Quenda and Vanga settled at a plot on the far edge of the field and set to work. Though Vanga had never harvested Mandrake before, being an Albino he easily mimicked what he saw Quenda doing, and stepped up to the task. Quenda pulled her skirts to the side to work more comfortably and reached forward to grasp one of her mandrake plants firmly by the stalk, right beneath the crown of green leaves that stuck up jauntily from the soil. In her other hand, she readied her spritz bottle and began to squirt the mixture over the leaves until they were well-misted. Vanga readied the burlap bag and the shears and leaned forward over his knees. Quenda made eye contact with her partner, and he nodded, both ready.

With a firm, sudden yank, Quenda pulled the Mandrake plant up from the soil. The instant the twisted body of its roots left the soil it spasmed and writhed, curling its limb-like roots up into its body, and scrunching up its squashed little face. Vanga blinked for a second as the thing squirmed. It was ugly, to be sure, and looked like the images of 'infants' he'd seen in the Library. What a strange, malformed, unready creature to exist. But as Quenda struggled to hold the bottom of its roots steady, he cleared his thoughts and moved in, pinching at one of its lesser limbs and forcing it seperate from the rest. He lifted up his shears and wedging them around the wriggling shoot clamped the shears shut. They bit cleanly through the Mandrake's ginger-like root and the thing let out another hideous shriek that was luckily blocked out by the Headphones clamped tightly over his ears. He deposited the clipping into the burlap sack and stared in horror as the snipped off stub of a root oozed a milky substance. Quenda, catching sight of the look on his normally docile face, smiled reassuringly and nodded her head. "It's alright. It'll be okay. Go on and cut another sample."

As the professor got started with her partner Nadyrr watched a moment to be sure he understood what they were doing before looking to Lucis, "lets head over this direction." he gestures to a spot not that far in the grove, "I am pretty at home out here...so I think I could do either the pulling and holding or the cutting. Which would you rather do?" Nadyrr paused in step to give them time enough to adjust their headphones before they got too much closer to the mandrakes.

Seeing that the professor had gotten started she glanced to Jaenella again, "uhm, maybe we should get started along the edge over there. Lets get our headphones set up and get started." Belwen grinned slightly she was a bit excited about getting to try this.

Tau Team, Odd answers

1. List the differences between a Peacock and a Peahen.

The Peacock is a male Peafowl and the Peahen is a female Peafowl (though the female is sometimes mistakenly called a peacock as well).

3. List five book/movie titles that use the word Phoenix.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, The Flight of the Phoenix, Phoenix and Ashes, Pheonix Rising,The Phoenix Unchained: Book one of The Enduring Flame.

5. Post the Cert of a Cicus Owl owned by an Empyrean.

Archimedes

7. What was Merlin's other (true) name? Emrys

9. Define "Deciduous".

Deciduous means "temporary" or "tending to fall off" (deriving from the Latin word decidere, to fall off) and is typically used in reference to trees or shrubs that lose their leaves seasonally.

11. List six types of weapons traditionally made from wood.
club, tonfa, bo, nunchaku, hanbo, kuwa

13. Illustrate the photosynthesis cycle of a plant.

Plants take in carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil; put them together (in the presence of light energy and chlorophyll) to produce sugar (glucose) and oxygen.

Some of the sugar produced during photosynthesis is used by the plant for its life processes (such as growing and reproducing); the excess is converted mainly to starch and stored in various plant parts which may be used as food by animals and humans.

Oxygen produced during photosynthesis replenishes the oxygen that was used up by living things during respiration. This cycle of photosynthesis and respiration maintains the balance of carbon dioxide and oxygen on earth.

15. What poisons/drugs are sourced from Wormwood? Absinthe

Abacus turned his attention from Lior to watch how the professor and her partner extracted a mandrake root, snapping a picture while Vanga cut it. "Or," Abacus began, looking back at Lior, "We could trade off from root to root? Sprits'n'pull one time, cut the next?"

Team Zeta, Day Four

1. List the differences between a Peacock and a Peahen.
A peacock is the male version of this bird, and is vastly more colorful than the peahen (whose feathers are a less flashy brown in order to blend into her surroundings easier). A peacock also has a massive tail that it fans out behind it when attracting a mate. These feathers are long and green with blue "eyes." The bigger eyes a peacock has, the easier it is to attract a peahen.
A demonstration of the vast differences in color between the male and female can be found here.

Nadyrr smiled slightly listening to Lucis. The being more in touch with ones own essence sounded about right as they got older they became more in touch with...what they were. Nadyrr considered this line of thought a moment and then pushed it away he felt like he was back in Philosophy class. His small smile turned to a grin as he looked to Lucis after his comment about growing quickly, "well seems you filled out pretty well." Nadyrr was just being truthful as he made the statement, he was in awe of quite a few of his classmates and professor's appearance. And while he still apprechiated their appearance he was well past gawking by now.

Nadyrr looked to the bottle of liquid they were to spray and then to the bag before glancing to Lucis, "er...so your definantly taller, so you think your stronger to hold 'em while I cut or...you want me to try? I'm pretty strong but well...not sure how strong you are." As Nadyrr spoke he took time to look around the woods, this place gave him a slight feeling of peace despite the defeaning plants that lay nearby.

Lucis found himself flattered at Nadyrr's apparent admiration, unsure of how to proceed politely. Half a sheepish smile graced his face as he muttered a "Thank you." He was a little stiff without meaning to be, though the thanks was heartfelt; compliments always seemed to disarm him. He took a closer look at Nadyrr, wondering how he'd appear without the enormous volume of clothing hiding his person.

Quenda's instructions brought his mind back to the present. After listening well to them and watching as she harvested hers, he turned to Nadyrr to answer him.
"I think I should definately pull. Not that I doubt you, but I think it's safe to say my muscles are a little more developed," he said, squinting at the leaves poking out of the earth. It all seemed a little surreal. Still, despite how unfamiliar his surroundings and the situation were, he felt no doubt over his ability to succeed in the task at hand. With an easy roll of his shoulders, he followed his partner to the plot he'd chosen, pausing with him to adjust the settings on his headphones before he closed in on their mandrake of choice. He dropped to his knees on either side of it and stopped a moment to slide his bangles up to his upper forearm where they wouldn't get in his way, looking to his partner as he prepared himself. "Are you ready, Nadyrr?"

Lior looked thoughtful as he followed after Abacus, watching as the boy took pictures. "Mm... We can trade off, and see which feels most comfortable to us?" he offered, putting a hand on the other's shoulder. "Let's go start out, eh? Find out what's best." He moved to take hold of the other's hand, leading him towards the plot and lifting his other hand to make sure his headphones were properly adjusted.

Daggart grinned and nodded, looking around. For a long moment, he watched Taevis, tempted to join him in the other's patrol but... he turned back Antigone, "I guess. I pull, you snip?" He stepped forward and knelt down to grasp the leaves that stuck out of the ground. "Where's the spritzer?" He frowned slightly, as he fiddled with the spritzer bag.

---

Kallisto blushed a little and smiled broadly, crossing over so that a Mandrake was between them. "Thank-you." She nodded and dropped into a crouch, "I'll snip, if you want. Or pull. It doesn't matter. " She shrugged and bounced slightly.

---

Astaroth frowned, "Yes, you do. Professora Quenda said to spray it and then tug on it - apparently they're stubborn to pull." This Dariyn seemed rather skittish. It was mildly annoying. Sighing, he brushed his bangs into their proper place as he looked around and spotted Morrow. Noting his movements, his frown deepened slightly. He didn't like being watched... let alone drawn without his permission.

Casting a cold look at Morrow he turned back around, "Shall we then?" He knelt and removed the necessary supplies, testing their movements for a moment as he watched Dariyn. They had a job to do and he'd like to get it done in a swift and efficient manner. Perhaps even explore a little... this Outside was far more intriguing then he initially thought.

Arwen inclined her head to her enthusiastic partner, looking around wearily before choosing an ample plot not too far from the rest of the students. She wasn't in the least bit insulted or otherwise feeling incompetent at her lack of physical strength; indeed, her strength lay elsewhere, more suited for less dangerous circumstances. "Is here sufficient?" she inquired, her voice still quiet.

Fantasy Island of Madagascar!

15. What poisons/drugs are sourced from Wormwood?
Absinthe; can also be used as a tonic, stomachic, febrifuge and anthelmintic.

The youth held out her dainty hands again in askance for the necessary items, a small smile surfacing. She could do this...as long as it didn't take too much longer. The more she thought about Danna and the harvest of the mandrake, the less she thought of her fear and shortcomings. Arwen was just as pleased not to consider her own lacking of nerve in the situation.

Of course, thinking of something other than herself and her fear required stimulation. "How have classes been for you, Danna?" she asked conversationally as they worked. There was no reason she couldn't be civil while doing classwork, right?

Ubel looked surprised as Jakov appeared quite suddenly, stumbling a little, before smiling happily and waving back at the other. "Hullo, Jakov! Good to have you here," he said happily, putting a hand on the other's shoulder. "Are you ready for a surely crazy adventure?"

Ubel was curious about this world that was Outisde... yet, at the same time, he was nervous. He bit his bottom lip as he listened to the Gates opening, stepping out slowly. Pausing beside Grave, he took a deep breath, before smiling softly up at the one. "It's so big," he whispered, then began to walk away, to keep up with his partner and to keep up with Quenda, not wanting to be left alone. He felt so... so lost, so out of his element, in this place. He didn't like it, he was sure.
Jakov grinned with no small amount of enthusiasm. Whether or not he was ready, he was surely willing. "Of course!" was the energetic response he gave as he and Ubel made their way with the group toward their destination. He let out a low whistle as they passed through the gates and into the forest, finding the butterflies flapping about in his stomach a not altogether horrible sensation; the apprehension he felt seemed only to further excite him.

Jakov shivered as they approached the plot, finding the whole scene vaguely creepy. "Cool," he whispered, watching Quenda intruct them and then proceed to harvest one of the ugly plants herself. He felt his stomach roll against his will as she severed the thing's limb. They certainly were gross, but that was awesome as far as he was concerned. A problem was growing in his mind as Jakov thought about the situation in which he found himself; as much as he hated to admit it to himself, he was in no way strong. Approaching a plot, he looked doubtfully back over his shoulder at his partner. Ubel was smaller than he was, even. "So, uh..." he said, chewing his lip. "D'you want to pull, or cut?"

"Um. I can... I can try." Biwa wasn't quite sure she was ready for this hands-on experience, especially as she watched others go about the task. But she retrieved the shears, holding them awkwardly.

--

Yambati had been wondering why his partner hadn't gone looking for him yet. But seeing Emrys walking along alone, he rolled his eyes - of course his partner wouldn't be trying too much - and came over.

"You could have come to find me," he said, perhaps a bit too gruffly. "I'm Yambati. And I'm assuming you're Emrys?"

Ubel trailed after Jakov with a warm smiling, rather enjoying the other's presence and attitude. It was so strange, on the Outside, and he couldn't help but to hope they went back into city rather soon after finishing this harvest.

Speaking of such. The small Melancholic blinked as he watched how things were harvested, then slowly turned his head to meet Jakov's gaze, looking the other over slowly. "This is going to be hilarious, I can assure you," he commented lightly, an amused light in his eyes. "Hm... Which would you prefer to do? I... I can probably do the cutting. If you think you can hold it. Or... the other way. We're both so small... it's going to be very hard!"

Antigone laughed at Daggart's apparent trouble at concentrating upon the task at hand. Taking the bag from him, she lifted out the spray bottle, and smiled. "They're quiet impressive, aren't they?" she said, motioning towards their escort. "I can only imagine what it would be like, to have such strength... Or even to be a three! It seems like I've been a Zero for... Well, forever."

Blayk nodded, and grinned as she wrapped her fingers around the top of the Mandrake. "Well, here goes nothing." A moment too late, she thought about her headphones, and if they were properly adjusted. As she yanked the shrieking plant from it's resting place within the ground, she sighed a sigh of relief as the Choleric realized her headphones were indeed secure. Her muscles rippled slightly as she did so, and her finger was quick on the trigger of the spray bottle.

The Phlegm thought for a few moments, before he picked up the shears and the held the spraying bottle. "If you can hold it still, Kallisto, I'll be happy to subdue it, and take what we need from it."

Grave held his breath as the thing came squirming from the soil. As it writhed against Blayk's hand he could only stare in disgust for a long, silent moment. Then, he remembered his task and reach out to gasp one of the smaller roots waving angrily at the air. Grave felt the thing pulse and flex between his fingers and squeezed tightly so as to not lose his grip. He brought the shears up and pinched the root until the blades cut through and the clipping came away from the body of the mandrake. Grave eyed it, but it did not leap out of his hand or burn his skin. He warily eyed the oozing white sore in the Mandrake's side where he'd cut away one of its tendrils and rolled his shoulders. He toss the clipping into the open burlap sack and bent forward to take another clipping from the vile little thing. "Thanks," he muttered off-hand to Blayk. She was doing a surprisingly good job of holding the squirming thing.

Danna nodded and settled at the plot Arwen had selected. She passed the shears and the bag to Arwen and smiled. Denna sunk to her knees next to the nearest bunch of green leaves and squirted it thoughouly with the spritzer and then seized it around the base of the stalk and pulled. The thing came free fairly easily, and Danna chirped a little giggle of delight in her ease at her task. Her smile fell away from her face as she stared into the face of the thing and felt her stomach roll. She could see its twisted little face scrunched up as if it had been punched into the rest of the root mass. Its toothless mouth stretched wide as it howled inaudible thanks to the headphones. Its multitude of little limbs stretched up towards her hand as if to pry her fingers loose, but they were of varying lengths all too short to reach. Danna swalloed the sour spit on the back of her tongue and focused on not dropping the pitiful, hideous thing. "Please, cut the clippings quickly." Danna whispered hoarsely, trying to tear her eyes from the wretched squashed face. This thing was alive...not alive like a tree or a flower. Alive like an animal, it had a face! Danna felt another wave of nausea swim through her as she caught sight of the shears in Arwen's hand. They were going to lop off the ugly little thing's limbs!

"Just pull?" Cyphr confirmed, his frown slowly faded. "Okay!" Cyphr flopped himself onto his rear and slammed his big sneakers out on either side of one of the plants. "Okay!" He piped again, rubbing his hands together and licking his lips as if about to dig into a plate of very sauced spaghetti. "Yous tell me when..." Cyphr sing-songed, his hands spread on either side of the green shoots of leaves, fat fingers wiggling in anticipation.
