The sound of what sounded like trumpets caught Ashley's attention, the half-turn almost automatic as grey eyes glanced around to catch the source only to catch sight of the emerging woman - and whilst Ashley was sure that she said something, maybe about who she, maybe about the rats, most of what she had said seemed hazy, apart from the last words addressed to someone amongst the crowd–
The gigantic rat crashing in and interrupting was unexpected and the way that the shadows lengthened were even worse, but there was no handy rapier this time around.
There was however the food table, still set up with refreshments - refreshments that Ashley was half-wishing that she had helped herself to even as she made a dash towards it.
Well okay, not really much of a dash given that the clothes she was in was not exactly 'dashing' material - although she did try to move as fast as she was able to.
Her hands landed on the tray, the movement sending the contents - what appeared to be prettily iced cakes - flying as she yanked it up and tried to use it to whap the nearest rat soldier.

Suddenly there was a very excited man talking to Cerise and she couldn't help but laugh. Not at him, certainly, but rather with him. It didn't really matter where he had come from, Cerise was just glad to see another kind face. And so when he held out his hands to show her that he had them, Cerise giggled and held out her own, exclaiming, "Me too!"
And then...
Oh gosh. Oh wow. Cerise's breath caught when the woman emerged from the curtains, like every princess from every fairy tale she'd ever been told. She was, in a word, amazing. Cerise tugged on Seren's hand with a wide smile and pointed at her asking, "is she the princess? Can we go talk to her? I wanna meet her!"
Except for that there wasn't time. The lights went out and the room shook and Cerise screamed again, throwing whatever was in her reach -- was that a platter of food? -- and tossed it as hard as she could while still trying to hide in Seren's skirts. Not that she avoided being hurt, that was. A scrape along her arm, tearing off the sleeve of her dress left a long red wound that, while probably superficial, still stuck like the dickens and caused even more fear in Cerise.

Seren was about to suggest the two of them go get something to eat... But suddenly there was a strange man bouncing over to talk to them. She stood, quickly, with the intent to get between him and Cerise, because one never knew what strange men might be planning to do... The girl did not seem scared, at least, but she probably had no idea how dangerous unknown men could be, especially men older then ones'self.
And then he showed off his hands and her brows came together. That was one of the strangest statements she had heard, unless this fellow was... Was he a guardian cat, really? She had no way of knowing, but if he was, he was taking such a risk, telling everyone that. She simply decided to respond "I think most people do, after all. But yes, your hands are very nice... And thank you. My hair is naturally blue, the rest is dye and it takes a lot of effort to maintain. I have not yet eaten, perhaps we should d..."
And then the Princess or whatever she was came out, and started to speak. Seren gently smiled down at Cerise and said, softly, "Perhaps after the ceremony... We wouldn't want to interrupt..."
Not that it mattered, apparently, because the giant Vermin King took the interruptions out of her hand and started another battle. Seren gave her dress a forlorn look... It was so lovely!... But she glared in fury at the monster, as Cerise shrieked, and hunted for someth... AH, a wine glass. She snatched it, and threw it at the nearest shadow, her free arm going around the girl protectively. The shadows attacking HURT, they hurt a lot, but she would be damned before she let them hurt the child. "New friend! Aid us, please?" She called out to the man, hoping he would help her protect the girl.

As he took a bite of his own food he wrinkled his nose in distaste - too sweet. But he knew Jason liked his sweets so he didn't mind if the other pilfered his plate, or just took the whole plate for himself. He'd find something, he hoped, that would suit his taste a bit more. He'd never been much for sweets, a little sweet was ok but what he'd just tried was far too sweet.
"I think you can have that as well." He was saying that as Jason was commenting on the clothing.
"Mmm, it is a blur. But I suppose that's normal. Everything did go so quickly after all." Shrugging a bit he turned his attention towards the trumpets and the Queen who was making herself known as she came to stand before the gathered crowd, this was her ball after all. He had been wondering when she would appear, right? Because she had to turn up at some point. "She's lovely." And they had fought for her - what an honor.
"Of course." Nodding to his friend he let the others shirt go, for now, and watched him head up to receive whatever honors were his to be had. He'd done well in the battle - really well.
All was not to be though. Just as Jason was to receive his award the doors banged open and turning around, rather quickly, he spotted a larger rat - larger than the others. The King of the rats. There were no weapons and as the lights were snuffed out he went to grab a large candle holder. With the candles put out it was safe to swing about, and it had some weight to it. That was what he threw at the Rat King as he made his way towards the Queen. He couldn't let the King of the rats get to her and harm her, he just couldn't.
"Jason! Keep her safe." Calling out to his friend, hoping to be heard over the noise. He found himself being brought to the ground by another rat, and it was a struggle to get back to his feet. It seemed focusing on the rat king hadn't been a good idea, he'd failed in attacking one of his followers...and they had gone for him.

Etoile noticed some of the others present didn't seem to enjoy everything tasting so much like sweets as much as she did, but paid it no heed. After all, it meant more for her! In spite of her small size, she had a pretty voracious appetite, and had been in the middle of going back for seconds (or was it thirds?) when a very pretty woman showed up, apparently some sort of Queen. Etoile didn't catch most of what she was saying, but she apparently was congratulating one of the other people here with them, not that she knew who they were.
Suddenly, though, there was a giant rat, and the lights went out. Etoile was still relatively clueless as to what was going on, and she really just wanted to get some more food before it was all gone, but the big rat was trying to attack the Queen, and she at least could figure out that that was bad. There were no weapons like before, though, and Etoile couldn't use her kitty laser beams while she was... not a kitty, and so with no other plan of action, she picked up a sweet roll from off the table behind her... and tossed it at the Rat King.
It bounced off his head.

Cynthia was still pretty peeved at all of the food, and when the "Queen" came out she was not impressed. In fact she was just about to yell at the woman when she noticed someone familiar come up to her. But when the rumbling started, Cynthia was almost thrown off her feet. Darn high heels! She had them when she was powered sure, but at least the magic also seemed to help her keep her balance with them on!
The rat king was here! Well Cynthia didn't care too much about why he was here, only that he had made it dark and he was attacking. She grabbed a plate and threw it at the giant target, but even if he was incredibly large, she somehow mostly missed and just barely nicked him.
She heard her ice maze companion maker her comment and Cynthia agreed. "It was an abomination that's what it was. Who thinks that everything needs to taste like candy? People with no taste buds." She said, trying to grab something else, but everyone had grabbed something off of the table already, leaving her with a sweet-tasting drumstick in hand.

Mel smiled at the little human and even stuck his tongue out at her, he liked her. She was fun. The bigger human seemed to be quite a bit more weary of him since she stood up and sort of inserted herself between him and the little one but any thoughts on that matter went out the window when she actually started to answer his questions. "Dyed? You can dye hair like that? Can I do that too? The cookies are-" He trailed off at the trumpets, golden eyes quickly locking onto the icey looking woman in white who was talking.
He wasn't really interested in what she was saying. He really didn't care, instead he just wrinkled his nose and really took in the surroundings. He wanted to dance, or move, or something but everyone was paying attention to the lady. Even he knew better to interrupt such a important looking person so instead he just bounced a little in place, humming to his own mental music.
Any jollity he felt blinked out along with the lights, a growl that was more cat then human once more echoed from him as he spotted the giant rat who busted in on the party. Another Rat! The cat-human practically vibrated in anger as the creature started to rampage across the ballroom, his shadow minions attacking everyone there. Mel was preparing to spring after the rat, ignoring the sting and zapping of the shadows that nipped at him, but the cry of the little one along with the request of the elder had him torn.
After a split second of indecision the male let out a yowl and started to attack the shadows surrounding them. As much as he wanted to give chase to the rat he was, at heart, a guardian cat. He was there to protect.
But damn it! He really wished he could sink his claws into that rat b*****d.
