Kostya laid a hand on Taym's shoulder, closer to the middle of his back, giving an unsubtle but not overly-forceful shove to propel him forwards.

It was the only way.

He hated it.

It was the only way.

"Vhy, Obadiah, no vun live forever," Kostya replied, the corners of his lips tugging upwards, and at his waist, Syntax chirped. "Live a little."

But... he did not know where the entrance was. He mouthed as such.

He let himself be pushed, and it was only at the realization that Kostya would go whether he did or not that he relented at all, although he was still taut as a guitar string. Whether he might, at the ultimate moment of truth, decide against it after all remained undetermined. Had he known that she was there, had he known her to be underneath the base, had he known, he would not have hesitated: he would have been underground long before this. But he knew nothing, except that he was afraid, so afraid, to go underground again.

He did not know either. They would have to look. So they started looking.

There'd be an elevator.

The base itself was almost a maze, although there was a sort of order to the sprawl that kept it from being so in truth. The labyrinth entrance has been hidden for decades, at least, but the two were aided by a small fact America rarely shared: she got lost easily.

At every intersection of the base, there was a post-it with arrows and familiar handwriting, sometimes accompanied by extra notes and doodles. The way was not straightforward, but it was shown clearly through the cheerful notes, with their humor and little stories.

The elevator, if they followed them through, was working.

He was bewildered by how much nostalgia the notes gave him. There was a reason why a label-maker was officially banned from house premises (for now).

Kostya stared at the elevator, sliding a glance to Taym. There was a lot of that. They had spoken more in the last hour or two than they had in ages, but it was like slipping into familiarity. Something reliable.

(Idly, he wished for Jane's presence, because if anything, she was unflappable, and always knew more than she let on. But it had been quite some time since he'd seen her.)

"Are coming vith?"

"Of course I'm ********' comin' with," he said miserably, quietly. "I just wish we knew."

"I know," he said, and did not sound condescending or cajoling in the slightest. Perhaps for the first time.

Kostya called the elevator, waited, and stepped inside. "But they vould not say, and she vould not say, and there is nothing to do but see."

There were only two buttons. A dim Up and a glowing Down. Several minutes into the ride the power turns off once, leaving them in the dark for five minutes until suddenly the elevator was jolted into action, its light flickering back on.

When the doors opened, they were met with a hallway and then the first of many intersecting corridors. Here too, were sticky notes, although it appeared America was not the only one using them. One person had a bit of leaving not direction, but dirty jokes in Russian. In several there was a small, quick drawing of America that had been edited with a different pen, making her breasts a bit larger.

At one intersection, there was a sudden smell that both men were familiar with: that of decaying bodies.

He halted, closing his eyes, breathing deep again despite the stink that made breathing deep so wretched.

"I'll kill them," he said shakily.

The elevator ride passed in silence, save for their breathing.

"A bit late for that," Kostya replied calmly, summoning his weapon. He did not breathe through his nose. The dredges of humanity began to trickle out of him: the looseness in his limbs fading, what little emotion he had evaporating.
He rises, he calls.
Whose body could it be? Whose bodies?

Kostya kept his vision trained ahead, searching for a scrap of red.

They are lined up neatly on a plastic sheet, blood still glinting with a sticky sheen where it had pooled too thickly to dry up just yet. Kivi, the Moon Hunter was barely recognizable. What wasn't missing had been brutalized with a combination of animal fury and very precise cuts. The remains of his face was a twisted horror of stretched muscle and broken bone. Boris was easier to identify, only a few pieces cut and torn from his body. Head turned at an unnatural angle, he stared up at them in frozen confusion, a mottled bruise across his throat, the shape of chain links clear as a signature or a cheerful little story note directing them down a hall.

There was a woman on the far side of the other two, and eventually she would be identified as Margery Bell. Her body was an abstract the violence. Here lies the act of rage. The culmination of hatred. Here is that which we would claim as animal in nature, shutting our eyes to the cruelties unique to mankind. Writ across her form was the reminder of what human hands, their hands, are capable of.

Under the blood, the figure's hair was blonde.

He was shaking and urgent until it was obvious that America's corpse was not among those on the floor, and then he fell still.

Methodically, instinctively, out of the blessed activation of habit, Taym (carefully not touching any flesh, avoiding as best he could any blood) began searching pockets for tablets. It was something to do, it was a job, it was an order to follow; he did it despite the fact that he did not expect results, despite the fact that it could not keep him from returning to stare again and again at the clear chainlink bruises across Boris's mangled neck.

"They attacked her," he said, stating the obvious, because of course they did. It would not occur to him to suspect anything else. Already Taym had begun constructing the mental picture: the traitorous among them closing in on some peaceful gathering, the resulting bloodshed, and America--well, not here, something happened, don't think about it, her body is not here, there is still hope, someone else has her phone, she ran, she escaped, she's hiding, she's just not here--lashing out in defense.

Just defense. Just a victim, forced to do something unpleasant.

All the scent of cleaners above, and they had not bothered to dispose of the bodies down here. Although, he supposed, there was no semblance of normality to uphold down here, in the lost ruins of some society long since extinguished.

Obadiah moved fast, and his ideas matched up with Kostya's, leaving the Russian with idle hands. He took the time, instead, to observe, not shying away from the gore. He had seen (and done) worse, although in a more clinical manner.

Or, at least... Not like this, pieces torn away and peeled and ravaged. Not like this, where fury had been the motivator. Never quite like this.

"So many qvestions," Kostya murmured, keeping his weapon summoned, the electric whine of Syntax still humming in the dead air.

"I am assume you have theories." Because he did. Bodies dismantled in the snow, gore along the walls, a red O painted to cover up the origins. "The only vun I care to know, is if you think she vill be herself vhen ve find her."

When.

Not if.

Because they would, dead or alive.

This made him stop, bewildered.

"Why wouldn't she be?"

Because someone else had her phone, obviously, the way someone else had had his. Because he'd know a fake not just from the ink across her chest but because it was her, and because he didn't think this situation had anything to do with them anyway.

Because surely she'd only put Boris here, the only body not maimed, still somewhat human, and surely she'd only put him here because she had to.

To that, Kostya could only shrug. "Because," he said, staring at the marks of chains wound tight around a neck, struggling to find the words. To distill down the sensation of being at war with not your body, but your mind. "Ve do not know vhat ve deal vith. Who know vhat they find down here? Vun seem so excited to send us down and down, but the other say: not yet. So vhat did they find?"

It was rhetorical, obviously, and Kostya looked back at the maimed one, at the exposed bone and torn sinew, with no more words to share.

He stared at him uncomprehending for a long several seconds.

"I assume he wanted us down here because he thought it'd be easier to get rid of us, and she didn't because she's smarter than he is and didn't want us to--to see this." A pause, and then, very slowly: "If America--and I don't mean something else using her body, I was at the Tower even if you weren't, I know what that is--if America, America Jones, did this--" he gestured, "--and she didn't do this, but if she did--then it would be... better..." the words were difficult, but they needed to be said "... for her, if she's--if she's dead before we find her."
