“Good. I had some in my bag so I will cook something delicious over the firepit when we get out of the waters.” Tyiva relaxed some more and allowed her body to simply float. It had been years since she had done such a thing with Danika and truly it felt peaceful. She was blessed today. She had learned about having triplets a night ago and now here she was spending a full day with her old friend. No worries, no responsibilities, nothing.

“I’m looking forward to it.” Danika replied lightly. “I have some meat stored near my shelter. So we do not have to worry about hunting unless you are feeling truly nostalgic.” She teased as an ocean breeze brushed along the waters, kissing her skin which had been warmed by the sun. Her legs twitched beneath the waters, slight goosebumps rising from the cool waters in response to the breeze.

“Hunting?” Tyiva pursed her lips thoughtfully. “If we had more time then I would gladly go on a hunt with you. However, I should not stay the full night else my significant other will worry.” If Karo could come and go to Chibale like Tyiva then she would not have these worries. They could study the stars and spend time with Danika but rules were rules. She knew better than to break them.

“Fair enough. Another time then.” Danika chuckled lightly. “You are fortunate that you cannot bring her over.” It was almost as if she could read her friend’s mind, “Else I would be able to share all of our embarrassing childhood stories. We did get into a lot of shenanigans after all.”

“Oh please no, Danika.” Tyiva protested with a laugh. “Like that time we hid spitarogs throughout the whole meeting hall and had to spend the next two days making up for our mess?” She had taken the brunt of the blame for that one out of fear for Danika. What would the Elders have done to the young mystic in training? It was far easier for Tyiva and their friend, Taka, to take the blame that day.

“Yes, yes.” Danika flushed sheepishly. “I’m still so thankful that you covered for me. I did try my best to sneak in to help with the cleaning whenever my studies allowed.” She had been so busy learning their ancient language and customs that it had been hard to spend a lot of time with Tyiva, but when she did manage they made the most of their time. “Then you tried riding a wild radaku when you hadn’t even gotten a blade yet…” She mused with a quiet laugh at the memory.

“Ah. That one gave me bruises that lasted for days. I couldn’t sit down for the longest time.” Tyiva replied with a chuckle of her own. “It was not my most shining moment, that is for certain.” She confessed lightly before twisting in the waters to swim one last lap around her friend. “I’m just glad we all survived the menzuri.” She shuddered at the memory of the wild creature that had wandered into their paths. The venom had been dangerous but the girls had managed to fight their way out of the situation before reporting it to older warriors.

Danika actually shivered at the memory of the menzuri. They were nasty creatures and she had witnessed the power of their venom too many times. “We are fortunate indeed. Aisha protected us that day.” They had been too young to deal with such a dangerous foe. Her heart twisted at the possibilities of what could have gone wrong before she reminded herself that they were fine and had survived. Only one other thing brought such a knot to her chest and it was the Dretch. The realization made her frown before she too joined Tyiva in swimming a bit more.
Going beneath the waters always gave Danika peace and some sort of clarity. Emptying her thoughts and just letting the waters wash over her was almost like brushing away the negative memories. A small smile crossed her features as she sank lower into the waters and it was a few moments later that she emerged with several shells in her hands. “I’ve got some prizes if you would like to head back.”

Tyiva sighed as she watched Danika swimming beneath the surface. She knew that expression on her friend’s face and almost regretted bringing up the menzuri. It took the vilest of creatures to truly disturb Danika and she felt sad that she had brought such things to mind. “We can head back. Let me find some more mussels and I can make a stew.”

“That sounds lovely. Let’s gather some mussels and whatever else we can catch?” Danika asked as she shifted the mussels in her own hands. A seafood stew sounded lovely and Tyiva made the best ones. If they gathered enough now then it would be ready by late afternoon and her friend could take a bowl back across the isle into Jahaur for her companion.

“Perfect.” Tyiva smirked. “Let’s see who catches the most?” With a laugh she dove under the waters and began her search. A few strides more, most of her time going back and forth from the deeper waters and the beach, Tyiva found a good haul. Brushing her hands against her borrowed skirt, Tyiva smiled towards Danika. “Looks good to me.”

“Plenty for a stew.” Confirmed Danika as she dropped the last handful of mussels back onto the beach. She had a small bag which she had brought with her to the beach and quickly began stuffing it full of their finds. Some small crawfish, a couple of fish, mussels and some deep green seaweed would do them good. Thankfully she had left a net along the beach for whenever she felt like catching her own meal and it had come in handy during their quick gathering mission. Now they just had to take it back up the cliffs and to the firepit where she had a small shelter built.

“I saw that you had the shelter...I’m assuming it’s a small kitchen since you cannot cook directly in your home.” That would smoke the upstairs and could risk fire. It was a main reason so many sisters kept their cooking outdoors or in a smaller cave or hollowed tree that they did not mind smoking up. A dry cave was the best but most of those were in Jahaur minus the ones near the meeting halls where sisters could cook for the whole community on Chibale.

“Yes.” Danika nodded her head. “It’s mostly outside but I keep the spices and pots in a small area that I built beneath another tree. I’ll show you once we get back.” As she spoke she finished rinsing the rest of their catch in the ocean and started to place it in her bag. Leading the way back towards the cliffs, Danika began to climb back up towards her home.

Following Danika, Tyiva took one last look at the beach before leaving. It was a beautiful spot and she hoped to visit it again in the future. Perhaps even with her little ones in tow. They would love a day at the beach after all. Who wouldn’t? She just hoped that they would be welcome in Chibale despite their mixed blood. As she reached the final stair, Tyiva made her way after Danika and towards the cooking area. Already her friend had a large ceramic pot by the firepit and Tyiva glanced towards the large stone sitting outside. It was mostly smooth and would be perfect for cutting up the fish. “Got a knife or should I use my blades?” She teased lightly as she grabbed the fish.
