I have about 20 or so notebooks full of the bits and pieces I've written about my characters. The most important ones are on a shelf above my desk and the others are in a platic container under my bed. I have a bunch of files on my computer with some more partially written stuff. BUt I used to have a website where I put some of the stuff up on.

I'm curious (I hope this curiosity is appropriate for this particular thread) - when you've come up with a character, and you're not an artist (or you are but you just can't put the character together yourself), how do you describe them to the person you want to commission? Photographs? Other pieces of art you've seen? Detailed descriptions? Short descriptions?
I'd love to see any example pictures/descriptions anyone has (I could post mine, too, but they're a bit dull, I'm sure).

I enjoyed that (and I did want to read it - so there!), especially the description of Bohren's feelings towards Rivek - monstrous (; Meanwhile, if everyone is as organised as you, I must be completely hopeless - my descriptions are completely poxy compared to all of that. Mine have always been pretty disjointed - I've tried to have section dedicated to particular descriptions, but I just get carried away and the whole thing gets convoluted and repetitive. Having said that, more recently I've been using collages: http://luminescher.com/images/col1.jpg + http://luminescher.com/images/col2.jpgThe first one of those I did was to give a visual for a friend, but when it came to commissioning someone I didn't have the words and was a bit "hrm" about sending ten squidillion example image links with notes on the side. It hasn't gone too badly so far - some artists ask for more details, but most don't, and I'm quite happy with any changes they would make, too (hence some of my newly commissioned pieces don't always appear to be the same character, but I just take what I like from pieces and add them to the existing description, anyway).

Geh, okay, I admit, Rivek is sorta totally gay, lol. The whole RIvek/Bohren thing doesn't end happy. Such is the price one's character pays when its teenage creator is easily influenced by trends. XD
Whoa, nice. I like how you give a lot of visuals for your char. It helps a lot. And having everything in one place on a collage is helpful, too, when printing references.
... freaky, your chars have BODY PARTS FAlLING OFF DX!

I generally make bio's like Woe. :3 Though if I have specific details in mind that I can find ref pics for, I have gone the collage route before as well. I think it's much better than presenting a whole series of links. whee

I do both as well, though my bios aren't as detailed as Woe's. I just give a general appearance/characteristics of the character for the particular piece I'm commission. And I always end my descriptions with "if there's anything else you'd like to know about her/him just ask! I'd be more than happy to go further into details." It's just easier to respond to a question than to think about specifics that would be useful for the portrayal I'm looking for. For example, I generally write out something about Mek being an overly sexual entity in the personality section since that basically IS Mek, but it wouldn't make sense to include that when I'm commissioning a picture of her world being completely shattered (which I have commissioned and have yet to recieve v.v;; Email time!) . Wheeee, slightly off topic. But what I meant to basically say is that I only include the necessary information and I don't give too much background/history.
I make collages too when there are too many reference pictures to refer to. For Loki, I just a have a skirt/shoes ref and the one pic of her so it's easier just to use links.

  ...I have to admit it, I totally stole Raesha's way of making bios xD xD...like...totally xD. one hundred percent. Mostly because every time I started to do a bio of my characters, I forgot about something important...like, eye color or hair xDDDD...And since I wanted at least once to do it good, I thought...'Heck, Raesha's the founder of the OGAWG, if anybody knows how to do a character sheet, it's her!'....so I totally ripped of the layout of the sheet from her...
...but finally, everything is there xDDDD

XD I made my own bios templates after staring at everyone elses and taking as much possible as I could from them, hehe. Part of the reason, though, that I make mine so detailed it because I use them for self-reference... my characters ... sometimes get so detailed that I forget. XD;
Often, I like reading more than most artists, though. XD; I mean, I print out only the physical description, but I read the rest for kicks.

So far I've only encountered two artists who wanted fantastically long written character descriptions, a handful who didn't mind either way, and quite a few who don't want to have to read much at all - to save everyone from potential boredom (I love my characters and their worlds, but I'm sure most other people don't) I try to minimize anything written. Having said that, I can be quite hopeless at being succinct (; WoefulInfinity Geh, okay, I admit, Rivek is sorta totally gay, lol. The whole RIvek/Bohren thing doesn't end happy. You know, you'll have to create some sort of alternative ending to appease people like me who are sitting here thinking "nooooooo!" (; And thank you (: I used to just send ten squidillion reference links, but I think it was confusing for everyone involved, and a collage simplifies the process a bit (I hope - I imagine it doesn't always). ... only if seen by human eyes (; That's why her hands are covered, and that's why another character has to where a scarf in public all of the time (;

Yeah, i know most don't want to read, so I just send a couple refpics in addition if I can. I like being able to make 'em when I reed them. It's annoying, though. lol. I kind of hold my advantage n Gaia because I read and check links and stuff. XD;
Lol. We'll see. It'll probably end bittersweet or something, but neither one's going to end up hating the other - that's just not possible.

I suppose it would be nice if more people were interested in reading - I'd love to just hand someone a paragraph and say "well, that's it; feel free to do whatever you like - just take from that what there is". I doubt anyone would go for it, though (;
Bittersweet makes my heart hurt, I think (; But it is better than them hating each other, yes (:

But it leaves too much room for physical interpretation, though. I mean, I don't mind designing a char, but i'm worried a) I'll be too attached to the design and b) the design doesn't have the look/feel the commissioner wanted.

It would be a risk the commissioner would have to be happy with before leaving it all to the artist, I think (; And, of course, the artist would have to consider whether or not they could be happy with it, too, as becoming attached to a design that would ultimately be someone else's character would be a bit horrid.

Does anyone ever get the feeling that their OCs suck? either, like, they're not original enough, not believeable enough, or just not cool enough designed to make people like 'em?
