Jack Burnett - Late to the run, so just watching and cheering the others on

Although he had been fully prepared to join in the Gingerbread Run, Jack had unfortunately woken up late and missed the start of the race. He turned in the toy he had brought in order to participate, but decided not to embarrass himself by going in after everyone else was already far into the course. Instead, he went over to stand by the sidelines and watch as a spectator. Maybe he would see someone he recognized participating.

It was probably just as well that the teen hadn't made it in time to join the race because he likely would have attempted to join powered up with his sailor uniform hidden under layers of clothes. He wasn't one to cheat, but how could it be called cheating if powering up wasn't mentioned in the rules? Besides, he didn't even know what the winner of the race won. He just liked to show off. Showing off mentally was more his thing than physically, though, so although he knew how to pace himself and had fairly good stamina, he wasn't too upset about having missed his opportunity to compete.

There were some very interesting, creative obstacles set up for the course and Jack admired them while he tried to spot where the majority of the racers were currently located on the track. There was the 'peppermint forest' with 'peppermint trees' and while he could guess they were painted, he was really curious as to how they managed to make them smell so strongly of peppermint. Perhaps they'd mixed the herb with the paint, but wouldn't the smell of the paint have overpowered it? Or maybe they painted on a layer of scented oil on top of the paint. Whatever the case, they'd really gone all-out for a course that was just meant to be run through. The whole scene looked like part of a Candyland board game come to life. Jack could only imagine what the other areas would look like.

Soon he came across some place called Gumdrop Way dotted with giant gumdrops. A river dyed white had been labeled, 'The Milky Way', causing Jack to snort. He wondered what they must have put in there to make it look white. It couldn't have been toxic, especially because it seemed like the racers had the possibility of falling in. If they were able to use the guiding gumdrops in the stream to make their way across, there didn't seem any need to get wet.

Gumdrop Way was where the red-headed teen saw most of the participants in the run had reached. At the sight of pink hair, Jack was astonished to recognize Caelum and called out to cheer him on. His peer's running start reminded him of when he charged at Jack to knock him into the poinsettia display at the botanical garden and Jack began to wonder just how used to physical activity like this Caelum was. It took him a bit, but the young man was able to make it across without falling into the milky-colored water. It appeared the gumdrops were as springy as they looked.

"WHOO! Nice going, Cae!" He called, pumping a fist with his other hand cupped over his mouth to carry his voice. It wasn't long before another familiar head of hair came into view, though. From their bright, scarlet red hair color, Jack recognized Myles and his older brother, Jeremy the police officer. He laughed and yelled encouragement at them as well, though was amused to note that Jeremy seemed to be taking the race a heck of a lot more seriously than his younger sibling. Neither fell into the 'Milky Way', though, causing Jack to applaud them.

"Way to go, Fischers!" the teen bellowed, laughing.

((I apologize if Jeremy hadn't/hasn't yet told Jack his name, but I'd assume that after being told Myles' name, he would have looked him and Jeremy up because he's nosy like that~))

Auguste Atwell (competing)

He'd gotten past the first obstacles without too much difficulty; but the second wasn't that great, and Auguste's attempts at going faster than he wanted didn't quite work out. He managed to get stuck to one, then trip over another, until finally he landed with a splash in the small, meandering stream of milk.

Auguste hobbled out, shaking his head, and kept going.

Quote:
4 - For some reason you just wanted to rush through this leg. Maybe you thought it wasn't that difficult. However between the varying sizes of gumdrops, the slight bounce they have and the fact there's a few slick ones. You've run into a spout of bad luck, which landed you knee-deep into the milk stream. (- 2 speed bonus)

Fritz St. James (competing)

Fritz was doing remarkably well for someone who wasn't that into sports as a whole. He zoomed along, leaping from one gumdrop to the next, and made it through the leg of the race without having to trip over anything or get stuck on things.

Really, he was feeling very good about himself.

The dastardly milk river seems to be an obstacle of the past, allowing the racers to move away from the giant, colorful gumdrops. The next section of the course is one of the most impressive; the park you know looks nothing like the carefully sculpted ice cream slopes ahead. You have reached the Mudslide Slopes!

These slopes are shaped like giant mounts of chocolate ice cream. Easily two stories high, it's a climb just to reach the top--and it's chilly, too! Anyone unfortunate enough to have fallen into the Milky Way is probably regretting their poor footing! But there's no time to lament; a sign along the path instructs, 'Grab a waffle sled and speed down the slopes, be careful of the bends and chocolate rocks!'

Sleds painted to resemble waffles adorned the top of the slope; they were each decorated a little differently--some had molding or painting like whipped cream, fruit or chocolates. They weren't so different that any one looked like it had a distinct advantage.

Don't be too picky, though--none are so different that any one looks like it has a distinct advantage. This is still a race, so make the best of it! And watch out for the 'Rocky Road' obstacles! Chunks of foam chocolate speckle the course. Hitting one probably won't hurt, but it will slow you down!

Quote:
Roll two four-sided dice! The first roll is for speed and the second roll corresponds with one of the following prompts; prompts can positively or negatively impact your roll:

1 - Watch out for that . . . ! You get off to a rocky start, maybe you have trouble figuring out how to steer your sled, or you've ended up clipping some chocolate rocks on the way down; whatever has happened it's thrown you behind. (- 1 speed bonus)
2 - Ah this isn't too bad, you might not be a pro at sledding but you're doing great on the slopes! At least you haven't hit anything, but there's others sliding past you! (+ 1 speed bonus)
3 - Woohhoooo! You've figured out how to get a bit of a speed boost by using your weight to shift how and where you go. You're speeding past some of the other racers. (+ 2 speed bonus)
4 - Look at you go! You've out ran most of the field. Zipping past chocolate rocks and those other racers. You must be built for speed! (+ 3 speed bonus)

When you are finished filling out your post, tally your score (make sure to add or subtract the results of the second dice according the the prompt it correlates to). Please record the results at the bottom of your post in Bold Chocolate along with your Peppermint Forest and Gumdrop Way score. Keep up with your scores as they'll determine where you finish the race!

Amigar Perry - Competing

This race was getting sweeter and sweeter with every turn. Just her style. She thought as she saw the ice cream slopes ahead. It reminded her off the ice cream shaped tours she had made with truffles once. It was a unique kind of ice cream she had made for her parents anniversary. It was the first time she learned her love for sweets and her parents saw her gift. What a wonderful memory she thought with a smile as she suddenly saw a sign labeled "'Grab a waffle sled and speed down the slopes, be careful of the bends and chocolate rocks!' "

She quickly grabbed a sled and hopped on. She hadn't ever been sledding before but somehow she was doing okay no rough bumps or harsh turns. But she was making it. Surprisingly but surely she safely and bump free made it down the slopes. "yay" she cheered as she got to the bottom. Another good memory with ice cream to add to her book.

As she thought about she quickly got to the next area. she read a sign labeled pretty much grab a sled. So she did and she hopped on. She closed her eyes and wished for the best.

Deme was so tired and he was trying to fight it with every turn. Thankfully with the next area he could do just that. He quickly grabbed a sled and hoped on. A moment of rest was all he need. At least to catch his legs breathe if that was even a thing. After all sledding - how hard could it be? he thought as he took of down the hillside of ice cream

Kailey O'Carroll - Competing

Ok this was probably her favorite area thus far. Kailey grinned to see the ice cream looking slopes--even if the run up had her panting a bit and she was ready to cut a b***h over this s**t. Still, there was a particular, childish glee as she grabbed a "waffle," picky enough to make sure she had one painted and molded to look like it had been topped with chocolate.

Her favorite kind of sweet breakfast.

Looking behind her, she was surprised to see she'd gained a good distance on a lot of the other participants. The run up was pretty damn brutal though.

Taking advantage of her lead at least, she got onto her sled and pushed off, letting out a whoop of joy as she zipped past the decorations and obstacles. This was the first time in years she'd gone sledding, but hey! She was doing pretty damn good! By the time she'd gotten to the end of the run, she was laughing and finding this to be a lot more fun than the race had started out as.

Jericho Cross - Competing

Ok this next one was a bit of a surprise. The "slopes" made him raise a brow, if only for their height. Two stories. Really? Was this really necessary? Gritting his teeth, Jericho managed to make good timing up the slopes, grateful for his size to help the climb. Definitely not in the worst condition, he didn't spare a glance to those behind him, only aware that other racers were already on sleds and heading back down the damn slope.

He grabbed the first sled he could, not caring that it was painted to look like it was topped with whip cream or that there was molded fake fruit stuck to it. He wasn't there for staring at decorations. Oh he'd give credit to those who put this whole display together, the whole race really, but in the midst of it all? He had more important things on his mind.

Now his size became an issue. Jericho grit his teeth as he struggled to find a good balance--and fit--on the sled, never mind once he began the slide down. He wasn't going nearly as fast as he could have, and though he kept himself from hitting obstacles... well this wasn't his best area for the race, that was for damn sure. Whatever gain he got from his speedy climb up the slopes felt to be nullified by the slow rate of his decent, and by the time he was able to jump off and use his legs again, it wasn't soon enough in his book.

{ 4 . 3 . 5 } Total: 12

Cassie Finlay - Competing

Ok she really wanted to meet the people who were behind these decorations! Cassie had grinned to see the state of the park. Each area in the race was so... unique! And fun! Oh but that slope... Her face fell the moment she realized she'd have to run up that thing... and really, she wondered if it was too late to drop out.

No, she didn't. Drop out. But she nearly passed out at the strain it took to get up that slope. Panting, having to pause a bit for breath at the top, her legs burned and she felt like s**t. Cassie felt water well up in her eyes from the strain and the embarrassment, but she pushed herself to straighten and hurry to grab one of the "waffles." They were cute, and the fake molded fruit brought a grin to her face as she set herself up for the slide down. She hesitated slightly though, wary about the heights before she took a breath to calm herself and push off.

Once she got going, there was no looking back. A whoop of joy burst from her despite her nerves, laughing as she learned on the fly how to maneuver herself on the sled to direct her path. It was pretty fun actually! Beginner's luck, she managed to gain a bit of time back that she'd lost in her painfully slow climb up the slope. Not bad!

Gigi Gennaro (competing)

Gigi grit her teeth as the next obstacle rose above the rest of the park. Seriously, mountain-climbing? What kind of ‘run’ was this? Though the ice-cream mountains did look pretty neat, someone had put in a lot of effort. It was genuinely cold up here, and she wondered how the organisers had set that up. Hopefully they were putting at least as much money into the charity itself as into their race track.

At least the jog down would be easy, she thought, as she made it to the peak. She read the instructions on the sign, and groaned. Reluctantly, she selected a waffle and perched awkwardly on it, again regretting her choice of clothing, and wishing mildly nasty misfortunes on her aunt.

She wobbled as she pushed off, and right from the start it was a bad run. She just couldn’t steer the thing! She was sure the strawberry decoration was getting in the way. At first it would only slide a few feet at a time before grinding to a halt. Then when she finally got it going, it swerved out of control, zigzagging down the mountain with a mind of its own – and apparently her waffle was determined to bounce her off every single chocolate rock available. So this is what it felt like to be inside a pinball machine.

Kirra Morrow (competing)

All Kirra could think as she struggled up the mountain was ‘I wish it was real ice-cream’. She wouldn’t have to climb it at all, she could just eat her way through to the other side, and not have to go up up up forever, it was soo tall.

The ten-year-old’s legs were aching, and her enthusiasm for gingerbread was waning. If it wasn’t so cold here, she could have a nice sit down, maybe a quick nap. She’d never run this far in all of her life that she could remember.

Finally, she reached the summit, and that brought a little bit of enthusiasm back in her step. Of course the ice-cream hill was decorated with chocolate and cream and waffle bits and ohhhh! It was a great big slide! People were sliding all the way to the bottom! Well, that would give her legs a much-needed rest.

She didn’t have much experience with sledding, or with snow in general, but it didn’t look that hard. Grabbing a waffle, she laid it down flat, far back from the edge, then lay down on it on her belly. Pushing off with hands and feet, Kirra rocketed down the mountain trail, passing a few more cautious sledders with a wild yell.

Her joyful shriek echoed all the way down.

Pat O'Ryan - Not the best but not the worst. Woooo

It was a good thing Pat had slowed to a fast jog after going all out crossing the Gumdrop Way path thing or he would have fallen on his face in surprise when he got a load of the next obstacle, giant ice cream slops. Seriously, how the hell did they make them? Shaking off his surprise Pat put on a little speed and scooped up the first sled he saw, a simple one painted to look like it was made of candy canes, appropriate since he had such a hard time in the peppermint forest.

With a shout of excitement Pat took a running leap and away he went. The first few turns, the bends and dodging the 'rocks', were a bit harry but he got the hang of it after a bit. He wasn't the fastest by any means but he was having a hell of a time. The redhead almost didn't want it to end. "Yeeeee Haaaaa!"

Tom Wolf - Competing
Tom looked back one more time at the milky river that he had gotten over before making it into the Mudslide Slopes. Luckily he had eaten a bit before doing this race, otherwise he might have been pretty distracted by all of the decor. It looked good enough to eat! He only hoped it was all fake.

He slowed down for a bit to read the sign, and quickly grabbed a sled. He grabbed one randomly and started down the slope, zipping down pretty quickly. This part of the race seemed the easiest! Sure, he had to control the sled a bit, but at least it was a good break for his legs! Surprisingly he made it past all of the obstacles pretty easily and finally made it to the end.

Jason was starting to wish he had worn some warmer clothing, or at least that he had an extra pair of socks with him. His left foot had been the one to slip into the river and it was starting to get cold around his ankles, especially moving into the next part of the race. Looking at all of the ice cream decorations, he was starting to wish he had some hot chocolate instead. He grabbed one of the sleds, after reading the sign, he figured it had to be important, and started off. This time he took extra care to make sure that he didn't hit anything, even if that meant he wasn't going the fastest.

Caelum Dawson || Competing

Once again, Caelum was left to ponder just how in the world they managed to get such intricate obstacles for the race. If he were starved of food or lacking sleep, he would've been convinced the ice cream slopes before him were real. Just as he reached out to grab one of the waffle sleds, he heard his name carried across the racers, and looked over to see Jack, of all people, cheering him on.

"Hi Jack!" he called over.

His face brightened to a smile and he waved back, but not before realizing if he remained distracted any longer, he'd certainly lose. Gearing to go, Caelum dropped one of the sleds down to his feet and then gave a good kick. Down the slope he soared, overtaking some of the other racers with this speed. He even managed to dodge the foam chocolates. As soon as he reached the bottom, he was back to his feet and hustling again to the next obstacle.

Alerana Ikaros

Rana ran toward the next obstacle, eager to get through it. It turned out that somehow the race organizers had made a hill that looked - and felt - like a huge pile of ice cream. (Rana was vaguely tempted to see if it tasted like ice cream too, but decided that would be gross to try licking the ground, no matter what it actually was.) The stuff was cold and took effort to climb, so at first she thought that was the whole obstacle. Then she found the waffle-sleds. So it was a two-parter, was it? She didn't have time to think too much about what she was doing too much, so she just grabbed the closest sled, planted her butt in it, and pushed off down the slope.

These things went fast! She held on tight to the sides as she went zipping down the hill, her eyes on the slope ahead of her. When a lump of "chocolate" ended up in her path, she reflexively jerked to one side, sending her sled to one side and avoiding the obstacle. She grinned and tried leaning from side to side, back and forth, and found she could direct the sled to some degree. And she was getting past some of the other sledders! She whooped in excitement, then leaned forward for more speed.

Albert Wiley - competing
The gumdrop obstacle hadn't been particularly fun, but climbing up this.... chocolate ice cream mountain looked to be even less so - at least until he got to the sleds. Oh. Oh my. Well, Albert could honestly say he hadn't gone sledding in years, so he was certainly out of practice, but.... this did look like fun! Picking one sled that seemed liberally decorated with whipped cream, he climbed aboard and started the rush downhill.

He wasn't exactly good, but he wasn't hitting anything! And this was a nice chance to rest his legs after that hike up the chocolate hill. As cold as it was in this stretch, the greying programmer was all the more thankful he hadn't fallen into the stream. He could only imagine what the chill would be doing to someone with soaked socks!

Joseph Ross - competing

As one of those with soaked socks, Joseph was not enjoying this course very much. It was damn cold on his feet, and he was once again reminded why he preferred motorcycles. Footraces were annoying - particularly ones over unpleasantly chilly false chocolate hills. The redhead only wanted to get through this segment as quickly as he possibly could, so he burned through the climb, trying to ignore his soaked feet, and grabbed the first sled he came across.

All but throwing himself down the slope, he clung on for dear life and used whatever tricks he could remember from both sledding and days at the bike track as a kid to keep his speed up. It seemed to be working, too - he was definitely regaining a little of the time he lost falling into the stream before.

Cara Stauss - competing

Okay. Okay, she could do this. She... could tackle a mountain of chocolate and sled down the other side. Maybe. If she took it slow going up, anyway... Cara wasn't quite sure how a sled worked, having never used one, so after she picked out her own (chocolate and sprinkled, and a part of her wondered idly if any of these things were actually edible...), she set off down the hill.

She wasn't willing to risk hitting anything, so maybe her speed was still suffering a little, but she wasn't doing too badly. Definitely not for someone who had never been sledding before in her life. The gumdrop obstacle had been more fun, though, and she still hoped there would be a chance after the race to go and jump around on the squishy stepping-stones again.

Mudslide slopes! And-- sledding. Jada's eyes widened in horror and she paused, taking a deep breath. She hated sledding, hated it so much. She'd never been able to explain it. It wasn't the height- and it certainly wasn't the speed, she adored going fast.

But the instructions were clear- Grab a waffle sled and speed down the slopes, be careful of the bends and chocolate rocks! Someone bumped her, running by, and it jerked her to attention, realizing she had put herself behind.

The waffle she grabbed was covered in strawberries, and little rainbow candies, and really was adorable. Unfortunately, due to her hesitant start, she would have some ground to catch up on.
