Father B.D. Robo Crush

PostPosted: Wed Jul 12, 2006 2:41 pm

Sweeeet! Father Blood Drench Robo Crush was wondering about the books they were based on... if you like it, I'll go in search of it.

Meanstwhile I'm currently getting into Stranger In A Strange Land by Robert Heinlein. The uncut version, no less! 'Tis good to get back to my sci-fi roots. And finally get what the hell 'grok' means... Damn trekkies confoozlin' me...

Anyhoo, Father Blood Drench Robo Crush had never read any of his stuff, and Heinlen being a purported master of the genre, it was about time. ..plus the cover was pretty. ninja

So my car breaks down on Monday, so I do what I always do when I know I'm going to have to wait and know I won't have the focus to write, I grabbed a book.

A Fistful of Rain by Greg Rucka was remarkable and I read the whole thing before workout that evening. Rucka's prose practicly dares the reader to put the book down, knowing full well that it won't happen. He keeps everything wound incredibly tight with plenty of twists and turns. He's the Hemingway of suspense.

This was his first book after the very successful Atticus Kodiak series and is a stand alone. Rucka's now moved on to wrting novels about Tara Chace from his comic Queen and Country.

It doesn't matter whether you're a fan of his comics or not, he's one of the top suspence novelists working today.

As much my love of the Wheeel of Time has been documented, there is a fantasy series I like more. The Malazan Book of the Fallen. If your definition of dark fantasy is S&M elves, this will shock you. If you thought Helm's Deep was an amazing battle, you will be shocked. This series is a fully-loaded freight train of awesome. The most refreshing part? Not all the main characters survive to the end of one book in the series.

Canadian and British readers can get all six books released so far, while we here in the US are just getting the fourth book. It's a a planned 10 book cycle.

Hate my grandmother's house though I do, there's one good thing about it: I get so much reading done here.

I've read since Sunday:

Jack Kerouac's On the Road
Baroness ORCZY's The Scarlet Pimpernel
David Sedaris' Me Talk Pretty One Day
Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle (nice to see where the name from my favourite venue comes from)

Also, I went to a thrift shop and picked up the following books:

Shakespeare's Hamlet (a play, I know, but it's a stand-a-lone copy, complete with a former theatre geek's changes in the margins)
William Golding's The Lord of the Flies
Upton Sinclair's The Jungle
Karl Marx' Selected WRitings in Sociology & Social Philosophy (I'm no Marxist, but his stuff is really fun to read)
Arthur Miller's The Crucible (see note on Hamlet)
Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court
Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray (reading it now and loving it immensely)

I also picked up Chuck Palahniuk's Invisible Monsters from an actual bookstore.

I'm here until Friday. I aim to finish at least three more books.

I love having friends who are as weird as me. Especially ones who read books they know I'll love and then go, "Here. Read this." So everyone, blame my friend Rodney...and Marty.

Kim Harrison
Dead Witch Walking
The Good, the Bad, and the Undead
Every Which Way But Dead
A Fistfull of Charms (I'll be reading this one as soon a Rodney's finished with it)

Carrie Vaughn
Kitty and the Midnight Hour
Kitty Goes to Washington

I like how Ms. Vaughn shows Kitty "growing up" as a were-wolf instead of her already being badass just because she is one.

Carla Speed McNeil
Finder: King of the Cats

Marty, I hate you in a very loving manner. Thanks for the b-day present. xp heart

Writing tedious books from beyond the graaaaaave! *wiggles fingers in a spooky manner*

Nah, I'm just joshin'. I love The Hobbit. But this is likely to be one of his grown-up books, so expect Waffle with extended periods of Going On A Bit.

Would anyone else be totally bereft of shock to learn that this was something his kids have bashed together to keep the cash rolling in?

Not at all.

Similarly, I won't be shocked when several more Star Wars movies are released after George Lucas dies. Same with Harry Potter books, probably.

I heard the best thing on the radio just now:

"When they figured out that J.K. Rowling was richer than the Queen...you know that didn't go down well at Buck House. I'm sure Her Majesty's at the typewriter as we speak."

I was watching this show on PBS called Gormenghast the other night, and I learned that it's based off of a book series called The Chronicles of Gormenghast.

Before I rush out to find either the DVDs (kinda started watching it in the middle and fell asleep before the end) or the books themselves, has anyone read this or heard of it before?

I didn't really care for it, but by all means give it a try. The TV show was comprised of the first two books, Titus Groan and Gormenghast. The third book is Titus Alone.

I'm finally reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire heart

I'm also reading Steven King's The Gunslinger. It's really weird, but it's so good.

I'd like to say next year, but I wouldn't be surprised if Rowling decided to milk it a little bit more before releasing.
