She quickly nodded, "I would love that." She seemed to have a bit of a skip in her step as they moved back towards their duplexes while talking.

Thomas Brinley
Still chuckling softly, he walked with her back to the foot of the stairs. "Brilliant. I'll let y'know when it shows up, then." He paused, glancing up the stairs towards her duplex, then, chuckling softly once more, gestured her up the stairs with a sweeping wave. "Watch y' step. I'll get rid of that trash for you in th' mornin'."

Natsumi Tanaka
"Okay." she turned to start up the stairs, frowning at the bits of garbage that remained... As though he read her mind he was mentioning it, "Oh no... You don't have to..." She didn't feel there was going to be much stopping it, it just depended on who got there first. So mentally noting she needed to beat him to clean-up duty, she continued her way, giving a wave back to him. "Goodnight!" she called down, then hurrying up the rest of the stairs.. eager to get that shower that seemed to be calling to her after the game of football.

Thomas Brinley
"I 'ave t' take out my own anyway. It's no trouble," he insisted, shaking his head. Once she reached the top of the stairs, he returned the wave, echoing her good night before heading into his own duplex for a shower of his own before bed.

There's a Monster Behind You
Natsumi is...pregnant?

Thomas Brinley
Islands were bloody boring as hell. It had been a good couple of weeks since Thom had seen, well...anyone at all, and it was driving him absolutely batty. He was quickly running out of ways to amuse himself. One could only kick a soccer ball at the wall for so long. The beach got old when there was no one else around, and he had agreed not to attempt rock climbing until he and Rex had managed to acquire some safety gear.

And that left...not much. He was a very social person by nature. Admittedly, back home most of that socializing had been with the team, but that was socializing nonetheless. He was almost always in the company of someone or other at home. On the island? There were very few people who he didn't expect a 'Dickhead' from, and he hadn't been able to track any of those down.

...BUT--and somehow this thought hadn't occurred to him before hand--there was a someone upstairs! Thrilled by this sudden realization, and feeling rather moronic for having not thought of it sooner, he escaped his horribly dull duplex and raced up the steps to Natsumi's, cheerfully knocking on the door.

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsumi had been settled on her bed, in a comfy pair of shorts and a sleeveless shirt, both working well to excape any form of being hot. She had taken to reading a book while laing on her side, her swell of a baby prevented her from laying on her stomach, and the tail had prevented laying on her back.
But alas, as mid day grew nearer, she became drowsey, and at some point had slipped off into dream land.

A knock on her door ripped her from that world, as she jumped some, quickly rolling off the comfy bed to wander over to her door. Still looking half-asleep, she pulled open the door seeming to wake some when she was met with the face of her friend. "Aa.. Thom." She greeted with a soft smile, completley forgetting her state of dress.

Thomas Brinley
"Natsumi!" He beamed when she opened the door, happy just for the moment of human interactions. Two weeks was far, far too long to not speak to anyone. "I'm sorry if I've interrupted anythin'," he apologized, absently noting her state of dress. "I didn't 'ave anythin' t' do, an' I 'aven't spoken with anyone since... Well, since we last talked, so I thought I'd drop by.."

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsumi shook her head, smile widening when he seemed so excited to see her. "No, nothign at all..." She took a step back and to the side from her door opening it a bit wider to invite him in. "I had only fallen asleep while reading..." She chuckled some, quickly waking up. Atleast she was somewhat of a morning person. "Nothing exciting."

Thomas Brinley
He graciously accepted the invitation, stepping inside with a cheery look around even though the room hadn't changed a bit since his last visit. "More excitin' than what I've been up to, I'm sure. I've never been so bored in all m' life." As he reflected on his last visit, a certain memory came back and he quirked a brow, glancing over his shoulder at her. "I trust I don't 'ave any 'there's a monster b'hind you' stares t' expect t'day, correct?"

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsumi closed the door as he walked in, the fact he was a man and in her room occured to her once more... But atleast now they were friends, so the inital childish embaressment was ebbed. Still there though... The small blush on her face made that more apparent.

Said blush only intensified when he mentioned her previous reaction to him, "Mouu..." she gave a small playful pout. "So mean..." Her pout broke into a smile as she moved to take a seat on her bed, moving the book she'd been reading out of the way. Thom was the only person on the island she felt comfortable teasing, and would probably stay that way. It was like he didn't really expect anything from her... He had even played football with her. Which she found remarkable.

As she reached for the book however, she noticed what she was wearing... And apparently, the monster had poped out of the tub behind Thom again. She looked at him first, to see if he had that same look that Alec had when he saw, then biting her lip she crossed her arms over her stomach, hoping to block it from view.

Thomas Brinley
The blush did not go unnoticed, though he merely laughed at her words. "Not at all! I simply want to be sure it is not a daily occurrance--or, if it is, I want t' be ready for it. Maybe movin' conversations t' my room would forestall it." Chuckling, he stepped over to sit beside her on the bed, reaching past her to inspect the book she had been reading but pausing when he noted the...look.

His smile faded, and he raised a brow. It would be a daily thing, then. However, he soon took notice of her obvious attempts to hide whatever she was hiding, and without so my as a by your leave her reached and took her hands, guiding her arms out of his line of sight. He blinked once, twice, and finally lifted his eyes to hers, though he didn't release his grip on her hands. "...You're pregnant?"

Natsumi Tanaka
She had given a small laugh with him before the whole occurance.. Now, ehr heart was picking up pace when he came at her... Almost as though she knew exactly what he was doing. Nonono
"Aa..." she squeaked in protest as her arms were moved, staring at him nerviously. Her mind was racing.. what would he think? Would he be okay with it... Like nita... Or... would he get mad at her? Think she was horrible?

She flinched when his eyes met hers, finding herself unable to move. For a second she thought she heard something crack when he just flat out said it. She stayed frozen for what seemed like an eternity, before finally speaking in a soft nervious voice "Y-Yes..."

Thomas Brinley
Releasing her hands, he sat back and let his own hands fall to the bed on either side of him, palm down on the mattress. For a long while he was silent, watching her contemplatively and offering not a word of either good or bad. However, he finally relaxed a tad, offering a smile once more. "Well, then, congratulations, I s'pose. When're you due?"

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsumi shifted back as he let go, her hands fell to her lap along her line of sight following. She stayed silent, her own heartbeat seemed to echo in her head through the silence. The all too long and awkward silence.

She bit her lip, debating saying something... But before she could decide on what to say he spoke up. She flinched initially... but, then it clicked. It wasn't bad.. congradulations.
She brought her eyes back to him, smiling cautiously. "I uh... In... December." she swallowed hard. Perhaps the whole pregnancy idea wasn't as bad as she had thought... Or maybe they were just being nice and lieing.

Thomas Brinley
"December," he repeated, nodding absently. It was, what, July? No wonder he hadn't noticed it last time. She was pregnant. He wasn't quite sure what to make of it just yet. It was a good thing, correct? She was going to have a baby... She had the beginnings of a new life for herself on the island all set out. But would the transformations effect the child? At that, would it even survive them?

He cleared his throat, smiling once more and searching for a new topic. For some reason, it felt decidedly awkward sitting alone in a room on a bed beside a pregnant woman, even moreso knowing the child was some other man's. Not that he had ever thought of Natsumi in that sense, but with this newly gleamed knowledge everything felt...off.

It was her age, he decided. She was, what, maybe 20? No on that young should be having a baby. That was all. That was the only reason he was unsettled. Yes. Good. "...What're you reading?" he asked, grabbing hold of the new subject and reaching past her for the book.

Natsumi Tanaka
Hm.. What was that saying she'd heard? The air was so thick you could cut it? Yes, that was it... She beleived that saying applied to this exact moment. "Mm..." she confirmed the month december... Letting it fall into silence there. Part of her wanted to ask if he was mad or thought she was horrible... But the other part very much feared he would tell her yes. So she kept it to herself.

"Hm? Oh!" her smile returned once more at the opportunity for a topic change. With that she pulled the book back over, showing off the cover of the novel "A popular American novel... Harry Potter..." she stumbled on the fictonal boy's name, then frowned at it "It is.. a bit confusing..." She admitted, the names and new words the book seemed to pull out of nowhere were constantly throwing her for a loop. Atleast it was helping her vocabulary...

Thomas Brinley
"Are you really?" Chuckling, he gestured to the book for permission, then lifted it from her lap, lazily flipping through a few pages. "It's originally British, t' be honest, but that's about all I know of it. I've never read it m' self." As well known as it was, the concept of the book, from what he had heard, had never quite appealed to him. He rarely had the patience to sit still and read in recent years especially. When he did, it was various things that had been recommended by friends. Harry Potter was not on that list.

"What's confusin' about it?" Where in some context the phrase could have been taken as in insult, it was clear that he was genuinely curious. True, he hadn't read the book, but he may be able to clear up a few things that didn't relate to the actual plot.

Natsumi Tanaka
"Oh?" Natsumi looked at the book as if it would confirm what he had said... Thoguhs he found it interesting it was British, but popular in America... Hm. "Well..." she leaned over so she could see the book, flipping through a few pages to find the one she had ended on, holding herself with one hand and flipping pages with the other. The ones before had taken a bit of time to figure out, but she had atleast gotten something... Finding the page, she pointed to a few of the words they were using for magic. "This.. and what does it mean by this?" she then moved a bit higher on the page. "Why would this be speaking?"

Thomas Brinley
"Well, this is the American edition," he assured her with a nod. "But the author's British, and th' book originally was." He really didn't see the point of making an 'American' edition. If they could figure out the meanings of simple words, they shouldn't be reading the bloody book. He held the book over for her to flip through it, drawing it closer once she pointed out the section to search for an answer. "Th' words themselves don't mean much. They're spells. Probably latin based t' make more sense or some such. Nothin' y' need t' worry about. Speaking..." He frowned faintly, skimming the page and flipping back to skim the one before it. "I s'pose pictures can talk. With everythin' else these books imply, it wouldn't surprise me. It is fiction, after all."

Natsumi Tanaka
"Oh.." she smiled some, nodding to his explination... Tht made sense, and as long as she didn't have to worry about them then that was good. The whole American edition thing didn't make sense to her either... Moreso on the fact that both spoke english, wasn't it the same language?
Either way, she seemed a bit excited to have her own personal translator. "And isn't a troll a un-pretty woman? How would that be dangerous...?" Speaking of trolls... "Aa. I have another... Even more confusing..." She stood, moving over to a drawer to pull out box. It was brightly colored, looking obviously like a birthday present or some sort. "The books were from my friends." She noted, as she pulled out the last book from the bottum. A rather familiar cover on it. "What is an elves? Or a dwarves... I thought this was a drawer..." She pointed to the thing she had just gotten her box out of "But this moves and speaks..." With that she passed the book to him, looking back at the box when it made a noise.

She peered inside, pulling out a tiny book hardly the size of her hand. "Eh?" she stated aloud, setting the box down to inspect the little book. "I did not see this..." She trailed off as the pages opened, she squinted, trying to make sense of the fleshy blob... Then it clicked. The Thom-monster was back aparntly as she gave a rather loud squeak, fumbling witht eh little book then tossing it in whatever direction she could. Covering her blushing face as it smacked into the wall behind Thom, ending it's journy on her bed. Through mufled hands she started speaking... something. "Aaa! Houtou baka da! Megumi to Ami wa BAKA da!" Apparently she had forgotten Thom was even there for the moment. It was JUST like them to pull something like that...

The front of the little dual colored book read the words "Kama Sutra Pocket Edition."

Thomas Brinley
He chuckled, snapping the book and shaking his head. "In some cases, per'aps, but th' troll books like this mean are monsters. Big deformed people type things. Ugly, smelly, not very bright. T' say someone's a troll means they're like those monsters, which is what people mean when they call women that." His eyes followed her as she moved to retrieve the box of books, and he set Harry Potter aside to inspect the next, smile brightening. "Ahh, I know this one."

What boy hadn't read Lord of the Rings? Admittedly, it had been years since he had picked up one of these books, but they had been some of his favorites growing up. "Elves are another mythical creature. Like people in appearance, but taller, very elegant. An' they 'ave pointed ears. Dwarves are kind of th' opposite. They're short, stocky, big beards. Miners an' metalworkers an' th' like. I'm surprised the 'obbits didn--"

He abruptly fell silent as a small book flew past him, looking up from Lord of the Rings to be greeted by another of those stares. He raised a brow, glancing after the book, and actually jumped slightly as she because rambling in Japanese. Bemused, he leaned over to retrieve the book. A glance at the front cover heralded another long silence, and then he just tossed his head back and laughed.

Natsumi Tanaka
"Aa.." she smiled, releived by the explination. That made more sense... And the word troll did have to come from somewhere, she had just never known where.

She had caught most of the explination on elves and dwarves, but the rest of his comments were lost in the moment.

She squeaked as Thom reached for the book she'd thrown, his presence abruptly came back... "Aa!" Nope, No stopping it... He had the book in his hands. He was looking at it... Her face turned bright red. "Wa... I... My frie--" She was cut off by him.. laughing? She blinked, her face caught between anger, pouting, or embaressment. Not that she was actually mad at her friend's joke... Just a bit flustered... And she could have ran into it at a much better time than this. So she simply stood there, staring at him and trying to figure out what exactly was so funny.

Thomas Brinley
Thom was in fits. Apparently he gotten much more out of Natsumi's friends' joke than the poor girl had. If ever he had had a candid camera moment on the island, this was it. Here she was, Natsumi: soft spoken, innocent, perfect little Japanese girl. But a second glance, and he was sitting on her bed, she had learned to play soccer, she was pregnant, and she was probably the only Islander with the 'Kama Sutra Pocket Edition' in their possession.

Catching her perplexed stare, he simply laughed once more, falling back to lay with his legs hanging off the bed. Picking up the small book, he lazily flipped through a few pages, chuckling all the while, then waved it at her in almost an accusing manner. "It would be th' pregnant woman who owns th' Kama Sutra."

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsumi only flushed more when his laughign restarted itself, then he was.. flipping through it?! She cringed, for whatever reason she didn't want him looking at that... Atleast not in her bed... Oh man, the awkwardness of that only made her blush more, even throwing her heartrate up. He was practically looking at porn right in front of her.

She covered her face when he spoke again, trying to hide the burning blush she could feel was there. "N-No!" She squeaked, her voice hitting a pitch of embaressment. "M-Megumi... She..." She stuttered, almost reluctant to fighting it. It was true she was pregnant, and as such her personal life had been set out for the world to see. But even if she did seem like a slut, she wasn't really... Was she? "Megumi jokes... Like that..." She probably sounded more upset than she actually was, not to mention being pregnant she was much more prone to overreactions from mood swings.

Thomas Brinley
His laughter faded with the woman's reaction, smile soon joining it as she stuttered out a reply. Quickly sitting up, he dropped the book on the floor, thinking it better if it wasn't in sight for the time. "No, no, Natsumi..." Great, he had upset her. He was only teasing! He would never, ever have imagined Natsumi to be in possession of such a book, and her reaction upon finding it only backed up this theory. Especially after she had mentioned that the box of books had been a gift from her friends. The prank had simply amused him. It seemed like something his own friends would pull.

And, in truth, he hadn't been -looking- at the book. ...Just pretending to. And only a few pages. Yup.

Again giving no regard for personal space, he reached up and gently moved her hands from her face, offering a smile. "I didn't mean any offense, I assure you. I was just teasin', all right? I know it's not yours. It's just th' same sort of thing my friends would've pulled on me--and I'd probably laugh at it then as well. C'mon, don't be upset..."

Natsumi Tanaka
She swallowed as he moved forward, looking at him curiously from behind her hands. He was moving closer, moving her hands away from her face... She let him somewhat reluctantly, biting her lip. He wasn't mad? He.. was just laughing at her friends. She could certiantly accept that. A smile broke over her face, "I.. I wasn not upset..." she lied horribly giving a tiny sniff, her eyes had gotten a bit watery in the embaressment, her nose doing something simmalar. "You do not think I am horrible?" It was almost too apparent that she was reluctant in asking, but she wanted to know now... Because it didn't seem like he was.

Thomas Brinley
His smile brightened as hers returned, and with her question he laughed, shaking his head. "Certainly not!" He gave her hands a quick squeeze, then released them and sat back as before to make her more comfortable. "Should I? I've seen no reason to. Long as y' don't call me 'd**k'ead', we're fine." He grinned.

Natsumi Tanaka
She beamed in releif, admitably.. It was a rather funny joke... Megumi knew exactly how she would react to those things, and apparently she had been right. "d**k.. head?" she repeated in confusion. Oh man.. she heard that word somewhere... But where. She looked a bit confused for a moment, before it clicked. And it wasn't somethign she'd learned in school... It had come from one of the boys getting ahold of an Japanese to English dictonary and joking around.

SHe looked a bit disturbed at first... speaking before her mind caught up. "But.. Your head looks nothing like....that."

Her confusion was distracted as her stomach growled, luckally she couldn't blush anymore. Then, undoubtably, it was followed with a little fluttering kick. She jumped, always finding the feeling to be a bit suprising. Her hand automatically fell to her stomach.

Thomas Brinley
Thom watched her for a moment, a strangely restrained expression on his face, but soon he was forced to give in and broke into laughter once more, shaking his head in a disbelieving manner. He laughed once more, though it faded with her little jump and the altered placing of her hand. However, his smile remained, and after a moment he nodded towards the door. "Want t' go get somethin' t' eat?"

Natsumi Tanaka
Natsumi was rather confused as to why he was laughing.. It was true, it didn't. So what was so funny?

But before she could question her stomach had interupted, she gave a nod, when the pregnant stomach wanted to eat there wasn't much denying it. And this was no different, she was just thankful for his offer. "Yes... Please." She moved towards a different drawer, pulling out a sweater. "Uhm.. I will be out in a second." she nodded awkwardly, moving into her bathroom so she could change into the sweater, without the extra heat from a second shirt.

After a moment or two, changing the shirts then fixing her hair again, she returned from the bathroom, moving over to him as if to say 'lead the way.'

Thomas Brinley
He quirked a brow as she retreated to change shirts, but said nothing. As flustered as she had been when he had learned of her pregnancy, it wasn't surprising that she was still trying to hide it from the other islanders. Once she returned, he rose to his feet and, leaving the book where it had fallen, led the way to the door, opening it for her to exit, then closing it behind them both and walking at her side for the cafeteria.

Natsumi glanced around the darkness of the outdoors... Her mind was playing tricks on her, she knew it. Every time the wind blew she felt herself a bit scared something would pop out and attack her... She was vaugly aware that she was over reacting, but the whole incident was still very fresh on her mind. It had only been 3 hours since it happend... and she'd never encountered anything like that before.

And now, here she was, standing outside of Thom's duplex in her pajamas. She stared at the door for a long while, debating wether she should really knock or not... The wind rustled a nearby push, causing her heart to jump into her chest and her fist to rap on the door. With that done, she stood, fidgeting and glancing back every now and then expecting something to be there.
She felt bad and a bit wierd for waking Thom.. But she didn't have the guts to walk all the way to Nita's in the dark... And she didn't want to be alone at the moment. Plus, Thom was fairly reassuring for this matter.

Thom, meanwhile, was comfortable curled up in bed, blissfully asleep for the past couple of hours. If there was one thing the island succeeded in, it was forcing him to rest. There wasn't much else to do once the sun set, which meant a days of early to bed, early to rise. The rest had done him well, loathe as he was to admit that the island had been good for something. Of course, it wasn't doing him any good when there were irritating taps at his door in the middle of the night.

Naturally a light sleeper, the soft knocks were all it took to rouse him. He grimaced, yawned, and cracked an eye to glance towards the door. Surely it wasn't morning already... Still half asleep, and forgetting his lack of shirt because of it, he tossed aside the blanket and slid off the bed, stumbling through the darkened room for the door. "Comin', comin'," he muttered, not that it was loud enough for anyone to hear from outside. He flicked on the light--cursed when it stung his eyes--and, before they had adjusted completely, opened the door, blinking out at the woman. "...Natsumi? Somethin' wrong?"

Guilt. There it was. Not that she had any doubt in her mind that he had been asleep when she knocked, she still felt bad to see that tired expression. "I am sorry to wake you..." Her eyes breifly caught the leck of shirt, getting the tiniest of blushes as she locked her eyes on his. Wandering eyes wasn't polite... Ofcourse, staring hadn't been either. She edged closer, trying not to get too close in the effort. "I could not sleep, and I was kind of scared... so... I..." she trailed off, hoping that had made enough sense. Atleast she was already feeling a bit more comfortable in the companionship of the other person.

"No, no, s'alright," he assured her, only to trail off with a yawn. "I'll be awake in a few minutes, trust me." He wiped his eyes, nodding to show he was listening, then raised a brow, giving her a curious expression. However, he simply gestured her inside. "C'min, then. Make y' self comfortable." He closed the door once she had entered, but instead of returning to the bed, headed towards the bathroom. "Somethin' 'appen t' spook you?"

She moved inside almost as soon as he offered it.. An immediat releif hit her as she entered the duplex. Safe. She let out a tiny sigh, not going too far from Thom, but not standing quite as close as she'd been. Ofcourse when he headed towards the bathroom she turned to find an interesting spot to stare at on the wall. "Mn..." She muttered meekly, "Someone... At the beach.. He had been mad at me." She paused, biting her lip. "Very mad..."

"That's not good," he replied intelligently. Stepping into the bathroom, he turned on the faucet and proceeded to splash water on his face several times, finally turning it off and groping blindly until his hand found a towel. He dried his face, discarded the towel on a rack, and returned to the main room, looking a bit more awake, at the very least. It was a start. "Why would 'e be mad at you? At that, who was it?

She waited for his return, fidgeting idley while doing so. She looked a bit sleepy herself, It was possibly 2 or 3 am by now, she wasn't sure on exacts.
She looked to Thom as he returned, frowning a bit "I.. I did not mean to stare, I just did and then he begain to yell. Anything I had said did not help at all... He only got more mad." she shifted, unhappy with remembering the experience.. but at the same time happy to be able to share it. Like a nightmare... It felt better to tell someone about it. "Then I fell... Nita showed up." she fidgeted, pausing long enough to find herself somewhere to sit. "Zach... I think his name was that."

"Ahhh..." So that was it. Another island freak show sore about his appearance. Somehow that didn't surprise him. Nodding his understanding, he retreated to sit on the edge of the bed, patting the space beside him in a gesture for her to sit as well. "I see.... Lots of th' islanders are pretty touchy about. Can't really blame 'em, I s'pose. I ended up gettin' attacked after a soccer match f' saying someone 'ad big feet a few weeks back," he admitted, frowning faintly at the memory. "Just 'ave to 'ope they're not th' violent type. Good thing Nita stepped in, eh? Can't say I know a Zach, hmm.."
PostPosted: Thu Jul 20, 2006 2:32 am

Natsumi moved to sit next to him, more than eager to take the offer. Though his shirtless body had struck her attention again, the simple need for a companion overrode the teenage anxiety of such things.
She nodded as he spoke... She couldn't blame them either. She was hardly changed at all and it made her nervious about her apperance.

She seemed a bit shocked that someone would attack him, but let it go... She had been around enough men to know not to bother anymore with the subject of being attacked. "Yes.." She nodded with a bit of a smile. She was very very grateful that Nita had showed up. She let the conversation fall silent, wondering if she should really go on... "He.. Said something about hurting people..." she stared at the floor, that had been the intial thing that scared her. Mixing that with his tone and the fact he threw his arms at her like had.

Shaking the thoughts, she yawned into her hand, then folded her hands over her stomach in an almost protective mannor.

"It...wouldn't surprise me," he admitted thoughtfully, lifting a hand to rub his temple. "I've 'eard that shortly before I arrived on th' island, one of the lab staff was attacked. Nearly killed, as I recall. With everyone turnin' into animals, it makes sense that some of th' animal side'd come out. I think... I think th' snake wants me eatin' live food. Don't think I could stomach it, but th' stuff in th' cafeteria just doesn't appeal t'me anymore. As an example." He shrugged, then cracked a smile, letting his hand fall. "No worries, right? I'll make sure no one 'urts your or th' baby." Not that he could really enforce such a claim if she was meeting people like Zach when he wasn' around, but he was tired, so that didn't occur to him.
