I turn to Aodakemaru, "There appears to be a little chunk of scalp still attached to that hair and his fingers are covered in soot, if that is what you were referring too. Naturally we will be finding this... Goiketsu, and stopping him?"

Desc returns Aodakemaru's gaze, stares blankly for a second, then shrugs his shoulder. He picks up his naginata and prepares to head to the temple.

The Monastery of White Petals
Action Summary:
For investigating the happenings in the village, instead of simply passing judgement and killing the villagers You each gain 100 experience!
Current situation:
Following the eastern road out of Caotang, you are afforded another spectacular view of the countryside. The road twists up a small hill, overlooking the village, a nearby river, and the wide silk forests that surround Caotang.
At the top of the rise, a building with a wooden wall surrounding it come in clear view. The wooden wall is very tall, but the sounds of a songbird within are audible. The main opening to the temple lies directly ahead - a set of huge, carved oak doors that are currently closed. To the north of the door is a ritual circle for offerings. Seven cherry trees are planted in a circle around a large, smooth stone altar-stone, and white blossoms cover the ground.
As you approach the doors to the temple you notice that to the north the cherry trees nearest the temple are blackened and wilting, their blossoms disfigured. There appears to be something on the altar stone.

Walking over to the altar you notice several sets of footprints in the soft ground. Two sets, that of an adult and that of a small child, appear to go from the temple gate to the altar. Both of the trails end there. The other footprints, about 3 sets, come from the road to the altar, then back to the road.
The stone on which the incense and other offerings have been burnt is strangely scarred with knife blows, and blood stains the ground and cherry blossom petals at the base of the stone. Upon the altar you see three large, unburnt and beautiful Koi scales.

As Salvi investigates the altar, Aodakemaru turns his attentions to the withered cherry blossom trees. He even reaches up and plucks one of the disfigured blossoms to scurtinize in his hands.

The trees and blossom, and your hand, are covered in the same black soot that was on Eojin's hands. The blossom does not appear to be burned though, just strangely deformed.
You do not like the feeling of the soot on your hand at all, as though it's very nature chills your bones.

He drops the sooty petals to fall to the ground, letting them fall as if his hand recoiled from the seemingly innocious petals.
"It's almost like whatever happened here sickened these trees...they're not burnt...."
He tries to determine what could've caused something like this, thinking back though all he's ever read and heard.
((Would that maybe require a knowledge: arcana check, or possibly Knowledge: spirits?))

Desc shuffles around nervously and grips his naginata tightly. "I don't like this one bit," He whispers to himself in nezumi. He walks over to the altar and explains the koi scales. "Hmmm... I wonder what thiz is?"

They appear to be scales from a very large silver carp.
Koi scales would be readily recognizable at to a samurai or wu-jen by sight. Heck, I'd know one if I saw it xp
