Truth be told, Otto being expressive over anything at all was immensely entertaining to Chance, even if they were talking about pie.

"Does Shepherd's pie have shepherds in it?" He asked with a laugh. "And please tell me that pot pie has pot in it, otherwise why on earth is it called pot pie otherwise."

Otto rolled his eyes heavily. "Don't be so literal." He scoffed, "And what's with the people on this island and weed? I swear I gotta hold my nose closed walkin'n' by some of the dorms."

"Don't put that s**t in pie! Or brownies. Brownies are god damn sacred!"

He let out a laugh. "Hold up, hold up," said Chance, slowing his steps and waving his free hand. "I don't do weed, just so you know. Or any kinda drugs. I don't even smoke. Drink, yes, a little alcohol is good for the soul every now and then."

A smile was on his face, relaxed in spite of Otto's fierce protectiveness over his brownies.

"I had a weed brownie once when I was at the boy's home and it tasted like s**t," said Chance mildly. "I like my brownies when I can actually taste the chocolate in them."

Well, at least Chance was of a similar vein in that respect. "Well.. good." He murmured, having settled from his tyrade on respecting baked goods.

Otto poked Chance in the chest. "Exactly. Chocolate. That's what's ********' 'sposed to go in a brownie." He huffed, having found himself tired from being so passionate about pies. He'd make himself hungry at this point.

The cold ocean air felt great. Both the air and the water cooled down any of the Sun's attempts at melting him into a puddle. He breathed in the air deeply, letting it settle his nerves. He'd not actually been mad; just over excited. Pies did that to a man, you know.

"S'nice out here."

"Chocolate is something to be savored, not ignored in a brownie," said Chance, his memories flicking back to his childhood briefly. He cast a glance out at the water, feeling pleasantly cool in spite of the sun beating down on them. The ocean was loud, but the sound of the waves was strangely reassuring.

"It is," said Chance agreeably, giving Otto's fingers a little squeeze.

He lapsed into silence for a minute or two, and then said quietly,

"Half of my mother's boyfriends did some sort of drugs or another. Or smoked. which is why I don't do any of that s**t now, not that I wasn't offered some all growing up."

His lips twitched in a wry smile as Chance glanced over at Otto. "Not sure what you meant about the whole island and weed, but you don't at least have to worry about me getting involved in any of that kinda crap."

Otto squeezed back, finding he rather liked holding hands here right now. The noise of the ocean made him feel at ease, and he supposed that's why a lot of meditation CDs included 'ocean waves' to their tracks.

He gave a slight nod. Again, he felt he'd been lucky to grow up lonely, rather than the way Chance had. Not that he'd never felt in danger at home, but certainly not to those extremes. "I guess since I ain't never seen you do it, I shoulda assumed." That didn't matter, anyway.

He smiled, and tugged Chance along. "C'mon. Let's see if anythin' cool washed up on shore."

Sea shells, legos. Whatever.

It felt a little peculiar, standing holding hands in a place where anyone could walk past and see them. But at the same time, the warmth of Otto's fingers through his was pleasant and familiar, and he liked the way they felt against his own.

"Assuming makes an a** out of 'u' and 'me,' " Chance said in a singsong voice, but then he smiled down at Otto and squeezed his hand. "But no, you won't have to worry about me and most substances."

He found himself tugged along after Otto, the little smile he'd been given one that Chance tucked away for later, because Otto's smiles were few and far between, and most of them were tinged in a smirk or dripping with sass, not that these were bad either. But Chance liked the quieter ones too, the ones that were there simply to express what Otto was feeling.

"Maybe I'll be able to use some of the shells to decorate my room somehow."

"Yeah. Like, maybe glu'em on the wall or some s**t. Make the walls look like the ocean at night." Of course Otto had a vision in his head of it. Himself and Chance were both artistic in a sense. "Anythin' but the damned white on white. Yer desk needs work too. It all needs work."

He looked back, having a hand. "Unless you like boring as a main theme. I mean, whatever floats your boat, dude."

Brat to the end.

He rolled his eyes deliberately dramatically so Otto could see him.

"Are you calling me boring?" Chance asked indignantly, slowing to a stop and tugging on Otto's hand to make him crouch down. He reached out with his free hand, fingers sifting through the sand.

"This means you're gonna help me decorate, right?"

"Sooooo boring." He teased.

He crouched down with Chance, idly sifting through the sand for treasures. "Yeah, I guess." He sounded noncommittal, but he would actually help. "You need not boring curtains. And more pillows, dude, like dude your lack of pillows is disgusting."

"You also need, like, at least some posters."

It might have been easier to search with two hands, but Chance liked holding Otto's hand, so he made do with just one for now, fingers digging into the sand. He plucked out a shell fragment, and then another, and beneath that a buried piece of brown kelp.

"Okay, I do admit the lack of pillows is a problem," said Chance with a sigh. "That I would definitely like to improve on, if I can. "He pressed his hand flat against the sand a little experimentally, marveling at the way it felt squished between his fingers.

"Posters of what, exactly?"

"I'm glad you see the problem." Otto remarked seriously. Maybe he had a small pillow obsession. Sweets and pillows.

"I unno. Like... stars n s**t?" He shrugged uncertainly. "Like.. I got posters of bands I like. Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch. Avenged Sevenfold... Stuff like that."

There was a short pause.

"If I said," said Chance delicately, "that I'd never heard of any of those bands before, on a scale of one to ten, how ******** would I be?"

Otto sighed heavily, almost sinking into the sand right there. "Only my all time favourite bands. Geez..." But, well, it was metal. He didn't know if Chance even liked music that much, let alone something like metal or hard rock.

"I can't be surprised that you don't know, though."

"I'll have to listen then, if it's one of your favorites," said Chance absently, sifting through a particularly goopy patch of sand to get what looked like a green-glass piece of a bottle. He held it between his thumb and forefinger, examining it for a moment before tossing it behind him.

"I did like listening to music while I manned the bookstore," he continued. "But most of that was country music, since that was what my boss liked."

There was a split second of silence, and then, out of nowhere -

Splat.

The sand that had been in Otto's hand was now somewhere on Otto, and Chance was crouched there beside him, blinking slowly, almost innocently.
