I agree with XShadowMistressX, actually. I call myself Taiwanese rather than Chinese.
I do consider Taiwan a seperate entity from China. It's basically independent--it's running and has been running itself successfully for years, its government system is Democratic rather than Communist, and most countries seem to recognize it as its own force and nation.
When I say I'm Taiwanese, I do mean that I'm Chinese in background. No one can deny that Taiwan's roots lie in China. But, my background nation (I'm American-born) is Taiwan, not China.
I don't think the first post in this thread was written very clearly. The poll wasn't terribly lucid, either...so I'm not sure what to make of the poll results or all of the "I'm Chinese" responses here, eheh. XD

XShadowMistressX *reads previous comments* I wish people would read the first post before posting. A lot of these comments don't have anything to do with the actual topic.
I consider myself Taiwanese. Despite the fact that Taiwan is technically owned by China: -It it still regarded by the majority of persons in the world as its own country -Its government is not in accordance with China's -If China ever decides to "take back" Taiwan, the U.S. has an obligation to defend Taiwan. This means that Taiwan is currently regarded as its own body.
Simply put, China is only the titular "owner" of Taiwan. but people from tiawan originate from china... therefore their roots are still chinese no matter what politics say >< ark... stuff like this is confusing

He still calls Taiwan Formosa, and it's really strange. Every time he does it, my friend laughs at him, and she's not even Taiwanese or Asian or anything.
Also, that statement's false anyway. There are people who are native to Taiwan. My friend's one of them.
