His mind, uncharacteristically, drifted as Chel and her carriage of people glided through the grass. Virgins actually waited for this moment to be free. People who weren't known wholly--emotionally and mentally, yes, but not physically--binding themselves together. Would they be fantasizing what that first night would be like? What it meant to peel back those layers and more, not knowing what exactly was signed up for?

He stood there and watched her with those sharp green eyes like she was the only person there. And maybe it was strange that he wasn't taken aback by her appearance in the wedding dress, not sucking in a soft breath at the rare opportunity to see her in a dress at all. But that was because he knew exactly who he was marrying, inside and out. A white little number like that didn't change anything because he still saw Chel as she was: scars and colored hair and bright eyes and crooked smiles and sharp retorts and hick accent and orange laugh and more besides, more than anyone would ever get to see.

Owain, if possible, managed to beam even brighter as bride and groom touched, squeezed Jack's shoulder wordlessly, and then stepped back to give them space. The splinters had been removed, the wounds healed. (If for today, if for today.) It became not a cage, but a contract.

Jack's icy countenance began to melt as Jason began, though he never looked away from her. It was so very catlike the very he remained disdainful of the presence or touch of others but would relax at hers. He almost wanted to mutter something under his breath to her--make it like a movie where they were spectators commentating on the horribly dramatic proceedings rather than the centerpieces. Instead he let Jason continue, a smile beginning to light his face as he squeezed Chel's hand back.

Down the Aisle

Jack had barriers, but Chel didn't give a s**t. She leaned over during Jason's (really lovely, thoughtful) chattering and whispered, "You at a funeral or a wedding holy s**t dude."

She gave him a gentle nudge with their connected hands before looking back at Jason with that well-practiced what yes I'm totally paying attention look.

Finn was actually slightly bored, as he was with most weddings and likely would even be at his own if he ever had one. Perhaps if he could hear Chel's whispered words to Jack, he might have been entertained, but as of that moment, he was just hoping that the ceremony was not going to be filled with long winded statements and vows that heaped on the cliches of every wedding.

Basically, he was just here for the after party.

And to look ******** spectacular in his suit.

And to possibly to be supportive.

Down the Aisle

Thankfully Jason's little speech was just that, little (he could only come up with so much k), and he was quick to move on to the next part. He was quite happy at the fact he hadn't stuttered so far. Best not push his luck.

"The bride and groom have prepared something to say." He showed a nervous smile to everyone, then waited for Chel and Jack to say their lines.

He snorted softly, but his shoulders began to relax. Right. It was just that—

Jason finished. Now he had to ******** say it. In front of not just close friends like Finn, but strangers who wouldn't give a damn afterwards. ********. God. It was like opening a steel trap, especially because he had no cards or something to prompt him.

"With respect to my fiancée," he began, "I chose not to write them down." Jack cleared his throat.

"We live...very strange lives, to say the least. And there's not much I haven't told you already that would make an impact now, much less in front of..." He trailed away and glanced at the audience. An off the cuff Jack was a rare one indeed.

"Love is—"

No, ******** that.

"—That's never been the question of it, I think. Loving someone. Because you can love someone and still ******** it up royally." And didn't they know that so intimately. "Love wasn't what mattered to me most anyway. For me, it's always been about the truth of something. What it is that sits at the core, what are the facts, what does it mean. Here, especially, the truth matters more than anything else, because we are always facing so many unknowns in this vast and frankly terrifying world."

He paused, collected his thoughts, and wondered if what he was going for was cohesive at all.

"I love you. But that's not all. I know you," he said, eyes burning into hers. "I know who you are, Chel, even if you doubt it sometimes. You are the better parts of me," the more crooked parts (the sharp edge behind his grin, the nest of nails that dug into skin to hide and go hold, the passion that had no need for restraint and the fear that needed it) and the rounded ones (the subtle cues and nudges from a much too sensitive set of eyes and ears, the open hands where he left spaces, the compassion of a martyr paired with the temper of a rebel), "and you're this—ray of sunshine, for lack of better words, and the majority of guests we've got here can attest to it."

He couldn't help but smile enough for even the audience to see: not something bright and cheery, his face too sharp to house anything of the sort, but something similar enough; something hopeful, something akin to the realization that there wasn't going to be a sudden titan attack, there wasn't going to be an emergency call to arms, the day wasn't suddenly going to turn black, and for once, for once—

"Words mean nothing to me without action, but you've proven to me time and time again who you are and what you'll do, and I won't bore everyone else by going into it." He grinned. "I'll leave that for you to boast about later. The least I can do is this.

"I swear to support you through any and all hardships, even if you decide to act like a giant whiny a*****e when I beat you at drunk Mario Kart.

"I swear that Owain and I will be there to pull your a** out of the fire if you're there to get mine out, too, when I inevitably burn the house down trying to cook something.

And I swear above all else to love you until the end and even past that, but I'll make this ******** island work its a** off to kill us first. And afterwards, we'll find each other in the next life anyway, so ******** them."

Jack seemed done for a moment, but then he took another breath.

"In a moment, Finn is going to give me a ring that I'll give to you. And a ring is all that will be. You already have everything else."

Chel really did try very hard to keep a straight face, but she was covering her mouth by words mean nothing without action and a small snort had begun by And I swear above all else. She couldn't help it- it was funny. Jack rambling in front of a crowd, saying things that could have been in poetry. Chel always needed jokes and Jack was giving her too many.

Maybe she should have been crying or blushing or any number of things brides did, but it was like Jack said- they were all things she knew.

"You already have everything else," she said in a low voice, imitating him in a tone that implied she was definitely going to make fun of him for it all later. She snickered at the phrase anyways. They could have been sharing a private conversation for how much Chel cared about the audience.

Speaking of the audience, she turned to face them to give her vows and-

-completely forgot every word that was on the piece of paper she'd painstakingly written before.

She shot a look to Chris like uh help?? but it was quickly shrugged off. She couldn't remember it and it's not like Chris could stand in for her. She knew the gist of it. Good enough.

Before beginning she gave Finn a quick smack to the back of the head. "Alright pay attention 'cause now it's my turn." She knew he was just waiting for the party. Quite frankly, she was too.

"Man, ********, I don't know. I still can't believe I'm marrying you. Like do you guys ********' see this dude?" She pointed to Jack almost in an accusing way. "This is a dude that is so ********' far out of my league but he's here sayin' nice things about me anyways like ********>" In the same way that Jack rambled for a good bit about truth and knowing, Chel just had a lot of curse words for her preamble.

"Jack's my home, y'know?" She at least remembered that part, because that part was burned into her skull. Before Deus and even after arriving there had never really been home- even Chris was only a shield, a bond (one that left her) never home. But Jack- "He's always first. It's really stupid t'explain but like- and this is comin' from me- I really hope you guys find someone like how Jack found me. Someone that makes y'want to stand in front of people and shout at them how great they are- and like- someone that makes you better too. Someone yer really proud of and want t'stake yer claim in."

She looked back to Jack because that's who these vows were supposed to be about, right? "And you, I love you too man- an' when I say love you I mean all of you." The dark parts that only a ray of sunshine could illuminate. "You wasn't what I expected t'find at Deus but you been worth it.."

Promises, okay. Why had Jack made his like exchanges? Well she wasn't going to be bested by that-

"I promise t'always be better at giving presents than you f'you promise t'pay for them.

I promise bomb sex 'cause that's not changin' any time soon, but you better ********' keep up buddy.

Aaand I promise t'never leave, no matter how much we ******** up. I'm not me without you anyways
."

Chel wondered if that would win Jack's approval, but then remembered- "Oh! And uh-" She put her hands in his and leaned too close, obviously being flippant after all she'd said. What emerged was a falsetto voice- Chel wasn't Chel without jokes. "I'd rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone."

Then she looked back at Jason and said, "Alright let's wrap this ******** up."

Wow. There were things to say at a wedding, and then there were things to say. Jason looked shocked, but it was the good kind of shocked, the hunter trying hard not to laugh at their easily said, flippant words, because they were words from the heart.

Zanth, however, could laugh as much as he want cause no one could hear or see him besides Jason. Which made it hard to focus on the next part.

"Jack, do you take Chel to be your wife, through sickness and in health, to love and protect her with everything you have?" He tried very, very hard not to grin, or snicker.

Finn grimaced slightly when Chel smacked the back of his head, and muttered. "b***h." More than loud enough for everyone in the near vicinity to hear. However, he did choose to pay attention, because on some level, he related to what Chel had to say, and a side glance was given to a pale haired man sitting somewhere in the small crowd of gathered hunters, just a flicker of a gaze, before he was focused back on the two who they were supposed to be celebrating, no matter how gag worthy the proceedings.

Whenever Jack needed the ring, it would be ready.

She made it extremely hard to keep a straight face, and he stopped trying to fight it--especially when he noticed Chris' face souring the more they went on and with Chel being, well, Chel. (He passed Finn a look, a well, it's her and in ten seconds she's going to be my wife, and you knew what being here pretty much meant, but thank you for sticking it out look.)

Between the falsetto and Jason's obligatory and unfortunately obvious question, however, a very different and exasperated look came over him, and Jack looked skyward for a moment so that he didn't cause an accidental scene by jokingly calling the wedding off. Doing so would probably have earned him a knock on the head from Owain anyway, who remained starry-eyed at the proceedings.

"What the ******** do you think?" he deadpanned at Jason as he pulled his head back down. "Yes."

"U-uhhh" Now a little flustered, he turned to Chel. "Chel, do you take Jack to be your husband, through sickness and in health, to love and protect him with everything you have?"

Okay, both had agreed, now what was the next part... oh yeah!

"Great! Now's the time you can exchange your rings!" He may have sounded a little excited about that.

Finally, Finn's fifteen seconds of fame He knew his friend was bored as s**t up there, but when presented the ring, Jack still took the time to take the Moon's shoulder as well in silent thanks before removing the ring.

"That shiny enough for your alter ego?" he murmured as he slipped it onto Chel's finger with a little smirk.

With the ring on, she clenched a small fist to make it stay on. It looked good with a fist.

"Needs twenty more diamonds for her," she responded, looking over at Finn and sticking out her tongue before taking the ring from him. Her hands were shaking a little, not out of nervousness but just from the ceremony taking a lot out of her. Despite her perceived calm, entertaining this many people led to a lot of pent up worry for a person like Chel.

"Looks good on you."

Jason could see Chel's hands shake a little, so he kept the next part short and brief.

"Then by the power invested in me." Which was weird when did he get power "I know pronounce you husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride."

He then looked away from the couple cause he didn't want to gawk at them in their special moment k.
