Kenton tried not to groan when Maeza mentioned stars. "I am one for stargazing, but not by choice," he said. "I can navigate and set a course, discern location, and find destination by the stars. Unfortunately, they hold no joy for me."

He looked back at the tower. It was rather tall. Perhaps if he needed to run some independent training on location and theorize on tactical advantage, he could make the trip back up another day. But, not tonight. "So...?" he asked, turning back to Maeza. She seemed to be enjoying herself. He smiled politely. Did he feel comfortable enough to show off? Eh, why not, it had been a while. "Your turn to watch."

Kenton aligned his hips and shoulders with the lake, staring it down. He raised his arms to shoulder level, and drew a thin rope of water from the still surface. It floated in a little coil above the surface as Kenton thought about what to do with it. Turning back to look at the tower, he carefully lined up a shot and threw with his good arm, holding his injured one out behind him for balance rather than allowing it to participate. The rope of water went rigid, and flew from its place above the lake behind his back, weaving between his wings on its way up towards the bell. Most of the water connected, sending a loud ding out through the courtyard. The tail end of the rope faltered on the way up and broke off, raining down the side of the bell tower.

Kenton flinched, watching the little drops shine in the setting sunlight. Ahh... drat. "When I'm not injured, it normally works," he said apologetically to Maeza.

Maeza didn't need Kenton's words to tell her that he wasn't one for stars. HIs expression and the tone of his voice were enough. "That's a pity. They help calm me," she replied. It went silent between the two of them for a few moments. Then Kenton spoke and Maeza turned her attention back to him. She watched in amazement as he controlled water again, only this time is was much more water. She smiled as she watched the water hit the bell and heard the bell ring for the first time. "No, that was wonderful! I've never heard the bell before," she assured him. "I only wish my people could do something so incredible."

"It doesn't ring? What a shame." Kenton gingerly stretched his bandaged shoulder. All was well there, good. Having to drag himself back to Madam Sister barely an hour after being released would be poor form.

He gave a modest smile as she complimented his water skills. "Not all Tidal Fairies can do this," he said. "Our women do not have wings or powers, and even winged men cannot develop a level of mastery without enlisting. Waterfighting takes practice and skill." If he was honest with himself, Kenton was a very fair example of waterfighting. But, had he the chance, he would return home and keep training. The military man in him would never sleep.

"So. What now, Madam Princess?" he asked, folding his arms behind his back and planting his feet firmly at shoulder width. It was his default at-ease position, "Given the lateness of the hour I can infer that the banquet will start soon, but I know not for sure."

Maeza shrugged. "It never rang last year...It's a shame. The sound is beautiful," she commented softly. She frowned in concern when she saw how careful he was with his shoulder. Do we need to go back to Sister Eleanor? she wondered. Upon hearing about the women at his home, Maeza frowned. She'd lived without her wings for a while and had hated it. "So, you're pretty skilled in Waterfighting?"" she said, more a statement than a question. She herself was getting better with handling the light. She'd figured out how to mix sun and moon together gently so that it didn't immediately explode...though it was delayed for only a few seconds. "Maeza, just Maeza. Not Madam Princess. Please," Maeza said again with a polite smile. She glanced up at the sun and nodded in agreement. "It's going to start pretty soon. We should get back so there's time to change. They'll want us to look our best for this."

Kenton drew himself up to his full height and brought his feet together with a small clack. He folded his wings and dropped his hands slightly behind his sides in a professional, attentive stance. "Madam Princess, you are my superior and I shall afford you all the respect you deserve from me," he said firmly. "Respect, but I cannot disobey this order from my father and my King."

He frowned. Did he have anything formal to wear? He supposed he could always wear his light armor set, but that seemed like it might be more offensive than it was formal. Kenton supposed he could always borrow something from his roommate... goodness knows he hoped it wouldn't come to that. "I suppose. Shall we?" he asked, forming a loose fist with his gloved hand and offering Maeza his uninjured arm.

With a sigh, Maeza nodded and let the subject drop. Obviously he wouldn't be calling her just 'Maeza' any time soon, if ever. "In that case, sorry for asking you to disobey orders." Kenton seemed to be thinking about something for a few moments so she said nothing. When he offered his hand, Maeza hesitated for a moment, remembering how he had reacted earlier. But it would be rude to refuse, so she nodded and rested her hand on top of his hand. There wasn't a shock like before, but her hand was tingling slightly.

Kenton winced a bit. Something was bothering his hand as they began walking up towards the hall. Was it the bandages? Hm. On the offchance that it was, Kenton gently picked up Maeza's hand with his free hand and repositioned her so that she was gripping his upper arm over his tunic sleeve.

"Lead the way," he said, knowing the women's floor was on the ground. He could drop her off and then head upstairs to his own room.

Vincent had been busy admiring his companion when he was suddenly jolted from his reverie by bullets of random facts about.. The moon? Looking up at Levy rather confusedly, he started to hear bells chiming in the distance. Oh, right. The welcoming banquet. Sighing, he looked down, then to the dormitory building. "The banquet will be starting soon, will it not? We should go and change clothes.. I'll meet you back in the dining hall?" After bidding the fair maiden adieu, Vincent trudged his way across the grassy lawn to his room, where he would find himself some more suitable attire. After all, what was a Duke without his image.

Just before Izromos went out to patrol the grounds, he had stopped by his room for his bow. Now, he found himself staring into the lake. He had been wandering the grounds for a few hours now and since all seemed peaceful he thought it was a good chance to go for a swim. And to also check on the aquatic life. Nevertheless he kept his eye out for trouble. One could never be too sure in a foreign land.

When he had reached the lake he stared at the coloring. It looked like a semi-healthy body of water. Crouching down, he slipped his webbed fingers into the water and listened to what it had to say. The water spoke in a language that wasn't translatable. One could say it was the voice of nature speaking in the form of colors and smells. Dropping to both his knees, Izromos placed his hands on the ground and leaned down until his lips touched the water. Forming his lips into an o he blew into the water, creating a stream of bubbles. The Herr had put fish into the lake that were not native to wildlife. Clueless creatures dying because they cannot breath. After a few moments of creating a stream, he felt the energy drain out of him. Setting his bow and quiver down, he leaned face first into the cool liquid.

He knew it was against custom. He knew that is was wrong to bathe with clothes on. But he was so tired. He let himself fall into the depths of the element, relaxing and regaining energy. It had taken a moment or so, but eventually the gills that normally stayed closed on his neck opened, allowing him the ability to breath. Laying in the water for a moment, eyes closed, body relaxed, he listened to the sounds. It was quiet. The water and the creatures in the water spoke but the lake was not a natural creation and therefore did not hum with the Earths song. Suddenly, he opened his eyes and looked around the lake.

It wasn't long before he was swimming effortlessly through the element as if he had been born in it. He checked on all the fish, inspected if they were laying eggs or not, and then rose back to the surface, gills closing once they hit oxygen. Slowly, he walked out of the lake, dripping wet all the way to his skin. His hair was still, somehow, tied back in its ponytail though despite it all.

Once both feet were back on land, he picked up his bow and quiver and replaced it on his back. Then, feeling the full effects of sleep derivation hit him, he made his way to the residential hall. It would be best to ask Herr Connolly if I may be relieved of my position, he thought as he made his way towards the housing building.

Levy couldn't help but notice that the young boy was still staring at her. As he spoke, however, she realized with a start that he was correct. The banquet was about to begin, and the princess was not at all prepared. "Sounds like a plan. See you soon." She said, nodding and turning to go inside. With a wave she departed to her dorm to change, wondering if her roommate had finally made it to the school.

Tom hung from the branches of the tree over the lake, swinging by his hands from limb to limb. He wasn't in the mood to eat, and he wasn't about to go be early to class. Instead, he hung out here, watching the fish swim aimlessly around in the water and shaking down leaves as he swung.

It was a peaceful life, at the Academy, he had to admit. Far more peaceful than the wretched hive of stress and anger he got to go home to at the end of term. And yet, it was here more than anywhere that made him want to slam his head against a wall to knock the boredom from his brain. Classes were useless, staff were useless, other students were largely useless. Tom pulled himself up onto a thick branch and sat down on it.

He sighed, leaning back against his branch and staring up through the leaves at the sky. It was a little cloudy, the small beams of sun poking through the leaves making his hair smoke and burn. Great. Maybe it'll turn back to black.

Out of the corner of his eye, he could see the scorched, dead earth where they'd buried whatever was left of last year.

What a nightmare. I should be impressed.

Should you shake my ash to the wind, forget all of my sins
Just let me die where I lie 'neath the curse of my lover's eyes

❖❖❖❖❖❖❖❖❖❖❖❖❖❖❖

Maeza hadn't exactly felt like going to class that morning, so she'd just stayed in her room that morning. But her room could only hold so much of her attention. Near the end of the first class the young fairy put her veil back on and flew out of her window, making sure to shut it back when she was done. She landed just below her window, wings stinging too much for comfort.

She walked slowly, softly humming some tune she made up as she went. There was a light wind and a few clouds in the sky. Maeza sighed as she walked, still seeing the scars of the war on the earth and buildings around her. Why had she come back? Why didn't she just go home? Well, home wasn't much better. Here she had freedom. And when she finally would go home,...well, she could only hope for the best.

She walked past the new lake and barely glanced at it. She didn't look in the tree and didn't see Tom sitting in it. She had her destination in mind, the place that brought her the most peace: the belltower. She'd just been there the day before with Kenton and now she was going back alone. Maeza closed her eye for a moments as she walked. Her eyepatch was itching. She would fix it later. The more she walked, the more it itched. Eventually she just stopped under the dark shade of a tall tree and yanked off her veil and eyepatch. Damned thing. I hate this. I can't see and I hate it. She stared at the eyepatch with her good eye and covered the empty hole where her eye used to be with her hand, tears beginning to roll down her face. What a nightmare year this is going to be. .
