It was at this point when Mengyao was, most unfortunately, accosted by a very unpleasant sort of group intent on taking his food, his clothing, and any other useful supplies he might have.
Needless to say Mengyao was not particularly appreciative of this.

He hobbled back to Peizhi, feeling distinctly worn out and exhausted. Using the last bit of strength he had left, Mengyao grabbed ahold of her saddle, hoisted himself up, and all but collapsed against her neck, his face against her mane.
"All right," he said, after a moment, and sat up, sighing."We're almost there."
Peizhi snorted.

Almost there, Mengyao thought to himself, spurring Peizhi to move faster, to ride faster. He could see the horizon just beyond the way, and something nagged at him, tugged at his mind.
Almost there.

Her laughter rang out in front of him, surrounding him. It reminded him of bells somehow, like clear, crystal bells that chimed and swayed and jingled in the wind; a very pleasant sound, if he thought about it a bit more.
"You act like you've never seen a firefly before," she said, and held out her cupped hands. Mengyao leaned closer, peering into the gap between her fingers, and something glowing gold winked in and out of sight.
"A firefly?" he repeated, and she giggled. "Yes, silly," she said, nudging his shoulder with her own. "It's a bug, you know? They fly around late at night and look like teeny suns."
Mengyao squinted a bit closer. "What's their purpose?"
She blinked, nonplussed. "Purpose?"
"Yes." He waved a hand. "I mean, what are they good for?"
She watched him for a long moment before bursting out into the same bell-like laughter. "You're so silly," she told him. "Their purpose is just to look pretty, that's all. Sometimes things don't need to have a use to others."
He was about to debate this, but there were footsteps drawing closer behind them, and a moment later his mother had appeared, tall and elegant, her dark hair swept up into an elaborate knot at the base of her skull and decorated with a flourish of beads and jewels.
"Children," she said lightly. "Come inside, it's getting dark. It's time to get ready for bed."
Mengyao almost protested, but his mother was giving him one of her trademark don't argue looks, and he glanced sideways, clamping his lips together. Beside him, she giggled, her shoulder brushing his again.
"Come on," she said. "We'll catch more tomorrow."
She uncupped her hands and the firefly flitted upwards, winking gold before it disappeared. Mengyao watched it go until he could no longer see it, and then she was tugging at his hand, attempting to drag him back inside.
"Peizhi," he said irritably. "Stop that. I can walk on my own."
She squeezed his fingers affectionately. "Yes I know, brother, but that's what little sisters are for, aren't they? Keeping you moving?"
He scowled, but it wasn't really a scowl.
