Ra laughed as they left the dojo. Kayne really did have guts. Ra sucked in comparison. He had the power to give attitude when pissed off, but he would never joke around with a teacher in such a way. He doubted he could even pull it off if he tried.
"Yeah, just try it." He smirked heading in the direction of the canteen. "Is the canteen good for you? Cheap and close by."

"Cheap always works for me," Kayne smiled following Ra's lead. "You're an only child aren't you?" he asked bluntly, thinking of how non-combative Ra was. Even that night when they fought, Ra really hadn't tried to fight back very much.

"Yeah." He said as they entered the canteen. The food was set up and ready to buy though the large hall itself was almost empty. "I mean I have my cousin, but it's not the same really." He shrugged and surveyed the various counters. "You're really lucky to have a sister, or anyone really. I was pretty lonely as a kid. What makes you ask?"
PostPosted: Fri Apr 14, 2006 3:56 am

"Because you can seriously tell that you've never had to fight," Kayne grinned thinking about all the arguments and shouting matches he and his sister had had growing up. True they were close, but that just meant they more prone to getting under each other's skin.

"Sensei is right you know. You need to learn to speak up more or you'll never get heard and just get walked all over all the time. Where's the Ra who stood up for something he believed in and did something about it back in the cafe?" he asked with a shrug as he reached out for a sandwich and banana.

Ra shrugged again, grabbed a sandwhich, some coke and made his way to the till.
"I don't like conflict." He said fishing some money out of his pocket and paying for the food. "When you grow up surrouded by it in a grand scale it gives you a different prespective on things."

He took slight offence at Kayne's words though he knew he was right. All the problems he had come across already at Aquila were because he didn't speak out, the rocky start to his and Chii's relationship, his arguments with Scarlett, his parents, the psychaiatrist. He needed to be more assertive, he just didn't know how.
"I'm not a wimp." He said slightly defensively, though not angry with Kayne. "I just didn't see the need to try and push things with her." He thought back to the day of the fight, her comment at the door of the PE office. "I wanted to prove Morimoto wrong. I know he bad mouthed me to her." He said with a slight sneer locating a table and sitting down.

Kayne tried to hide his smile as he listened to Ra. He'd struck a nerve. He sympathized with his reasoning, but Kayne hadn't meant for him to suddenly become a hot head like him. Just speak up when he had an opinion on something.

"I never said you were a wimp, mate. The thought never crossed my mind," he said emphatically. If he were honest with himself he'd admit that he admired Ra for keeping a cool head. "All I'm saying is you need to start speaking up for yourself. I won't be around to do it for you all the time," he said with a wink as he sat down across from him.

"Yeah, I know." He said smiling and shaking his head at his own assumptions. Carefully he opened the sandwhich packet and began to pull the slices of ham out. "I'm getting better. I got bullied quite a bit at my last school, it's taking me a while to snap out of victim mode." He gave a smirk at a thought that ran through his mind.

"She said you needed to cool it though too. Maybe if we were one person we'd be perfect." He laughed a little. "You are right though. As stupid as it sounds I think the sly comments but I can't say them. You know why?" He asked taking a bite of his now ham free sandwhich and chewing. "My parents. Pathetic huh? I do all this crap," He gestured to the pile of ham "for them, to stop them getting angry. I re-arrange my whole life to life up to their expectations and you know what? I'm beginning to get sick of it." He fell silent and looked down at the rest of his sandwhich. "Sorry about that."

Kayne had figured as much and had been right about him being the victim of bullying. He opened his own sandwich pack and tucked into it right away, listening closely to Ra's words. An answer had formulated in his head but then Ra's apology stopped him.

"That's what I'm talking about. Right there. What do you have to be sorry for? You had something to say and you said it. Quite well I might add. No candy coating. Straight to the point. I don't wanna hear another apology from you unless I deserve one," Kayne said with a smirk.

"As for your parent issue... Well... I'm not sure I'm the right person to give you adivce. Your parents care too much. My parents... well... they aren't winning any parent of the year awards," he sighed and took another bite.

Ra smiled and was about to apologise yet again before he managed to stop himself. Listening to Kayne speak he nodded.
"That's what has be torn. I want to do my own thing, but they have done so much for me, given me so many oppertunities. I feel like I owe them to become the person they want me to be." He shrugged and ate some more. He didn't want to pry into Kayne's family life, he knew they were pretty similar when it came to keeping their lives private. Then again, Kayne did say he should speak up more.
"It must have been tough." He dared, looking up, a hint of concern behind his eyes.

"You don't owe your parents anything. They've only given you the opportunities that they're familiar with. Judging by your words, it seems you've discovered there's a great big ole world out there beyond what they've given you," Kayne said looking directly at Ra. He glanced down at his sandwich for a moment, then looked back up.

"Besides, your mother is the only person who can be your mother, your father is the only person that can be your father, and you're the only person that can be you. No one gave that to you and no one can take that away," Kayne said a little more emphatically than he meant to. He looked back down and took another bite of his sandwich as his mind started to turn gears that he hadn't oiled in a while. At Ra's words he looked back up at him. He studied him for a moment then gave him another smile.

"Yeah. It was. Though I'm not sad at the way my life is. To tell you the truth, Cirrus and I are much better off without our parents," Kayne replied softly, the image of his various scars on his back coming to mind. They were much, much better off without them.

Ra smirked and shook his head.
"But then what's the point of showing me the world if I'm not allowed to embrace it." It was another slightly cheesy point, but hopefully Kayne would understand what he meant. He almost meant it literally. The other night with Chii, had made him more adament that he wasn't going to bow down to them much longer.

He gave the table a distant look and flipped his hair out of his eyes. Kayne's words were interesting and very clear, he wondered what he had seen. His mother said similar things about his grandfather. It intrigued him, but he stayed quiet for a bit.
"Look at us, go for a light lunch and end up getting into the heavy conversations." He gave a small snort of laughter to break the mood and put his sandwich down.

Kayne acknowledged Ra's own bit of wisdom with a small nod and shrug. That right there was the question that Ra needed to work out for himself. As a lull fell on their conversation Kayne chewed absently on his sandwich until Ra spoke again. He looked up and laughed quietly.

"I blame it on the sensei," he joked, picking up his banana and peeling it. "She started it with that Bruce Lee quote." That comment brought another subject to mind.

"So what did you mean English is your third language? How many languages do you know?" he asked, genuinely interested.

"Yeah, she's an interesting one." He mused moving on to the second sandwich. "I understood it a bit, I think." He said staring across the empty canteen and trying to remember the words. "Something about us gaining control over our thoughts and emotions. Once we have done that we will know who we are, where we are going and be totally in control." He shrugged a little guessing he was completely wrong.

"I speak four languages fluently and a couple just enough." He said reaching for his tea. "Farsi or Persian as it was called is my first and native language. Arabic is my second, English my third followed by Urdu. Not as random as it sounds. My mother is a lecturer and ambassador of women's rights, so we travel around a lot. It's the reason I'm in Japan." He stopped, thinking of a question and turning back to Kayne. "How come you and your sister are here? In Japan I mean. It's a bit of a random place to end up."

Kayne laughed at Ra's analogy of the quote. Not because he thought Ra was wrong, but because that had been the same path he had been going in. "I think you may be right with that. It seems like something she would say," he grinned.

He listened to Ra's list of languages and was thoroughly impressed. He grinned again at Ra's question, thinking of an answer to give him. "Well... as you may have guessed, our fight wasn't my first. Back in LA our father had to move us around to different schools because of my temper. I guess he got fed up with it... that and I think he ran out of schools to send us to with my record and all. So he started looking for overseas boarding schools to send me. It seems that Aquila was the only school willing to put up with a hot head like me. Cirrus wasn't supposed to come, but she didn't want to be separated from me. So... here we are," he said with a smile as he finished his banana.

Ra held his tes close to his chest and listened to what Kayne had to say about his fights. Although opposed to physical conflict he understood what it felt like to get so riled up that violence seems like the only option.
"I've been in one fight." He said quietly. "Last year, the main kid that bullied me pushed me too far during a game of field hockey, I smacked him in the face with my stick. Broke his nose." He looked up at Kayne and smiled. "It felt good too. Though I know it shouldn't. That's why Morimoto's on my case. He saw that one incident on my record and labled me a troublemaker. People are too easy to judge sometimes."

He shrugged and unscrewed the cap on his bottle.
"Don't listen to the lables. I think that's important. You're a good person. And your sister seems lovely." He paused, a slight panicked expression crossing his face. "I mean in a friendly way, she seems very well adjusted despite whatever you have been through."
