Step Two

Some of the caves house many useful stones, other house things waiting to kill you. You can keep on collecting for as long as your willing to risk it (or until you die.)

Roll 1d8
1: A few stones! Roll 1d4 to see how many you find in this cave!
2: Sentient sea weed aggressively gropes you! Roll 1d4 to see how much damage it does!
3: A nice amount of stones! Roll 1d8 to see how many you find in this cave!
4: Tentacles! Roll 1d8 to see how much damage they do!
5: A bunch of stones! Roll 1d10 to see how many you find in this cave!
6: This area becomes permanently mob free and reveals a large cache of stones, roll 1d20 to see how many you find in this cave!
7: The mermaids guarded several large, dark caves that are now open to explore. Hundreds to thin, snake-like tendrils shoot out from the darkness. Roll 1d12 to see how much damage they do!
8: The mermaids guarded several large, dark caves that are now open to explore. What appears to be a cave full of inviting stones is actually a huge toothy maw, patiently waiting to devour you. Roll 1d20 to see how much damage it does!

Rubbing his wrists, he continued to move on, past dead coral and new, and he wondered that among the plants and creatures made of Fear, how the world around it managed to just have a normal life. Then again, this environment was normal for them. He wondered - how normal would being a hunter be to him if he grew up here?

It was an odd thought as he moved to a small cluster of coral where a few rocks were collected.

He picked up the stones, which were few, but were of a good size. He collected them, set in his bag, and looked around. Under the water, with the light fractured above, it felt peaceful here. Merpeople sure had it nice.

He moved to where the island started to form its base, the underwater walls that dipped down like a spire into the dark depths where waster pressure and Fear kept him away.

It was here he noticed the caves. Open maws where shadows moved.

The mermaids were not as kind as Ariel or any Disney representation of them. They were sharp-toothed and scaly skinned, and their fins were lined with quills. It was not something he, if he was a sailor, would jump overboard for.

Inside the cave, the tendrils shot out, trying to pull him inside towards the mermaids and the darkness inside. Whatever they were guarding was aggressive and important, and he wanted nothing to do with it.

Kicking out, he tore at the tendrils until he pulled free, and quickly swam away.

Free from the mermaids, he moved alongside the caves, out of sight as he moved past large rocks and looked for a way back up and to the more timid areas of the ocean. He only needed rocks, not trouble.

The entire area was lined with more caves - and more mermaids, but there was one set that was left a little more loosely guarded then the rest. It seemed they didn't see these caves as important, and he was glad because he saw a large mound of stones open at the mouth of a cave.

Sure of his ability, he moved closer and went to reach out, but noticed that the stone moved. It was cameo - something alive was looking like stone!!

He darted back, but the mouth slammed shut and tiny, barbed teeth dug into his arm and tore in, scraping his Fear shield as he pulled his hand free and swam back. Heart pounding, he kicked out and away, not wanting to see if the owner of the mouth could swim towards him or not. Instead, the cave opened up again, waiting for something a little more stupid to come in.

Roll 1d6
1: you are safe.
2: you are safe.
3: you are safe.
4: a massive sea creature attacks you. Roll 1d20 to escape its gaping maw. If you roll 10+ you escape it, if you roll below you receive 10 damage and need to try again.
5: a bus-sized sea creature attack you. It has 30 HP and 5 auto damage. You can escape it by rolling 1d20 and getting 13+, failure results in auto damage.
6: a small-sized sea creature attack you. It has 15 HP and 3 auto damage. You can escape it by rolling 1d20 and getting 15+, failure results in auto damage.

If your HP drops below 0, you lose half your stones as your body floats back to the surface

It was time to head back. What stones he found were all located elsewhere and there were nothing but a hoard of mermaids around. He didn't want dragged into any caves either.

He turned, heading upwards - but was intercepted by what appeared to be a jellyfish. It was pink of all colors and spotted blue. Not natural by any means and he was instantly suspicious. The was furthered by the fact it turned and headed towards him.

Great.

The jellyfish was, oddly enough, small but fast, and moved after him. It's twisting tendrils looked fragile, but were as strong and stung with a sharp spike of electric pain each time they touched him.

He continued to move up, and the balloon-shaped jellyfish continued to move up with him.

It would turn around him with almost mocking grave and ease in the water, brushing against his thigh and stinging him once more. If it wanted to play, he wasn't interested.

This was the problem with swimming too far down. It took a long ways to go up, and when you had a persistent buddy wanting to sting you the entire time, it went even slower.

He tried batting the creature away, but his hand was only stung in return.

What did it even want? He wasn't even the same shape as it to be confused for one of its own, and he didn't match in color. Did he think he was just some big fish he could wrangle for a feast? If so, then he was a very disappointing one because he was not going to just wait to be stung over and over - even if it seemed that way.

Finally fed up, he turned, and this time punched the stupid jellyfish right on top of it's crown. The creature spun and in that time, Melvin kicked out and rose up to the water's surface. Pulling his mask off, he took a big breath before looking out to the shore.

It had not been a productive evening, but now he knew not to trust caves.

Find a place where you can reach the most perfect calm and focus possible, and then begin carving Uruz into each of your stones. Think on the purpose of the stone, and meaning of Uruz as you do so. Focus as much of yourself and your actions on the rune and the act of carving. Some people choose to chant out loud or do visual exercises to more perfectly focus on the task, but different methods work best for different people. Once the rune begins to glow, you'll know it's finished. Because this process depends more on people than lab computers and code, it's less consistent and predictable in its results.

Roll 1d10 for each rune stone
1-4: failure! The runestone never glows and eventually breaks.
5-8: Regular Rune! The runestone can power small, battery-operated runic devices for up to a week.
9-10: Superior Rune! The runestone can charge your runic weapons. (In and out of battle. If in battle, it will take 5 turns for the weapon to properly charge.)

After a shower and returning his gear, he went to sit in his lab and work on his stones. It wasn't a big store of stones, and while he was disappointed he didn't have more to practice with, he was a bit relieved he wouldn't be exhausted for most of the day after.

He worked slowly, having more time to focus on each stone without possible eye strain from doing too many, and was pleased with his success. Over half were perfect! He was very pleased with himself. He managed one regular stone, and the rest were just duds due to his own mistakes. Still, half that were great made him feel proud, and he placed them into his storage case and admired his handiwork for a moment before closing it.

Week Four:

Step One

In the water surrounding the island there's numerous edlritch horrors of the deep waiting to attack your hunter.

Roll 1d6
1: a massive sea creature attacks you. Roll 1d20 to escape its gaping maw. If you roll 10+ you escape it, if you roll below you receive 10 damage and need to try again.
2: a bus-sized sea creature attack you. It has 30 HP and 5 auto damage. You can escape it by rolling 1d20 and getting 13+, failure results in auto damage.
3: a small-sized sea creature attack you. It has 15 HP and 3 auto damage. You can escape it by rolling 1d20 and getting 15+, failure results in auto damage.
4: you are safe.
5: you are safe.
6: you are safe.

He spent the majority of his week in the morgue before he was forced to the Infirmary. After his head was checked (just for the damage to being slammed against the wall and ground - not so much for other reasons), he left.

He didn't know what to do, and upon entering his own room, felt too overwhelmed being anywhere near Rin's things. He had a list of things to do. Packing for her. Preserving her things in perfect condition in order to have even the smell kept locked and sealed - that way they would be ready upon Rin's return. He needed to leave the island and collect things for such a move and also arrange his small room for all her things. Her room still kept half her things she hadn't already brought to his room. He also had the garden to take on and send a request to take over.

Those tasks were distractions, ones he needed, but they were still overwhelming due to the reason they were being taken.

A swim in the ocean was just something that seemed good. To just get away and sink a little.

He gathered his things, signed out the equipment, and took a moment just wading in the water. Out on the ocean, he looked out at the island and wondered if he could just turn and start swimming forever towards nothing.

Instead, he dived down, more or less letting himself sink a moment and turned around to look up at the sun pouring through the rippling surface. He took deep breathes, loud behind his breathing mask, and let his mind just - face out.

It wasn't hard to find the caves again. There were entire walls going down to the abyss that were dotted like large coral with caves and moving shadows too human in size that it was a mistake if you didn't pay attention to them.

In the end, he was curious about something. Had the mermaids just evolved to guard these caves due to seeing that the hunters were collecting them? Did they also create runics or use the stones for some other purpose? Was there something more hidden in these caves.

He moved in a little closer to one of the less guarded caves where a pile of stones was resting.

He decided sticking to normal caves was better, but had to be sure that the next one he saw was actually a normal cave. He tested this out by picking up a rock and throwing it into the cave. It was a bit hard throwing anything under water, but after giving it a few tries, the rock went in without so much as a twitch from the cave.

With that, he moved in closer and started to collect some stones.
